Built east of the [[Erechtheion]], the sanctuary was built around 500 BCE. Dedicated to Zeus Polieos ('city protector') for his role as a judge between the goddess [[Athena]] and the god [[Poseidon]], the sanctuary housed in addition to the statue of the god the statues of animals sacred to him, [[eagle]] and [[Cattle|ox]].
