==Biography==
Hastein spent many years during the 860s to the 880s raiding [[Francia|Frankish]] territory on the European continent. Then in the early-890s Hastein and his men landed on the shore of [[Kent]], [[England]]. They were quickly met with opposition from ætheling [[Edward the Elder|Edward]] and his brother-in-law, [[Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians|Æthelred]]. In 893, they attempted to take Buttington Fortress, the siege reached a stalemate and only when Hastein's men were starving he decided to try one more last ditch effort against Æthelred's army.
