==History==
In 1747, during the [[War of the Austrian Succession]], the city was the site of a [[Siege of Bergen op Zoom|siege]] by the [[French Army]] that lasted seventy days. The [[Templars]] [[Haytham Kenway]] and [[Edward Braddock]], the latter of whom served as a lieutenant-colonel in the [[British Army]], took part in the defense of Bergen op Zoom,<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed: Forsaken]]'' – 17 July 1747</ref> but were ultimately defeated. They subsequently evacuated the city, which was sacked by the French.<ref name="ACF">''[[Assassin's Creed: Forsaken]]'' – 7 June 1753</ref>

During the evacuation, a man asked for passage for himself and his family aboard one of Braddock's [[ship]]s but was coldly denied. After the man called him craven, Braddock responded by ordering his executioner [[Slater]] to murder the entire family, much to Haytham's horror.<ref name="ACF"/>
