I propose a handheld game, just as an experiment, rather than a main game. That way, they could slip the game through, just to get a feel for the general response, without getting flamed by people saying the entire franchise is ruined.

Seriously, though, I hate when people say an entire franchise is ruined just because of one unpopular game. Sonic's been through that scenario multiple times, but it's still a good franchise, at least for me.
