The '''Initiation into the Assassin Order''' was a ceremonial tradition held within the [[Assassins|Assassin Order]]. It was a rite of passage when an Assassin [[Apprentices|apprentice]] became a full member of the Order, and vowed to commit their life to safeguarding the freedom of [[Humans|humanity]].

Although the full details of the initiation into the Order during the 12<sup>th</sup> century are unclear, the ceremony included the amputation of the ring finger, as a sign of commitment to [[the Creed]]. During the [[Renaissance]], the initiation was performed by the Grand Master of the Order, alongside several other Assassins. The ceremony came in three parts, the speaking of the Creed, the branding of the initiate's left ring finger, and a [[Leap of Faith]].<ref name="AC2" /><ref name="Brotherhood">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref>

First, the participants stood around a lit brazier, with one Assassin reciting the Creed, which was answered in turn by the initiate. The final words, the maxim of the Creed, were spoken by all present.<ref name="AC2" /><ref name="Brotherhood" />

Next, the initiate's left ring finger was branded with tongs that had been heated in the aforementioned brazier. It was found by the [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]] in the 16th century, when returning to [[Sofia Sartor]]'s shop after the events in [[Cappadocia]] to discover [[Yusuf Tazim|Yusuf]]'s corpse.

The dagger could also be obtained by completing the memory [[The Trickster, Part 1]].

===Early life===
Darim was born in [[Masyaf]] in 1195, where he was raised by his parents, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Maria Thorpe. His training in the ways off the Assassins started at an early age, and he would eventually become a fully trained Assassin and an expert [[crossbow]]man. <ref name="ACTSC">''[[Assassin's Creed: The Secret Crusade]]''</ref>

===Assassination of Genghis Khan===
By 1217, [[Genghis Khan]]'s Mongolian Empire, which was expanding rapidly from the east, was slowing the expansion of the Assassin Order. In addition to this, Altaïr believed that the Khan held a [[Piece of Eden]] known as [[Sword of Eden|The Sword]]. Believing they had to stop the Mongols, Darim and his parents immediately left Masyaf on a mission to assassinate Khan. His younger brother Sef remained in Masyaf to care for his wife and children. During their absence, Altaïr's right-hand man, [[Malik Al-Sayf]], was placed in charge of the Order until their return.<ref name="ACTSC"/>

In early 1227, the Assassins had reached Mongolia, where they met with one of the local Assassins, [[Qulan Gal]]. The Assasins formulated a plan to assassinate Khan, and Qulan Gal and Altaïr then infiltrated hiss camp. However, due to his aging, Altaïr had lost much of his stealth, and he was detected and severely injured by one of the guards. Qulan Gal managed to save his fellow Assassin, and helped him escape the camp. The Assassins were then forced to regroup and formulate a new plan.<ref name="ACTSC"/>

Realizing the threat to his life, Genghis Khan tried to flee on horseback. Qulan Gal, who had been expecting this, had devised a plan to eliminate him. The Mongolian Assassin proceeded to shoot down Khan's horse, while Darim subsequently shot Khan himself with his crossbow. After ten years, the group had accomplished what they set out to do, and Darim and his parents finally started their journey home.<ref name="ACTSC"/>

===Exiled from Masyaf===
Later that year, Darim and his parents returned to Masyaf only to be greeted by a former Assassin apprentice named [[Swami]], who informed them that their expected greeter, [[Rauf]], had died of fever during their absence, and that Malik had been arrested by the new leader of the Order, [[Abbas Sofian]] for unknown reasons. Swami then told Darim that his brother Sef had retreated with his family to [[Alamut]], at which point Altaïr urged him to retrieve his younger brother and return to Masyaf.<ref name="ACTSC"/>

Some time after arriving in Alamut, he met with his sister-in-law and nieces. Darim retrieved a letter from his father, revealing that his brother had been killed, and Darim hurried back to Masyaf. Meeting up with his father in Masyaf village, the two men fought off the attacking Assassins, while Darim was informed that his mother was killed during Altaïr's confrontation with Abbas.<ref name="ACR">''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations]]''</ref> Successfully escaping Masyaf, Darim and Altaïr left for exile in Alamut.<ref name="ACTSC"/>

Darim spent most of the next 20 years living with his father, sister-in-law and nieces, until eventually his sister-in-law took her daughters to live in [[Alexandria]]. Later, Darim himself was driven away from Alamut by his father's state of depression and his renewed obsession with the Apple. Darim departed to [[France]] and later [[England]] to warn of the advancing threat of the Mongol Empire.<ref name="ACTSC"/>

Eventually, he returned to Masyaf in 1247 following his father's return to power as leader of the Order. It is unknown whether his relations with his father were restored following this. Darim traveled to [[Constantinople]] to invite the [[Venice|Venetian]] explorers [[Niccolò Polo|Niccolò]] and [[Maffeo Polo]] in 1257 to temporarily reside in Masyaf.<ref name="ACTSC"/>

At the end of the same year, the Mongols attacked Masyaf. Darim was ordered by Altaïr to leave Masyaf before the Mongols reached the fortress, and to take Altaïr's remaining books from his library with him. Saying a final farewell to his father in front of the library gates, Darim realized that the library was in fact a vault, but his father did not reveal what it was supposed to contain. Leaving Masyaf, Darim left for Alexandria to rejoin his brother's widow and their children.<ref name="ACR"/>
