'''Matsuo''' was a spy and agent in the [[Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins|Japanese Brotherhood]] of [[Assassins]] in the [[Boshin War]].

In 1867, he worked with [[French Army]] officer [[Jules Brunet]] to mobilize all Assassin agents in Japan to ensure the victory of the [[Tokugawa shogunate]] and their allies over the {{wiki|Imperial Court in Kyoto|Imperial Court}}. Besides working with the Assassins, Matsuo would infiltrate the personal battalion of [[British Rite of the Templar Order|British Templar]] [[William Lloyd]] by disguising himself as one of his ronin, "Masajiro". Matsuo later encountered [[Nakano Takeko]]'s protégé [[Shiba Atsuko]] during an assault on the enemy camp but luckily for him he was spared as the latter chose to kill the one battling her mentor. He met Atsuko once again after the [[Battle of Aizu]], offering her the opportunity to join the Assassins citing her brother's deeds as well as saving her and the [[Musashi Masamune]].
