However, the scientific definition of ''state'' also applies to the country of Georgia, and outside of political science, this usage is still commonly found whenever global politics is discussed, like in the news. (U.S. states are called states in the first place because they were originally envisioned as their own countries.) So I prefer we keep it at "U.S. state", and it doesn't even extend the disambiguation term that much.
