Around the time of the [[Human-Isu War]], the Isu who decided not to get involved in the conflict started to investigate in possible solutions to save both their civilization and [[Earth]] from the [[Great Catastrophe]]. One of these plans consisted of building four [[towers]] to redirect the solar flares into the [[Grand Temple]] to dispel it.<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed III]]'' – [[21st century conversations|Modern day]]</ref> The first of these towers, [[Maekinn]], was built in Eitri and employed the populace of master craftsmen. In secret, the Isu scientist [[Juno]] made regular visits to the site to see to its specific construction, without the knowledge of the rest of the [[Capitoline Triad]]. Though, the efforts were stopped midway through constructing even one of these towers since it would take too long. 

===The Muspel invasion===
At the dawn of the Great Catastrophe around 75,000 BCE,<ref name="Initiates"/> the [[Muspels]]' warlord [[Surtr]] invaded Svartálfaheimr.<ref name="Ragnarok">''Assassin's Creed: Valhalla – Dawn of Ragnarök''</ref> The Muspels came on huge [[Muspelheim Monolith]]s made to terraform lands to be more hospitable for them and Eitri was promptly made into a barren wasteland, allegedly due to the dragon [[Níðhǫggr]].<ref>''Assassin's Creed: Valhalla – Dawn of Ragnarök'' – [[Database: Muspelheim Monoliths]]</ref> Surtr set up his new headquarters within [[Hreidmar Palace]], from where he could oversee the half-finished tower, and enslaved the dwarves to work in extreme conditions to activate the tower for his own purpose. The dwarves who survived the initial onslaught and had either remained undetected or escaped bondage all fled to hidden [[Dwarven Shelters|shelters]], which they made into hideouts for other survivors.<ref name="Ragnarok"/>
