The Piece of Eden
The Piece of Eden is one of several ancient objects left by Those Who Have Come Before, possessing different effects, that is able to bend people to the will of the user. One of the greatest weapons known to man, it is capable of ending wars and (provided it is used correctly) ushering in a forced peace.

It is believed by the staff of Abstergo Industries and the Templars that the Piece of Eden, along with other artifacts like it, was the source of such miracles as the Parting of the Red Sea, the successful use of the Trojan Horse by the Greeks to win the Trojan War, the miracles surrounding "the Christ-figure" who founded the Christian faith and the Biblical plagues that ravaged Egypt, among other supernatural happenings.

Apart from its power to force almost anyone into serving its possessor, the Piece of Eden's greatest power is that its existence essentially disproves the existence of an all-powerful God. The Templar Order had already committed itself to exposing the claims of all religions as false, and the Piece of Eden is perfectly suited to the successful pursuit of this purpose.

Incidentally, each Piece of Eden also contains a holographic map of the Earth that shows the location of all the other Artifacts. The Masyaf Piece of Eden was destroyed during its experimental use by Abstergo Industries at the Denver International Airport. Using Altair's memory of events, however, the map showed the locations of the other Pieces of Eden.

After Altaïr took control of the Assassins, their new goal was to hunt down and destroy the last of the Templars and the Pieces of Eden. During the events of Assassin's Creed Bloodlines, Altaïr starts to study the artifact, writing about its powers and his own theories. When the Cypriots blamed Altaïr for the disasters that struck the island and tried to attack him, he used the Piece of Eden to control their minds, forcing them to hear the truth, that the real culprit was the Templar Grand Master, Armand Bouchart. After reaching the Archives in Limassol, and killing Bouchart, Altaïr kept the Masyaf Piece of Eden, not leaving it in the Archives as he had first intended. It is unknown what happened to the Masyaf Piece of Eden after Altaïr and Maria traveled "East". On an interesting note, the object is referred to as the "Apple of Eden" in the game.

In Assassin's Creed 2, it is revealed that the Apple itself has a rather extensive history of changing hands while decrypting the "Truth" files left by Subject 16. Notable figures in history have used it, although for varying purposes; including, but not limited to: Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington, Gandhi, Houdini, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and even Winston Churchill and Adolph Hitler. It is also revealed that there are at least 3 Apples remaining in the world, which represent the three divine Golden Apples of Greek mythology.

Free Will & Temptation
In the cut-out scene at Masyaf, after Altaïr assassinates his sixth target, Al Mualim makes some statements about the Piece of Eden other than those mentioned above. Altaïr asks Al Mualim, "What is it?" The answer is, "It is Temptation! It is what drove Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden." In other words, it was what was called "the apple" from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil - the one the Serpent offered to Eve. What the Serpent was actually offering her was the free will to make her decisions based upon knowledge rather than blind obedience to God. Free Will, which Altaïr champions repeatedly is this temptation.

The "success of the Trojan Horse" - while implied - is not what is said. Al Mualim names the Greek deity Eris, the goddess of discord, specifically as being responsible for the Trojan War. Order is a highly valued principle throughout the game, as well as within our societies. We are shown throughout the game to what lengths men of power will go to maintain and hold onto that power through the pursuit of Order - an order that is imposed by them at any means or cost. Other people are merely pawns in their games.

And these are games of control and manipulation, through promises of a better life...one that does not come until death. One cannot achieve this unless one is obedient to the laws of one's society and lives them to the letter. To take on the temptation of Free Will and accept responsibility for one's self and whatever one does or says is to step outside these carefully laid boundaries of behavior. If too many people do this, then order ceases to exist. It is why books have repeatedly been burned throughout history; why scholars and intellectuals have been persecuted. They may know too much and "their words infect others" - as Madj Addin says. Several times through the game things are said that indicate the belief that mankind is incapable of doing this without crime and violence erupting in its wake. The "lies" told in the books that Jubair would burn speak of things like free will and other knowledge that would reveal the lies the Templars are telling to be untrue. Altaïr is described as being "arrogant" and "a traitor" - like a certain angel named Lucifer who rebelled against the laws of Heaven...for Altaïr believes that people should have the free will to decide their own destinies. He exhibits free will at the beginning, claiming his way is the "right way" and he knows better than Malik or Kadar. During the final cut-out scene with Al Mualim, Free Will and Illusion are mentioned extensively.

Resistance
In an e-mail at Abstergo Industries it is revealed that the company's leaders are worried that the Pieces of Eden are not all that is needed to achieve their goal. It is mentioned that some people may be resistant to the mind control effect of the Piece of Eden and that other "Artifacts" must be found to ensure no one is left to cause trouble in the Templar's planned "New World". The only three people so far to show a resistance against the Pieces of Eden are an unnamed person present at the DIA incident, Altaïr, and Ezio. The first sends an e-mail to Dr. Vidic declaring "I know what you did" and gives a firsthand account of the artifact's failed experiment there. Of note is that this person seems to be acting alone and is therefore unlikely to know of the Templars or the Assassins and may not be a member of either organization themselves. Altaïr's resistance is shown when Al Mualim shows him the treasure but Altaïr simply says that to him it is just a piece of silver and does not understand how Al Mualim can believe it to be pure temptation as he describes. This response surprises Al Mualim who later reveals that he had shown the Piece of Eden to Altaïr in an attempt to hypnotize him, but for some reason he could not. However, even though Altaïr is resistant against its hypnotic effect, the Piece of Eden can still do some things to him such as: immobilizing him, causing him to hallucinate and clouding his mind, both of which can be observed during the final battle. Finally, Ezio's resistance is shown when he finally confronts Rodrigo Borgia in Rome. Although this instance has Ezio himself using the Apple while Rodrigo uses the Staff. But Ezio shows no resistance to the combined power of the Apple and the Staff.

There is a high potential that Altaïr passed on this gift to Desmond Miles and his other descendants. Although a small number of theories can be made upon decrypting Truth File #18 because while decrypting it Subject 16 makes comments about scientists finding a specific neurological receptor in the human brain that responds solely to the effects of the Eden artifacts.
Theories About the Piece of Eden and the Other Artifacts
#We are told by Dr. Vidic that they were left by Those Who Have Come Before. "They" could possibly be Aliens, and the artifacts are made of their advanced technology.
#The Artifacts also seems to have other abilities like time travel (it is mentioned in the e-mails on Lucy Stillman's computer). It is possible that they were made in the future and, for some reason, sent back in time. Perhaps when the Piece of Eden was damaged in Assassin's Creed, the map was not showing where to find the other artifacts but it was picking a location for it to travel to safety.
#There was a race of beings on Earth, whilst dinosaurs lived, that created the Artifacts. And it was no meteorite that hit the earth, but some huge explosion caused by the Artifacts that ended much of the life on the Earth at the time.
#Desmond and his ancestors all have some sort of link with the Artifacts, which would explain why they can resist its power.
#(Please edit later as the proof can be found on Youtube) Adam and Eve (who had blue, glowing lines) managed to steal "The Apple" by using free-running (Supporting theory 4) from the Garden of Eden (which looked more like a facility with seemingly enslaved workers working to build possibly more pieces). All of this can be found by finding all the glyphs left by Subject 16 and unlocking the video, "The Truth".
#It has been suggested that at some point multiple pieces of eden became centralized and governed over by a council of Templars and dispatched to parts of the world in which they perceived there power to be in jeopordy. This can be assumed form the decoded glyphs Ezio helps Desmond uncover in Assassins creed II. In one such message a world map is shown with a number of high level dignitaries and historical figures, all implied targets of assassins, all of which were directly involved with restorations, or attempted restorations of trappings of power;IE: Mary I of England whom is on the list, Following her father (Henry VIII) creation of the first protestant state, as well as his standing objection against Pope Paul III, remained a catholic and on her coronation went about persecuting all whom rejected the church's power. It can be assumed she was given a piece of eden by the pope, or other machinations of the templars to bring England back into the fold. As she is cannonically refered to as assassinated by in game content, it can be assumed that instead of confiscating the Apple, the assassins respected the lineage and bestowed it upon Elizabeth I.((This is not fully true as some on this list also represent apparent Templar assassins whom were killed in vengeance for being successful in some measure (John W. Booth).))

Posssible Artifacts and Functions
These artifacts are based on the locations given in Assassin's Creed, and the clues and hints found in all the games.

*The Philosopher's Stone: Converts any material into pure gold.
*The Holy Grail: Although the Templars doubt it's existence, it could prove to be real. Possible Functions: Grants eternal life, among other things.
*The Crystal Skulls: Quartz Skulls found in Ancient Temples. Telepathic Communication. Currently possessed by the Templars.
*The "Philadelphia Artifact": Time Travel
*The Golden Fleece: A seemingly indestructible piece of armor or cloak. Referenced to in Altair's Codex as a possible Eden artifact.

Rashid ad-Din Sinan, known as Al Mualim, is Altaïr's mentor and master of the Assassin's Order.

Biography
Characteristics
Al Mualim is a extremely wise and just leader, however rather unpredictable and mysterious at times. In Masyaf, a discreet city in the mountains, is located the fortress and headquarters of the Syrian sect of Assassins, where Al Mualin spends most of his time studying.

By his efforts, the Order have become a well-known and feared but rather obscure faction, inspiring fear and uncertainty throughout the land and spreading rumors that increased the already legendary reputation of the brotherhood. That've been accomplished by the murdering of important and sometimes "unreachable" persons, on both public and silent assassinations, which made people of power aware of the constant danger they may be running and regular folks somewhat conforted by the fact that there's someone always watching.

Al Mualim does not just stressed political assassination but education as well, as he had thourough understanding and knowledge pertaining from philosophy to science. This wisdom was employed constantly for the people and his order, in addition to preaching the creed as the only way to achieve the brotherhood's goal of peace in all things, and enphasized that this refers to peace within as well. He constantly reminded the assassins, "Never harbor hate for your victims, for such things are poison.", which aided emotional detachment and ensured the dispatching of a target.

The leader of the assassins often employed his "children" as political warriors, directed to fight as the voice of the people throughout the Holy Land, suppressing those who use their power and influence to commit impious acts against society. He rewards success richly, but despises failure and don't abide traitors.

As he reveals little about himself, almost nothing is known about his early life.

Assassin's Creed
After Altaïr's failure at Solomon's Temple that caused the incapacitation and death of one fellow assassin, caused Malik to lose his left arm, and caused and attacked by the Templars to Masyaf, Al Mualim demotes him from Master Assassin to Novice, removing much of his equipment and his authority at the order. Altair then goes to earn his status back by killing nine men who support the Crusade from both Catolic and Muslim sides.

After killing the ninenth man, Robert de Sable, the dying target states that Al Mualim was, in fact, a Templar. Altaïr then returns to Masyaf and finds out that people in the city has been put in a hypnotic trance, but he along with some fellow assassins are unaffected by the mind control and make way to the fortress. Reaching the castle, he discovers that Al Mualim was responsible for this by use of the Piece of Eden recovered at Solomon's Temple, and confronts his master. After fighting illusions, Altaïr manages to crave his hidden blade onto Al Mualim, ending the cause of the hypnotic trance. As he dies, the leader of the Assassins says that he did it all to ensure absolute peace in the world, and claims that Altaïr, as him, will not be able to destroy the Piece of Eden.

Final Words
(Al Mualim collapses, dying. The Piece of Eden falls from his hand and rolls away).

Al Mualim: Impossible! The student does not defeat the teacher!

Altaïr: La shaiq' waqee mutlak bl kollin mumkin! (Arabic: Nothing is true, everything is permitted).

Al Mualim: So it seems. You have won, then. Go and claim your prize.

Altaïr: You held fire in your hand, old man. It should have been destroyed!

Al Mualim: Destroy the only thing capable of ending the Crusades and bringing true peace!? Never!

Altaïr: Then I will!

Al Mualim: We'll see about that...

Robert de Sable is one of the nine people Al Mualim wants Altaïr to assassinate, and also the last of these nine. A great adversary, Robert de Sable is very good in defending himself from Altaïr's quick and deadly attacks. He is the most trained and the most greatly armored knight Altaïr faces.

History
Born into a powerful family, Robert De Sable was immersed from birth into nobility. Though events during De Sable's life are difficult to pin down. At some point he became lord and ruler of Briollay, France. Subsequently, Robert De Sable entered into the order of Knights Templar and reigned as their "Grand Master" from 1191 to 1193. According to De Sable's entry on Wikipedia, "During the 3rd Crusade, de Sable and the Knights Templar laid siege to the city of Acre, which soon fell. Throughout August 1191, they also recaptured many fortresses and cities along the Palestinian coast, which had been lost previously."

Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Robert follows a goal similar to the Assassins in that he is attempting to end the war in the Holy Land. Al Mualim has no objections against him ending the Crusade but more against the way Robert De Sable attempts to do so - the Assassins would have people find peace themselves, but the Templar would force their "peace" onto others and attempt to control them. Altaïr first encounters Robert De Sable at the beginning of the game in Solomon's Temple, where he has apparently discovered the Ark of the Covenant. However, this is later revealed to be another artifact known as the Piece of Eden, which the Templar wish to use to control the minds of the people, effectively controlling those who opposed the one who held the piece. Believing that God didn't exist, he planned to bring peace and make the Holy Land a utopia by using the piece of Eden. However, since the Assassins had it, he used brutal tactics to control the people as he planned to overthrow King Richard and destroy the Assassins. When his lieutenants were assassinated by Altaïr, he convinced King Richard to ally with Saladin in order to destroy the Assassins. Later Altaïr tried to convince the King of Robert's evil plot, however he didn't know who to trust and let God decide. Altaïr and Robert had to fight to the death, but it was Altaïr who proved that he had God at his side as he finally killed Robert. Though in his opinion it was only a matter of skill.

Final Words
Altaïr: It's done, then! Your schemes, like you, are put to rest!

Robert (laughing coldly): You know nothing of schemes. You're but a puppet: he betrayed you, boy, just as he betrayed me!

Altaïr: Speak sense, Templar, or not at all!

Robert: Nine men he sent you to kill, yes? The nine who guarded the treasure's secret?

Altaïr: What of it?

Robert: It wasn't nine who found the treasure, Assassin: not nine, but ten!

Altaïr: A tenth? None may live who carry the secret. Give me his name!

Robert: Oh, but you know him well, and I doubt very much you'd take his life as willingly as you've taken mine!

Altaïr: Who!?

Robert: It is your master, Al Mualim!

Altaïr: But he is not a Templar!

Robert: Did you never wonder how it is he knew so much? Where to find us, how many we numbered, what we aspire to attain?

Altaïr: He is the master of the Assassins!

Robert: Oui, master of lies, you and I just two more pawns in his grand game. And now, with my death, only you remain. Do you think he'll let you live, knowing what you do?

Altaïr: I've no interest in the treasure!

Robert: Ah, but he does! The only difference between your master and I is that he did not want to share! Ironic, isn't it, that I, your greatest enemy, kept you safe from harm. But now you've taken my life...and in the process, ended your own!

Trivia
*In the game Robert is portrayed as being much younger, possibly late 20's early 30's when he died by Altaïr's blade. In real life he was relatively old when he died of natural causes. His exact date of death is unknown, but it is safe to assume that he died close to the events of Assassin's Creed.
Garnier de Naplouse is the second Templar assigned by Al Mualim for Altaïr to assassinate. He is a doctor and Grand Master of the Knights Hospitalier in the city of Acre and a secret member of the Knights Templars.

Description
Garnier de Naplouse was exiled from France for the cruel and inhumane treatment of his patients. He viewed them less as people, or more as test subjects. He later re-established mad business in the city of Acre where he treats his patients cruelly by conducting experiments on them, torturing them, and not allowing them leave (even going so far as having his men break their legs). In order to not draw attention to his acts he forcefully takes his patients from the surrounding cities of Jerusalem and Damascus with help of Talal, a fellow member of the Templars. He has been protected in Acre due to the amount of coins his family had donated towards the war effort.

Though claiming to be a man of knowledge, Garnier lacks ethics. He never sees the price of knowledge as too high, even if it must be paid with another man's blood.

Death
Garnier was assassinated within his Hospitalier Fortress by Altaïr while attending to his victims. During his monologue after his assassination, he speaks of how he was actually helping people. He claims that the people he took were among the poorest and most ill of the other cities, and that many have recovered and thanked him for his help. He says his methods were necessary to free people from the "prisons of their own minds".

Final Words
Altaïr: Let go your burden.

Garnier: Ah, I'll rest now, yes. The endless dream calls to me, but before I close my eyes, I must know: what will become of my children?

Altaïr: You mean the people made to suffer your cruel experiments!? They'll be free to return to their homes!

Garnier: Homes!? What homes!? The sewers? The brothels? The prisons that we dragged them from?

Altaïr: You took these people against their will!

Garnier: Yes, what little will there was for them to have. Are you really so naive? Do you appease a crying child, simply because he wails? "But I want to play with fire, father". What would you say? "As you wish?". Ah, but then you'd answer for his burns.

Altaïr: These are not children, but men and women, full grown.

Garnier: In body, perhaps, but not in mind, which is the very damage I sought to repair. I admit, without the Piece of Eden-which you stole from us- my progress was slowed. But there are herbs, mixtures and extracts. My guards are proof of this: they were madmen before I found and freed them from the prisons of their own minds...and with my death, madmen they will be again.

Altaïr: You truly believe you were helping them?

Garnier: It's not what I believe...it's what I know.

Trivia
*Garnier de Naplouse (also known as Garnier de Nablus) was a real-life leader of the Knights Hospitalier, who ruled from 1190 to 1192. Ironically, the real-life Garnier was a courageous and brave individual who led the Hospitallers and the Crusaders to many victories: quite a contrast to the sadistic and cruel individual portrayed in the game.
}}Tamir is the first person Al Mualim orders Altaïr to assassinate. He is found in the poor district of Damascus.

Description
Tamir is the largest death dealer in the land and does most of his business in the soul of the poor district of Damascus. He doesn't take kindly to people insulting him and isn't afraid to kill those who do.

At time that Altaïr was searching for him, Tamir had a shipment of weapons for an unknown client that was later revealed to be Robert de Sable (Master of the Templars).

Death
Tamir is assassinated by Altaïr, during a meeting in the courtyard of the Souk Al-Sallah with a man filling out Robert's order. The man claims that he doesn't have enough time and enough men to fill out the order by the deadline. Tamir doesn't take kindly to that and calls him names, saying, "These are the kinds of excuses that I would expect from a lazy or incompetent man." He stabs the man and throws him in the fountain. He then tells the guard to leave him as a warning.

Tamir then starts to going around to street vendors in order to inspect their work, and Altaïr uses this chance to assassinate Tamir. In the cutscene that follows, Tamir claims that he is different from the rest of the death dealers and that his death had a higher meaning. This leaves Altaïr wondering what he could mean.

Final Words
Altaïr: Be at peace.

Tamir: You'll pay for this. You and all your kind.

Altaïr: It seems you're the one who pays now, my friend. You'll not profit from suffering any longer.

Tamir: You think me some petty death dealer, suckling at the breast of war!? A strange target, don't you think? Why me, when so many others do the same?

Altaïr: You believe yourself different, then?

Tamir: Oh but I am, for I serve a far nobler cause than mere profit. Just like my brothers.

Altaïr: Brothers?

Tamir: Ah, but he thinks I act alone. I am but a piece, a man with a part to play. You'll come to know the others soon enough...they won't take kindly to what you've done!

Altaïr: Good. I look forward to ending their lives as well!

Tamir: Such pride. It will destroy you, child.

Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles
A character named Tamir is seen in Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles. Tamir is portrayed as a fat, rich, obsessed merchant who cares about nobody save himself. He is flushed out of his mansion by the player setting some oil barrels on fire. He then gives Altaïr some vital information, and then Altaïr kills Tamir.

It's speculated that this Tamir is a different character from the one seen in original game, sharing only name with him, as it's is unlikely a retcon of events or the same character who somehow managed to survive.
"I know... and the whole damn city knows aswell!

Malik Al-Sayf is the leader of the Jerusalem Assassin's Bureau. One of the first assassins you meet in Solomon's Temple, he is a harsh, yet wise assassin who envies Altaïr due to his skill and rank in the guild. At first, his devotion to the Creed and Al Mualim is unbreakable and undeniable, yet he slowly gains a respect for Altaïr as he changes on his quest to redeem himself.

History
Solomon's Temple
Malik, along with his brother Kadar and Altaïr, was charged with capturing the Templar's Treasure, later found to be the Piece of Eden by Al Mualim. He forewarns Altaïr of his blatant disregard of the Creed when Altaïr murders an innocent old man beneath the Temple to hide their presence and considers compromising the Brotherhood for the chance to kill Robert de Sable. Eventually, Altaïr's stubbornness, headstrong attitude, and arrogance leads to the tragic failure of the mission, costing Malik his left arm and his brother's life. Malik however successfully escaped with the Piece of Eden, and arrived at Masyaf with his arm still attached but bleeding badly, implying it was amputated later.

Jerusalem: 1st Visit
When first meeting up with Altaïr in Jerusalem, Malik makes no effort to disguise his newfound hatred of Altaïr. Pointing out even the most subtle of flaws and the small haughtiness of his attitude whenever possible, the two have an unpleasant meeting when discussing the assassination of Talal. Even though the assassination was a success, he criticizes Altaïr for triggering the City Alarm and alerting the citizens of Jerusalem to Talal's demise.

Jerusalem: 2nd Visit
Though his cold attitude toward Altaïr has gone through little to no changes, he expresses a small level of satisfaction when Altaïr asks for advice and begins to respect the Creed more. After the assassination, he notes that Altaïr had performed just as an assassin should -- no more, no less. When Altaïr says, "It seems everything I do troubles you," Malik suggests snidely for him to "Reflect on that. But do so on your way to Masyaf."

Jerusalem: 3rd Visit
When Altaïr visits Malik for the final time in Jerusalem, the easily angered and quick to criticize Malik has changed, speaking to Altaïr as a fellow assassin rather than the failure that had caused the tragedy in Solomon's Temple. After the skirmish at the funeral of Majd Addin, Malik and Altaïr have a quick, heated argument over whether to chase Robert de Sable to Arsuf or return to Masyaf to seek the wisdom of Al Mualim. Altaïr argues that Malik uses the Creed as a shield, not seeing the entire truth but rather what Al Mualim wants him to see, and then suggests that Malik learns more of the Piece of Eden from the people of Jerusalem and Al Mualim while he hunts down Robert. Before their departure, Altaïr apologizes for his failure at Solomon's Temple, which Malik refuses because he feels that the Altaïr who stands before him at that moment is not the same one that had sparked the defeat at Solomon's Temple.

Masyaf
Malik makes his final appearance at Masyaf, aiding Altaïr in fending off the hypnotized assassins with loyal assassins still unaffected by the Piece of Eden. He then leads an assault at the back of the fortress, going on advice given from Altaïr as he personally deals with Al Mualim. Before leaving, Altaïr tells him "Safety and peace, Malik", who responds with "Your presence will deliver us both". This line coincides with when Altaïr first appeared in Jerusalem. Altaïr said the same line as above, but Malik's line was "your presence deprives me of both". His final appearance before the end of the Memory Block was at the revealing of the other locations of the Piece of Eden, where he catches up to Altaïr.

At some point after the events of Assassin's Creed, Altair mentions in the first codex page that Malik suggested that he forget about trying to understand the Piece of Eden and simply lock it away. Altair seemingly ignored this advice as shown in later codex entries.
