Assassin's Creed II is a sandbox style action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It was released on November 17, 2009 (US), November 19, 2009 (AU) and November 20, 2009 (Worldwide) on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PC version has been confirmed to be released on March 16 in North America. A special version of the game will also be released on the Nintendo DS.

A direct sequel to Assassin's Creed, the game is focused again on Desmond Miles after he escapes Abstergo Industries with employee Lucy Stillman. In an attempt to thwart Abstergo and the modern-day Templars, Desmond uses a device almost identical to the Animus to relive the genetic memories of his ancestor, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who lived in Italy during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The player controls Desmond, to a degree, but primarily Ezio, who becomes an Assassin after his family is betrayed. While controlling Ezio, the player can explore renditions of major Italian regions and cities through a mixture of action, stealth, and economic gameplay.

Gameplay
Assassin's Creed II is similar to its predecessor in many ways. The game is nonlinear and can be considered "sandbox style" due to the player's ability to freely roam the generated renditions of Italy. The Animus is replaced with the Animus 2.0 which, unlike the first, possesses an in-game database with historical information about encountered landmarks, characters, services, and glyphs.

The player is now also capable of swimming and Eagle Vision has been updated to allow for third-person view and use while the character is moving. A young version of Leonardo da Vinci is included in the game and translates Codex pages left behind by Altaïr, allowing for weapon upgrades. Other weapons, such as swords, daggers, and maces, can also be purchased throughout the game as well. Leonardo further contributes to game play with the inclusion of his flying machine in one of the game's missions. The player is also able to use gondolas and ride horses that are found.

Monteriggioni, the Auditore family's villa, acts as Ezio's primary headquarters throughout the game and a new economic system allows for the property to be upgraded and enhanced, creating income for the player at twenty minute intervals. As shops within Monteriggioni are renovated and upgraded, Ezio receives discounts on the particular goods that are sold. As more property is enhanced, the amount of income is increased with income also being affected by the purchase of paintings, armor and weapon sets and collections of various items. Such items are displayed throughout the villa as they are collected and Ezio's personal room is updated with portraits of his assassinations as the game progresses.

The combat system for the game has been updated and allows for further options, such as disarming opponents. There also more methods of hiding (the player is able to dive underwater to break line of sight with an enemy) and blending may be performed with any small group of individuals rather than with specific people. Ezio is capable of learning new modes of assassination, such as ambushing individuals when hiding in haystacks or pulling individuals off buildings to fall to their deaths. There are also several types of enemies, some more agile or stronger than others. Ezio can also use smoke bombs and hire groups of thieves, courtesans, or mercenaries to aid him in covering his tracks and avoiding contact with guards. Health in the game is measured via synchronization and minor wounds will heal automatically. Major wounds must be healed by side-street doctors or with medicine purchased from the same.

The game introduces a new system known as notoriety. Depending on his behavior, current location, and current mission, Ezio will become more recognizable by citizens of the city, specifically guards. When the notoriety icon is empty, Ezio is known as "incognito" and may travel through the city as he pleases. As the player behaves in more "socially unacceptable" ways or due to the consequences of a particular mission, the player will become more noticeable by the guards and more likely to be pursued by them. Notoriety can be decreased by bribing city heralds, assassinating corrupt city officials, and removing wanted posters. The level of notoriety is set within each city, so that while the player may be completely unknown in some cities, he may be infamous in others.

Like its predecessor, the game features the same ability to climb buildings and perform Leaps of Faith into haystacks and carts of soft materials. Climbing has been updated to allow Ezio the opportunity to learn to leap while climbing, allowing him to reach higher positions previously unavailable.

A day and night cycle has been added to the game and the player will notice the sun rising and setting throughout game play. In addition, specific missions and game events at certain times of the day and night.

Due to complaints of the some of the missions in the original game, the mission system has been expanded and structured a little differently. There is approximately 200 missions in the entire game with roughly half of them being relevant to the primary storyline. Side quests include the location and search of hidden areas which upon exploration and successful completion will reward the player with seals of past Assassins. A full collection of six seals rewards the player with the armor of Altaïr.

The game also possesses a system mildly similar to the "glitches" from Assassin's Creed, where pressing a specific button during a cutscene will produce specific changes and actions within the scene.

Plot
Spoiler
The game begins approximately 1-2 hours after the events of Assassin's Creed, where, in the year 2012, Desmond Miles is being held prisoner by the modern-day Knights Templar in Abstergo Industries, after being forced to relive the genetic memories of his ancestor, Altaïr, to aid Abstergo in the location of artifacts known collectively as "Pieces of Eden".

Due to the "bleeding effect", Desmond has gained Eagle Vision, enabling him to see a variety of messages and symbols written in blood on his bedroom wall by its former occupant, known only as "Subject 16". While staring at the message, former employee and researcher of Abstergo, Lucy Stillman arrives, covered in blood, and frees Desmond from the room. He reenters the Animus briefly as she makes a copy of the files located within the machine. The two escape after a brief scuffle with the guards and arrive at a factory where Lucy and two other modern Assassins, Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane have set up their own base of operations, complete with their own version of an Animus.

Desmond is asked to enter their version of the Animus and relive the genetic memory of his ancestor Ezio Auditore da Firenze in order to continue the search for the remaining Pieces of Eden before Abstergo locates them. The number in the Assassins Order seriously dwindling, Lucy informs Desmond that she intends to train Desmond in the various skills needed to become an Assassin by exploiting the bleeding effect and having Desmond absorb Ezio's abilities.

Ezio, living in Italy during the Renaissance, approximately 300 years after Altaïr's time, is approximately 17-years-old when he discovers that his family was betrayed by a close friend of his father's in the midst of a political plot. Ezio is ultimately unable to save his brothers and father from said betrayal and all three are convicted of treason and hung.

Ezio's father's final instructions lead him to a hidden room in the family home with a chest containing the clothing and weapons of an Assassin. Ezio brings his panicked sister and now mute mother to the family's countryside villa where they are given shelter by Ezio's uncle Mario, who begins training Ezio to become an Assassin. Mario also provides information and leads on the conspirators involved in his family's betrayal, which becomes a trail stretching from Florence to San Gimignano, Forlì, Venice, and eventually the Vatican.

During his travels, Ezio befriends several citizens of Italy who aid him in his pursuit for revenge, including a young Leonardo da Vinci, who translates and decodes pages of Altaïr's Codex, enabling Ezio to gain new weapons and assassination skills. Ezio begins slowly locating and assassinating the conspirators involved and is ultimately able to identify Rodrigo Borgia as the overall leader, whose main goal is to bring down the Medici family and take control of various portions of Italy.

Ezio tracks Borgia to Venice and discovers Borgia has obtained the Piece of Eden known only as the "Apple", a piece that Altaïr possessed almost three centuries prior. Borgia has been researching the knowledge surrounding the Pieces of Eden extensively and believes himself to be a prophet named in the documentation of the pieces, which would ultimately lead him and other Templars to a location known only as "The Vault", which is believed to contain powerful information and more Pieces of Eden.

Ezio and Borgia duel and when Ezio gains the upper hand, guards appear and begin to move the fight into the favor of Borgia. The allies that Ezio has made over the years arrive shortly after and they defeat Borgia, who flees for fear of his life, leaving the Apple behind. The allies and friends of Ezio finally reveal their common trait &mdash; that they are all members of the Assassins Order, including the great Niccolò Machiavelli. They induct Ezio into the Order, informing him that they believe him to be the actual prophet who will lead not the Templars but the Assassins to the Vault.

Desmond takes short breaks from the Animus and during one is tested by Lucy to see if the bleeding effect has been working. Desmond is able to demonstrate all of Ezio's skills, indicating that he has absorbed years worth of abilities in only a matter of hours. During this break, however, Desmond suffers a strange hallucination which returns him to the body of Altaïr in Acre. During the memory, Altaïr makes love to Maria, a Templar, and Desmond is confused to find that after Altaïr leaves, the memory stays behind with Maria.

Throughout the genetic memories, as Ezio, Desmond discovers multiple glyphs placed on various landmarks that are only visible to someone using the Animus. The glyphs are found to be the same ones drawn on Desmond's bedroom wall in Abstergo, and analysis reveals that they contain computer code, hidden in the Animus. It is ultimately discovered that Subject 16 hacked the Animus and placed the glyphs within the memories himself, which were carried over to the new Animus when Lucy loaded the information she had recovered at Abstergo. Each glyph contained a great number of historical artworks, photographs, and messages, past and present, implicating a great number of prominent events and figures with the Templars, and Pieces of Eden. Each also contained a puzzle of some sort which when solved contained clips of a larger video. The clips, however, are short and out of sequence. After locating and solving all twenty glyphs, a video is revealed.

The video begins with the Abstergo logo shown above the title, "Subject 16, Session 12, Classified Date B.C.E." The video follows a man and woman, who call each other by the names of "Adam" and "Eve", running through a strangely modern and futuristic world, apparently being chased by someone or something. They pass through a complex where workers are busy building more Pieces of Eden and climb to the roof. Eve holds up the Apple and the video suddenly ends with a flash of binary code that translates to "EDEN".

Desmond returns to the Animus and the team finds that many of the following memories are corrupted. They are able to begin again but only years after the fight between the Assassins and Borgia. The memories restart in 1499 and the team discovers that Borgia gained influence and power in the Catholic Church, ultimately becoming Pope Alexander VI. Ezio and his allies have searched long and hard and collected all thirty pages of the Codex and discover through it that the Vault lies in Rome, specifically under the Vatican. They realize that the Papal Staff is another Piece of Eden and Borgia is hoping to use it to achieve access to the Vault.

Ezio travels to the Vatican City and attempts to assassinate Borgia. However, Borgia uses the Staff against Ezio who retaliates with the Apple. During the ensuing battle, Ezio is stabbed and Borgia escapes with both Pieces of Eden. Ezio chases after him and finds Borgia trying to open the Vault in vain. The two fight once more and Borgia finally falls. However, Ezio refuses to kill him, insisting he has killed enough in his life and the continued deaths will not reverse the deaths of his family.

Ezio proves himself to be the Prophet when in his hands, the Apple and Staff open the Vault and Ezio steps inside. Inside the Vault, he finds not Pieces of Eden but an empty room and a holographic figure claiming to be Minerva. She claims that she brought Ezio to her so that almost six hundred years later, Desmond and his allies would hear her words through the Animus.

Minerva explains that she and her race were part of an advanced society that settled on Earth before a celestial event that destroyed most of the life on Earth. The remaining members of her species rebuilt the world as best they could and created humans in their own image. The two races lived side by side for a time before eventually coming to war. The humans seemingly won and those remaining of the advanced race sealed themselves in temples around the world, hoping to prevent the same disaster that had destroyed most of their kind from occurring once more. As Minerva finishes, she speaks to Desmond by name and informs him that she has done all she needs to and the rest remains up him and his allies.

The memory ends and Desmond awakes in the present to find that Abstergo has located and begun attacking the Assassins as Shaun and Rebecca pull him out of the Animus. Desmond is given a hidden blade by Lucy and the two run downstairs to stop the guards as Shaun and Rebecca pack up their equipment. With the skills he absorbed from Ezio, Desmond is able to dispatch the forces that have been sent against them and he discovers Warren Vidic standing in the back of a truck. He sarcastically tells Desmond to enjoy his temporary victory and the truck drives away. Shaun and Rebecca finish gathering the equipment and Lucy assures Desmond that Vidic will get what he deserves.

The group vacates the hideout and head north to a cabin where, according to Lucy, they should be safe for some time. As they drive, Lucy prepares to review the tapes of Desmond's latest session, noting how the situation has escalated dramatically and how Minerva's words proved everything she was afraid of. She theorizes that Minerva was discussing the Earth's geomagnetic reversal, which could have detrimental effects on the planet. Rebecca prepares the Animus for Desmond to reenter as Lucy speculates there may be more to discover in his memories.

Spoiler End

Development
On January 22 2008, it was confirmed by Ubisoft that Assassin's Creed II was in production, but no details were revealed. A promotional video was released by Ubisoft on April 6 showing a map of Italy, some hidden blade designs, and DaVinci's flying machine on a scroll. On the official site after the teaser is viewed a symbol is given to print and show in front of a webcam. Doing this will unlock a picture displayed on the site. 4 of the 5 symbols have been given by Ubisoft, and the other was found by a fan. Later, on April 10, Game Informer magazine released details on the game, as well as pictures of Ezio. There are about 240 team members, some of these members were sent to Italy, traveling through Venice, Florence, Tuscany, and Rome. ScrewAttack also released a video with some of the pictures from the magazine. In early May, Ubisoft has stated that they are putting full emphasis on the game and that 450 team members are now working on the title. 75% of the original developers for the original game are now working on the second.
Several days before the release of Assassin's Creed II, EBGames Australia offered an unlock code for Palazzo Medici when you preordered the normal edition.

The two bonus maps are not so much maps as bonus missions which are contained within their own maps. The Palazzo Medici map has Ezio rescuing Lorenzo De Medici from Templar soldiers who have invaded his home, for which Ezio receives a substantial monetary reward. The Santa Maria Dei Frari map is very similar to the Assassin's tomb maps which are found elsewhere in the game, although there is no Assassin's seal to retrieve at the end; there is only a monetary reward.
Even before the release of Assassin's Creed II, discussion of the details about a possible Assassin's Creed III were already ongoing.

Scriptwriter Corey Mays has recently stated that the developers wish to keep the settings of the games those that are normally unvisited in most video games. Some postulated settings include the Middle Ages (specifically the time frame of King Arthur) or feudal Japan.
On January 13, 2010, Ubisoft revealed a new title tentatively titled Assassin's Creed II Episodes to be supposedly released between April 2010 and March 2011. The game is not an actual sequel or expansive pack to the original Assassin's Creed II, but will once again feature the genetic memories of Ezio Auditore da Firenze and will contain a new online multiplayer mode.
Trivia
*It is suspected that the part of Assassin's Creed in the present takes place in Italy, considering that the outside of the hideout looks almost exactly like Florence in Ezio's time, and that the underground parking lot in Abstergo and the Assassin's hideout have signs that have words in Italian, including "sezione", which means "section" in English. In Abstergo's garage there are signs in Italian saying "Parcheggio riservato" meaning "Reserved parking" and "Altezza totale" meaning "Altitude". In the end of Assassins Creed II Lucy says that they can hide out in a cabin north and Rebecca later says that it's a long drive meaning that the cabin is possibly in Austria or Germany or Switzerland.
*The game takes place only two days after the end of the previous game on September 8th 2012. Desmond goes to sleep only once meaning that the Assassins leave the warehouse on September 9th 2012 (which gives them apporximately three months to do whatever they need to do before the "disaster" is due).
*During an interview for G4, one of the creators said that the game starts 1-2 hours after AC1 ended.
*Compared with the previous game the period is stretched over 40 years compared with the one year.
Assassin's Creed is a sandbox style action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The game was released for Xbox 360 and PS3 in November 2007 and for PC in April 2008.

The game centers around use of a machine dubbed the "Animus", which allows its user to view the genetic memories of his or her ancestors, specifically a bartender named Desmond Miles. As Desmond relives the memories of one of his ancestors, the Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad who lived in the Holy Land during the Third Crusade, details of a battle between two ancient sects, the Knights Templar and the Assassins, emerge as both scour for an artifact known only as a "Piece of Eden".

The game received primarily positive reviews, for both its story and its gameplay, and received several awards at the 2006 E3. In November 2009, Assassin's Creed II was released as a sequel.

Gameplay
Assassin's Creed is a nonlinear action-adventure video game during which the player controls Altaïr, whose life is experienced through the Animus by Desmond Miles. The overall goal of the game is to rise through the ranks of the Assassins Brotherhood by carrying out a series of assassination missions ordered by the leader of the Order, Al Mualim. In doing so, Altaïr travels from Masyaf to cities in the Holy Land, specifically, Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus.

Upon arrival in any of the cities, Altaïr must locate an agent of the Brotherhood who will provide a safe house and basic knowledge of the target. It is up to Altaïr to perform additional intelligence gathering via eavesdropping, interrogation, meeting with informers and fellow assassins, and gathering important items. It is only after Altaïr has gathered enough information that he can safely and successfully carry out the assassination. After successfully completing assassinations, Altaïr returns to the Brotherhood and is rewarded with a better weapon and then given another set of targets.

While performing the necessary missions, Desmond must direct Altaïr to high points in the city to further synchronize the memories which maps out the city that he is currently located in. Other side quests include tracking and killing Templars, flag collecting, and saving citizens who are being threatened by city guards.

Altaïr needs to carry out most of his missions without being noticed by officials. The game uses the Alertness Level Meter to inform the player of how noticeable Altaïr is to the surrounding individuals, including the guards. Performing certain actions at certain times may or may not raise the local area's awareness level. If an area is on high alert, all citizens will run and scatter in various directions as guards chase and attempt to bring down Altaïr. To reduce the alertness level, Altaïr must break the guards' line of sight, find a hiding place or blend in with wandering scholars (who coincidentally are dressed similar to Altaïr) or with citizens sitting on benches.

To conduct many of the assassinations and various other tasks, Altaïr is capable of both high and low profile commands, both of which affect the alertness level. Low profile commands will allow Altaïr to blend into crowds, hide, and use Altaïr's hidden blade to attempt quiet and low profile assassinations. High profile commands increase alertness at a greater level and include free running, attacking foes, and high profile assassination attempts.

Health in the game is measured as the level of synchronization between Desmond and Altaïr's memories. When Altaïr is injured, it is experienced as a deviation from the actual memory that occurred and synchronization decreases. If there is complete desynchronization, the current memory that Desmond is experiencing ends and restarts at the last checkpoint. If complete synchronization is obtained, Desmond as Altaïr is able to use "Eagle Vision", which has the Animus highlight all visible characters in the current setting in specific colors depending on their status (friend, foe, target).

Because Altaïr's memories are being rendered by a computer, "glitches" may often be experienced with nucleotides and error messages appearing. Such glitches can be used to help identify targets and if the player reacts quickly enough, may be used to provide other vantage points during the cutscene.

Plot
Spoiler

Desmond Miles, a bartender, is kidnapped by the company Abstergo Industries for use as a test subject in the "Animus", a device that can stimulate the recall of ancestral memories. Abstergo intends to put Desmond in the device to recall the role of his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn La-Ahad, a member of the Assassin Brotherhood during 1191 as part of the Third Crusade in the Holy Land. Desmond has trouble adjusting to the device, but eventually relives Altaïr's exploits over the next several days. The game then primarily takes Altaïr's point-of-view, with occasional swaps to Desmond, due to glitches in the Animus.

Altaïr is first shown attempting to retrieve one of a series of artifacts known as the "Pieces of Eden" from Solomon's Temple with the help of Malik and his brother, but is stopped by Robert de Sablé, Grand Master of the Knights Templar and sworn enemies of the assassins. While retrieving the treasure, Altaïr breaks all three tenets of the Assassin's Creed ("Stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent," "Hide in plain sight" and "Do not compromise the Brotherhood") within the opening minutes of gameplay to attempt to kill de Sablé, but fails. In the commotion,&nbsp;Malik's brother is killed and he loses an arm. When Altair returns to the Assassins' stronghold at Masyaf with apologies, Malik, who survived de Sable, came back with the artifact and curses of Altair's arrogance.

After narrowly defeating a retaliatory attack by the Knights Templar, Al Mualim, leader of the Assassins, demotes Altaïr to a novice but gives him another chance to rise through the ranks of the Brotherhood. Al Mualim assigns Altaïr the task of assassinating nine key figures across the Holy Land in Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus, to attempt to bring peace between the Crusader and Saracen forces. Each target is based on an actual historical figure from the Third Crusade, including Majd Addin (Regent of Jerusalem), Garnier de Nablus (Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller), Jubair al Hakim (a eminent scholar in Damascus), Abu'l Nuqoud (the wealthiest man in Damascus), Robert de Sablé, Grand Master Sibrand of the Teutonic Knights and William V, Marquess of Montferrat (Regent of Acre).

Altaïr completes each task, learning how each target is connected to Robert and the Templars, and how together they aim to end the Crusade and place the Holy Land under their own control. With men on both sides killed, he discovers that de Sablé's last ploy is to attempt to unite Christian and Muslim against their new common enemy, the assassins themselves. Altaïr defeats de Sablé before Richard the Lionheart, failing to convince the king that an end to the war would be welcome to both sides. From de Sablé he discovers that Al Mualim is himself a member of the Knights Templar, and used Altaïr to kill the other members so he could keep the treasure for himself.

Altaïr quickly returns to Masyaf to accost his master, who reveals the truth: the Piece of Eden which he had received from one of the men in the library after Altaïr's transgression creates illusions. He denounces religion and other seemingly supernatural events (e.g. the parting of the Red Sea, the Ten Plagues of Egypt and the presence of the Greek Gods in the Trojan War) as illusions caused by it, then states his intention to use the artifact to compel mankind into a brainwashed state and so bring an end to all conflict. Altaïr is eventually able to see through deceptions created by the artifact to kill Al Mualim. When Altaïr recovers the artifact, the Piece of Eden activates, showing a holographic view of the world with numerous locations of other Pieces of Eden marked across the globe.

When the process is complete, Desmond learns that Abstergo is a modern-day version of the Knights Templar, and are already seeking other artifacts at locations identified in Altaïr's memory. He further learns that the modern-day assassins had tried to rescue him before the memory was complete but had failed. Desmond was to be killed after completion, but a researcher named Lucy Stillman saves him from death and at one point, tucks her ring finger into her palm, referring to the Assassins' tradition of cutting off the same finger.

Though Desmond remains trapped in the Abstergo laboratory, his experience in the Animus has created a "bleeding effect" of Altaïr's life in his own, allowing him to see strange messages painted on the walls of his room, as well as allowing Desmond to use Altaïr's eagle vision. The messages all deal with various forms of the end of the world from different cultures, including several references to the date December 21, 2012, the date that Abstergo plans to launch a satellite that will "permanently end the war". It is hinted at that this will be by the same method that Al Mualim hypnotized Masyaf, only on a larger scale. The game ends with Desmond wondering what these images all mean and who could have drawn them.
Development
Game Development
In one of the original interviews with IGN, game producer Jade Raymond described Altaïr as a "medieval hitman" with a "mysterious past" and definitely not a time traveler. In October 2007, IGN Australia interview described the lead character's ability to climb and free run as being designed by the individuals who designed the same for the Prince of Persia.

In December 2006, Kristen Bell who voiced Abstergo researcher and employee Lucy Stillman, gave the first concrete information about the plot, confirming a focus on genetic memory and a corporation's search for descendants of an assassin.

Ubisoft also released "developer's diary" videos on the game's website with members of the development team, including creative director Patrice Désilets and producer Jade Raymond, explaining the thought processes behind the various aspects of the game.

Soundtrack Development
The musical score for Assassin's Creed was composed by Jesper Kyd and the entire soundtrack was developed to "capture the gruesome atmosphere of medieval warfare but also be edgy and contemporary." The score was written to contain orchestral music with dark and ominous overtones. Many of the tracks also contain choruses and vocal tracks in Latin to cement the darker elements of the game and the time period of the game's setting.

Six tracks were released on the Ubisoft website for those individuals who purchased the game. The soundtrack is also available in iTunes Music Store and Amazon MP3.
A limited collector's edition of the game was released in North America alongside the standard release. The North American edition contains a collectable three inch Altaïr, Penny Arcade Comics, a mini strategy guide and a bonus disc. The bonus disc includes behind the scenes videos, developer diaries, trailers, production team interviews, and the winners of the Assassin's Creed short film contest.

A European limited edition of the game was also released which included a twelve inch Altaïr figure, art book, and bonus disc. The bonus disc contains several short films and content similar to the North American version.
Prequel and Sequel
On February 5, 2008, Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles was released for Nintendo DS as a prequel for Assassin's Creed. Developed by Gameloft, a mobile version was released for the iPhone and iPod Touch in April 2009.

In January 2009, Ubibsoft confirmed the production of Assassin's Creed II which was released for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in November 2009. The sequel continues the story started in Assassin's Creed with a different set of genetic memories created to be explored by the player.
* The Assassins are based on an Islamic sect known as the Order of the Hashshashin from which the term assassin originates, the idea for it coming from Blitzkrieg to Desert Storm: The Evolution of Operational Warfare by Robert M. Citino along with Bartol's novel Alamut.
* One of the key inspirations of Raphael Lacoste, the art director and production designer of Assassin's Creed, was Orientalist paintings, particularly the lithographs of the Holy Land and Syria by David Roberts.
* The popular phrase used to describe Assassin's Creed's gameplay "La'shai sahih bel kullu shai'n mumkin" is Arabic for "Nothing is true. Everything is permitted." This quote is generally attributed to the founder of the Hashshashin, Hassan-i Sabbah.
* The case of the game appeared in the "The Dinner Party" episode of popular UK Television series The IT Crowd. Roy picked it up on his way out of the apartment of a woman who he had just walked home asking, "Could I have a lend of this?"
May the Father of Understanding guide us

The Knights Templar is a military religious order created during the First Crusade and are the sworn enemies of the Assassins. They officially seek to create a perfect world, but most of their members are power hungry and wish to do it by any means necessary, including destruction of free will, which the Assassins strive to protect. The order survives through the Third Crusade and exists through the Renaissance even until the Modern Times.

Ideals and Goals
The Knights Templar originally sought lasting peace the Christian way. However, with their discovery of the Pieces of Eden, they changed. As powerful religious and political figures spread their lies, they began realize there was no God or Great Power, only men with power and those without. They became Atheists, while maintaining the pretense and tradition of Roman Catholics and retaining friends in the Vatican to avoid suspicion and for personal habit. With no afterlife or ultimate punishment or reward after death, there was no real reason to oblige by such morality. It also made them perceive that only this life was important, rather than preparing for a non-existent next life. With this new view, the corruption of the world shone to them like an ugly light. With so many lower class people kept in line with the promise of a next life and so many upper class men blissfully ignoring such ideals, the Templars vowed to make a better world, one of lasting peace, no matter the cost. This lasting peace, as they thought, would be brought about by the Pieces of Eden, where they intend to use it to make everyone usher in a world of forced (with a heavy heart) but lasting peace.

As time progressed, however, the Templars more or less sought and used the Pieces of Eden, not for the honourable intention of peace, but for the power and knowledge it brings, knowing that only this life was important. Their goals changed as they sought to control and unify the entire world under their grasp using the Pieces of Eden in a way similar to a "New World Order".

History
Third Crusade
Their main goal during the Crusades was to bring peace to the Holy Land by usurping the rule of Saladin and undermining the efforts of Richard the Lionheart while both were more concerned with fighting each other, but the ways they do it are both ruthless and barbaric. They try to control peoples' free will and will ruthlessly kill anyone who is against them, especially the Assassins. They are good at manipulation, as they have members in both the Crusader and Saracen armies, allowing themselves to manipulate both Richard the Lionheart and Saladin for their own gain and even manipulated the other knight orders like the Knights Hospitalier, Knights Teutonic and even the Assassins, whose leader, Al Mualim, was a member of the Templars, but later chose to betray them by stealing the Piece of Eden for his own purposes.

Later on, the Templars use the assassinations of Altaïr of those who are secretly Templars on both sides of the Holy War to bring both the Saracen and the Crusaders to fight against the common enemy, the Assassins. This failed, however, with the death of Robert de Sable at the hands of Altaïr. Altaïr then went back to Masyaf to kill the last Templar, his grandmaster, Al Mualim. However, even with the death of all the Templar leaders, they still persist.

They tend to attack more skilfully and take more hits than normal guards. Templars should be dealt with while expressing extreme caution and solid battle skills. These soldiers are usually stationary, and on the lookout for the Assassins, their sworn enemies, who they are engaged with in a low-scale war.

Renaissance
The Templars of the Renaissance seek to control several key regions in Italy to form them under one group, under the dominance of the Templars. With this, the Templars will not only gain fortune, power and influence, but will also advance the common ideals of Templars throughout the world.

In the beginning, the Auditore family were living in relative peace, without the knowledge that Giovanni Auditore has become involved in a conspiracy that involves the Templars' actions. Soon after, the Auditore were victim to the conspiracy with the help of the traitor Uberto Alberti. This begins Ezio's quest to hunt down the people affiliated with this event, not knowing that those people he is about to assassinate are Templars.

Ezio's intervention of the goals of the Templars in Italy caused them to fail to succeed in uniting all of Italy under a single banner. Later on, after Ezio's numerous encounters with the Templars, the "Grand Master" of the Templars, Rodrigo Borgia, has become Pope Alexander VI, essentially becoming the most powerful man in Italy, but also the only known remaining Templar in the Renaissance. Ezio locates The Vault with the use The Codex pages and his recovered Piece of Eden, wherein the Vault is located in Rome which Rodrigo has control under. Ezio goes to Rome and fights Rodrigo who seems not to care about being a spiritual leader and is only interested in the power it brings him and the possession of the Staff, a Piece of Eden. This indicates that the Templar ideals did not change over the years. Eventually, Rodrigo is defeated but not killed, causing a noticeable decrease in Renaissance Templars.

It is also indicated in the Glyph sequences made by Subject 16, that the Templar Seal is the Mark of Cain. This indicates that the principle ideas of the Templars seems to have existed for much longer. Also in these sequences, several influential people who are Templars, used the Pieces of Eden to further spread their influence over the world, hoping to control the world in a kind of "New World Order".

Members
Originally crusaders of unprecedented skill, as time progressed, they began to act secretly, utilizing powerful and influential people to further their cause. Often, these people are lured to being Templars by the promise of power and glory.
There are groups who act as unofficial divisions of the Templars, unrelated to them publicly, but in fact commanded by Templars (some of them through the membership of their leaders and others are part of the Templar Order itself).

Ordre du Temple in French, the Knights Templar are amongst the most famous of the Western Christian military orders involved in the war. They are well known by the distinctive white mantles with a red cross. Officially endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church around 1129, the Order became a favored charity throughout Christianity, and grew rapidly in membership. Because the Templars' existence was tied closely to the Crusades; when the Holy Land was lost, support for the Order faded.

They were among the most skilled fighters at the time, which is reflected in the game. Their ruthlessness against non-Catholics was also infamous; this also is reflected in the game.
