In 1578, [[Oda Nobunaga]]'s commander [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi]] attacked the Mōri clan in the Chūgoku provinces, which led Oda's ally [[Bessho Nagaharu]] to help the Mōri by shutting himself in Miki Castle and going against Nobunaga. As a result, Hideyoshi started a two-year {{Wiki|Siege of Miki|siege}} of [[Miki Castle]]. This onslaughter caused Negaharu to lose supplies and nourishment for his men. In the end, Nagaharu, his wife, and his younger brother {{Wiki|ja:別所友之|Tomoyuki}} committed ''[[seppuku]]'', in order to save the lives of the castle's [[soldier]]s.<ref name="Database2">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Database: Bessho Nagaharu]]</ref>

In 1582, after Nobunaga's [[Honnō-ji incident|death]] at [[Honnō-ji]],<ref name="Temple of the Horseman">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Temple of the Horseman]]</ref> [[Bessho Harumasa]], a retainer of the Bessho clan, and his forces easily took back Miki Castle from the remnants of the Oda clan and kept Hideyoshi's men at bay. However, this act led to the intervention of [[Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins|Kakushiba ''ikki'']] members [[Fujibayashi Naoe]] and [[Yasuke]].<ref name="A Voice in Anger">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[A Voice in Anger]]</ref> With the help of former commander [[Nakumara Tadashige]], the duo retained the help of ''rōnin'' [[Koshiro]]<ref name="Brothers in Arms">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Brothers in Arms]]</ref> and [[merchant]] [[Hiromichi]]<ref name="Of My Enemy">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Of My Enemy]]</ref> in their plan to attack Harumasa.

==The Assault on Miki Castle==
With their own plans, Naoe entered the castle grounds secretly and started to take down its gunmen and aided Koshiro find his fellow conscripts. Yasuke soon entered the grounds and met personally with Harumasa, surrounded by his men and his second-in-command, [[The Tsuno]]. While insulting him over his ties with Nobunaga, Harumasa accepted Yasuke's challenge to fight over the truth. The Tsuno soon offered to be his master's proxy, to which Harumasa accepted. Leaving the Tsuno to fight against Yasuke, he headed towards the castle's unfinished ''tenshu'' to await The Tsuno after his victory.<ref name="Broken Horn">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Broken Horn]]</ref>

Ultimately, Yasuke managed to best Harumasa's men and the Tsuno, who fell and died in combat against the samurai. Soon, Naoe and Yasuke had Koshiro lead the conscripts back to Tadashige while the duo headed towards the ''tenshu''. There, they managed to confront and defeat Harumasa. On his knees, Naoe [[Interrogation|interrogated]] Harumasa about his plans with [[Ashikaga Yoshiaki|the Tatsu]] and the knowledge about the [[Imperial Regalia of Japan|box]]. However, Harumasa stated that he had no idea and only allied himself with the Tatsu for his support against the Oda clan remnants in Harima and never cared about his leader's ambitions. Arguing over their viewpoints, Harumasa ended the conversation saying freedom was a coward's way. Done with his retorts, Naoe signaled Yasuke to end Harumasa. Once Harumasa thanked him for a quick death, Yasuke drew his [[Ōdachi|ōdachi]] and quickly beheaded Harumasa, ending his plans for Harima.<ref name="Broken Horn"/>

==Aftermath==
After the news of Harumasa's death, [[Genzaburo]], a former commander under Harumasa, learned of Koshiro's hand in his lord's death. He thus ordered his unit to kill Koshiro at [[Kyokaiji Temple]]. Koshiro survived but was wounded greatly. After the attack, Naoe fortunately arrived at the temple and met with Koshiro, who recounted the events. Naoe promised to [[Assassinate|assassinate]] his attackers. After killing all of Genzaburo's unit, she confronted the commander at [[Zuigangi Temple]] and dueled him.
