Richard I of England, or Richard the Lionheart was the king of England in 1191. At the beginning of Assassin's Creed, Richard and his army have just taken the port city of Acre. His ultimate goal is to lead his army into the city of Jerusalem so that he can free the holy land in the name of the Christian faith.

With a base of operations established in Acre, the Crusaders prepare to march south. However, Saladin, leader of the Islamic army, currently rules the city of Jerusalem. Stinging from his army’s defeat at Acre, he will not allow Richard to humiliate him again. The Muslim forces are massing in the ruins of Arsuf, intending to ambush the Crusaders and prevent them from reaching Jerusalem. These war maneuvers have left the rest of the Holy Land wide open. While Richard and Saladin battle one another, the men left to govern in their stead have begun taking advantage of their new found positions of power. Exploitation, manipulation, and provocation rule the day.

Richard the Lionheart makes a brief appearance during two missions in the game. He is leader of the invading forces allied against Saladin, and has decided to attempt to take back Jerusalem for Christianity.

Assassin's Creed
King Richard appears in the first of the Assassin's Creed series. In the virtual world he's the leader of the Crusader Army who's fighting Saladin in the Holy Land. Several of his luitenants are Robert de Sable, Grand Master of the Templars , Garnier de Naplouse, Grand Master of the Hospitaliers, William of Montferrat, Regent lord of Acre and Sibrand, Grand Master of the Knights Teutonic. He was unaware of the Templars' plan to betray him by using the Piece of Eden and conquering the Holy Land in the Templar name. After Altaïr had assassinated everyone but Robert, Robert convinced Richard to ally himself with Saladin against the Assassins, their common enemies. Altair learned of Robert's plans and personally rode to Arsuf to tell Richard of the Templars' betrayal. After a fierce battle with the newly allied Crusader and Saracen soldiers, he found King Richard, Robert and other elite soldiers of the army. Then Altair told the king of Robert's treason and Robert denying it ("my liege this is an Assassin, these creatures are masters of manipulation of course it isn't true" -Robert de Sable), Richard didn't know who to trust after Altair asked Richard if he was truly surprised by his subjects' plan of betrayal. He wasn't truly surprised by the news but he still didn't trust Altair so he let the Lord decide who was the one who told the truth and let Altair and Robert decide this by close combat. Altairs efficiency with the Hidden Blade proved superior to the Templars sword skills, and King Richard belived him after. They discussed with each other about the politics and philosophy of war and peace, in which Richard told Altair he wasn't ready for peace with the Saladin yet ("but in time what you seek may be possible" -King Richard), before Altair went back to Masyaf to combat Al Mualim.

The Assassins, also known as the Hashashin, are an organized Order of Assassins, who are in a constant low-scale war with their greatest advesaries the Knights Templar. The order has existed over at least a century, including the Third Crusade, the Renaissance, and even lasting into the year 2012. The order believes in a firm creed of values that strictly govern their way of life, consisting of three tenets: stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent, hide in plain sight, and to never compromise the brotherhood. The tenets are lived by daily in the fight for "peace in all things". The Assassins carry out their duties through political strategic assassination, by doing so, potential threats of peace will be forever suppressed. Assassins through their work could be easily looked at as political keepers of peace. Fighting on behalf of the people who do not possess the abilities or better put, resources to speak out against the men in power who harm them. Assassins speak to these men of corruption for them, by introducing them to the sharp edge of a Hidden Blade. By doing so the people are freed from the shackles of their oppression. Even though the Assassins fight for the people they are feared, because no matter how you look at it killing is killing. The only way to truly justify it is self-defense, if in fact that's what it truly was. The Assassins were most feared due to the terrifying reputation for taking life in public. Creating the atmosphere of it not being safe to commit ill acts under the sun spreads fear amongst their enemies. Never knowing when they may fall to an enemy who they can't see or hear. Assassins possessed a specific weapon most efficient for assassinations, it was the Hidden Blade. A single thrust from this weapon could change the course of the Holy Lands future, as well as history. Such power could easily go to a blade hands mind causing him to lift himself above others knowing he could change history. But the devotion to their cause (peace in all things) and the knowledge of the "Assassins Creed" provided the guidance necessary to detour them from such thoughts, but this was not always the case. In order to have a precise impact caused by an assasssination the Assassins possessed extensive political knowlege, always intune with the ever changing politics surrounding the empires of the Holy Land. They used this to decide who's death would most benefit the land. Obtaining information was done by stationing agents within the cities to keep an eye on their actions. When deployed on missions elite master assassins or blade hands were the ones responsible for carrying out public assassinations, they worked alone in the field usually disguised most often as holy scholars or other suitable images. When stationed in a city the Assassins would spend an immense amount of time there getting acquainted with their environment and learning where and when it be best to strike at their marked target. The actual strike itself took place in public, by performing the murder in the public's eye, the Assassins knew with out a doubt news and information about the assassination would spread quickly amongst the people and those possibly tied to the one assassinated. Effectively spreading fear and disrupting the chain of command targeted by the Assassins. "When does our work ever go as expected? It's our ability to adapt that makes us who we are." -Al Mualim
Assassin's Creed
In 1191, during the Third Crusade, the Assassins Order has its stronghold in the fortress of Masyaf. Led by Al Mualim, the other assassins battle with the Templar's and their leader, Robert de Sable over ideologies and the means in which to accomplish them. It is the Third Crusade and low-scale war with the Templar's that Altair must find wisdom within himself from the "Assassins Creed" in order to accomplish the assassinations appointed for his redemption. As the war intensifies and Altair begins to understand the Assassins true way of life, the "Creed" and it's meaning begin to open Altair's eyes and mind to question their cause and the lives he is meant to take in the name of the Assassins peace. Is killing these men the true and only way to teach those that have strayed or do they not deserve a second chance, "misguided perhaps but pure in motive". Altair

Assassin's Creed 2
It has been announced in the May 2009 issue of Game Informer that the Assassins have "gone underground", but the order still continues their battle with the Templar's. Ezio, who was announced as the game's protagonist, is an Italian nobleman who joins the order for an unknown reason.

Real History
Hashshashin

The Hashshashin (also Hashishin, Hashashiyyin, or Hashasheen) from which the word assassin is thought to originate, was the Persian derived designation of the Nizari branch of the Ismā'īlī Shia Muslims during the Middle Ages.

In one of his conversations with Malik at the Assassin's Bureau in Jerusalem, Altair addresses Malik as "dai" (during the Majd Addin assignment.) The dais are the direct representatives of the Imam, who is the exalted spiritual leader of the people. This means that Malik was made a dai after he pulled off the task that Altair failed to accomplish in the beginning. In the beginning of the story in the cut-out scene under the Temple, Altair states that he is of a higher rank than Malik. Altair is a Master Assassin Instructor, which means that Malik is not yet a dai. While devising a plan on how to approach Al Mualim, Malik refers to Altair as dai (Al Mualim assassination) showing that he obtained the rank upon taking Roberts life.

The Bureau leaders in Acre and Damascus are rafiqs. That is not their name but their rank. A rafiq is a first level instructor just beneath a dai. Initially they are teachers and field contacts that provided Altair with where and when to best strike. But after Altairs major failure, Al Mualim places him under the entire Asassins Order. This results in rafiqs obtaining authoritive power over Altair. Rafiqs are then authorized to grant or deny the carrying out of a assassination strike, if Altair does not posess what they feel is enough information on the target. Once Altair has properly learned where and when the target will be, he is granted permission to perform the strike. But only after receiving the assassination feather marker. Rafiqs are also responsible for documenting information about the assassinations success, but also the information that the informers stationed around the cities have obtained. The informers seem to be under the authority of the rafiqs and answer to them. This is noted in how rafiqs seem to always have knowledge of the targets occupation and the area most occupied by them. But because rafiqs can't leave the bureau, informers gather information in the field and report back. With this information rafiqs direct Altair in the directions of where best to begin his search.

Each of them has a particular skill or talent which he may teach in addition to teaching philosophy, the Quran, and the Creed. Malik is a cartographer, or map maker. One of the rafiqs is a potter (Damascus) and the other is a scholar/scribe (Acre). Their given names are never said. They are only called rafiq as a title of respect.

The higher level teachers (Instructors) at Masyaf (Al Mualim's Library) are those who wear the white robes with a black djellaba and red decorative markings. They more than likely are the teachers who provide in depth education on philosophy and the politics of the world. Providing such knowledge educates and molds out to the assassin students how and why it is that a single assassination strike could change the land and affect history. Instructors probably help assassins better understand why our work is so important in maintaining peace. Al Mualim also wears this attire except his is all black. Distincting him as Master of the Asassins Order.
