'''Havelok''' (died 870s), also known as '''The Billhook''', was a [[Vikings|Viking]] member of the [[Wardens of Wealth]] sect of the [[Order of the Ancients]] who operated in [[Lincolnshire|Lincolnscire]] in [[England]] in the 9th century. Holding the title of [[Palatinus]], Havelok resided in a villa near the Lincoln Town Hall.

==Biography==
Havelok came to England along with the [[Great Heathen Army]] during the [[Viking expansion|invasion]] of the island in the 860s. While serving, Havelok was recognized by a member of the Order for his quick and ruthless intelligence, and thus introduced him to the {{Wiki|Bishop of Lincoln}} [[Herefrith]], who was a member of the Order in his own right as "The Crozier". Havelok joined the Order and became an apprentice to the bishop, thereby gaining stature and experience. In the 870s, thanks to his connection with the Bishop, Havelok became an established landowner and farmer in [[Lincoln]], where he primarily worked on bribing the shire [[soldier]]s to do his bidding.<ref name="ACV">''[[Assassin's Creed: Valhalla]]'' – [[Breaking the Order]]</ref>

Around the same time, [[Eivor Varinsdottir]] of the [[Raven Clan]] killed Herefrith and looted a [[Order of the Ancients clues|note]] from his body which gave Havelok's cryptonym to her and the details of an arranged meeting at a farm in [[Aelfgarstun]]. Upon searching inside the premise, she found another note revealing Havelok's identity behind his code name and his place of residence at his villa near Lincoln's town hall. Eivor quickly traveled to Havelok's home and [[Assassination|assassinated]] him inside. After his death, she found a note among his personal effects about another member known as "[[Beneseck|The Bell]]" and a chain blockade along Ember River in northeast [[Sussex|Suthsexe]].<ref name="ACV" />

==Behind the scenes==
The first clue that Eivor receives for identifying Havelok can be obtained from assassinating either [[Patrick]], The Anvil at the smithy in [[Oxford|Oxeneforda]], [[Eanbhert]], The Vellum at his ivy-covered house at the docks of [[Gloucester|Glowecestre]], or the [[Zealots|Zealot]] Osgar, who patrols in Lincolnscire.  It may also be found conspicuously-displayed on a lectern in [[Bolingbroc Castle]].

Assassinating Havelok may provide a clue to the identity of Eanbhert, if it has not already been obtained elsewhere.  His death may also provide clues to the identities of [[Beneseck]], The Bell, and [[Heika]], The Sickle.

Havelok shares a trait with [[Gunilla]] in that his death can unlock up to three new trails of Order targets.  He and Eanbhert have a "reversible order" relationship—much like with [[Yohanes Loukas]] and Heika—in that the death of one can open the trail leading to the other.

Havelok's cryptonym of "{{Wiki|Billhook}}" may be a reference to his occupation as a farmer, given its usage as an agriculture tool. His name is possibly a variation of the name Havelock, which is of [[Scandinavia|Scandinavian]] and {{Wiki|Old Norse}} origin meaning "sea competition."

Havelok's apprenticeship under Herefrith is similar to the relationship between two other Order members: [[Audun|The Vault]] and [[Grigorii|The Needle]], the latter having been taken under the former's wing in [[York|Jorvik]].<ref> ''Assassin's Creed: Valhalla'' – [[Pricking the Needle]]</ref>
