To his misfortune, Lushan received news of his eldest son's execution at [[Chang'an]] on the same day. Driven into a frenzy by his grief, Lushan took his anger out on Jieran by executing him on the spot before subsequently doing the same to his men.<ref name="Dynasty 17" />
