During his reign, Kanmu moved the capital city of Japan from [[Nara]], home to many scandals to do with the [[Buddhism|Buddhist]] clergy, to the new {{Wiki|Nagaoka-kyō}}. However, due to an uprising and following religious issues, another relocation needed to be undertaken. Kanmu then set out on a trip with his geomancers to find the perfect place for a new capital, eventually settling in what would become [[Kyoto]]. In 794, Kanmu, along with his court and army arrived by palanquin at the {{Wiki|Kyoto Imperial Palace|Imperial Palace}},<ref name="Echoes Shadows 07"/> which would remain as the home to the Emperors of Japan until [[Mutsuhito|Emperor Meiji]] moved to [[Tokyo]] in 1869.<ref>{{WP|Kyoto Imperial Palace}}</ref>
