Desmond Miles can be considered to be the true protagonist in Assassin's Creed.

The story starts off with flashes of Altair in an odd cloudy room. After about five minutes, Desmond wakes up to find himself on top of a machine and two figures with lab coats near him. He has no recollection of getting to where he is now and is told that he is being held captive. When he questions why, the answer he receives is somewhat unbelievable.

The people in the lab coats are Dr. Lucy Stillman and Dr. Warren Vidic. They run the Animus project for Abstergo Industries. The Animus is a device used to extract genetic memory from an individual about their ancestors. According to Dr. Vidic, the memories of our past relatives are stored in our DNA.

Desmond is told that he has information that someone needs. While Desmond claims to be nothing more than a bartender, it is alluded to that he is an assassin, or at least was one at some point in the past. He seems to have the same age, weight, and height as Altair at the time that the Animus decodes. He also wears a white hooded-sweatshirt, similar to Altair's clothing. Moreover, his ancestors were assassins. There is a specific memory in the life of his ancestor Altair that the Doctors are trying to access, but Desmond's subconscious mind is blocking access to the memory and they need his help to access it. If he refuses to assist them, they threaten to retrieve the memory in a more forceful way that will kill Desmond.

Without much choice, Desmond agrees to help them.

It is later revealed if you talk to Lucy that Desmond was born on a "farm" much like Masyaf. Desmond was apparently supposed to be born and raised as an assassin. He tells that he was unable to leave this small community of twenty or so people. He later escapes by himself, claiming that he wanted to see the rest of the world. Desmond states that he has no regrets leaving his father or mother. At some time in his life, Desmond became a bartender. Desmond never used his real name before being taken. He used cash only, he was found from his fingerprint needed for a Motorcycle License.

Appearances in Other Media
*Desmond Miles makes an appearance in the film, Assassin's Creed: The Beginning (2009), which is a fan-made prequel to the game. It takes a few creative liberties with the story, but stays as faithful as possible. Desmond is portrayed by Michael Burge.

The lead scientist in the research of Altair. He is a scientist (the exact position is not clear) of Abstergo Industries. He is shown to be somewhat of a ruthless man. He can also be seen as fair, as he "allows" Desmond access to his emails when Desmond pickpockets him. (This is presumptuous. Vidic was was set up as something of a clumsy man. Through numerous emails he is constantly asking for passwords that he has forgotten, or he is thanking Lucy for returning his key pen to him. The fact that it is stolen from him could simply be him being the unaware klutz that he is shown as. It is possible again, that with all the cameras, that Vidic is in fact letting him out. As Vidic vouched for Lucy who's an Assassin, maybe he supports them as well).

He did not admonish Desmond even after his cryptic reply to Desmond's questions: "I think you know enough already." Desmond demands an explanation and Vidic offers "You know what I mean." This leads to the insinuation that he knows Desmond is viewing his emails, but does not retaliate harshly because he believes you have the right to know what is going on, to some extent at least. Initially, he attempts to push Desmond beyond his limits by keeping him in the Animus, only to be accosted by Lucy. Relenting slightly after Lucy's initial concerns, he is further pacified after Desmond agrees to not resist their work. He remains pushy throughout the game, chastising Desmond for wasting time at the Animus memory selection screen for delays or for walking around the room in the middle of a memory segment.

Emails accessible after the completion of a memory segment further show him to be impatient, perhaps to the point of being sloppy. His emails are written without capitalization, and he doesn't bother signing his emails. He wonders aloud to Lucy why she bothers signing hers, since it indicates the sender quite clearly in the header. On at least one occasion he loses his access badge, which Lucy finds and returns for him. He is dismissive of her calls for him to be more careful with it, replying that she should be more focused on the Animus and their work with Desmond.
