At the beginning of ''[[Assassin's Creed]]'', Richard and his army have just taken the port city of [[Acre]]. His ultimate goal is to lead his army into the city of [[Jerusalem]] so that he can free the holy land in the name of the Christian faith.

With a base of operations established in Acre, the Crusaders prepare to march south. However, [[Saladin]], leader of the Islamic army, currently rules the city of Jerusalem. Stinging from his army’s defeat at Acre, he will not allow Richard to humiliate him again. The Muslim forces are massing in the ruins of Arsuf, intending to ambush the Crusaders and prevent them from reaching Jerusalem. These war manoeuvres have left the rest of the Holy Land wide open. While Richard and Saladin battle one another, the men left to govern in their stead have begun taking advantage of their new found positions of power. Exploitation, manipulation, and provocation rule the day.

Richard is completely unaware of his men's intentions by being so involved in this war against Saladin. Richard's only goal is to reclaim the Holy City of Jerusalem in the name of God and for Christains. Several of his lieutenants are [[Robert de Sable]], Grand Master of the [[Templar]]s , [[Garnier de Naplouse]], Grand Master of the [[Hospitaliers]], [[William of Montferrat]], Regent lord of Acre and [[Sibrand]], Grand Master of the [[Knights Teutonic]].

Richard the Lionheart makes a brief appearance during two missions in the game. First when he is seen arguing with William, and then, near the end of the game at Arsuf, where he personally confronts Altaïr. He was unaware of the Templars' plan to betray him by using the [[Piece of Eden]] and conquering the Holy Land in the Templar name. After [[Altaïr]] had assassinated everyone but Robert, Robert attempted to convince Richard to ally himself with Saladin against the [[Assassins]], their common enemies. Altaïr learned of Robert's plans and personally rode to Arsuf to tell Richard of the Templars' betrayal.

When Altaïr told the king of Robert's treason and Robert denying it, Richard didn't know who to trust after Altaïr asked Richard if he was actually truly surprised by his subjects' plan of betrayal: he wasn't, but he still didn't trust Altaïr. So he let "the Lord" decide who was the one who told the truth, by letting Altaïr and Robert fight each other to see which one has "God's support". Altaïr's efficiency with the Hidden Blade proved superior to the Templars sword skills, and King Richard believed him after. They discussed with each other about the politics and philosophy of war and peace, in which Richard told Altaïr he wasn't ready for peace with Saladin yet, before Altaïr went back to [[Masyaf]] to combat [[Al Mualim]]. <ref name="Assassin's Creed" />

Richard is a man strong in faith, and relies on God for crucial decisions. He, however, seems tolerant towards non-believers, as Altaïr denying the help of God over his victory against Robert did not trouble him.

However, Richard is a strong military leader, and isn't afraid to use his sword to answer his problems. Richard scored a major victory for Crusader army by capturing the city Acre. Later, towards the end of the game, Richard is to do battle against Saladin at the Battle of Arsuf. When confronted by Altaïr about Robert's betrayal, he relies on God to help decide who to believe. He decides the best way to believe which one is telling the truth, in combat. "Surely God will side with one whose cause is righteous!"

Richard believes that mankind cannot ever change. In his mind, the only way for him to bring peace is for his men to crush the enemy: [[Saladin]] and the Saracens.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> Richard was given the name "Lionheart" because of his kindness to his prisoners and because he was fierce in combat. <ref name=wr />

=== Low Ranking Soldier===
The lowest ranking soldiers are the most common Crusaders, having no complicated armor. They're dressed in red and white. They speak English. The Low Ranking Crusaders can't grab, counter, or dodge Altaïr (only blocking with their sword), cannot break Altaïr's grabs, and are dispatched easily. These soldiers can be killed by just one sword/short blade counter, in which Altair will end up impaling the soldier, instead of just throwing him away from himself. Of course, like most guards in the game, these soldiers can be killed with just one Hidden Blade counter. Low Ranking Soldiers are also known to be frightened the most during battle, especially when Altaïr pulls off intense moves. Because of this, they will usually either run away after their comrades are slain, or get on their knees and beg for mercy. The quickest way of doing that is killing their higher ranked compatriots.
===Middle Ranking Soldier===
The middle ranking soldiers are the second most common types of Crusaders. They also speak French or German.These soldiers have some armor worn (heavy chain mail with Plate armor, vambraces and shoulder badges), unlike their lower counterparts and seem to have a degree of combat experience. Because of this, they are harder to kill, and may take a few more hits to kill, unless the player is using the Hidden Blade to counter. These soldiers can grab Altaïr by his robe and throw him, which makes these soldiers a much more deadly adversary than low ranking soldiers. If Altaïr continuously slashes at these foes, they will either counter Altaïr, or dodge him, and can either follow up the dodge by rushing back with a sword slash, or just staying back. These soldiers also can tolerate one sword/short blade counter, though a second one should work beautifully. Those skilled with the Hidden Blade can finish it with one counter. Altaïr can try to grab these soldiers, but there's a chance they will break his grab, and Altaïr will end up on the floor. Low ranked players (those that don't have counter) should chance a throw, then wail on the soldier when he's down.These soldiers CAN and WILL run away if frightened enough by Altaïr, but have a bigger chance of sticking around and fighting than the lower class soldiers.

The high ranking soldiers are the least common types of Crusaders (excluding the Templars). These soldiers also wear red and white, but the prancing lion on there chest is gold instead of white and red, also there uniform is longer than the low and middle ranking soliders and they have additional armor (also chain mail), and a knight helm. Like the middle-rankers, they speak French or German. They are easily the strongest (excluding the Templar Knights) soldier. They are usually found leading a small troop of lesser soldiers on patrol. These soldiers can take two counters before dying or you can use the Hidden Blade counter. They also have practice at the fine art of countering.There is a very high chance Altaïr's slashes to be countered, usually ending up with Altaïr being smacked across the face and falling to the ground. These soldiers also have a huge chance of breaking grabs, and dodging attacks. You should focus on their underlings (at least until you get the defence break move) and wait for them to attack (where you can soften them with a counter) .These soldiers rarely flee from battle,usually fighting to the death.

The toughest non-boss unit that is found in game. They are not actually aligned with the Crusaders' goals. The Templar Knight is similar to the High Ranking Crusader Soldier (see above) except the Templars have Plate Mail Greaves, wear a Templar tunic, and the helm and sword are usually bloodstained. The Templar speaks all three Crusader dialects (English, French, and German). There are sixty Templar Knights lurking in secluded spots throughout the entirety of Outremer (besides Masyaf). They are very hostile and will attack you on sight. While usually found alone, the fight could easily attract extra guards or more seriously, ruin a mission. The Templar Knight is not much more durable than a high ranking soldier, but is more aggressive and you should be wary of one at all times. He will counter most of your grabs and attacks and as a result, you should have counter and a medium size health bar since three counters are needed to finish the fight. If you don't flee to the high ground, try to get the Templar to fall off. Either way, you can chance a grab, if the Templar ends up on the floor, use the Hidden Blade to finish him. When a Templar confronts you, usually the other guards will give you room for your duel, though note the Templar will never flee.
