Her brother-in-law Eddie was sent to put a stop to the mutiny but failed to do so and was dishonorably discharged from the navy for his actions. Marc was subsequently captured and sent to the [[Russia\|Russian]] front, where he ended his life in a gulag. Later that night, Maria was informed of this by Eddie, who believed the people who talked to the children were likely [[United States\|American]] competitors who wanted to mark their territory. Worried for their safety, Maria asked to relocate and move in with her parents in [[Gloucester]]. Eddie initially refused, but eventually agreed after seeing the faces of the children. Maria and her children packed their belongings while Eddie left to inform his friend [[Stan]] about their departure.
