===Early life===
Like his compatriots [[Benjamin Hornigold]], [[Edward Thatch]] and [[Edward Kenway]], Vane worked as a privateer under the British crown. As late as 1715 he operated under the command of privateer {{wiki|Henry Jennings}}, who was most notable for attacking Spanish ships salvaging cargo from the [[Spanish Treasure Fleet]] shipwreck site. However, with the Treaty of Utrecht making the life of a privateer unsustainable, Vane sailed for Nassau in 1716.

===Joining the Pirate Republic===
After arriving in [[Nassau]] in 1717, where he and [[Jack Rackham]] informed Edward Kenway of a large prize in a nearby [[Forts|fort]], Vane became a leading member of Nassau's pirate community.

He was present when [[Woodes Rogers]] arrived in Nassau to offer its residents the King's pardon, absolving them of their crimes if they chose to give up piracy. Unlike Benjamin Hornigold, Vane was not keen on accepting the pardon, and worked with Kenway to orchestrate an escape from the barricaded Nassau. Together, they planned to build a fireship with gunpowder to clear the blockade.

While Kenway stole the gunpowder from the British, Vane managed to secure the pine pitch. However, they overheard that Commodore [[Peter Chamberlaine]] intended to disregard Roger's orders and destroy all pirate ships in Nassau's harbors. In order to ensure the success of their plan, Vane suggested that Kenway deal with Chamberlaine.

After Chamberlaine was assassinated, Vane met up with Edward to load the gunpowder aboard Rackham's ship, the ''[[Royal Phoenix]]''. Before they left, Vane violently berated Rackham for smoking a pipe near the gunpowder. The fireship proved to be successful, destroying the ships blockading one of Nassau's harbors, allowing the ''[[Jackdaw]]'' and the ''Ranger'' to escape.

===Mutiny and marooning===
When Edward Thatch announced his retirement from piracy, Vane sailed to North Carolina in a bid to dissuade him, and convince Thatch to help take back Nassau. However, his efforts were in vain and he departed, empty-handed and cursing Thatch.

After Thatch's death at the hands of the British, Vane decided to help Kenway find the [[Observatory]]. The pair tailed the ''[[Royal African Pearl]]'', a [[Slavery|slave]] ship belonging to the [[Royal African Company]], in the hopes of finding information on the [[Sages|Sage]] [[Bartholomew Roberts]]. However, the ''Ranger'' was demasted and left adrift.

Following the ''Royal African Pearl'''s eventual capture, Rackham and the surviving crew mutinied against Vane and Kenway, commandeering the ''Jackdaw'' and marooning both of them on [[Isla Providencia]]. During their time on the island, Vane's behavior became increasingly erratic; he took to hiding in the jungle, only emerging to steal food that Kenway had gathered.

Growing frustrated with Vane's actions, Kenway pursued the man, and Vane fiercely retaliated with an arsenal of recovered weaponry. Despite this, Edward managed to neutralize Vane – but spared him – abandoning the man on the island while he escaped by commandeering a passing fisherman's [[schooner]].

===Imprisonment===
Vane was later found by British soldiers and taken to [[Port Royal]]. Kenway, who was also captured due to Bartholomew Roberts' treachery, managed to escape his gibbet and found the delirious Vane in his cell. Knowing that Vane's state of mind was beyond repair, Kenway left him behind, lamenting how he wished the pair could have parted as friends. Vane was eventually executed in 1721.

In 1718, Rackham led a mutiny against [[Charles Vane]] and [[Edward Kenway]] while raiding a Spanish slaving ship, marooning the two men on [[Isla Provindencia]]. He took control of the ''[[Jackdaw]]'' and planned on selling [[Adéwalé]] into slavery. Rackham barely lasted two months after accepting Governor [[Woodes Rogers]]' pardon, as Edward returned to Great [[Inagua]], where Rackham was left tied up by Adewale and [[Mary Read]].

After his execution by the [[United Kingdom|British]] in 1720, his body was left in a {{Wiki|Gibbeting|gibbet}} outside the fort at [[Kingston]], and was visited a year later by [[Edward Kenway]] during his escape from prison. Edward confessed that despite Jack's failings as both a sailor and a friend, it dismayed him to see him like that.

Birch became one of Edward Kenway's senior property managers, and began courting his daughter [[Jenny Kenway|Jenny]]. ===Recruiting Haytham===
Birch met Haytham Kenway in 1733 on his eighth birthday, when Birch accompanied the Kenway family on a trip to {{Wiki|White's|White's Chocolate House}} on Chesterfield Street. On the way back, the group was attacked by a mugger, who attempted to steal [[Tessa Kenway]]'s necklace.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

Birch threatened to kill the man, but was dissuaded by Edward. The two men smiled after putting aside their disagreement. Over the following two years, Birch became a frequent visitor to the Kenway household, and was deemed a suitable match for Jenny, although she disliked him.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

Birch also sent [[mercenaries]] from [[Edward Braddock]]'s regiment to blackmail Edward's gentleman's gentleman [[Jack Digweed]] into revealing the location of the journal, but he did not know where it was. Afterwards, Birch had a conversation with Haytham about his sword training, and learned that his father kept his steel sword in a secret compartment in the games room, indicating the journal's location.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

Jenny soon discovered Birch was a Templar, and informed her father, leading to a row in his office. Birch tried to threaten Edward into giving him the journal, but he refused. A day or so later, Birch sent his mercenaries to attack the Kenway Manor, who killed Edward, kidnapped Jenny and stole his journal. When Haytham met him in [[Prague]], Birch informed him that Tessa had died. After attending her memorial, Haytham discovered Digweed was living in west [[Germany]]. Birch travelled with him to find Digweed, but sent two of Braddock's mercenaries to reach him before he could reveal the truth to Haytham.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

As Haytham reached Digweed's location, he saw one of the mercenaries about to slit Digweed's throat. Chasing him into the forest, Birch took the opportunity to silence Digweed permanently. However, before Haytham killed the mercenary, he learned that his father was an Assassin who was killed for one of his possessions, and that the mercenary served in the [[British Army]] under Braddock, rousing Haytham's suspicions.
