Sakamoto Castle was built by [[Akechi Mitsuhide]] following the {{Wiki|Siege of Mount Hiei}} in 1571, and later served as the one of his strongholds.<ref name="Against the Koga-ryu">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Against the Koga-ryu]]</ref> When Mitsuhide was away from Omi, his nephew [[Akechi Kagemitsu|Kagemitsu]] was placed in charge of the castle, where he would govern from.<ref name="An Evening in Otsu">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[An Evening in Otsu]]</ref>

Kagemitsu, like his uncle, was a member of the [[Shinbakufu]], making him a target of the [[Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins|Kakushiba ikki]].
