Originating as a {{Wiki|Iron Age}} [[Fort|hillfort]] and later a fortified settlement, the town was historically part of [[Hampshire]] during the [[Anglo-Saxon]] period, and later [[Berkshire]] before being transferred to Oxfordshire.
