According to {{Wiki|Japanese mythology}}, Awaji was created through the union of two deities, {{Wiki|Izanagi}} and {{Wiki|Izanami}},<ref name="Database" /> being the first of the ''ōyashima islands'' that make up Japan.<ref name="Wiki" /> By the medieval times, the island came under the domain of several noble families, eventually the {{Wiki|Sasaki clan}} in the 13th century. The Sasaki, who were ''{{Wiki|gokenin}}'' of the {{Wiki|Kamakura shogunate}}, served as the ''{{Wiki|shugo}}'' (military governor) of the province.<ref name="Database" />

By the time of the [[Ashikaga shogunate|Muromachi shogunate]] in the 14th and 15th centuries, Awaji came under the control of the power {{Wiki|Hosokawa clan}}, but later loss their position to the {{Wiki|Miyoshi clan}}. Under the latter, in order to protect the island, the [[Sumoto Castle]] was constructed in 1526 by the Miyoshi clan's retainer, the {{Wiki|ja:安宅氏|Ataga}}, who captained bands of sea warriors who were more or less [[Piracy|pirates]]. The Miyoshi clan was defeated by [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi]] in 1581, who then entrusted the island's rule to his vassals. Around this time, [[Kimura Yukari]], the daughter of [[Templar]] [[Kimura Kei]], came to Awaji and succeeded in seducing the island's ''[[daimyo]]'', becoming his concubine. After the departure of the ''daimyo'' and his men, Yukari became de-facto ruler of the island, with [[Imagawa Tomeji]] as her right-hand man.<ref name="ACSH">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]] – [[Claws of Awaji]]''</ref> In the same, the [[Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins|Kakushiba-''ikki'']] member [[Fujibayashi Tsuyu]] traveled to Awaji to locate and recover the ''{{Wiki|Kusanagi no Tsurugi}}'', one of the [[Imperial Regalia of Japan|Imperial Regalia]].
