==History==
Originally established in 657 CE,<ref>{{WP|Whitby Abbey}}</ref> by 820 it was home to [[Brissy the Elder]] and other monks dedicated to creating illuminated manuscripts. In 820, however, it was [[raid]]ed by [[Vikings|Viking]] [[Rig Reidarasson]] and his men, who slaugthered many before Rig himself stopped all violence upon entering the abbey's scriptorium and becoming enamored with the beauty of the room and its golden manuscripts.
