'''Shōgun''' was the title of the military leaders that were the ''de facto'' rulers of [[Japan]] during most of the period spanning from 1185 until 1868,<ref name="Wiki">{{WP|Shogun}}</ref> with the dissolution of the [[Tokugawa shogunate]] after their defeat against Imperial forces in the [[Boshin War]].<ref name="Fragments">''[[Assassin's Creed: Fragments – The Blade of Aizu]]''</ref> Three main dynasties were ruling shoguns, each with their own center of power: the {{Wiki|Kamakura shogunate}} (1192–1333) in {{Wiki|Kamakura}}, the {{Wiki|Ashikaga shogunate}} (1338–1573) in [[Kyoto]] and the Tokugawa shogunate (1603–1868) in [[Tokyo|Edo]].

In 1336, {{Wiki|Ashikaga Takauji}} was appointed shogun after overthrowing the Kenmu Restoration,<ref>{{WP|Ashikaga shogunate}}</ref> establishing the Ashikaga shogunate and leading to the death of {{Wiki|Emperor Go-Daigo}} in 1339. Takauji and his mentor, [[Musō Soseki]] would found a [[Tenryū-ji|temple]] to celebrate the Emperor's soul the same year.<ref name="Echoes Shadows 07">''[[Echoes of History]] – Shadows'' – Episode 7: Kyoto: Japan's Imperial City</ref>

By 1868, [[Mutsuhito|Emperor Meiji]]'s inner circle of advisors had been infiltrated by the [[Japanese Rite of the Templar Order|Japanese Rite]] of the [[Templars|Templar Order]]. They pushed the Emperor to launch a campaign against the Tokugawa to decisively terminate their rule and restore political prestige and authority to the {{Wiki|Imperial Court in Kyoto|Imperial Court}}. His victory in what became known as the Boshin War accomplished this exact goal and set the stage for the rapid nationalization and industrialization of Japan.<ref name="Fragments"/>
