They are located under the city of Rome, and were built in the 2nd century when Christians needed more space to secretly bury their dead, as Christianity was illegal at the time. The entrance to the catacombs was located right next to the Piramide Cestia.

The catacombs were made up of several winding, maze-like tunnels, and the entrance to the Shrine of Romulus was cut into the wall of a presumably bottomless hole, requiring Ezio to drop down and grasp the wall to enter it. Near the end of the catacombs, Ezio was attacked by several Followers of Romulus, but they were easily dispatched. Upon reaching the shrine, Ezio took the key and scroll of Romulus within it.

Trivia
*This particular Lair of Romulus must be completed within 8 minutes to achieve full synchronisation.
*Should the player ever come to a fork in their path, scanning the wall in Eagle Vision will reveal an arrow pointing in the right direction.
**Alternately, the flames of each torch on the wall are also blowing towards the path leading to the exit.
*If the player scans in Eagle Vision in the large cathedral near the entrance they will see two of the many cryptic messages that Subject 16 left on the floors of Abstergo , albeit partly obscured by objects in the room. One is the word puzzle that says: "Artefacts sent to the skies to control all nations to make us obey a hidden crusade; do not help them." The other is the pyramid of Eden with the Apple on top.
*There are several spots throughout the catacombs where you can see the Followers of Romulus running through the catacombs. You can see their shadows in the torchlight, and they'll run down paths and disappear, etc.

The Palazzo Medici is the palace of the Medici family in Florence. It can be explored in Assassin's Creed II as a Secret Location, after inputting a code that comes with the Black or Master Assassin's Editions. Each code is unique and can only be used once. It can also be downloaded along with the Bonfire of the Vanities DLC.

Plot
The objective of the mission is that Ezio (after he kills Francesco de' Pazzi, or at any time after sequence 4) must rescue Lorenzo de' Medici from the Pazzi soldiers that have captured him inside his own palace. The reward for completing this is access to a stash of florins in a Templar strong box.

Trivia
*This is one of the few buildings in the game whose roof cannot be reached, even while using the "Climb Leap" technique.
*Although Ezio is unable to reach the roofs through any means, La Volpe is seen to have managed a way to the roofs, hinting that he may know of techniques Ezio does not know.
*Access to the courtyard and roof is possible by using the throwing-knives glitch off of a nearby view point. No textures exist inside the courtyard, though, and escape is impossible, so there is no point going into it.
