'''Ligeia''' (died c. 422 BCE) was a [[Daughters of Artemis|Daughter of Artemis]] who lived on [[Lesbos]] in the 5th century BCE. In the early years of the [[Pelonessian War]], she became the last victim of the [[Prize of the Medusa]] in the [[Petrified Temple]] on Lesbos. This was an [[Isu]] artifact which transformed [[human]]s into monsters resembling [[Medusa]] from the Greek myths, with serpentine hair and the ability to turn organic beings to stone. Known as [[Writhing Dread]], Ligeia was ultimately slain by the ''[[mercenary|mishios]]'' [[Kassandra]] when searching for her whereabouts on behalf of Ligeia's lover [[Bryce]], after which the mercenary was able to contain the device and bring it to the gates of [[Atlantis]].

At some point, Ligeia met and fell in love with the Lesbian [[Bryce]].<ref name="Romancing the Stone Garden">''Assassin's Creed: Odyssey'' – [[Romancing the Stone Garden]]</ref> They turned one of the dilapidated houses among the [[Dread Ruins|ruins]] in the [[Petrified Valley]] on Lesbos into their hideout, decorating it with flowers and meeting there every night to enjoy each others' company and the poetry of [[Sappho]].<ref name="Love's Long Shadow">''Assassin's Creed: Odyssey'' – [[Love's Long Shadow]]</ref>

However, one night when they were supposed to meet at their hideout, Bryce ran late because she wanted to find a [[rose]] that was "as perfect as [Ligeia] is".<ref name="Love's Long Shadow" /> Apparently tiring of waiting and hearing the sounds of battle, Ligeia left their spot and approached the [[Petrified Temple|strange ruined temple]] among the petrified trees. There she came across [[Mercenary|mercenaries]], among them [[Zetes the Retired|Zetes]], fighting the [[Writhing Dread]]. Leaping into the fray, Ligeia dealt the killing blow to the creature. However, as the creature died, it dropped an [[Prize of the Medusa|artifact]] which Ligeia then picked up. The power of the artifact seized her and transformed her into the next Writhing Dread.<ref name="Heavy is the Spear" />

Some time later, Bryce and the [[Sparta]]n ''[[Mercenary|misthios]]'' [[Kassandra]] sought to discover what had happened to Ligeia and to save her if possible.<ref name="Love's Long Shadow" /> The mercenary acquired two objects, the [[Gorgon Disk|key]] to the Petrified Temple<ref name="Keys to Happiness">''Assassin's Creed: Odyssey'' – [[Keys to Happiness?]]</ref> and Zetes' [[Gorgon Slayer|spear]].<ref name="Heavy is the Spear" /> Kassandra soon entered the temple and battled Ligeia, who had unknowingly turned Bryce to stone moments prior.
