On 1 January 1500, Ruggiero and another mercenary were atop the ramparts inspecting a newly installed cannon. Ezio, having recently returned from Rome, greeted the men asking to try out the cannon. Unfortunately, as Ruggiero explained, the engineer who installed them had run off and was nowhere to be found. After find the engineer, Ezio returned with him. Although the engineer insulted Ruggiero and his men, he still fixed the cannons.<ref name="Ch4"/><ref>''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]'' – [[Target Practice]]</ref>

The following morning, the town was [[Siege of Monteriggioni|besieged]] by [[House of Borgia|Borgia]] forces. Ruggiero witnessed the Borgia forces march on their town. Cannon fire bombarded the walls and battering rams smashed against the fortified doors. As the Borgia forces placed their towers onto the ramparts of the Monteriggioni outer walls, Ruggiero commanded his men to fire at them.<ref name="Ch8">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (novel)|Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]'' – Chapter 8</ref> Ezio later joined them, also taking control of a cannon.<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]'' – [[Vilified]]</ref> Ruggiero was hit with pieces of flying debris and rubble that knocked off his helmet and left him with an ugly head wound. At their defeat by the Borgia, Ruggiero recovered the heavily injured Ezio and laid him on a stretcher bound for the [[Sanctuary]] underneath the villa. The Borgia mercenaries caught up to them however, closing in on Claudia. Two Assassin ''condottieri'' came to her rescue, and Ruggiero soon joined in, killing the Borgia men. Ezio chastised Ruggiero for taking such a risk, as Claudia took over from Ruggiero and got her brother to safety. Ruggiero and his platoon followed Ezio and Claudia through the Sanctuary.
