			To impress his father and prove himself to him, Melanthos sank ships. After sinking a small fleet, he sent a letter to his father, telling him that he understood what his father had meant as his crew had looked up to him with fear. In that same letter, Melanthos announced his intention to follow in his father's footsteps, and with him as the leader of Messara, Messarans would "know true fear."<ref name="Leader's Note from his Son" />
