==History==
After France's defeat by [[Nazi Party|Nazi]] [[Germany]] in 1940, the city became the administrative capital of the Vichy regime, which governed the unoccupied southern part of France. While the northern part of the country was under direct German control, Vichy remained nominally independent but collaborated with the Nazis in hopes of securing a quick end to the war.
