Brissy the Elder studied under the disciples of {{Wiki|Wilfrid}} and, like [[Alcuin]], followed the works of many ''[[skald]]s''.<ref name="Letter">''[[Assassin's Creed: Valhalla]]'' – [[Viking Expansion notes]]: "Letter Concerning the Rigsogur"</ref> Though once part of the monks at [[Whitby Abbey]], he was captured by Rig Reidarasson during a [[raid]] in 820. Rig's men slaughtered many but Rig stopped all violence upon entering the abbey's scriptorium and becoming enamored with the beauty of the room. At the site of a nearby ancient Roman outpost, Rig settled with his warriors and founded the town of Goldness, later [[Goldborough]]. While there, he lived with Rig, and taught him his trade as a luminer.<ref name="Rig"/> Brissy also converted many to [[Christianity]] and followed their journeys.<ref name="Letter"/>

He compiled the saga based on stories he heard around the hearth and the many battles and adventures he witnessed, ending up with a tale he himself described as one of "woe and warning, or of brightness and valor". After Rig's death and the completion of the Rigsogur, Brissy wrote to the scribes, nobles, rulers and the Holy Diocese of [[Leicestershire|Ledecestrescire]] asking them to retell Rig's story, for it "must be written and rewritten and told throughout the scrolls of our land and beyond the shores, for his name is immortal."<ref name="Letter"/>
