The island is notable for the [[Battle of Mactan|battle]] that took place on its shores on 27 April 1521, between the native [[Visayans]] led by chieftain [[Lapu-Lapu]] and the [[Spain|Spanish]] expedition led by [[Ferdinand Magellan]], who sought a [[Piece of Eden]] in Lapu-Lapu's possession.
