Venezia (English: Venice) was an island city in northern Italy and capital to the Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia. It is famous for its expansive canal system. Venice is the largest settlement in Assassins Creed II, with 5 districts, San Polo, San Marco, Dorsoduro, Cannaregio and the Castello districts.

History
During the 15th Century, Venice was capital of the Most Serene Republic of Venice (Venetian: (Serenìsima) Repùblica Vèneta or Repùblica de Venesia, Italian: Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia), often referred to as La Serenissima in reference to its title in Venetian, and largest city of the republic. Historically founded by refugees from the Hunnic and Germanic invasion of Padua, Aquileia, and Altino, Venice developed to become a major trade and naval power in southern Europe, and by the year 1499 was engaged in sporadic conflict with the Ottoman Empire.

Even during the 13th Century Venice had a notable Assassin presence, the area surrounding Venice was home to an assassin and his son – Domenico. Both enjoyed the patronage of the famed explorer Marco Polo, an ally of the Assassins. Their presence continued on into the 15th Century, occupying positions of command amongst the thieves, mercenaries and courtesans of the city.

By the Renaissance Era, Venice was one of the richest cities in the world. It consisted of five districts. The San Polo District was the center of commerce, containing many markets, and was also the location of the Venetian Thieves' Guild. The San Marco District was the administrative center of the city, containing government buildings such as the Palazzo Ducale, the residence of the Doge. The Dorsoduro District attracted many artists, and was where many festivals in Venice, such as Carnevale, took place. The Castello District was largely centered around the Venetian military, and was where its powerful navy was based and maintained. The Canareggio District was a run-down area that eventually became Venice's ghetto, the area to which Jews were relegated, forbidden to go elsewhere in the city.

Following the Templar failure to capture Florence during the Pazzi conspiracy, Rodrigo Borgia and his allies – the Barbarigo family – step up their plans to take control of the city of Venice. Influencing powerful members of Venetian government, such as Carlo Grimaldi, the Knights Templar assassinated the Doge Giovanni Mocenigo and placed one of their own on the throne; Marco Barbarigo. By this time however, the Florentine assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze had arrived in Venice and begun to counter the Templar plot.

Following the assassination of Marco Barbarigo and the ascension of his brother Agostino, an ally to the Assassins, Ezio Auditore chased down the last remaining Barbarigos' Silvio, cousin to Agostino, and his man servant Dante Moro to L'Arsenale di Venezia and liberated the city's military district. It was here that the assassin learned that the Templar plot to acquire Venice had merely been a distraction for the assassins', so that the Templar's might safely dispatch their vessel to Cyprus.

Landmarks
Like Florence, Venice was home to many notable landmarks; these included the Basillica, Piazza and Campanile di San Marco, the Palazzo Ducale, the Grand Canal, the Little Canal, and Rialto Bridge. Annually, the city hosted the famed Carnevale in the south of the city. Typically, it was celebrated with fireworks, carnival performers and a series of games; the winner being awarded with a Golden Mask that permitted entrance to the Doge's personal party.
Basilica di San Marco
Basilica di San Marco
The Basilica di San Marco was a famous cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice. The most famous of the city's churches and one of the best known examples of Byzantine architecture, it lay on the Piazza San Marco adjacent and connected to the Palazzo Ducale.

For its opulent design, gilded Byzantine mosaics, and its status as a symbol of Venetian wealth and power, from the 11th century on the building was known by the nickname Chiesa d'Oro (Church of Gold).

At some point in its history, the Basilica became home to one of six Assassin's Tomb hidden throughout northern Italy. The tomb was buried beneath the Basilica, and was accessible only after pulling four timed triggers.

Its high, blank walls made it unscalable from all sides, protecting the palace from intruders; within was a large courtyard flanked on all sides by an arched corridor. It was here that Ezio assassinates Carlo Grimaldi, who had in turn just assassinated the Doge, Giovanni Mocenigo.

After reclaiming the Apple of Eden from Girolamo Savonarola in Florence, and collecting all the pages of the Codex, Ezio Auditore da Firenze and the rest of the Assassins prepare themselves to learn where the fabled Vault lies.

I Came...
With all members of the order meeting in Mario's study at Monteriggioni, Ezio inspected what was written beneath the Codex Pages that was placed on the wall. He assembled them as members of the order looked on, and successfully finished, revealing the map of the world which showed the locations of other Pieces of Eden (41 in total). Ezio marveled that the landmasses depicted on the map didn't exist. Machiavelli answered that they did, but most likely had yet to be discovered, "or rediscovered" as he added.

To Ezio's shock, he then saw that the much-talked-about Vault was located roughly where the city of Rome stood. It was then that he theorized that Rodrigo Borgia became Pope so as to get his hands on the Papal Staff. When Teodora questioned Ezio's meaning, Mario Auditore explained the prophecy from the Codex, stating that two Pieces of Eden were needed to open the Vault, one of the Apples and the Staff. The other Assassins began to speculate about what the Vault would contain, and expressed their fears of what Borgia would do once he had attained it.

Ezio opted that he would confront Borgia and try to open the Vault himself. The other Assassins agreed, offering to "cause trouble in the city" to keep the Borgia guards from stopping Ezio. His mission planned, and with final vengeance in sight, Ezio departed for Rome.
b
Ezio arrived in Rome outside Castel Sant'Angelo and began to scale the building and climbed on to the Passeto di Borgo. Using horses, he was quickly able to traverse the wall and kill all of the troops on it. Ezio killed all of the guards on the wall against all of the odds until he reached an entry point into the Capella Sistina. Traversing along the beams and ropes high above the ground, Ezio made his way to within striking range of the Pope and then struck from above, hitting Borgia with some force, seemingly knocking him unconscious.

Holding Borgia at his mercy, Ezio allowed his anger and hate at Borgia to overwhelm him, remembering all too well Borgia's part in his family's destruction. But as he made to deal the death blow, Borgia awakened and with a snarl, smashed Ezio aside with the Staff. Before anyone in the Chapel could react, Borgia used the Staff's powers to drain the life energy from the assembled priests and guards to energize himself; only Ezio, protected by the Apple's power, was immune. Rodrigo demanded that Ezio handed the Apple over to him; Ezio bluntly told the Pope to take it from him, then used the Apple's power to make copies to produce four spectral doppelgangers of himself. Ezio and Borgia engaged in a brief duel, and after fighting his way through Ezio's duplicates, Borgia collapsed from exhaustion. Ezio told Borgia to put down the Staff and accept his offer of a quick death, but Borgia, asking if Ezio would give up so easily if their positions were reversed, again made use of the Staff's power, blasting Ezio off his feet and turning himself invisible. As Ezio recovered, Borgia seized the Apple from him and combined it with the Staff, magnifying its powers greatly. With that, Rodrigo used the Staff to lift Ezio into the air and suspend him in midair. As the Assassin dangled helplessly, Rodrigo stabbed him in the side with a knife, then ended the Staff's hold, dropping the badly injured Ezio to the floor. Just before he passed out from blood loss, Ezio saw Borgia descend down a hidden staircase in the Capella's floor.

The Vault
Some time later, Ezio regained consciousness. His wounds were not fatal and so he got back to his feet and investigated the altar which he had seen Rodrigo disappear into. Finding the hidden doorway, Ezio followed the pope down the staircase into a strange underground corridor until he came to a large, open chamber below him; the atrium of the Vault. Below him, he could see Rodrigo, desperately trying to open the door. Ezio dropped down and, casting aside his sword, knives and pistol, challenged Borgia to one last fight, free of trickery, ancient artefacts or weapons. Borgia reluctantly accepted and the pair brawled with nothing but their fists.

As they fought, Ezio demanded to know what lay in the Vault that the Templars wanted so badly. Rodrigo showed surprise that the Assassins were unaware of the truth and claimed that God was what lay within. Ezio was somewhat skeptical and asked what Rodrigo intended to do with this knowledge, to which Borgia replied he intended to release God and seize his power, a feat made possible through the Staff and Apple. Ezio remarked that he was doubtful a couple of ancient relics could harm a god, but Rodrigo sneered that he knew nothing, that his images and views on God were taken from a book written by men. When Ezio challenged Borgia for dismissing Christianity's central text, Rodrigo laughed, saying he had only become Pope to gain access to the Vault and the power such a position granted. He claimed not to believe a single word of the Bible, deriding it and every other religious text as superstitious lies.

After a lengthy fight, Ezio gained the upper hand; seizing Borgia by the throat, he throttled his old enemy into submission and held him at blade point. Astounded, Borgia yelled that Ezio couldn't do it, as it was his destiny as the Prophet to open the Vault. But Ezio set Borgia straight; he was not the Prophet, nor had he ever been. Beaten and humiliated by this revelation, Borgia told Ezio to kill him and be done with it, but Ezio refused to kill for the sake of vengeance, accepting this by telling Borgia "Killing you won't bring my family back". Leaving his defeated nemesis on the floor, Ezio remarked on how Borgia had been beaten- because "Nothing is true, everything is permitted"- and paid him no more heed. Turning to the Vault, Ezio used the combined power of the Staff and Apple to open a chamber directly in front of him, and then entered.

The Warning
Entering the Vault, Ezio was confronted by a speaking image of a female figure. After confirming he was the Prophet by showing the figure the Apple, the woman remarked that they must speak, though she seemed not be speaking to him. Ezio asked who she was; the woman replied that she had died with the name Minerva, but had been known by many others, as had the others buried with her, such as Juno and Jupiter. Astounded, Ezio theorized that they were gods; Minerva laughed at this, saying that she and her kind were not gods, they had simply come before. She remarked that humanity had not understood them when they existed, but while they couldn't comprehend her, they would comprehend her warning.

Ezio remarked that her words made no sense to him, but Minerva replied they weren't meant for him, confusing Ezio further, since no one else was here. Minerva snapped that she wasn't communicating with Ezio but through him; his part in all this was finished. She explained that Ezio was an anchor for the one she wished to communicate with, and politely asked him to be silent to assist this. Ezio listened as she delivered a confusing warning of an impending celestial disaster to an individual called 'Desmond', before fading away. As she departed, Ezio begged her to wait, since he still had so much to ask, but she vanished without stopping, leaving Ezio's questions unanswered.

Aftermath
Having succeeded in their mission to reach the Vault and prevent the Templars obtaining its contents, the Assassins withdrew from Rome and Ezio retired to Monteriggioni, hoping to recover from his trials. However, unknown to all, the vengeful Rodrigo Borgia was plotting a way to bring the Assassin Order, Ezio in particular, to its knees once and for all. Meanwhile, Desmond is pulled out of the Animus because his hideout is under attack by Abstergo. Warren Vidic had sought to recapture Desmond and Lucy, but his men were defeated. Unfortunately, the Assassins had to escape from any potential reinforcements, and were thus unable to pursue Vidic.
Roma (English: Rome) was a major city in Renaissance Italy, capital of the Papal State, and headquarters to the Italian sect of the Templar Order. Today it is the capital of the Italian Republic

Renaissance era
The defacto capital of the Italian peninsula, as well as its largest city, Rome had been the headquarters of the Knights Templar for an unknown amount of time by the late 15th Century. In 1476, Rodrigo Borgia, Grand Master of the Knights Templar and a powerful figure in Vatican politics briefly left the city to discuss his Order's plans before returning to get Papal approval.

In 1492, Rodrigo Borgia became Pope Alexander VI, and head of the Papal State and Catholic Church. Ruling from Rome, he was left alone by the Assassins for the most part until 1499, when Ezio Auditore da Firenze learned that the location of The Vault was in Rome, beneath the Sistine Chapel. During his journey through Rome, Ezio did not visit any of Rome's shops, landmarks of notable locations, heading directly for his confrontation with Borgia, and then leaving.

Following the assault of Cesare Borgia on the Assassin headquarters of Monteriggioni, Ezio Auditore returned to Rome to exact his revenge, assuming control of Tiber Island. Rome in this time had fallen far behind its fellow cities of Florence and Venice, and had stagnated in terms of development under the thumb of the Borgia. The Borgia maintain oppression over the city with the Borgia Towers located throughout Rome which prevent shops from opening. In order to free Rome of the Borgia's influence Ezio must kill the overlords in the towers and then burn it to the ground. The city overall is three times the size of Florence (Oltrarno District included). In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Ezio's apprentices are sent to different countries in Europe and join Ezio in Rome. Also it is revealed that instead of renovating one villa like in Assassin's Creed II, you will be able to renovate all five districts of Rome.

Landmarks
Landmarks in Rome included the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the Passetto di Borgo, Castel Sant'Angelo and Sistine Chapel.

During Assassin's Creed II
The city of Rome is accessible in AC2, the city however only appears in the last mission strand. Once you have completed the game it is not accessible again.

Trivia
*The city of Rome will be the largest city ever seen in an Assassin's Creed game. It will be three times larger than Florence, which features in Assassin's Creed II.
Garnier de Naplouse is the second Templar assigned by Al Mualim for Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad to assassinate. He is a doctor and Grand Master of the Knights Hospitalier in the city of Acre and a secret member of the Knights Templar.

Description
Garnier de Naplouse was exiled from France for the cruel and inhumane treatment of his patients. He viewed them less as people but as test subjects. He later re-established his mad business in the city of Acre where he treated his patients cruelly by conducting experiments on them, torturing them, and not allowing them leave (even going so far as having his men break their legs). In order to not draw attention to his acts, he forcefully took his patients from the surrounding cities of Jerusalem and Damascus with help of Talal, a fellow member of the Templars. He had been protected in Acre due to the amount of money his family had donated towards the war effort.

Though claiming to be a man of knowledge, Garnier lacked ethics. He never saw the price of knowledge as too high, even if it had to be paid with another man's blood.

Death
Garnier was assassinated within his Hospitalier Fortress by Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad while attending to his victims. Altaïr first saw him attending to a patient who was trying to escape. Garnier had his men break the man's legs so it wouldn't happen again. During his monologue after his assassination, he spoke of how he was actually helping people. He claimed that the people he took were among the poorest and most ill of the other cities, and that many have recovered and thanked him for his help. He said his methods were necessary to free people from the "prisons of their own minds".
I admit, without the Piece of Eden - which you stole from us - my progress was slowed. But there are herbs, mixtures and extracts. My guards are proof of this: they were madmen before I found and freed them from the prisons of their own minds... And with my death, madmen they will be again.

Altaïr: You truly believe you were helping them?
Trivia
*Garnier de Naplouse (also known as Garnier de Nablus) was a real-life leader of the Knights Hospitalier, who ruled from 1190 to 1192. In contrast to the in-game depiction, the real-life Garnier was a courageous and brave individual who led the Hospitaliers and the Crusaders to many victories: not a sadistic and cruel individual as portrayed in the game.
*It is much easier to air assassinate Garnier de Naplouse than to assassinate him from the ground, because his "patients" will push you around which will blow your cover very easily.
*Another method is to blend with the scholars and you will eventually pass by Garnier. This is just as effective, but it is much slower, than air assassination.
*His final words are the first time that the Piece of Eden is referred to as such, rather than just "the Artifact."
Sibrand is the seventh target Al Mualim orders Altaïr to assassinate. Sibrand is the newly appointed Master of the Knights Teutonic, in charge of the port area of the Middle District within the city of Acre.

Biography
Assassin's Creed
Sibrand had become paranoid after the deaths of his Templar "brothers", and felt that his time is approaching with the Assassin. This can be seen during one of the eavesdropping investigations: as two soldiers are speaking about Sibrand's attitude, he walks up and suspects them of plotting against him. Then, he berates them for not working and charges them to double all the patrols.

After completing enough investigations, Altaïr attends a disturbance within the docks as one with the crowd: Sibrand has accused a scholar of being an assassin, poisoned by fear. After further accusations he kills the innocent man. He then positions himself defensively on a ship he intends to sail on. Unknowingly setting the stage for a difficult but not impossible assassination strike on his life, Altaïr manoeuvres above the water safely while slowly approaching his intended target unnoticed. Finally reaching the ship, Altaïr assassinates the mad man shouting towards the city and shooting arrows at nowhere.

With his dying words, Sibrand explains his part in the Templars' scheme: he had commandeered every ship in Acre with the intent of establishing a blockade around the port, preventing Richard and other European monarchs from sending more troops to the Holy Land and thus making it easier for the Templars to destroy their enemies there and seize control of the kingdom.

Characteristics and personality
Witnessing the power of the Piece of Eden made it impossible for Sibrand to further believe in God. Knowing that this life is all he has, Sibrand developed a great fear of death. He explains this to Altaïr as he dies and seems much more certain than most characters in the game that there is no God of any kind.

Sibrand's experiences, along with the public assassinations of his comrades in Acre, Garnier and William, have made him extremely paranoid and he sees enemies everywhere, which has led to him doubling all the patrols in the Middle District (even threatening to withdraw the entire Teutonic Order from the field to defend him) as well as cowering deep within the docks out of fear that the assassins approach from anywhere, except surrounded by water, or so he thinks. He is quick to deal with supposed "traitors". At the time of his death in which Altaïr is sent to assassinate Sibrand, he is extremely fearful of the Assassins and distrustful of anyone wearing similar robes or attire of any kind, especially Scholars. When sneaking up to his boat, it is easy to hear him screaming "Fine! None of you will lift a hand in defence of your master, I'll take care of this heathen myself!".

Sibrand carries a Crusader longsword, a large bow and wears a great helm with horns in battle. He has a German accent.

Final Words
Sibrand: Please, don't do this!

Altaïr: You are afraid...

Sibrand: Of course I am afraid!

Altaïr: But you'll be safe now, held in the arms of your god.

Sibrand: Have my brothers taught you nothing!? I know what waits for me, for all of us!

Altaïr: If not your god, then what?

Sibrand: Nothing. Nothing waits...and that is what I fear.

Altaïr: You don't believe?

Sibrand: How could I, given what I know? What I've seen? Our treasure was the proof!

Altaïr: Proof of what?

Sibrand: That this life is all we have!

Altaïr: Linger a while longer then, and tell me of the part you were to play.

Sibrand: A blockade by sea, to keep the fool kings and queens from sending reinforcements once we...once we...

Altaïr: Conquered the Holy Land!?

Sibrand: Freed it, you fool, from the tyranny of faith!

Altaïr: Freedom!? You worked to overthrow cities, control men's minds, murdered any who spoke against you!

Sibrand: I followed my orders, believing in my cause, same as you.

Trivia
*Sibrand was a real-life leader of the Teutonic Knights: Meister (master) Sibrand. One of the first Teutonic Knights leaders, he was appointed around 1190.
*An in-game glitch can be found during Sibrand's assassination. To perform it, Sibrand must not be aware of your presence. When he is randomly shooting arrows on the front of his ship, approach and throw him into the sides of the boat. Sibrand will fall off his ship and into the water. You will then fail the mission (The game says that he has escaped). One of the reasons of failure for this mission is that his blood is required to complete the assassination and Altaïr cannot swim in-game. Or maybe Sibrand could swim (no proof as of yet and unlikely). This is unlikely as when assassinating William if you have him chase you to the upper walls of citadel it is possible to climb on top of the wall (he will as well) and push him off into the sea below; the same message will appear saying he has escaped because Altaïr cannot follow him down the cliff.
**There is also another "glitch" with this assassination. When Sibrand is at the front of the ship shooting his arrows and shouting, he is sometimes not wearing his helmet (which you clearly see him put on at the end of the starting cut-scene).
*Sibrand is also the only target in Assassin's Creed that you can see during an investigation. But he disappears before you have the chance of killing him.
*Like Talal in Jerusalem, vigilantes will attempt to stop Sibrand if he tries to escape from the docks.
*It should be noted that his view that theres nothing after his life on Earth is also stated in Altair's Codex in which he states that theres no Heaven or Hell, just nothing.
We are the Auditore da Firenze. We are Assassins.

The House of Auditore was a noble family of Florence. Its prominent period was very short (for approximately 100 to 200 years).

History
During the late 13th century, the Auditore family lived in Venice [though not under that name]. Some time before 1296, Domenico Auditore was inducted into the Assassins, under the tutelage of Dante Alighieri After Dante's death, Domenico was tasked to hide an important text in Spain, but was ambushed at sea by Templar pirates. With only his son remaining, he used the bank account given by Marco Polo to impersonate a nobleman in Florence, taking vocal lessons and studying architecture and classics, adopting the Auditore name. He then constructed a villa in the town of Monteriggioni, hunted the Templars and trained his son to fight them and collect the Codex pages. Before his death, he left the origins of the family engraved on stone plates in the family crypt hidden under Monteriggioni.

Over the years, the family gained in prominence even becoming a close ally of the Medici dynasty, ruler of Florence. However in 1476, approximately 170 years after its creation, the Auditore family collapsed, victim of a conspiracy led by Rodrigo Borgia, Grand Master of the Templar Order, Uberto Alberti, a close friend of Giovanni Auditore before he betrayed the Auditore family to the Templars and the Pazzi family, enemies of the Auditore and secretly Templars. They were considered as traitors of the Republic and excluded from the nobility. Most of the male members of the family in Florence were executed only leaving Claudia, Maria and Ezio. After the execution, they took refuge in Monteriggioni under the protection of Mario Auditore, a condottiero with an army of mercenaries at his disposal to fight against the Templars in the region. He is as well the brother of Giovanni, patriarch of the family in Florence who was executed along with his two sons. His only remaining son, Ezio, took on his work and sought vengeance against those responsible for the death of his father and brothers. He contributed in restoring the villa and the city of Monteriggioni as well.

It is unknown how many persons wore the name of Auditore after the events of Assassin's Creed II, but most of the information about the Auditore family has been erased from History after the conspiracy and the name was most likely lost over the centuries. The lineage however kept extending with two known descendants of Ezio Auditore in the 21st century: Desmond Miles and "Subject Sixteen".

Trivia
*Most likely unknown by its members, the Auditore family is descended directly from Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, one of the greatest warriors of the Assassin Order.
*If the Palazzo Auditore is visited during the Bonfire of the Vanities, Ezio can see his family face to face as a loving memory.
*After exploring the Auditore Family Crypt, it is discovered that the Auditore are not truly nobles, but only pose as nobles to cover the fact that they are Assassins.
*As soon as Ezio is born his father tells him that he is an Auditore, and he is a fighter, hinting the family's history of being Assassins.
Rome (Italian: Roma) was a major city in Renaissance Italy, capital of the Papal State, and headquarters to the Italian sect of the Templar Order.

Renaissance era
The defacto capital of the Italian peninsula, as well as its largest city, Rome had been the headquarters of the Knights Templar for an unknown amount of time by the late 15th Century. In 1476, Rodrigo Borgia, Grand Master of the Knights Templar and a powerful figure in Rome politics briefly left the city to discuss his Order's plans before returning to get Papal approval.

Though it is more oppressed and poor than Florence and Venice, it is four times larger than Venice ( the largest city in the game) in Assassin's Creed II. In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Ezio's apprentices are sent to different countries in Europe and join Ezio in Rome. Also it is revealed that instead of renovating one villa like in Assassin's Creed II, you will be able to renovate all five districts of Rome.
Forlì was a city in the region of Romagna, and the home of Caterina Sforza.

History
The land around Forli had been settled since the Paleolithic; the city's name comes from 'Forum Livii'.

By the 15th century, Forli was ruled by Girolamo Riario and was a part of Venice's coastal defense network.

Much later, Forli would be the birthplace of Benito Mussolini.

Landmarks
Forli's architecture is characterized by comparatively small buildings, greyish stonework, and flat rooftops.

Rocca di Ravaldino
Rocca di Ravaldino
Rocca di Ravaldino was the heavily walled and cannoned fortress of Forli. The Apple of Eden was briefly kept there. It serves as an Secret Location.
Trivia
*Caterina Sforza, who is featured in the game, was Countess of Forlì (from 1480 until 1500) and her legendary quotes are featured in the Battle of Forlì DLC of Assassin's Creed II: in 1488, her husband and Lord of Forlì, Girolamo Riario, was assassinated in a conspiracy led by the Orsis, a noble family of the city. She and her children were made prisoners. Since the fortress of Ravaldino, a citadel of strategic importance to the defense of the city, refused to surrender, Caterina offered to go to convince the Castellan, Tommaso Feo. The Orsinis believed the good intentions of Caterina because she left her children as hostages, but once inside she let loose a barrage of threats and promises of vengeance against her former captors and when they threatened to kill her children still in captivity she exposed her genitals from the fortress walls saying: "Ho con me lo stampo per farne degli altri!" (I have the instrument to bear more!). This last part is without historical veracity but it is said to be featured in the game (but in the main game, it is only mentioned by Shaun).
