Il Carnefice (1473–1500) was a member of the Templar Order, and an executioner active in Rome during the late 15th and early 16th century.

His genetic memories were later used by Abstergo Industries for the training of the Animus recruits, under the title of the Executioner.

Biography
Working for the Borgia
Around 1497, Il Carnefice worked under the direct employment of Cesare Borgia, often receiving instructions from him through Fiora Cavazza.

On one such instance, she brought him a list containing Cesare's next condemnations. Upon studying it, Il Carnefice acted serious, telling Fiora that her name was one of those listed, though he quickly revealed that he was only playing a prank on her, and admitted that he could not read.

While under the Borgia, Il Carnefice performed any execution assigned to him with both enthusiasm and brutality, often chopping off the body parts of his victims and displaying them to his approving audience. Fiora once described him as a beast, one she found more disgusting than intimidating.

Death
In 1500, Il Carnefice forced himself onto a woman named Livia, only to have her hanged afterwards. The woman's husband later mourned her death, but was unable to remove her body from the noose at the threat of being executed by Il Carnefice himself. Despite the threat, the man remained by her corpse mourning her, resulting in Il Carnefice sending several of his guards to arrest the grieving husband.

This caught the attention of the newly arrived Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who decided to aid the man by rescuing him from the guards, then exacting his vengeance on Il Carnefice. Ezio infiltrated Il Carnefice's cliffside house in the north-west Centro District, where he was discussing his latest kill with an associate of his. He swiftly assassinated him from above with his Hidden Blade, bringing the executions of many innocent citizens to a halt.

Date of Birth: 1473<br />
Profession: Executioner

There's nothing in the history books about Il Carnefice, so I did a little digging in Abstergo's mainframe. Here's what I found: "A natural ally for the Borgia, Il Carnefice kills to the roar of an approving crowd."

The other small piece of information I could dig up is that he fancies himself as some sort of twisted artist. I guess that explains the crowd bit. I wonder if he does tricks while performing executions, or whether it's all in the subtle way he pulls the lever?

Trivia
* "Il Carnefice" simply translates to "The Executioner."
* Il Carnefice fights like a Brute when encountered.
* Il Carnefice's axe in the Story mode is not the same one he uses in Multiplayer. Instead, it is the Bearded Axe, a common weapon that is wielded by Brutes, and can be bought from Blacksmiths.
* Il Carnefice is the first multiplayer character encountered in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, and is one of the three Templar agents to be killed in the main storyline (the others are Malfatto and Silvestro Sabbatini).

Description
After having recovered another one of Polo's books, Ezio finds a hidden entrance to the Forum of the Ox' interior. He enters it to investigate and find another Key to Altaïr's library.

Dialogue
Ezio enters the cave.
*Guard 1: What did you find? Another key?
*Guard 2: A door of some kind. Bricked up with hard stone.
*Guard 1: Ah, promising! The first key was found behind a similar door.
*Guard 2: Ti mou les? (Is that so?) And how did they open that door?
*Guard 1: They didn't. The earthquake did.
*Guard 2: Ypérocha. (Wonderful.) All we have are a few barrels of gunpowder.
*Guard 1: This should do. And if it does not, we get more.
Ezio shoots a barrel of gunpowder, hoping for an explosion, but only manages to kill a guard.
*Ezio: Diavolo! (Damn!)
*Guard 1: The Assassin! Go! Go!
The guards set off in a boat and Ezio gives chase.
Give me some room!<br />Never underestimate this madman.<br />Na pári! (Dammit!)
Ezio and the guards fall down a waterfall.

Description
Ezio overhears a conversation between a couple of guards and learns that Dilara, like the other spies, has been captured and taken to the prison. Ezio sets out to free her.

Dialogue
*Guard 1: Did you happen to see that? We caught another of the Sultan's spies lurking about. A woman this time, disguised as a harlot of low birth.
*Guard 2: Sending his harem girls now, eh? It seems the Sultan is running out of skilled fighters. Where did you take her?
*Guard 1: Inside. Into the prisons. But she won't last long. Not with Shahkulu in charge.
Ezio makes his way towards Dilara's cell, but comes across a meeting between Manuel Palaiologos and Shahkulu first.
*Manuel: How soon before my soldiers are trained to use those guns?
*Shahkulu: A few weeks at most.
*Manuel: The Janissaries will know I have betrayed them by now. But do they have the resources for retribution?
*Shahkulu: Doubtful. The Sultan's battle with Selim commands most of their attention.
*Manuel: Ah! What the hell is that smell?
*Shahkulu: Apologies, Manuel. Some of these Ottoman prisoners are so... fragile.
*Manuel: Shahkulu, try to moderate your anger. I know the Sultan humiliated your people. But there is no need to spit on men who are beneath us.
*Shahkulu: Hmm. You. Take the woman from the prison and bring her to the chapel.
*Guard 1: Shahkulu, I don't have the key.
*Shahkulu: Find it!
*Guard 1: Who has the key? You?
*Guard 2: I think Nikolos has it. He's on leave in the market.
*Guard 1: Hristé mou! (Christ!) I'd like to run that man through with a spear.
*Guard 2: Hey hey. Keep that to yourself, Entáxi (Okay)?
Ezio goes to the market and retrieves the key, after which he returns to Dilara's cell.
*Dilara: You took your time.
*Ezio: You are welcome.
*Dilara: Aman Allahim! (Good God!) What is that?
*Ezio: Not everyone was taken prisoner.
*Dilara: Poor men. Allah sizi kutsasin. (God keep you.) That Turkmen renegade did this. Shahkulu. I'll kill him.
*Ezio: Wait!

Outcome
Ezio frees Dilara from her prison cell, and she sets of to kill Shahkulu, leaving him behind.

Trivia
*To achieve full Synchronization, Ezio must not kill anyone.
*The name of the memory is a parody on the 1977 Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me.
*Oddly, when viewed in Eagle Sense, Dilara will glow red, despite her being an ally.
Ezio Auditore enters a cistern underground located directly underground of the location where Niccolò Polo's old trading post. There he assassinates multiple Templar Captains commanding the excavation, to gain multiple keys letting further progress through the cistern. Ezio is able to retrieve the key by using a hidden passage.

When exits the cistern he meets up with Sofia Sartor, showing her the map of Constantinople with the locations of many rare books.
Dialogue
Ezio slides through the tunnel.

*Byzantine Soldier 1: Thirteen months! Ever since the Grand Master found that damned key. But he hasn't got a clue what he's doing. All he knows is they're somewhere in the city.
*Byzantine Soldier 2: This is a big city.
*Byzantine Soldier 1: To xero! (I know!) That's what I said.
*Varangian: Back to your posts, alirtes (bums)!
Ezio arrives at the first room the underground cistern.

*Templar Captain 1: Look alive, eh? We pay you to watch the doors, not your feet.

Ezio enters another excavation room.

*Guard: I'm sick of this place. I really am. Eight hours of this filth. Apistefto. (Unbelievable.)
*Templar Captain 2: Petros! Make sure we have enough for the excavation. I am tried of stumbling around in the dark.

Ezio arrives at the last excavation room.

*Soldier: Where is he?

*Templar Captain 3: There! In the corner ! I saw something. Get reinforcements1 This is an attack!
Outcome
Ezio retrieves one of Altaïr's Keys.

The Turkish Assassins, also known as the Seljuk Assassins or Ottoman Assassins during the time of the Ottoman Empire, were the Turkish branch of Assassins, existing since their formation during the later half of the 13th century.

Existing throughout two different empires, the Turkish Assassins were mainly involved in a struggle against the Byzantines, the Eastern European embodiment of the Templars. Even after the Byzantine Empire was dissolved, the Byzantines posed a threat to the Assassins, as they were determined to revive their fallen empire. Until the ultimate fall of the House of Palaiologi, the Assassins kept battling their Byzantine rivals.

History
Formation
In 1204, the leader of the Levantine Assassins, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, journeyed to Constantinople in the Byzantine Empire - modern-day Turkey - hoping to introduce the Assassin Order there. However, due to the Fourth Crusade waging at that time, Altaïr was unable to recruit potential Assassins.

In 1257, the tradesmen Niccolò and Maffeo Polo were invited to stay at the Assassins' fortress of Masyaf by Darim Ibn-La'Ahad, the son of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. Being trained into becoming Assassins themselves, Altaïr entrusted them with creating various Assassins Guilds abroad, as well as guarding Altaïr's Codex. When the Mongols eventually attacked, the Polo brothers left Masyaf, also being entrusted with safeguarding the five keys to Altaïr's library underneath Masyaf.

The Polos then traveled back to their home in Constantinople, where they were successful in creating a guild and bringing the Assassin ideals to the Byzantine Empire. However, the Byzantine Empire was controlled by the Templars, and the Byzantine Emperor ordered the capture and execution of Assassins throughout his Empire.

The Byzantine Empire was eventually defeated and usurped by the Ottomans in 1453, resulting in the foundation of the Ottoman Empire. Templar presence in the Turkish region became minimal, allowing the Assassins Order to develop.

Growth of the Brotherhood
By the later half of the 15th century, the Ottoman Vizier Ishak Pasha - secretly an Assassin - took a leading role over the Turkish Assassins. Ishak Pasha fought and defeated Vlad "the Impaler" Tepes, a secret Templar, and brokered a truce between the Assassins and Ottomans.

During the late 1480s, Ishak Pasha had begun recruiting Ottoman citizens into the Assassin Brotherhood. One of these Ottomans was Yusuf Tazim, whose father also was an Assassin.

In 1497, Ishak Pasha died. Control over the Turkish Assassins later shifted to Yusuf Tazim, who had by then become a Master Assassin. In 1502, a group of Turkish Assassins, including Tazim, and Venetian Assassins met in Greece to make plans to end the Venetian-Ottoman war, being successful in doing so a year later.

In 1506, after some initial conflict, the Ottoman admiral, geographer and cartographer Piri Reis - tired of the artificial boundaries that separate nations - joined the Assassin Order as a scholar and technician, eventually becoming a Master Assassin specializing in bomb crafting.

Fight with the Byzantine remnants
Following the earthquake in Constantinople in 1509, Templar remnants of the Byzantine Empire returned to the city, hoping to restore their fallen empire. The Assassins became engaged in a direct conflict with the Byzantines in the following years, though they also used the hatred between the Byzantines and Ottomans to their advantage, often purposely creating conflict between these factions.

In 1511, the leader of the Italian Assassins and a Mentor in the Assassin Order, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, journeyed to the Turkish Assassins' headquarters in Constantinople with the intention of finding the five keys needed to open Altaïr's library underneath Masyaf fortress. Greeted by Yusuf Tazim, Ezio was quickly taken in and introduced to various techniques that the Turkish Assassins used, including bombs and hookblades.

Though Yusuf still led the Turkish Assassins, it was Ezio who took a leading role over the Turkish Assassins against the Byzantine Templars. Recruiting many new Assassins and taking back Constantinople from Byzantine control, Ezio even sent Turkish Assassins to various regions across the Mediterranean, thwarting the Templars' plans and taking over cities from Templar control.

In late 1511, Yusuf led a group of Assassins to attend a cultural exposition held in Topkapı Palace by Ottoman Prince Suleiman, knowing that the Templars were going to infiltrate it. Joined by Ezio, the Assassins went disguised as minstrels from Italy, with Ezio distracting the guests and discovering the Templar infiltrators using his Eagle Sense. Successfully locating all Templars before they could bring harm to Suleiman, the Ottoman Prince and Ezio became friends and allies in the process.

In early 1512, the Turkish Assassins aided Ezio Auditore in setting sail for Cappadocia to find the last Masyaf key, as the Janissaries were blocking the port to make sure Ezio did not leave the city. While destroyed the Great Chain spanned across the Golden Horn Ezio burned the Ottoman boats blocking the boat, Yusuf and a group of other Assassins kept the Ottoman guards at bay. Ezio successfully opened the harbor, and joined Piri Reis on the boat to Cappadocia.

Conflict with Shehzade Ahmet
Though before Ezio left, he asked Yusuf to protect a woman named Sofia Sartor, a bookseller Ezio expressed interest in. Yusuf agreed, and he and several other Assassins had taken up positions around Sofia's bookstore to ensure her safety. Though Ezio was able to eliminate Manuel Palaiologos in Cappadocia, marking the fall of the Palaiologi and the ultimate destruction of the Byzantine Empire, the Byzantine Templars became under the full control of Ottoman Prince Ahmet, the favored son of Sultan Bayezid II who had secretly made plans for the Templar Order from within the royal house. On order of Ahmet, the Templars attacked Sofia's store to capture her, knowing she was close to Ezio. Though managing to kill a large group of Templars, Yusuf was eventually stabbed fatally in his back. Ezio discovered the body upon his return to the city, which served as a large motivator for the Assassins to strike back at Ahmet and the Templars, who were hiding in the city's arsenal.

The Assassins led a full-on assault on the arsenal, and numerous Assassins and Templars faced off against each other. Ezio reached Ahmet deep inside the arsenal, but had to spare his life in order to find out Sofia's location. Offering a deal to trade Sofia for the Masyaf keys, Ahmet and the Templars left the arsenal.

Before going to the exchange near Galata Tower, Ezio appointed Tazim's lieutenant Dogan to become the new leader of the Turkish Assassins. Suspecting the exchange to be a trap, Ezio had the Assassins take up positions around the perimeter, and they jumped in as soon as Ezio's suspicions became true. Nonetheless, Ezio managed to successfully rescue Sofia, and the two of them chased after Ahmet in the countryside around Constantinople. After a long chase, Ezio and Ahmet ultimately found themselves falling from a cliff, only to be saved by Ezio using one of his parachutes. Right afterwards, they were joined by Ahmet's brother Selim, Suleiman's father, who had just become Sultan and was on his way back to Constantinople. Selim attacked and strangled Ahmet, and eventually shoved Ahmet off another cliff to his death. Only for his son's respect for the Assassins, Selim spared Ezio's life, but ordered him to permanently leave Constantinople.

Nonetheless, Ezio and Sofia returned to Constantinople, with Suleiman's knowledge and Selim's temporary consent. Ezio made preparations to leave and to stabilize the Assassins in the city. Azize, a female Assassin who had taken care of Sofia's bookshop in her absence, was allowed to run the shop full-time and the Brotherhood bought it from Sofia. With Dogan as the leader of the Turkish Assassins, Ezio knew that the Brotherhood in the Ottoman Empire would continue to thrive. Eventually, Ezio left for Rome with Sofia, who had become his fiancée.

Origins and appearance
By the 16th century, the Ottoman Assassins wore tanned white Assassin robes with an orange chest-plate, and blue pants. In some cases, Assassins also wore Ottoman masks underneath their hoods, and some Assassins always wore their hood down, like Yusuf Tazim, in contrast to common Assassin custom. Each of them were equipped with a hidden blade and a hookblade, which they used for fast and easy climbing and for transporting via ziplines, so they could make their way to their destination fast.

During the time of the Ottoman Empire, people from various countries and regions around Turkey were attracted to the empire, which resulted in the Assassin Brotherhood containing members from various different cultures and ancestries.

Techniques
The basic techniques of the Turkish Assassins were similar to those of the Levantine Assassins, who were the Turkish Assassins' spiritual forebearers. However, the Turkish Assassins invented their own upgraded version of the Hidden Blade, called the Hookblade, which allowed for faster climbing and faster travel via Constantinople's ziplines.

The Turkish Assassins were also introduced to various types of bombs, by trade from China. The Turkish Assassins trained themselves in their usage, and the Master Assassin Piri Reis eventually created more specialized bombs with experience gained in the Ottoman navy.
