Having witnessed the overwhelming odds that the Assassins faced in Rome, as well as the citizens' oppression by those serving the [[House of Borgia|Borgia]], Ezio convinced [[Niccolò Machiavelli]] that they would require loyal soldiers with the strength and courage to face the forces of [[Cesare Borgia]]. Discovering that Micheletto's plan was to infiltrate the play which was to be held at the [[Colosseum]], Ezio followed him, and had his Apprentices eliminate Micheletto's men so they could take the guards' places. Disguised, the recruits and Ezio successfully infiltrated the Colosseum and foiled Micheletto's plan, with the Assassins protecting their leader from the Borgia guards as Ezio carried Pietro to safety.<ref name="Brotherhood" />

The Apprentices were also involved in the assassination of the Templar agents around the city, an event during which several key Borgia supporters were eliminated. In Constantinople, Ezio was able to recruit Apprentices for the [[Ottoman Brotherhood of Assassins|Ottoman Brotherhood]] in a similar manner as he had done in Rome a few years previously. Some recruits were citizens that Ezio helped out by completing certain tasks, while others were saved from harassment inflicted upon them by the Byzantines.<ref name="Revelations" />

Once recruited, Ezio could send these individuals out on [[Mediterranean Defense|contract missions]] in the Mediterranean, where they eroded Templar influence in key cities and eventually retook them for the Assassins. [[Duncan Little]] was an Irishman recruited by Connor in the Northern Boston Area. He left Ireland feeling he was unwanted for being more accepting of people's faiths. He worked with Connor to stop tax men from extorting shopkeepers. [[Clipper Wilkinson]] was found in the Southern Boston district. He was trying to find and stop those responsible for drafting people into the British army by force.<ref name="AC3" />

[[Jacob Zenger]] was found in the east district of [[New York City|New York]]. He and his companions were trying to end the Martial law put in place by luring the Templar responsible out of hiding. Once the Templar was dead, Jacob joined the Assassins. [[Jamie Colley]] was recruited by Connor in the west district of New York. He was trying to prevent a spread of disease across the city, particularly in the areas affected by the Great Fire of 1776. [[Deborah Carter]] was recruited in the north district of New York, where she was trying to help the people against the famine. She joined the Brotherhood after the Templar responsible for hoarding food to charge exorbitant prices was killed.<ref name="AC3" />

With the death of the [[Grand Master of the Templar Order|Grand Master]] of the [[British Rite of the Templar Order|British Templars]] [[Crawford Starrick]] in 1868, the Assassin [[Jacob Frye]] rebuilt the declining [[British Brotherhood of Assassins|British Brotherhood]] by recruiting new initiates from child labor, orphans and prostitutes. Together with the initiates and his twin sister [[Evie Frye|Evie]], Jacob traveled to [[India]] in order to learn the fear tactics of the [[Indian Assassins|Indian Brotherhood]].<ref name="ACS">''[[Assassin's Creed: Syndicate]]''</ref>

By the time of their return to [[London]], the initiate and former asylum occupant [[Jack the Ripper|Jack]] had developed an extremist view of [[the Creed]] and usurped control of Jacob's gang the [[Rooks]], making [[Whitechapel]] the center of his operations. In an attempt to destroy Jack's plans, Jacob sent the other initiates to assume the identity of prostitutes [[Mary Ann Nichols]], [[Annie Chapman]], [[Elizabeth Stride]], and [[Catherine Eddowes]]. However, they were brutally murdered by Jack, earning him the pseudonym "Jack the Ripper" and marking the beginning of London's infamous [[Whitechapel murders]].<ref name="ACS" />

Jack then kidnapped [[Arthur Weaversbrook]]'s son to pressure the journalist into publishing his letters to the public. After Jacob ordered Weaversbrook to cease his operations, Jack chased and kidnapped his former mentor, locking him beneath [[Lambeth Asylum]].<ref name="ACS" />

However, before Jacob's disappearance, Jacob had sent a letter to Evie regarding her return to London. Sure enough, his twin sister disrupted Jack's plans and assassinated his accomplice [[Olwyn Owers]]. Lured from the shadows, Jack massacred the occupants of Owers Manor and framed Evie for the crime.<ref name="ACS" />

After more of his plans were thwarted by the [[Master Assassin]], Jack returned to Lambeth Asylum and killed his former abusive nurse, a doctor and the asylum's director, and destroyed all of his records. He lured Evie to the asylum in order to stage a reunion between her and Jacob. Unfortunately for him, Evie defeated the inmates he had released and ended his life.<ref name="ACS" />

During his own missions, Ezio was able to have up to six Apprentices support him. They would commonly operate alone or in pairs, and were often called upon to perform assassinations, engage in direct combat with an enemy, or perform Arrow Storms if he has three active signals and outright kill every targets in he range. Each time, Ezio would signal the Apprentices to strike by raising his arm and clenching his fist.<ref name="Brotherhood" />

When operating without their [[Mentor]], the Apprentices would move in teams, led by a single Assassin appointed by Ezio. Together, they would complete missions across [[Italy]], as well as the rest of Europe and beyond. One such team was led by Francesco Vecellio and notably featured [[Cipriano Enu]], who specialized in archery, along with the stealthy [[Tessa Varzi]], who was skilled with poisons.<ref name="Project Legacy" />

This team participated in the Defense of [[Camerino]], the rescue of several prisoners that Cesare Borgia was to execute merely for his entertainment, and the protection of the astronomers [[Domenico Maria Novara da Ferrara|Novara]] and [[Nicolaus Copernicus]].<ref name="Project Legacy" />

Likewise, while in Constantinople, Ezio could send his recruits out to cities in the Mediterranean to complete contracts. At first, the cities were controlled by Templars; only by sending Assassins into the city could the Brotherhood erode the Templar influence and eventually reclaim it for the Assassins.<ref name="Revelations" />

Once reclaimed, Ezio could channel some of his income into these cities to improve their infrastructure, which in turn provided him with additional money and supplies. Assassins stationed at reclaimed cities would also receive extra training.<ref name="Revelations" />

Due to the absence of Sultan [[Bayezid II]], the Byzantine Templars' influence in Constantinople grew to a point in which the Byzantines were able to take over several [[Assassin Dens]] located in the city. Following this, they used them as staging grounds, locked down the surrounding area, and prevented Ezio from restoring the city. Eventually however, the Assassin was able to reclaim seven Dens around the city.<ref name="Revelations" />

There was a possibility of the Templars attacking one that was already under the Assassin control. If such an event occurred, Ezio once again relied on his recruits, coordinating the [[Den Defense|defense]] of a contested Den from an adjacent rooftop – though he supported the recruits with his [[Hidden Gun]] when he saw the need to – but nonetheless concentrated on tactics and the placement of the Assassin units. If a recruit has risen to the rank of Assassin, he or she can be assigned to a den, and after reaching the rank of Master Assassin, form "Locked Den" that can never be taken over again.<ref name="Revelations" />

Connor's band of apprentices had numerous skills he would call them for. They could join him as a group of bodyguards or feign his arrest by disguising as soldiers, allowing him to enter [[forts]]. The Apprentices during the [[Third Crusade]] primarily wore generic white robes. Under [[Al Mualim]]'s rule, each rank of Assassins had a unique set of robes, with Al Mualim himself dressing fully in black.<ref name="AC1" />

However, after Altaïr consolidated power in the Brotherhood, the rank-based clothing was discarded, with all Assassins wearing the same set of standard robes, while Altaïr himself continued to wear his Master Assassin robes for the majority of his life.<ref name="AC1" />

The Levantine Assassins were the first Assassin branch to use most of the techniques later adopted by other Assassin branches, including air assassinations, ledge assassinations, and assassinations from hiding spots; all of which were idealized by Altaïr and [[Malik Al-Sayf]].<ref name="AC1" />

Nonetheless, the Levantine Assassins wielded no special equipment, only primarily being equipped with a [[Hidden Blade]], a [[sword]], a [[Short blades|short blade]], and [[throwing knives]], with the amount of weaponry depending on the rank of the Assassin. The Apprentices during the 16th century were trained in a wide variety of skills and weaponry, including all the weapon types used by the previous Assassin generations, as well as [[heavy weapons]], [[long weapons]], [[crossbow]]s, [[Poison darts|poisons]], [[Firearms|guns]], and [[Bombs|explosives]]. The Apprentices' armor and weaponry could be customized however they chose, allowing them to decide whether they would specialize in attack, defense, or both. During the Third Crusade, at the rank of Servant, the Apprentice would receive their Hidden Blade and have their left ring finger amputated as a way of ensuring their commitment to the Order. It also allowed for the blade to function properly.<ref name="Brotherhood" /><ref name="Revelations" />

The practice of amputation was eventually amended by Altaïr once he attained the position of [[Mentor]], as he saw it as a method which the Templars could exploit to identify the Assassins. During the 16th century in Rome, upon completion of their training, an Apprentice was formally inducted into the Assassin Order as a fully fledged Assassin. A ceremony would be held within the Tiber Island headquarters, where, as per tradition, the Apprentice's left ring finger would be branded, and they would perform a [[Leap of Faith]] from the top of the building into the [[Tiber]] river.<ref name="Brotherhood" />

In Constantinople, the recruits progressed in a similar manner, moving through several tiers of training and completing guild contracts. The Constantinople guild did not hold initiation ceremonies like its Roman counterpart. Instead, once an Apprentice reached the rank of Assassin, they could be assigned as a Den Master to one of the seven Assassin Dens in Constantinople, in which they would continue their training as a Master Assassin.<ref name="Revelations" />

Usually during this training period, an Apprentice discovered information concerning a Templar agent operating in the area. The assassination of the agent would mark the completion of their training and promotion to the rank of ''Master Assassin'', and their training and experience allowed them to subsequently defend their Dens from any further attack attempts by the Templars.<ref name="Revelations" />

This reflected the multiculturalism of the [[Ottoman Empire]] and its capital city. No Arab recruits could be found however, given that the Levant was still under Mameluke rule in 1511. The recruits' ethnicity could only be guessed through their names; their clothes were those of random citizens and women from predominantly Christians nations could be seen wearing the ''niqab'' (full Islamic veil) and vice versa.
*Apprentice that was armed with Crossbow lacks any other weapons whatsoever apart from their Hidden Blade. Which make them not ideal for Melee Combat. They will also never reload their crossbow and they will always run into Melee Combat after they kill enemy with their crossbow.
*Apprentice is not able to counter-attack [[Janissary|Janissaries]] even when they reached Master Assassin Rank.

*Connor's apprentices could only be called upon in [[Boston]] and [[New York City|New York]].
* Connor was able to have [[floating conversations]] with his apprentices in taverns in both cities as well as the [[Frontier]].
*If an apprentice was injured during or after battle, Connor could check to see if his fellow comrade was alive and well, during which the apprentice would make a small joke of their current condition.
* Despite the fact that the Apprentices possessed no visible Hidden Blade, they will sometimes perform a stealth assassination with a Hidden Blade kill animation.
*Sword-wielding apprentices can be seen to use some of Haytham's killing animations.
