In the fall of 1870, the [[Government of National Defense]] was established after [[Napoleon III]]'s capture and fall as emperor. To contend with the [[Prussia]]ns, it used the [[Champ de Mars]] as a fighting training grounds for the civilians to combat their enemies. However, within a few months, the government abandoned the Parisians as the Prussians surrounded Paris.
