Il Carnefice (1473 - January 1500) was an executioner active in the city of Rome during the late 15th and early 16th century. He was also a member of the Templar Order.

Biography
Working for the Borgia
Around 1497, Il Carnefice worked under the direct employment of Cesare Borgia, and often received instructions from him through Fiora Cavazza.

On one such instance, she brought him a list containing Cesare's next condemnations. Upon studying it, Il Carnefice acted serious, telling Fiora that her name was one of those listed, though he quickly revealed that he was only playing a prank on her, and admitted that he could not read.

While under the Borgia, Il Carnefice performed any execution assigned to him with both enthusiasm and brutality, chopping off the body parts of his victims and displaying them to his approving audience. Fiora once described him as a beast, one she found more disgusting than intimidating.

Death
In 1500, Il Carnefice forced himself onto a woman named Livia, only to have her hanged afterwards. The woman's husband later mourned her death, but was unable to remove her body down from the noose at the threat of being executed by Il Carnefice himself.

The grieving husband caught the attention of the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who decided to aid the man by bringing justice to Il Carnefice. Ezio infiltrated Il Carnefice's cliffside palazzo, where he was discussing his latest kill with an associate of his, and swiftly assassinated him with his hidden blade. With Il Carnefice dead, the executions of many innocent citizens were brought to a halt.

There's nothing in the history books about Il Carnefice, so I did a little digging in Abstergo's mainframe. Here's what I found: "A natural ally for the Borgia, Il Carnefice kills to the roar of an approving crowd."

The other small piece of information I could dig up is that he fancies himself as some sort of twisted artist. I guess that explains the crowd bit. I wonder if he does tricks while performing executions, or whether it's all in the subtle way he pulls the lever?

*"Il Carnefice" simply translates to "The Executioner."
*Il Carnefice's axe in the Story mode is not the same one he uses in Multiplayer. Instead, it is the Bearded Axe, a common weapon that is wielded by Brutes, and can be bought from Blacksmiths.
The Siege of Viana was a military conflict between the Kingdom of Navarre, whose forces were led by King John III of Navarre and Cesare Borgia commanding the Navarre army, and the Earldom of Lerin, under the command of Luis de Beaumont.
Inevitable matters
In 1503, Pope Alexander VI, Grand Master of the Templar Order died of poison, courtesy of his son Cesare Borgia. With his death, Rome was fully liberated from the Borgia's influential control. Subsequently following the murder of his father, Cesare was arrested by the newly appointed Pope, Julius II. In 1504, Cesare was exiled to Spain and imprisoned at the Castle of La Mota, Medina del Campo, for several years.

However, in 1506, Cesare escaped with the help of the Count of the city, who provided him with a rope. He dropped 70 meters to the ground, landing on top of a servant who had accompanied him, breaking his fall. Despite several fractured bones, Cesare was able to escape dressed in merchant clothes, and later joined his brother-in-law, King John III of Navarre, and to his luck, was granted command of the Navarrese army.

Following Cesare's arrest and exile to Spain, Ezio Auditore - now Il Mentore of the Assassin Order - was considering the possibility of Cesare's future threat. This he discussed at length with his closest friend, Leonardo da Vinci, at the Assassin stronghold of Tiber Island. Ezio worried about the manner in which Cesare had claimed that chains would not imprison him for long, as well as his vow not to die by the hands of man. Leonardo then encouraged Ezio to use the Apple, in order to see what would eventually become of Cesare.

Ezio proceeded to do so despite his initial protest and, upon gleaning information from the Piece of Eden, immediately left Rome. As Ezio made his decision to leave, Leonardo questioned Ezio about the newly restored Order, to which Ezio replied by saying "I built this Brotherhood to last, with or without me." As he departed, Ezio encouraged Leonardo to accept his gift of a large amount of money, to supplement the artist's minuscule salary, and guaranteed that the two would see each other again.
Reunion
By March of 1507, Ezio finally tracked Cesare down to Viana. However, by the time of his arrival, the siege on the town and castle was already well underway. As the Navarre and Viana infantry clashed on the battlefield, and the cannons destroyed the town and surrounding countryside, Ezio wasted no time and immediately charged into the fray.

Soon, he located Cesare alongside his men in the midst of the battle, fighting the Viana infantry. Without hesitation, Ezio lunged towards Cesare with his blade at the ready. However, Cesare was able to hold off the Assassin's attack, demanding to know how Ezio had discovered him. Ezio quickly claimed that the Apple Cesare had stolen from Mario Auditore had led him there.

Despite Cesare holding off Ezio's killing blow, Ezio eventually gained the upper-hand and overpowered Cesare, striking him across the throat. However, Cesare's armor protected him, and he managed to push Ezio aside. As he fled, he commanded his soldiers to attack, though Ezio fended them off with little effort. As he attempted to pursue Cesare, however, Ezio was stunned by a wave of cannon balls that impacted the battlefield all around him.

After regaining consciousness amidst several corpses of enemy soldiers, Ezio mounted a nearby horse and pursued his nemesis.

Countryside chaos
Riding through the Viana warzone on horseback, Ezio charged through the battlefield in an attempt to reach the ruins of what was once an olive field, however, cannon balls eventually killed his horse, forcing him to travel by foot. As Ezio made his way through the outskirts of the city, the chaos only grew worse, with the Navarre siege towers evidently closing in on the town. As Ezio drew closer to the crumbling town, making his way past the bodies of slaughtered soldiers, he eventually arrived at the olive field ruins, where an infantry of Viana soldiers had set up camp.

Stealthily killing any patrolling soldiers and dispatching any who challenged him, Ezio also overheard the soldiers speaking of Cesare's downfall, and the Assassin responsible. Upon reaching the peak of the hill, Ezio caught sight of Cesare, accompanied by several guards, entering the besieged town. As he did so, a woman rushed to Cesare's side, seeking assistance in looking for her injured son, but she was promptly killed and discarded by the Spanish General's men, with Cesare continuing to the city fortress.

Following some distance behind, Ezio continued onwards to the town, while the Navarre infantry reinforced their assault, attacking the city guards and torturing the civilians. Ezio made his way up a small slope and along the rooftops, avoiding the chaos below and dealing only with those that got in his way. Upon reaching the town square, he intervened in the battle, and fought off both the Navarre and Viana infantry before proceeding to climb a burning siege tower, in hope of proceeding onto the castle battlements.

As he climbed the interior of the burning siege machine - which had sustained heavy damage from cannon fire - Ezio was forced to perform a Leap of Faith off the top once he had reached it, due to the tower crumbling under its own weight. Landing safely, he began to search for an alternative route onto the walls. He arrived at the foot of the castle, and was immediately attacked by several waves of soldiers from both sides of the conflict. Despite being outnumbered, Ezio managed to successfully fend them off, and then discovered another siege tower that had managed to breach the castle walls.

Before proceeding, Ezio noticed Cesare and his men battling across the ramparts, indicating that it would only be a matter of time before the Navarre forces could secure victory, and secure a major hand in Cesare's re-taking of Rome. Successfully climbing the tower and defending himself from the attacking soldiers, Ezio ran across the battlements to face Cesare directly.

Final confrontation
Ezio finally reached Cesare, calling out for his attention and warning him that there was nowhere to run. After killing his attackers, Cesare immediately challenged the Assassin to a final duel.

As the siege raged all around them, the two men battled face-to-face for the first and last time. Cesare skillfully attacked Ezio with his sword and pistol, dodging his incoming blows and countering his attacks, while also periodically calling in waves of Navarre soldiers to reinforce him. Despite this, Ezio's own speed and skill were enough to defeat the soldiers and overpower Cesare by breaking off the pieces of his armor that protected him from a direct stab from the hidden blade.

After a lengthy battle, Ezio eventually managed to pin Cesare down beneath him with his hidden blade at the Templar's throat. Cesare then claimed that the throne was his right, to which Ezio responded that a leader could not merely take what he wished, and that a true one "empowers the people he leads." Cesare then declared that he would lead mankind into a new world, but Ezio rebuked him, wishing that no one would ever remember the name of Cesare Borgia.

Enraged and knowing his death was inevitable, Cesare repeatedly shouted that no mortal man could kill him, thus Ezio then declared he would leave Cesare in the "hands of fate" and threw him off the castle wall to his death. Subsequently, the siege concluded, and Cesare's body was buried in a marble tomb beneath the altar of the Church of Santa Maria with the inscription: "Here lies in little earth one who was feared by all, who held peace and war in his hand."

Aftermath
After the death of Cesare, Ezio then returned to Rome and was reunited with the other Assassins. Ultimately a year prior, in 1506, Eziodecided that the Apple was too dangerous for the hands of man, he then sealed the Apple away in a Vault beneath the Santa Maria Aracoeli, near the Colosseum.

Description
Ezio travels to Rome to assassinate Rodrigo Borgia and retrieve the Staff of Eden. When Ezio arrives at the base of the Castel Sant'Angelo, he promptly climbs it, onto the Pasetto di Borga, where he is confronted by many guards.

After Ezio dispatches them, he continues to make his way towards the Vatican on horseback. Upon reaching the Basilica di San Pietro, he enters, using the groups of monks to blend and hide from the guards. Moving such, he manages to enter the Capella Sistina, where Rodrigo is reciting the Nicene Creed.

Ezio then uses the scaffolding suspended over the chapel to make his way towards Rodrigo; leaping from above to assassinate him. As he begins to speak to Rodrigo, as he had done with all his other targets, Rodrigo opens his eyes, and uses the Staff to push Ezio away, and subdue everyone else in the Hall.

However, Ezio is immune to the effects of the Staff due to his possession of the Apple. Ezio then creates clones of himself (just as Al Mualim did against Altaïr) to assist him in his fight with Rodrigo. After the battle, Rodrigo is able to snatch the Apple from Ezio's grasp, and lifts him into the air with the Staff.

Rodrigo then stabs Ezio in the stomach, and leaves him to seek out the Vault. However, Ezio is able to regain his feet as he was not seriously wounded, and uses his Eagle Vision to find the secret entrance to the Vault.

Entering the Vault, he sees Rodrigo desperately trying to open the door to its inner chamber. Ezio then challenges Rodrigo to a fist fight, one without trickery, weapons, or ancient artifacts, to which Rodrigo agrees. After Ezio defeats Rodrigo in this duel, he spares him, as killing him would not bring his family back. He then opens the Vault, declaring that Rodrigo was not the Prophet, and that he had never been. He then enters the Vault and receives the message from Minerva.

*Rodrigo: How is it you resist? Oh! Kind of you to bring me the Apple. Now give it here!
*Ezio: Vai a farti fottere (Go fuck yourself).
*Rodrigo: (Laughs) Always the fighter. Just like your father. Well rejoice, my child, for you will see him again soon. You will give it to me!
*Ezio: As you wish.

Ezio splits into five duplicates of himself.

*Rodrigo: An impressive power, but if you think it's going to save you, you've another thing coming!

Ezio defeats Rodrigo in their first fight.
*Ezio: It's finished, Rodrigo! Lay down your arms, and I'll make sure the end comes swiftly.
*Rodrigo: Oh really, Ezio? And would you give up so easily were it the other way around?!

Rodrigo blasts Ezio back using the Staff. Ezio pulls out the Apple, only to have Rodrigo take it from him, placing it on top of the Staff. Rodrigo uses the combined power to lift Ezio from the ground and stab him. Ezio eventually gets up, and goes through a secret door to the Vatican Vault, where Rodrigo is struggling to open the entrance.

The Vault
*Ezio: What is this place?
Ezio drops down into the vault
*Rodrigo: Open, damn you! Open!
*Ezio: It's over, Rodrigo. No more tricks, no more ancient artifacts, no more weapons. Let's see what you are made of, old man.
*Rodrigo: All right then. If that's how you want to play it....

Ezio and Rodrigo engage in a fistfight

*Ezio: What do you even want with the Vault, Rodrigo?!

*Rodrigo: Don't you know what lies within? Or do you mean to tell me that the great and powerful Assassins didn't figure it out?

*Ezio: Figure what out?

*Rodrigo: God! It's God that dwells within!

*Ezio: You expect me to believe that God lives beneath il Vaticano?

*Rodrigo: A more logical location than a kingdom on a cloud, don't you think? Surrounded by singing angels and cherubim. Makes for a lovely image. But the truth is far more interesting.

*Ezio: Let's say I was to believe you -- what do you think he'll do when you open that door?

*Rodrigo: I don't care. It's not approval I'm after. Just power.

*Ezio: And you think he'll give it up?

*Rodrigo: Whatever lies beyond that wall won't be able to resist the Staff and Apple. They were made for felling gods.

*Ezio: God is meant to be all knowing. All powerful. You think a couple of ancient relics can harm him?

*Rodrigo: You know nothing, boy. You take your image of the creators from an ancient book; a book, mind you, written by men.

*Ezio: You are the Pope! And yet you dismiss the central text of your faith?!

*Rodrigo: (laughs) Are you so naive? I became Pope because it gave me access. It gave me power. Do you think I believe a single goddamned word of that ridiculous book? It's all lies and superstition. Just like every other religious tract written over the past ten thousand years.

Ezio grabs Rodrigo by the throat and strangles him. He then throws him to the ground.
*Rodrigo: You can't! YOU CAN'T! It's my destiny! Mine! I am the Prophet!
*Ezio: You never were...
*Rodrigo: Get it over with, then.
*Ezio: No. Killing you won't bring my family back. I'm done. Nulla è reale, tutto è lecito. Requiescat in Pace (Nothing is true, everything is permitted. Rest in Peace).

Outcome
*Rodrigo Borgia is spared.
*Ezio speaks to Minerva in the Vault and learns of her people.

Ezio is dragged through the town by some townsmen.

*Ezio: Basta! (Stop!) I can walk.

They fight their way toward the Villa and meet Claudia as she backs away from more attackers.

*Claudia: Ezio!

Ezio and Claudia make it into Mario’s study and make for the Sanctuary. A man runs outside to help, the other runs in toward the Sanctuary.
*Man: I will hold them back!
*Man with eye patch: We thought you had been killed, Ser Ezio.
*Ezio: Mario is dead. You must leave this place. Take mother to Firenze . Get me a horse.
*Claudia: You are not coming with us? Where are you riding?
*Ezio: To Roma.
*Maria: Go, my son, destroy them... but remember for whom we Assassins fight.

Outcome
Ezio, Claudia, Maria and the townspeople escape through the tunnels under the city. Ezio rides for Rome but collapses from his injuries on his way. Monteriggioni is lost.
Trivia
*The man with the eye patch is a traitor working for the Borgia. This would explain his surprise upon seeing the secret tunnel and his sudden eagerness not to continue along it.
The Dagger of Brutus is a legendary dagger that is available in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, obtained along with the personal Armor of Marcus Junius Brutus. It is thought to be the same weapon that Marcus used to kill Gaius Julius Caesar.

Having this unique weapon equipped will strike fear into the hearts of civilians, and will cause guards to flee faster from fights, mainly due to its brutal kill animations. It is the best short blade weapon in the game, with complete 5-star stats.

The dagger's kill animations are unique and they differ from those of other short blade weapons that Ezio equip himself with. Certain examples are the bone breaking move of the other short blades being replaced by several vicious stabs, and a move involving stabbing the opponent in the chest, then again in the back, before tossing the corpse aside (similar to some of the multiplayer unique kills). The reason behind such a gruesome animation could be derived from the actual assassination of Julius Caesar, where he was stabbed multiple times by his murderers, Brutus being one of them.

The dagger is unlocked and made usable by collecting all the Keys of Romulus from the different Lairs of Romulus, and will be found in the same underground chamber as the Armor of Brutus.

Trivia
*The Dagger of Brutus is modeled after a Roman Pugio, a type of dagger used as a secondary weapon by Roman soldiers during the 1st Century AD.
*When Ezio wields the Dagger of Brutus, enemy morale is reduced by 20 percent; at times ending the fight immediately after killing just one guard.
*You can deselect the Dagger of Brutus for a different short blade, also you can equip it while you have seperate armor other then the Armor of Brutus

The courtesans are one of the three factions of the Assassin's Creed series helping the main character, Ezio; the other two being the thieves and the mercenaries. Florentine courtesans are led by Paola, Venetian courtesans are led by Teodora Contanto, and Roman courtesans are let by Claudia Auditore.

Courtesans can work in many ways. All four can seduce a group of nearby guards, allowing Ezio to slip past, or they can hide Ezio by walking with him in a diamond formation (similar to how Altaïr blended with Scholars). Should Ezio encounter a group of guards while walking with the Courtesans, two of them will distract the guards, while the other two stay with Ezio in order to maintain the blend and help keep Ezio hidden.

Courtesans cannot perform any sort of free-running, and will go down very quickly in a fight. Therefore they should be avoided when looking for assistance in combat.
*Madonna Solari
*Lucia - a Courtesan who worked in the Rosa in Fiore. She was kidnapped by the slave traders, but they sent her back to alert the other girls of the ransom for Solari. It is presumable that she remained in the Rosa in Fiore after this incident, and worked under Maria and Claudia.
*Mina - a victim of the Templar Malfatto, who was a rogue doctor that preyed on prostitutes. Ezio Auditore finds her being being mourned by her friend in a back alley of Rome.
*Guilietta - a courtesan of the Rosa in Fiore. One of her fellow courtesans reported her suspicions about Guilietta and a client of hers to Ezio. After some investigation, the suspicions were proven that Guilietta had been selling Courtesans Guild secrets about the Assassins to their enemies. Ezio followed her to her client and killed him before her eyes. She tried to deny knowing that the man was a traitor, but Ezio sent her away and told her she was no longer welcome at the Rosa in Fiore brothel.

Achievement
The achievement/trophy, "Red Light Addict," can be gained by spending 5000 florins on them. One group of courtesans costs 150 florins, which means approximately 34 groups have to be hired to get the achievement.

Trivia
*A glitch can be found while running around the outside of Forlì. One of the hired Courtesans becomes stuck, separated from the rest of the group, and left behind, but does not officially leave the group as when distracting guards. The remaining three courtesans will not activate any blending effects when surrounding Ezio until he approaches the lost courtesan's perimeter and again enters the 'middle' of the group.
*Should one of the courtesans in a group fall into the water, the remaining three will continue to activate the blending effect without her, indicating that the death of one courtesan is similar to when two leave the group to distract passing guards.
*Courtesans cannot be killed or grabbed by Ezio. However, you can still hurt them with your weapons.
*The appearance of Courtesans has five randomly generated options: hair, face, dress color, necklace, and sleeves.
*In Monteriggioni, after renovating the Brothel, random Courtesans appear to walk in the streets. However, you are unable to hire them.
*Attracting attention after distracting guards with a group of Courtesans will cause the guards to attack the group and kill them.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, when Ezio reaches Level 5 in the Courtesans guild challenges, the courtesans are able to kill guards by blowing a presumably poisonous substance into their faces.
Desmond Miles (born 1987) is the main protagonist of the main installments in the Assassin's Creed series and the descendant of a long line of ancestors who swore their allegiance to the Assassin Order. He is initially forced to use a machine, called the Animus, created by Abstergo Industries – the modern front of the Knights Templar – to relive the memories of his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad during the Crusader era, in their quest to locate the "Apple", a Piece of Eden.

Eventually escaping with the aid of modern day Assassins, Desmond once again uses an Animus (now improved to the Animus 2.0) to explore the memories of another ancestor of his, Ezio Auditore, so as to learn the ways of the Assassins in a much faster way than normal.
Desmond Miles was born in an Assassin "hideout" in the desert known as "The Farm", an "off the grid" compound with a population of about thirty people, much like the city of Masyaf, where he was destined to be trained as an Assassin. He was frustrated by his parents' explicit instructions not to leave the compound, and believed them to be overly concerned and paranoid. On his 16th birthday, he finally fled, "wanting to see the rest of the world." He later told Lucy Stillman that he had no regrets over leaving his parents, because as far as he was concerned, they were little more than his "wardens", and to him the Farm was his "prison". After leaving the Assassin compound, he went into hiding for nine years. While keeping a low profile, he eventually became a bartender. Aware of the Knights Templar, and wanting to avoid both them and the Assassins, Desmond never used his real name and used only cash to purchase items. However, he was eventually found, traced through a fingerprint needed for a motorcycle license, and was brought to the Abstergo laboratory.
Kidnapped by Abstergo
I'm not an Assassin... not any more.

In September 2012, Desmond Miles was kidnapped by Abstergo Industries, a pharmaceutical company and front for the Knights Templar, for use as a test subject in the Animus, a device that can read the memories of Desmond's ancestors through the "genetic memory" left behind in their descendants' DNA. At first, Warren Vidic attempted to pry the information he wanted from Desmond's mind, but was met with failure. Whilst Desmond claimed to be nothing more than a bartender, Vidic revealed that they knew of his history as an Assassin, forcing Desmond to finally admit his past life. Vidic and Lucy Stillman told Desmond that they were trying to access a certain memory, but Desmond's subconscious was resisting their efforts. Vidic warned Desmond that if he refused to assist them, they would induce a coma, continue their work, and when done with Desmond, leave him to die. Without much choice, Desmond agreed to help them.

Desmond was made to explore the genetic memories of his ancestor Altaïr – a member of a clan of Assassins active during and after the Crusades, specifically Altaïr's experiences during the year 1191 – and does so over several days under the watchful eye of Vidic. During the nights however, Desmond discovered that he was able to explore the lab he was being held in, accessing the Animus computer and, after stealing Warren Vidic's pen, gaining access to his personal computer. Through e-mails, Desmond learned of the previous Animus subject, Subject 16, who had suffered from a "bleeding effect" due to prolonged exposure to the Animus, as well as tidbits of information from the outside world. Eventually, with the aid of Lucy, the Assassins learned of Desmond's capture and attempted to liberate him, with the gunfire of their assault being heard through an intercom device, although the rescue attempt failed. Vidic boasts that those Assassins were in fact the last of the group he escaped from at 16; their desert hideout having been previously destroyed. Lucy's actions, however, suggested otherwise, and when Desmond asked if Lucy knew anything about his parents, she responded by saying that she didn't know, but that they "probably escaped." During this discussion, Lucy revealed herself to be an undercover member of the Assassins. Desmond eventually achieved Vidic's goal and discovered the location of numerous Pieces of Eden. Executives of Abstergo Industries then ordered his execution, but his life was saved by Lucy's intervention, who asked to keep Desmond alive in order to re-access his memories if need be. After the executives leave, Desmond suddenly accesses the "eagle vision" of his ancestor Altaïr, seeing Vidic and Lucy for their true allegiances, as well as countless scrawled messages and puzzles on the floor of the main laboratory.

Escape to the Hideout
Wait! Why aren't I following Altaïr? Oh, shit...
At the beginning of Assassin's Creed II, Desmond was still being held within the laboratory at Abstergo, continuing directly a couple hours after the last game. Lucy suddenly arrives, covered in blood and demanding Desmond to get into the Animus before Abstergo discovers what she'd done. Desmond, rather confused, agrees and manages to sync with the closest genetic match between himself and Subject 16 recorded in the Animus’ memory core. Inside the Animus, he experiences the birth of another of his ancestors, Ezio Auditore. He instantly gets pulled out though, and both make their escape.

They were quickly spotted by Abstergo security and after Lucy locked a door to keep the security guards from getting to them, they turned the corner and were forced into an engagement with two more which Lucy quickly ended, allowing them to continue on stealthily. The two soon entered a glass elevator that led down to a large open room filled with office blocks that housed a large number of Animi. Following Lucy through the maze-like walkways between the Animi to avoid the guards patrolling the room they stealthily made their way through to the back, although Desmond's questions about the Animi are met with silence and Lucy telling him to "shut the fuck up...please." Upon reaching the keycode locked door of another elevator, Lucy tried to enter a code but failed, to which Desmond instinctively called upon his recently activated Eagle Vision to see the code and after successfully entering it. Lucy questions Desmond about how he knew what code to enter, which he could not give a proper answer, showing his obliviousness to the Bleeding Effect as they safely entered the elevator and rode it down. Once in the car park underneath the building, the two were halted by yet more of Abstergo's guards, but were able to overcome them and escape.

Arriving at one of the Assassins' hideout's, Desmond was introduced to two more Assassins – Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane – who have worked with Lucy over the years. Lucy told Desmond that they wanted him to become trained in the ways of the Assassin – thanks to the bleeding effect, they could achieve this in a matter of days – although it required him learning the ways of an Assassin through the ancestor that Desmond had synched with Subject 16 to find in Abstergo's Animus, Ezio Auditore. Desmond agrees to help almost immediately, which surprised Lucy, and was quickly plugged in the Animus 2.0.

After learning the ways of the Assassin through Ezio's memories, Desmond was retracted from the Animus, partly to test his retention of the memories, but also to prevent the mental degradation that Subject 16 had suffered from being in the Animus for an extended period of time.

Tasking him with initiating security protocols around the Assassin hideout, Lucy left it to Desmond to work out how to reach them through the use of his Eagle Vision and new-found Free Running skills. Just as he began, however, he started suffering vivid hallucinations of the Crusader era and the Italian Renaissance. At first the visions were short, and were nothing to worry about, but after completing the task, Desmond was incapacitated as the visions became more real.

Taken back to Acre by the bleeding effect, Desmond once again followed the memories of Altaïr, this time without the use of the Animus, and discovered Altaïr and Maria Thorpe conceived a child, Desmond's next ancestor after Altaïr.

The next day, Desmond had recovered from the experiences and returned to the Animus, neglecting to tell the Assassins what had happened. He continued to watch the genetic memories of Ezio Auditore, despite at one time being thrown out by "corrupted memory sequences". Eventually, they learn that Ezio's arch-nemesis, the Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Rodrigo Borgia had, in 1492, become Pope Alexander VI, so as to gain access to yet another Piece of Eden, the Papal Staff, as well as to access the Vault. As Ezio's story began to conclude, Desmond and the Assassins watched deep within the Vault beneath the Vatican. Ezio found himself confronted by a "god" hologram who called herself Minerva; Minerva warns the Assassins of the end of the world, as well as retelling the story of the war between "Those Who Came Before," and their human subjects. The Assassins are shocked when Minerva addresses Desmond by name, confusing even Ezio, and it is revealed that Minerva was in fact talking to Desmond through Ezio. Mere moments after, Desmond was quickly pulled out of the Animus, and upon seeing the three rushing to collect their belongings, realized that the Templars had found their location.

Immediately after getting out of the Animus, Lucy tossed Desmond a Hidden Blade with the Assassin's emblem on it, and asks for his assistance in covering the escape. Making their way into the warehouse, Vidic appeared, flanked by Abstergo security officials with the intent of reclaiming Desmond. The two Assassins killed the Templars that assaulted them, with Desmond – now fully synchronized with Ezio – masterfully using his Hidden Blade to kill many of the guards himself. With his entourage eliminated, Vidic was left to confront Desmond on his own, but instead retreats, promising that their victory is only temporary. The four Assassins then fled north, and Desmond is hooked up to the Animus inside the van and told to continue to search through his memories for anything useful. Meanwhile, the other Assassins begin to discuss the nature of Minerva and her talk.

Monteriggioni
After the Abstergo attack at the end of Assassin's Creed II, the modern day Assassins traveled to Monteriggioni in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood to set up their new base. The Templars were actively searching for them and were analyzing the environment using cell phone towers, so they had to set up underground, in the Sanctuary under the Villa Auditore. Whilst searching the grounds of the Villa Auditore for a way into the Sanctuary, Desmond – through the bleeding effect – saw a vision of Ezio in the past, who led him to a high, narrow ledge and leaped off. Desmond immediately followed suit, performing his first-ever Leap of Faith into a pile of hay. Desmond and Lucy made their way to the Sanctuary underground via a tunnel used by Ezio and the villagers of Monteriggioni to escape after the attack. As they passed through the tunnels, Desmond saw more visions of Ezio and the villagers escaping, which worried him, making him wonder what would happen "if (he) can't stop the visions – how long until (he) started painting symbols on the walls." Lucy scolded him, telling him not to make light of his condition, and reminded him that Subject 16 was dead, and that he needed to focus. Desmond and Lucy used glow sticks to see in the tunnel, due to the lack of power. By this time, Desmond wore a Hidden Blade with three straps attaching it to his arm, although he wore no bracer with it.

When the two reached the Sanctuary, Desmond saw another vision of Ezio, who seemed to have visited it in his old age. Before he opened the door to Mario's office, Desmond noticed the numbers 1419, 1420, and 1421 written on the walls, which he pointed out to the other Assassins. Shaun theorized the numbers to refer to dates, however he admitted that he needed to do further research. After the team set up underground, Desmond became in charge of bringing electricity into the Sanctuary by inserting a device of Rebecca's construction into four electrical power boxes, that would allow them to accumulate small amounts of power from each source. After that, he continued with his regular Animus sessions.

After finishing in the Animus, Desmond and the others learned that the Apple of Eden was hidden under the Colosseum. Upon traveling to Rome, the group separated as Desmond then tried to find a way for the others to get inside the Colosseum without needing to climb. Once they met up again, Desmond activated an elevator that took all of them down to the Apple's chamber. However, as he takes the Apple of Eden from its pedestal, Juno's voice is heard, saying that Desmond's DNA had activated the Apple. Juno then took control of Desmond's body, and forced him to stab Lucy in the abdomen with his hidden blade.

As Desmond starts to go into shock, he is returned into the Animus by two unknown men of affiliation whose voices can merely be heard.

Characteristics and personality
Desmond has an uncanny resemblance to both Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze, being the descendant of the two. Although they have very little in common about their personalities. Being a discreet individual, he does not wear extravagant clothing, and is accustomed to a white hooded jacket, jeans, and black sneakers. Interestingly, if raised, the hood exhibits a beak-like feature similar to Ezio's and Altaïr's.

In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, his attire differs drastically. He now wears a white hooded jacket with a red collar (though it no longer has an eagle beak-like hood), with a black shirt sporting an image of an eagle underneath. His sleeves are rolled up to reveal a black, tribal tattoo where the Hidden Blade should be. He is also equipped with a sling backpack, and a hidden blade without a bracer.

Desmond was a gruff and cynical individual, who held a serious outlook on life. This was mainly due to him being aware of the Templars and Assassins since his youth, although he was initially unaware of Abstergo Industries being a Templar company. Despite this, he was not above jesting about his situation, and would occasionally make jokes, although they rarely elicited a good reaction. After his emancipation from Abstergo, Desmond's demeanor became considerably more relaxed, and he spent a noticeable amount of time conversing with Lucy. After experiencing the Bleeding Effect, he is more doubtful of his sanity, as with what happened to Subject 16.

Equipment and skills
Being that Desmond was trained during childhood as an Assassin, he was proficient in basic reconnaissance skills, such as eavesdropping and pickpocketing, and was also a competent fist fighter. After about a week of being forced to relive the memories of his ancestor, Altaïr, Desmond began to experience the bleeding effect, and developed an extra-sensory ability called Eagle Vision. Later on, after willingly exploring the memories of his other ancestor, Ezio, Desmond learned how to free-run and use weapons. Not long afterwards, he was able to easily fend off a Templar attack with Ezio's combat skills.

Since synchronizing with Ezio, Desmond has been able to use all of the skills and abilities his ancestors could, both within the Animus and in real life.

Trivia
*He is modeled after Francisco Randez and voiced by Nolan North. Curiously, Randez also used to be a bartender before he became a model. This may have inspired the makers of the game to give Desmond the same profession.
*Desmond possesses the same scar on his lip as his ancestors Altaïr and Ezio had, though it is unknown how he obtained it.
*Desmond and Altaïr share the same age during the first game, both being 25 years of age in 2012 and 1191 respectively.
*Desmond is a descendant of Those Who Came Before and Humans. Proof of this is his Eagle Vision, product of the unification of those two races, which also led to the birth of the first "Assassins", Adam and Eve.
*Desmond has an A+ blood type.
*Desmond's history shows that he never wanted to be an Assassin, nor does he have the skills yet before the second game to be one. However in the graphic novel, included with the limited edition of Assassin's Creed, he does call himself an Assassin, and shows skills of stealth and lethality.
*Desmond acquires a Hidden Blade at the conclusion of Assassin's Creed II. The original owner of the blade is uncertain, but its bracer is identical to the one Ezio Auditore inherited from his father, Giovanni Auditore.
*The etymology of Desmond's name "the world" (or "man of the world" in Celtic and Latin) is not related to either of his ancestors, whereas Altaïr's and Ezio's names pertain to avians; Altaïr's being "the flying one" and Ezio's "eagle." His surname "Miles" is also the Latin word for "soldier." The name suits him, however, as he wanted to leave his parents' watchful eyes to see the rest of the world outside the compound, and refers to his role in saving the world from destruction.
*Should the player achieve full synchronization in sequence 8 of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Desmond will appear as a playable skin in the Animus. The Animus states that the Desmond body was uploaded from the Animus memory banks.
*Interacting with the statue of Altaïr in the Sanctuary at any point in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood will trigger Desmond to say "Hey, wassa-matta-you, Altaïr?", followed by Rebecca reprimanding him for being racist.
*In early images of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Desmond is seen with a beard identical to Ezio's. It is unknown why the beard was present then, and later removed.
*Despite being equipped with a hidden blade throughout Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Desmond only uses it twice; the first in the Auditore Family Crypt, to lower a platform for Lucy, and in the Santa Maria Aracoeli Vault, to stab Lucy.

Eventually escaping with the aid of modern day Assassins, Desmond once again uses an Animus (now improved to the Animus 2.0) to explore the memories of his second ancestor, Ezio Auditore, so as to learn the ways of the Assassins in a much faster way than normal.

Biography
Early life
Desmond Miles was born in an Assassin "hideout" in the desert known as "The Farm", an "off the grid" compound with a population of about thirty people, much like the city of Masyaf, where he was destined to be trained as an Assassin.

I'm not an assassin… not any more.

Lucy's actions, however, suggested otherwise, and when Desmond asked if Lucy knew anything about his parents, she responded by saying that she didn't know, but that they probably escaped. During this discussion, Lucy revealed herself to be an undercover member of the Assassins. Desmond eventually achieved Vidic's goal and discovered the location of numerous Pieces of Eden. Executives of Abstergo Industries ordered his execution, but his life was saved by Lucy's intervention, who asked to keep Desmond alive in order to re-access his memories if need be.

The Templars were actively searching for them and were analyzing the environment using cell phone towers, so they had to set up underground under the Villa Auditore. Whilst searching the grounds of the Villa Auditore for a way into the Sanctuary, Desmond – through the bleeding effect – saw a vision of the past of Ezio, who led him to a high, narrow ledge and leaped off. Desmond immediately followed suit, performing his first-ever Leap of Faith into a bale of hay. Desmond and Lucy made their way to the Sanctuary underground via a tunnel used by Ezio and the villagers of Monteriggioni to escape after the attack. Through the bleeding effect, Desmond saw Ezio and the villagers escape, which worried him, making him wonder what would happen "if (he) can't stop the visions – how long until (he) started painting symbols on the walls". Lucy scolded him, telling him not to make light of his condition, and reminded him that Subject 16 was dead, and that he needed to focus. Desmond and Lucy used glow sticks to see in the tunnel, due to the lack of power. By this time, Desmond was wearing a Hidden Blade with three straps attaching it to his arm, although he wore no bracer with it.

When he reached the Sanctuary, he saw another vision of Ezio, who seemed to have visited it in his old age. Before he opened the door to Mario's office, Desmond noticed the numbers 1419, 1420, and 1421 written on the walls which he pointed out to the other assassins. After the team set up underground, he became in charge of bringing electricity into the Sanctuary by inserting something into four electrical power boxes. After that, he continued with his regular Animus sessions.

After finishing up in the Animus, Desmond and the others learn that the Apple of Eden is hidden under the Colosseum. Desmond then tries to find a way for the others to get inside. Once they meet up again, Desmond activates an elevator that takes them down to the Apple's chamber. He then takes the Apple of Eden from its pedestal, however as soon as he touches it, Juno's voice is heard, saying that Desmond's DNA has activated the Apple. Juno then takes control of Desmond's body, and forces him to stab Lucy Stillman with the hidden blade, because Juno needed a sacrifice to be awakened (though this may be speculation, as it is not confirmed as to whether Lucy is or isn't dead). After Desmond passes out, he gets put back into the Animus by two unknown men who are presumed to be Assassins due to their understanding of Desmond's current condition.

Characteristics and personality
Desmond has an uncanny resemblance to both Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze, despite having very little in common with their personalities. And being a discreet individual, he does not wear extravagant clothing, accustomed to a white hooded jacket, jeans, and black sneakers. Interestingly, if raised, the hood exhibits a beak-like feature similar to Ezio's and Altaïr's. In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, his attire differs, now having a backpack, no eagle beak on hood, black converses, white hooded jacket with a red collar, similar to Ezio, with a black shirt sporting an image of an eagle underneath. His sleeves are rolled up to reveal a tattoo where the Hidden Blade should be.

Desmond was a gruff and cynical individual, who held a serious outlook on life, due to being aware of the Templars and Assassins since his youth, although he was initially unaware of Abstergo Industries being a Templar company.

Later on, after willingly exploring the memories of another ancestor, Ezio Auditore, Desmond learned how to free-run and use weapons. Not long afterwards, he was able to easily fend off a Templar attack with Ezio's combat skills.

Since synchronizing with Ezio, Desmond has been able to use all of the skills and abilities his ancestor could, both within the Animus and in real life.
However in the graphic novel, included with the limited edition of Assassin's Creed, he does call himself an Assassin and shows skills of stealth and lethality.
*Desmond acquires a Hidden Blade at the conclusion of Assassin's Creed II. The original owner of the blade is uncertain, but it is identical the one Ezio Auditore inherited from his father, Giovanni Auditore. By Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood however, he seems to have gotten rid of the bracer, and kept the blade.
*The etymology of Desmond's name "the world" (or "man of the world" in Celtic and Latin) is not related to either of his ancestors, whereas Altaïr's and Ezio's names pertain to avians; Altaïr's being "the flying one" and Ezio's "eagle". His surname "Miles" is also the Latin word for "soldier". The name however suits him, as he wanted to leave his parents' watchful eyes to see the rest of the world outside the compound, and refers to his role in saving it from destruction.
*Desmonds appearance changes significantly in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood – The design of his hoodie has changed – most noticeably, the hood itself now appears larger, there is a closed zipper down the top of the hood, and the inside lining is red, similar to Ezio's Master Assassin Robes. The zipper down the front is partly undone, revealing a gray shirt with what appears to be an eagle design. His sleeves are rolled up, revealing a black band on his right wrist, and tattoos on his left forearm which are obscured by his hidden blade. He now wears a courier bag, as well as the same hidden blade from Assassin's Creed II, however the hidden blade is now without a bracer.
*At the end of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Juno states that Desmond was "birthed from our loins and the loins of our enemies", hinting that the Assassins are indeed the result of interbreeding between humans and Those Who Came Before.

Abstergo Industries is one of the largest multinational corporations in the world by the year 2012, serving as a front for the Templar Order. They are the employers of Dr. Warren Vidic and Lucy Stillman, the captors of Desmond, and the company that funds the Animus.

Even though Abstergo is outwardly labeled as a company working in the field of Medicine and Science, Dr. Vidic boasts of their accomplishments in fields beyond these; going so far as to claim their involvement in every huge progressive movement within last millennium. He claims that either Abstergo or its predecessors were responsible for every scientific accomplishment for the last 1,000 years, though Abstergo chooses who gets credit for the accomplishments very carefully. However, these achievements are not purely of their doing, as when Desmond asks who created the Animus' technology, Dr. Vidic mysteriously replies with "Those Who Came Before."

Desmond discovers Abstergo's identity as the modern-day embodiment of the Knights Templar while being held at their laboratory. He does so after reading several e-mails, particularly one viewable in the conference room, wherein Alan Rikkin writes to Vidic: "May the Father of Understanding guide you to success," a phrase long used by the Templar Order.

Abstergo has also been hunting the last of the Assassins left in the world, hoping to end their enemies' way of life, thus eliminating any chance of their own failure. Vidic's e-mail reveals Abstergo and Assassin presence in many events throughout history, such as the Tunguska event. The emails also discuss the Philadelphia Incident, in which the USS Eldridge (which was stationed in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard) was allegedly rendered invisible for several seconds, and sent forward in time. Experiments with the artifact related to this incident were halted, with Abstergo citing concern about paradoxes.

Mitchell-Hedge's communicators are also mentioned, along with an abstract reference to the 13 Incan Crystal Skulls that were supposedly discovered by the gentleman adventurer of the same name in the 1920's. New Age theorists state that the Crystal Skulls enable telepathy between their wielders, and therefore, the term "communicators" implies that Abstergo either has these skulls or is able to communicate using them. This communication is likely also undetectable by any modern-day Assassin.

Through the e-mails, we learn that Abstergo is being investigated for something called "New Fluoride," which they tested on an isolated community, were caught, and are currently being held in suspicion because of it. This is the reason behind the December 21, 2012 launch of their Eye-Abstergo communications satellite, as afterwards, they risk being immobilized by having their assets frozen. The 12/21/2012 launch is also significant, as it marks the end of the Mayan Long Count, 12th baktun cycle - the date set by many to be the end of the world.

Abstergo was also involved in an accident under the Denver International Airport, at Abstergo's satellite manufacturing (and possibly launch) facility. E-mails show that a member of the project apparently went insane, using the Apple present to kill almost everyone at the facility, ultimately destroying himself and the Piece. This loss caused Abstergo to capture Desmond Miles, in order to search for a replacement Piece.

Products
Vidic mentions that Abstergo invents everything to enhance everyday life, and it is also stated by Lucy that they produce anti-depressants. Henry Ford and Thomas Edison were past Abstergo employees, making Abstergo responsible for popularizing the assembly line and electricity. During World War II, the Atomic Bomb's creation was directly linked to Abstergo, with "O" (J. Robert Oppenheimer) being given the go ahead by an unnamed Abstergo employee.

Known employees
Current employees
*Alan Rikkin – C.E.O. at Abstergo.
*Warren Vidic – Head of Research for genetic memory and the Animus project.
*Nancy Nilop – Unknown position, possibly Leila's (former) boss.
*Jane Birkam – Unknown position, friend of Warren Vidic.
*Audrey Jacobs – Alan Rikkin's assistant.
*Richard – One of the three men that threatened to kill Lucy Stillman, before being stopped by Vidic.

Former employees
*Lucy Stillman
*Leila Marino (deceased)

Trivia
*Abstergo is also a Latin verb, meaning "I cleanse."
*In the Truth file regarding Apollo, scanning the symbol on the shuttle shows the Abstergo logo, suggesting that Abstergo Industries was behind the moon landings. Similarly, scanning the American flag planted on the moon reveals the Templar cross.
*During Ezio's visit to the Vault, the Abstergo logo can be seen on several images projected by Minerva.
*In the concept art for The Vault, what looks like the Abstergo logo can be seen on the floor of the circular room in which Ezio fights Rodrigo.
*Abstergo's Animi room has a wall with a large window in the shape of the Templar cross.
*The doors within the laboratory are marked with blue lights in the shape of the Templar cross.
*In Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy, the player is an Abstergo employee. However, the player does not seem to be aware of the company's association with the Templar Order or their war against the Assassins. However, it is implied that the player is descended from Assassins, thus their motives for secrecy might not be so mysterious.
*Abstergo has a Twitter page for Project Legacy .
*The Multiplayer mode of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is played from the point of view of Abstergo employees undergoing training in the Animi.
*It is implied that Abstergo is somewhere in Europe, as Lucy and Desmond were able to escape to the first hideout by car, and Lucy, Desmond, Shaun, and Rebecca were also able to arrive at the Monteriggioni Villa by the same method of transportation in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
*Abstergo has many technologies not known to the masses, one example of which is "Cell Phone Surveillence" refrenced in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. When Desmond is told about it, he claims to have no prior knowledge of it.
*One of Abstergo's former subjects, Subject 15, was pregnant, as stated by Lucy in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood.
*It is unknown how many Assassins were spying on Abstergo and the Templars or if Lucy was the only one due to her recieving a email from Abstergo in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
Desmond, shut the fuck up...please.
Lucy Stillman (born 1988) is a member of the Assassin Order and former genetic memory researcher, working for Abstergo Industries on the Animus project. During her time at Abstergo, she spied on the company and helped Desmond Miles escape the Abstergo Laboratory. She then aided in Desmond's training to be an Assassin, alongside Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane.

Biography
Early life
Before starting work with Abstergo Industries, Lucy Stillman attended a university to study cognitive neuroscience, but was forced to leave when her mentors began to hold issue with her topic of study (considered pseudoscience). Forced out of the university, she applied at a variety of locations and tried close to everything to achieve employment, at one point joking to Desmond, "I was this close to waiting tables."

Eventually, she was contacted by Dr. Warren Vidic, offering her a position at Abstergo Industries. She accepted the offer, and began working with Dr. Vidic on his Animus project immediately. For the first three years, Lucy was largely responsible for the design of a number of the Animus's functions and interfaces. While Lucy was on fairly cordial and friendly terms with a few other employees at Abstergo, such as Richard, these same individuals were later ordered to have Lucy killed, before Vidic intervened, seeing her as a valuable employee.

Working for Abstergo
Lucy was first seen after she pulled Desmond out of the Animus, seeing that his subconscious would not let him view the specific memory that Abstergo wanted. As Warren explained to Desmond what the Animus does and what genetic memories are, she explained Abstergo's goal without revealing too much information to Desmond.

In between sessions, Lucy asked Desmond questions concerning his past, or answered Desmond's questions with what little she could reveal about Abstergo's goals. Lucy also mentions that he was not the only person Abstergo was detaining, and that she too was an unfortunate captive. She then told him a story of how, in the past, Abstergo had decided to silence her, to keep her from speaking about the Animus; but before her assailants could commit her murder, they were ordered to stand down by Dr. Warren Vidic. She claimed that he had saved her life that day, and she told Desmond not to judge Dr. Vidic so harshly, as he was under a lot of pressure.

As more time passed on, Lucy leaves the access codes behind in Desmond's wardrobe, so that he could finally leave his room. On top of the Animus, Desmond found Lucy's pen, which was also left there for him to find. This gave him access to her computer, in order to read her e-mails. Later, Lucy revealed to Desmond that she to is also an Assassin and was only undercover to learn more about Abstergo's plans.

When Desmond finished his time in the Animus, reliving the memories of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, three Abstergo CEO's, along with Warren, decided to kill Desmond, seeing as they had already retrieved the information they needed. Lucy intervened, and convinced them to keep Desmond for more testing, as his memories could still reveal more about the locations of the Pieces of Eden. In turn, she had to leave him behind in the lab.

Escape to the Hideout
A few hours after Lucy and Vidic left, Desmond was still trapped in the lab after he had first used his new skill, Eagle Vision. Suddenly, Lucy rushed inside with blood splatters on her shirt from fighting her way through the Abstergo facility. Lucy told Desmond that there was no time to waste, and that he had to get into the Animus to retrieve the memory core data. Lucy wrote the data on a disk and decided it was time to flee. The two successfully fought their way down the facility, and made it to the parking lot. There, they found themselves confronted by guards. Quickly disposing of them, Lucy told Desmond to go into the trunk of a car "for [his] own protection". When the ride was over, the pair arrived in the Hideout. Before entering the main room, Lucy told Desmond that she had brought him to the Hideout to train to be an Assassin, by using the Animus 2.0 and its bleeding effect to imprint skills through Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Entering the Animus 2.0 room, Lucy's fellow Assassins, Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane, introduced themselves to Desmond, and set preparations for the sessions. Later in the day, Lucy evaluated Desmond's progress in between the sessions. The night after, Lucy and Desmond talked once more, where Desmond promised that he would protect her.

After Desmond made his new discovery through Ezio from the the Vault in Rome, the alarm went off as Abstergo invaded their hideout. In a rush, Lucy gave Desmond a Hidden Blade similar to Ezio's, and made her way downstairs. When Lucy encountered Warren Vidic again in the warehouse, he reminded her that he had saved her, which was why she came to work for Abstergo in the first place. Vidic burst out in anger as he stated his disappointment in her for her "betrayal". Both Lucy and Desmond engaged in a fight with the Abstergo guards, and managed to defeat them. Vidic was last seen in the back of a truck, stating that the attack was only the beginning, and fled. When Desmond started to go after him, Lucy stoped him and said that they will bring Vidic to justice for what he has done eventually. Lucy and the others evacuated the hideout, despite having defeated the guards from Abstergo, as their location had been revealed, and Abstergo would most likely be back with reinforcements. They left to hide out in the mountains, while Desmond was preparing to enter the Animus again to continue their search for clues. Meanwhile, Lucy continued to study the session notes to try to figure out what the "Goddess" Minerva meant and also told Desmond that everything she feared is starting to happen.

After a long drive, the Assassins finally arrived in Monteriggioni, setting up a new hideout in the Sanctuary underneath the Villa Auditore. She and Desmond access the sanctuary together via underground sewers and tunnels.

After reliving Ezio's last memories in the Animus, the Assassins discover that the Apple of Eden was hidden by Ezio in a vault underneath Santa Maria Aracoeli. After retrieving the Apple, Juno takes contol of Desmond's body saying "The path must be opened. The scales must be balanced.". Juno then proceeds to force Desmond to kill Lucy. It is unknown at this time wheither Lucy will survive, however, when she and Desmond passed out the Apple fell in-between them, with Desmond unconcious the player is returned to play as Ezio in "free roam".

Personality
In contrast with Warren Vidic's personality, Lucy is a warm and patient woman with a bright personality. She always lends encouraging words and sympathy towards Desmond Miles, though it obviously irritates him sometimes. At times, when Warren Vidic attempts to force Desmond to go deeper to the Animus memory, Lucy will stop him from going and plead with Vidic to allow Desmond to rest, showing her caring personality.

During Assassin's Creed II, it is shown that she is cunning and resourceful for keeping Desmond's night-time explorations of the Animus room secret, but becomes irate or worried under too much pressure. She becomes sensitive to the death of her collegues like her friend Leila Marino, her role to Subject 16's loss of sanity, and the stress over the death of two more (eight Assassins) teams in the field.

Trivia
* She is modeled after and voiced by Kristen Bell.
* The achievement of "Conversationalist" can be unlocked in the 360 version of the first game by talking to Lucy every time Desmond comes out of the Animus. Note that you must talk to her completely, until she says that she's too busy to talk, or asks if he's tired.
* Lucy's character model is drastically altered between games. In the first Assassin's Creed, she is dressed in appropriate business/work attire. In Assassin's Creed II, her clothes are much more casual, and she has a slightly more curvaceous figure, and different facial structure: larger eyes and lipstick. Lucy's eyes also go from blue-grey to completely blue. In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, she wears a brown jacket over her clothes from Assassin's Creed II.
* In Assassin's Creed II, it is revealed that she is a very successful fighter, taking down many Abstergo guards while she and Desmond were escaping the Hideout and in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood she is seen to have a simalar level of free-running abilities like Desmond and his ancestors.
*It's implied throughout Assassin's Creed II that Lucy and Desmond have feelings for each other. There is evidence of this by her caring for his well-being due to the Bleeding Effect, as well as hugging him and saying that she's glad he's with the Assassins before Desmond's training. It is also implied through Desmond by example of him trying to be humorous around her and always asking how she is and trying to make her feel better about Subject 16, saying that its not her fault about what happened to him. Desmond has also said that he would protect her, further implying feelings between them.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, she seems to have a scene from Project Legacy on her computer in the Sanctuary.
*Lucy's e-mail password in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is "Juno57". This is extremely ironic and foreshadowing as Juno is the one who controls Desmond to apparantly kill Lucy herself.
*With the traveling in the tunnels of the Sanctuary, it is revealed that Lucy has a fear of bats.

The iconic weapon of the Assassin's Creed series, the Hidden Blade is used both for stealth assassinations and for regular combat.

Assassin's Creed
Although Altaïr already has this weapon at the start of the game, he loses it when he is demoted to Novice. At his first promotion to rank 2, however, he earns it back (along with his sword) so that he may perform his first assassination on Tamir, the black marketeer, in Damascus.

Basic usage
thumb|300px|right|Video tutorial on usage of the Hidden Blade.
This weapon is mostly used for stealthy, low profile assassinations upon soldiers. An unaware soldier may be assassinated without drawing too much attention, with stealth assassinations being possible from both behind and in front of the target. Altaïr rams the blade into the victim's abdomen (front) or through his spine (back). When stealth is not a priority, Altaïr may perform a high profile assassination. This involves Sprinting towards the target at hand, jumping and thrusting the blade into the victims throat, or major arteries in the neck. Also, Altair will perform another assassination by pushing the target onto his knees and stabbing him in the neck when approached from behind.

The Hidden Blade is the only weapon that Altaïr may wield while sprinting. When Altaïr is close enough to the victim during a foot pursuit, the button on the weapon hand button on the HUD will change to "assassinate", which can be pressed to carry out the assassination. Altaïr will perform a running leap, landing on his victim from behind and burying the blade in the neck. This feature makes it an ideal choice for running down targets who flee such as Talal, the slave trader, in Jerusalem.

Both low and high profile assassinations may fail. A guard wary of your actions may catch your arm when you attempt the kill and throw you back. Attacks from behind and attacks made upon guards who are prone on the ground will never fail, no matter the circumstances. Be aware, of course, that you will lose one third of your synchronization if you assassinate innocent civilians with the Hidden Blade, just as with any other weapon. However once you complete the game and replay a memory block, you will not lose synchronization if you kill innocent civilians.

Air Assassination
In a 2007 demo of the William V of Montferrat mission, Jade Raymond introduced a move called air to assassinate that combines some of Altaïr's acrobatic skills with his Hidden Blade. From higher ground above a target such as a nearby roof or beam, Altaïr leaps directly onto his victim and stabs him in the throat. Although the move was not covered in the manual or in-game tutorials, air to assassinate does exist within Assassin's Creed and the controls were documented by stabguy on The Hidden Blade website. All forms of air to assassinate draw attention of nearby guards, even when performed in low profile. Note that in Assassin's Creed II, Air to Assassinate was renamed Air Assassination and included as a required tutorial with simplified controls.

In combat
The Hidden Blade can also be used while in combat. An enemy who has been grabbed and thrown (or counter thrown with a grab break) can easily be killed while he lies on the ground. Using the Hidden Blade in combat against large groups is challenging, as Altaïr cannot block any attack. The time frame in which Altaïr can counter-attack is extremely small compared to the sword and the short blade, but successfully countering enables one of several different – and always lethal – counter-attacks in which Altaïr stabs his opponent in the chest, head, abdomen, base of the skull, or spine. It is also possible to assassinate the enemy in combat, while he is caught in a moment of inattention or grappling with a vigilante, or if he is taunting Altaïr (this is documented on The Hidden Blade as the "taunting penalty"), but any other time it will fail because the enemy will always block the attack. It is also possible to assassinate your targets even if they are aware of you by getting behind them and assassinating them.

Mechanism
In Assassin's Creed, Altaïr has the hidden blade on his left hand. The blade is integrated into the vambrace, and when not in use, sits retracted inside of the slide mechanism. Though not fully or officially understood, as to how the blade functions, there are a number of theories. One being that when Altaïr flicks his wrist, the blade is ejected with the combined force of Altaïr's arm and gravity. Altaïr is "unhinging" or "releasing" the blade which is kept locked in place. If the player holds down the weapon hand button, the blade stays ejected and Altaïr makes a fist around the blade, which rests in the spot where his amputated ring finger once was. Another popular theory is that a ring mechanism is used and that opening the hand ejects the blade, but this raises the question that why the blade does not activate every time he opens his hand, say when leaping for a ledge, and how he can hold the blade in his fist without it retracting. Another, more sensible theory is that it uses both mechanisms to operate the blade and that the blade wont eject or retract without both systems being used. One being the flicking of the wrist, and the ring mechanism. This explains why he flicks his wrist and opens his hand to eject the blade and why he can close his fist without the blade retracting and why he can flick his arm without fear of an unexpected stabbing.

The true mechanics behind the retraction of the blade yet remain a mystery. When the weapon hand button is released, Altaïr loosens his fist and opens his hand. At this point, the blade returns to the vambrace seemingly of its own accord. Some other theories on the blade's mechanics exist, with some maintaining that the blade works on a spring-retraction system, and with others stating that the blade is never truly locked when it is released, and therefore the blade will return if Altaïr is not holding it in place. Many fans of the game have attempted to construct their own hidden blade, with many posting videos of their blade on YouTube.

It is probable that it works on the same system as modern full automatic switchblade knives. There are two springs of equal strength present. The inertia from the pull/push of one spring is enough to overcome the resistance of the other spring for the blade to lock into place.

In the E3 teaser trailer of the game it is seen that Altair is pushing a button to operate his hidden blade but in the actual game no such button exists and he does not seem to push anything with his other hand.

Role in investigations and missions
Informant missions
The Hidden Blade is also used for some of the investigations given to you by informants. You are asked to stealthily assassinate a number of targets. If any guard even once confronts you, the mission is failed. If you attack the targets or the guards with fists, the short blade, the sword, or any other high profile weapon, you will fail the mission. Because of this, you may only use throwing knives and/or the Hidden Blade to assassinate your targets.

Interrogation missions
During Interrogation missions, after successfully interrogating the target, Altaïr is forced to kill them, so they cannot reveal his plans to the enemy. He will bury the blade in their stomach to kill them, then gently lower their body onto the ground so as not to draw further attention to himself.

Save Citizen missions
In the optional Save Citizen missions to save citizens from soldiers threatening to kill them, this weapon will come in handy. Successfully and stealthily used, you might take out three of the soldiers before they notice you, draw their weapons, and engage you in a swordfight. Also, the Save Citizen missions are commonly located in alleyways or dark corners, so it is possible to begin the mission by starting from an elevated position and performing an air-to-assassinate.

Assassinations
The hidden blade is used in every storyline assassination you perform. Even if you begin by attacking the enemy with a sword, you will always finish them off with the hidden blade before it cuts to the death cutscene.

Assassin's Creed II
In Assassin's Creed II, Ezio possesses two hidden blades, whereas Altaïr has only one. In addition, unlike Altaïr who had to sacrifice his ring finger, both of Ezio's ring fingers are intact due to a design that raised the base of the weapon itself, as outlined in the Codex.

This revised hidden blade had been designed by Altaïr (presumably through using the Apple of Eden) so that the Assassins, who he intended to go undercover, could not be identified by the lack of a ring finger. Furthermore, the mechanism did not require a wrist "flick" to extend the blade, thus the user could retract the blade without any wrist or hand movement, and as pictured the weapon could be used with a clenched fist (Giovanni has only been depicted as using a clenched fist, while Ezio would use the "traditional" open hand as did Altaïr). While there is a forward/downward-rotating wheel atop the rear portion of the mechanism's housing, its function has not been identified, and there are no known schematics or explanations for the mechanism. In Assassin's Creed: Lineage, there were no shots of it operating while explicitly being worn on the actor's arm without gimmicks (such as an open-ended rear housing through which the blade could be pushed or pulled), so it is probable that no actual working prop exists that operates as depicted.

Ezio's first blade would be inherited from his father, which, along with the corresponding Codex page, the Assassin's Robes and a common sword, had been in Giovanni's secret room after his arrest. The weapon had become inoperative ever since Giovanni had fought Borgia's men (in Assassin's Creed: Lineage), when a single sword strike against the blade had dislodged it from the bracer and mechanism, but Ezio brought it to his friend Leonardo da Vinci to repair it.

Later on, Ezio would acquire another Codex page which upon decryption by Leonardo detailed the construction of a hidden blade with a metal plate on the top side of the vambrace, allowing the wielder to safely deflect enemy attacks and thus to properly engage in armed conflict with the blades.

At the end of the game, Desmond receives from Lucy a similar model of the Hidden Blade (if not the same one) used by Ezio to face Vidic's henchmen, but the Poison Blade and Gun are seemingly absent and/or inoperable, possibly due to the fact that the hidden blade that is given still needs improvements from a skilled engineer such as Leonardo, or the fact that lead bullets or the certain alloy used to make the hollowed out blade isn't available anymore.

In combat
thumb|left|300px|Video Guide to the Hidden Blade.
In Assassin's Creed II, the use of the hidden blade in combat is more classical. It can be used like a regular weapon, and is capable of breaking an enemy's defense. It attacks fairly fast, becoming faster after the acquirement of the second blade, allowing Ezio to unleash a constant barrage of strikes, suppressing a foe's ability to attack or killing them before they can attack. While attacking with the hidden blade, enemies cannot counter-attack, unlike when you attack with swords, maces and smaller weapons. Unlike the first game, it is also possible to block attacks while using the Hidden Blade once he has the upgraded vambrace. The hidden blade also allows you to attack very quickly and gives you more freedom in movement rather than the other weapons. For example, Ezio can easily strafe a 180 degree arch in the time it takes for the enemy to attack. This is barely possible except from very close range range with the sword or dagger. It also allows Ezio to quickly flee from a battle without having to take the time to sheath his weapon.

Veterans of Assassin's Creed combat may want to challenge themselves by using the Hidden Blade(s) in combat. While the counter-kill timing window is very short (a fraction of a second), skillful timing will be rewarded nicely; except for against the Brutes' smashes which knock Ezio's weapon away (does not work against Hidden Blades) and Seekers' (sweep Ezio's feet) special attacks, a successfully timed counter will always kill the guard against which it is performed, even if the guard has high health and/or is a high-ranking soldier. In addition, Brutes are very vulnerable and easy to combo kill with the hidden blades. Even a 3 hit combo can be used to kill a brute: see 1:44 in the video to the left.

In addition, he can repeatedly hit his opponent in a wild fashion and eventually break through their defenses and slash their throat or stab them in the chest repeatedly, while sometimes it does a short cinematic, if you are in open combat or in an odd position like on a ledge then it just does it in normal view. It also does this sometimes for no reason, and may be a possible glitch.

Upgrades
The second Hidden Blade is acquired later and the main blade gets upgraded with the poison blade and the pistol installed. Also, both blades get vambraces allowing Ezio to block heavier attacks with the hidden blades. Ezio can buy poison for the blade from Doctors and ammunition for the pistol at Blacksmiths.

Techniques
Later on, Ezio can assassinate enemies below with an Air Assassination, a Double Air Assassination if the target is adjacent to another, by leaping from a platform onto the victim. This, however, is easily noticeable by guards and they will attack once they see you doing it. It is possible to assassinate two guards at the same time (at ground level) by standing between them and piercing both their throats.

At the same time Ezio learns the aforementioned techniques, he also learns how to assassinate enemies that are standing on ledges above him, as well as how to assassinate targets from a hiding spot (e.g. Hay, Wells and Benches).

There are also other techniques that aren't actually part of what Ezio learns, but rather what players use to kill guards. One example would be side-stepping around a guard right after he attacks and then doing a instant kill to their backs with the hidden blade. Also, one can may grab an enemy and strike or throw him so that he falls, and then run to his body to perform a instant kill using the hidden blade before he can get back to his feet. A flashier and possibly quicker alternative is to perform an Air Assassination while running up a nearby wall or other vertical surface (i.e. a pillar). This sort of Air Assassination may also be attempted against standing enemies, though the chance of success is low if the enemy is aware of Ezio's presence during Open Conflict.

Ezio can also perform special combo kill animations and counter kill animations with the dual hidden blades.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, 1499, at the beginning of the game, Ezio's hidden blade (or at least its bracer) can be seen on a table, while he is sleeping with Caterina Sforza.

However, in 1503, Ezio has two new Hidden Blades and bracers on each forearm, both of which match the other new parts of his robes. However, in some screenshots and pictures, Ezio has only one hidden blade instead of two because he lost one of them during the Siege of Monteriggioni, and during the game, he meets up with Leonardo again and asks him to rebuild a new second hidden blade(though this time he asks for money for the new one). A new upgrade is the poison darts which can be shot from the Pistol.

Ezio's apprentices are equipped with hidden blade, though they are only given one. The right to two hidden blades is only reserved for the most trusted of Assassins or the Assassins who have earned the rank of the Master Assassin.

The smuggler from the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood multiplayer also appears to sport a hidden blade, although it is inverted, with the blade extending from the top of the arm, rather than the bottom.

Desmond wields a hidden blade without a bracer in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, with only three straps to attach it to his arm.

Trivia
*On one of the Codex Pages it states that the blade has to be connected or linked with the user, thus explaining part of why Altaïr had his ring finger removed. Altaïr opens his hand and spreads his fingers whenever the blade is extended. Similarly, he never uses the blade with his hand clenched in a fist; all stabbing moves and assassinations are performed with an open hand. The only time the blade sits in the space left by the amputated finger is when the player extends the blade and holds it out (by holding the weapon hand button while out of combat). Holding the button will keep the blade extended, but it does not act as other weapons, it will not scare away civilians.
*In both games the trigger mechanism is not visible on Altaïr's or Ezio's hands, even when they aren't wearing gloves.
*Masyaf Guards in Assassin's Creed do sport a hidden blade, though they never use it, nor is their ring finger missing.
*Malik, from the first game, had the hidden blade before he lost his arm but did not have an amputated finger.
*The first recorded usage of the Hidden Blade by an Assassin was Darius, when he assassinated Xerxes of Persia. Moreover, his seal's symbol is the Hidden Blade. However, his ring finger is still intact and he wields it on his right hand.
*Patrice Desilets, the creative director of the game, stated that the addition of a second blade in Assassin's Creed II also had a lucid reason: it's Assassin's Creed II, so there are 2 blades.
*In the film Smokin' Aces, one of the assassins sport a weapon similar to the hidden blade. Also, in the movie G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Storm Shadow uses a weapon similar to the Hidden Blade, though it is limited by the fact it must be operated with both hands. In the new Mortal Kombat: Rebirth trailer Dr. Alan Zane, a.k.a. Baraka has similar forearm hidden blades. In Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny, the character Dampierre fights with two similar hidden blades, although much bigger in size.
*The Hidden Blade is the only weapon that has a counter attack that cannot be blocked by enemies, though the timing has to be more precise than with a counter with a sword or short blade.
*Ezio's second Hidden Blade on his right arm in Assassin's Creed II is black, compared to the original white one. The original design of the second hidden blade was displayed as a brown glove with a white hidden blade, but it is unknown why it was changed into a bracer with a blade like Ezio's primary Hidden blade and bracer..
*According to the Codex, the second Hidden Blades where made of the rare metal with wich Altaïr crafted his armor. Due to the rarity of the metal few blades where made, and given only to trusted Assassins.
* Ezio's second Hidden Blade is black, making it look like its made in Altaïr's secret metal. It is uncertain however how did Leonardo find that metal, since the way to make it was gone lost, and Ezio did not bring any ancient broken blade.
*The Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood multiplayer character, the Smuggler, has a Hidden Blade which extends from the top of her forearm, rather than under her wrist.
*In Assassin's Creed II, after Giovanni tells Ezio to grab everything in his secret chest behind a secret room, Ezio goes home and finds the Assassin robes and wears them. While Ezio puts on the robes, the scene where he is fixing something on his right arm, he is really putting on the brown glove which is displayed in the inventory menu, in the E3 demo, and in some pre-release pictures. Somehow, Ezio's glove is not displayed even though it is displayed that he has it in his inventory where it says "Fists". It is ironic how he obtains the glove when he receives his second hidden blade.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, when you are given the second hidden blade by Leonardo as a gift from his marked benches, it resembles the design for the second hidden blade from E3 trailer from Assassin's Creed II until you buy armor for it.
