The '''The Great Garrison''' was a [[fort]] in [[Karkh]]'s suburb of [[Sharqiyah]] in [[Baghdad]] that served as the seat of power of [[Wasif al-Turki]], a Turkic general and a member of the [[Order of the Ancients]] known as '''Al-Mardikhwar'''. It was established by the [[Abbasid Caliphate]] as a means to display the empire's power in spite of recent events that threatened to undermine the caliphate's strength.<ref name="DB">''[[Assassin's Creed: Mirage]]'' – [[Database: The Great Garrison]]</ref> It also served as headquarters of the [[Turkic Army]] in [[Baghdad]] as well as a prison for individuals who spoke or rebelled against the caliphate.

In the 860s, the [[Hidden One]] [[Basim]] and [[Zanj Rebellion|Zanj leader]] [[Ali ibn Muhammad]] tracked Ali's second-in-command [[Beshi]] to the fort, where Beshi a few other rebels were held. After gaining access into the fort, Basim freed the rebels and regrouped with Ali, who managed to find Beshi deeper in the stronghold. Unfortunately for Ali, Beshi was soon executed by Wasif, who then locked himself in his office to prevent the rebels from going in. Basim was able to gain access through the second level and eliminated Wasif before unlocking the room for the rebels. From there, Ali led the rebels into a full-scale rebellion to push out from the fort, with Basim following behind.<ref name="Den of the Beast">''[[Assassin's Creed: Mirage]]'' – [[Den of the Beast]]</ref>
