Musō was responsible for the restauration of {{Wiki|Saihō-ji (Kyoto)|Saihō-ji}} and for the construction of [[Tenryū-ji]], Zen Buddhist temples in [[Kyoto]]. He became the first chief priest at Tenryū-ji,<ref>{{WP|Tenryū-ji}}</ref> and established a garden there, arguing that one could attain elightenment not just by meditating but also by creating beautiful art.<ref name="Echoes Shadows 07"/>
