At the time, it boasted a thriving market that was officially designated by the government to act as the conduit of free trade with the [[Xiongnu]].

In 215 BCE, [[Chu Huan]] and another one of [[Wei Yu's disciple|Wei Yu's disciples]] sneaked into [[Yangzhou Palace]] and stole a [[Treasure chest|chest]] according to intel provided by their informant [[Nie Jing]] that it contained a treasure stolen by corrupt officials from the people.<ref name="Youxia in the Palace">''[[Assassin's Creed: Codename Jade]]'' – [[Youxia in the Palace]]</ref> Nie Jing, secretly an agent for a shadowy faction within the Qin court,<ref name="Battle at the Wall">''[[Assassin's Creed: Codename Jade]]'' – [[Battle at the Wall]]</ref> then reported the theft to the Qin general [[Yang Duanhe]], inciting him to retaliate against their home village [[Jade Spring]] nearby and all but destroying it. Insistent on eradicating them all, Nie Jing tricked [[Yu Ying]] and the disciple who stole the treasure into gathering these survivors together at the rear city gate to plan their next steps. As soon as they met together, they were set upon by Duanhe's troops. Yu Ying's friend arrived too late to save them because they were away investigating General [[Meng Tian]]'s role in their village's attack.
