Dagmar was engaged to {{Wiki|tsesarevich}} [[Nicholas Alexandrovich, Tsesarevich of Russia|Nicholas]], but he fell ill and passed in 1865, before they could marry,<ref name="Royal"/> with his final wish being that she marry his younger brother.<ref name="Wiki"/> The pair quickly became engaged and married in 1866, with Edward VII and Alexandra attending.<ref name="Royal"/>
