Born in {{Wiki|Bizen Province}}, [[Ukita Naoie]] was the son of {{Wiki|:ja:宇喜多興家|Ukita Okiie}}, a local [[Daimyō|feudal lord]]. The adventures that surround his life during his youth are known to us only through {{Wiki|Gunki monogatari|warrior tales}} ([[wikt:軍旗|gunki]] [[wikt:物#Japanese|mono]]) from the late 17th century and are therefore to be taken with caution. Following the [[assassination]] of his grandfather {{Wiki|:ja:宇喜多能家|Yoshiie}} in 1534, Naoie and his father were displaced from their lands and were taken in by the {{Wiki|:ja:浦上氏|Urakami}}, the lords of {{Wiki|Tenjinyama Castle (Bizen)|Tenjinzan Castle}}. After the death of his father in 1536, Ukita Naoie became head of the {{Wiki|Ukita clan}} and served as vassal to {{Wiki|Uragami Munekage|Munekage}}. In 1568 and 1569, he waged war against neighboring lords and, victorious, extended his influence.

In 1569, Ukita Naoie joined forces with [[Oda Nobunaga]] and {{Wiki|:ja:赤松政秀|Akamatsu Masahide}} to rebel against his lord Urakami Munekage. However, Munekage reversed the situation when Akamatsu was {{Wiki|ja:青山・土器山の戦い|defeated}} by {{Wiki|Kuroda Mototaka}} and his [[Kuroda Yoshitaka|son]]. Rather than continue to fight alone, Naoie chose to return to the Urakami clan. But Naoie's rebellious streak had not yet ended. He sent spies to disband Munekage's vassals in {{Wiki|Mimasaka Province|Mimasaka}} and Bizen provinces.

Then, in 1573, Naoie attacked {{Wiki|Okayama Castle}}, seizing transport routes and farmland in the area. He renovated the castle and the old route of the {{Wiki|San'yō region|San'yō Road}}, establishing {{Wiki|Okayama}} as the political and economic capital of Bizen. Naoie finally {{Wiki|:ja:天神山城の戦い|defeated}} the Urakami in 1577, forcing them to flee to {{Wiki|Shikoku}}. At the time, Naoie controlled Bizen, Mimasaka, and part of [[Harima]] province, becoming one of the most powerful lords in the region. When [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi|Hideyoshi]] launched his campaign to conquer the {{Wiki|Chūgoku region}}s, Naoie first allied himself with the {{Wiki|Mōri clan|Mōri}} before reversing and entering Hideyoshi's service. Esteemed as one of [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi|Hideyoshi]]'s most adept strategists and negotiators, Yoshitaka's contributions were pivotal in numerous military campaigns.

During the {{Wiki|Chūgoku region|Chūgoku}} campaign against the {{Wiki|Mōri clan|Mōri}}, Yoshitaka welcomed Hideyoshi to Himeji Castle and subsequently entered his service. In 1578, when {{Wiki|Araki Murashige}} {{Wiki|Siege of Itami (1579)|rebelled}} against [[Oda Nobunaga|Nobunaga]], Yoshitaka endeavored, albeit unsuccessfully, to dissuade him, resulting in his {{Wiki|Itami Castle|house arrest}} until the following year. In 1580, he ceded Himeji Castle to Hideyoshi, who reciprocated by granting him land in [[Harima]] with an income of 10,000 {{Wiki|koku}} of rice. Yoshitaka then participated in several of Hideyoshi's military expeditions, {{Wiki|Battle of Shizugatake|initially}} in western {{Wiki|Honshu}}, {{Wiki|Kyūshū campaign|then}} in [[Kyushu]], and [[Imjin War|later]] in [[Korea]], securing multiple victories.

Yoshitaka played a crucial role in the [[Battle of Sekigahara]] in 1600 and continued to engage in combat in Kyushu. He was originally from [[Sakai]] and was the {{Wiki|:ja:田中与兵衛|son}} of a wealthy [[merchant]] who held a position in the {{Wiki|:ja:会合衆|city council}}. Rikyū was also influenced by {{Wiki|Zen}} meditation and developed the {{Wiki|Wabi-sabi|wabi}} aesthetic under the guidance of Takeno Joo, his mentor. On the recommendation of [[Imai Sōkyū]], he joined the circle of [[Oda Nobunaga]], then of [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi]], who preferred him over Sōkyū. Moreover, Hideyoshi specifically assigned Rikyū to be in charge of the grand {{Wiki|Japanese tea ceremony|tea ceremony}}, during which he personally served the [[Michihito|emperor]]. Hideyoshi and Rikyū were very close, but neither of them had an easy character to the point that they ended up arguing, and Hideyoshi sentenced him to death by ordering him to [[Seppuku|cut open]] his abdomen. There is no information on why Hideyoshi acted in such a cruel manner, however, historians have made numerous assumptions, none of them prevailing over the others. Though, it is evident that Rikyū made a serious mistake to provoke the anger of his lord in such a way.

Masayasu, awed by Hanzō's reputation and skills, pleaded to be trained as a ''shinobi'', but Hanzō harshly refused, dismissing him as an unfit farmer and suggesting he would be better off serving a local ''[[daimyō]]''. However, Sandayu, not caring about Masayasu's status, was willing to give the young farmer a chance to prove himself and suggested a sparring contest between Masayasu and Hanzō.<ref name="InM Ch1"/>

During their fight, Hanzō quickly gained the upper hand and managed to throw Masayasu down a small cliff. He then began to boast about his skills while insulting Masayasu, only to be interrupted by a young girl, [[Chiyo]], who insisted that Masayasu was a hero who had protected their village from harm.<ref name="InM Ch1"/>

An annoyed Hanzō grabbed Chiyo and threatened her by saying that, if they were on the battlefield, he would not hesitate to kill her, as it was not uncommon for innocents to perish during wartime. In September 1581, Hanzō returned to Iga to warn Fujibayashi Nagatao, Momochi Sandayu, and the other members of the [[Iga ikki|Iga ''ikki'']] that Oda Nobunaga's forces were planning an [[Tenshō Iga War|invasion]] of the region. He promised them Ieyasu's protection if they swore loyalty to his lord, but they refused. After Nobunaga's death, his vassal [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi]] became his master's successor. Hideyoshi later defeated Ieyasu, who then pledged loyalty to the Toyotomi. Tsuyu summoned all Assassins in Japan to help protect the artifacts, and Sandayu joined them as they fought a mysterious group called the [[Shinbakufu]] at the ''[[Old Kofun|kofun]]'' where the regalia were stored. On 6 October 1579, Sandayu led the successful [[Tenshō Iga War|defense]] of Iga from the invading army of [[Oda Nobunaga]], commanded by his son [[Oda Nobukatsu]]. During the battle, he allowed [[Fujibayashi Naoe]], Nagato and Tsuyu's daughter, to help the other ''shinobi'', despite her father having forbidden her from taking part in the conflict out of fear for her safety. Sandayu and other ''shinobi'' traveled to the [[Aekuni Shrine Town]], where they battled some of the invading [[Oda clan]] soldiers and eventually managed to defeat them with help from Nagato and Naoe. Nagato then handed Sandayu a letter he had received from Hanzō, which revealed that the Shinbakufu were after the Jewel hidden in the Mihata Kofun. Deducing Tsuyu had given him the artifact for safekeeping, Sandayu was furious that Nagato had concealed this information from him and claimed that their oath to protect the Imperial Regalia had died with Tsuyu.<ref name="Fight of the Kakushiba Ikki"/>

==History==
Born out of the fragmentation of central power in the wake of the [[Ōnin War]], the community in Iga decided to create their own code for living in the unstable period that followed. As a way to limit internal conflict, two documents were produced in 1494 that formed rules for life within Iga. The first document was an agreement to abide by specific rules that limited conflict over territory and a general code of conduct that was signed by 350 commoners. The second document was signed by 46 people representing Iga's families of note, who vowed not to fight over taxes or the collection thereof and to work together to prevent insubordination of the peasants underneath them, as well as to defend the territory. These two groups formed a united front to maintain local order and peace from both internal and external sources, such as [[bandit]]s and neighboring ''daimyō''.<ref name="Echoes Shadows 06"/>

In 1578, [[Oda Nobukatsu]] decided to invade Iga, taking the Iga ''ikki''{{'}}s expulsion of their military governor as an excuse. He dispatched [[Takigawa Kazumasu]] to build a castle for them to use as a staging point for the invasion, though Takigawa and his forces were forced to retreat by November of that year. In October 1579, he tried another invasion, but the ''ikki''{{'}}s guerrilla tactics inflicted heavy losses against his army, who had to retreat again. On 30 September 1581, furious over Nobukatsu's ineptitude, his father Nobunaga invaded Iga with a large army that outnumbered the defendants about 4 to 1. The superior numbers allowed him to attack from six different directions, impeding the ''ikki'' from concentrating their forces to prevent any single incursion. Overrun, they retreated to two castles, one in the north and one in the south, but had to surrender on 8 October, marking their defeat.<ref name="Echoes Shadows 06"/>
