Micheletto Corella (1470 - ?) was a condottiero, at one point the governor of Piombino and a member of the Templar Order.

Biography
Early life
Micheletto Corella was born in Valencia, Spain, but grew up in Rome, Italy. He became a childhood friend of Cesare Borgia and became his protector.

Serving the Borgia
Micheletto would go on to serve the Borgia for the rest of his life, particularly Cesare. He became Cesare's personal executioner, killing any who stood in Cesare's way. He also became a condottiero and the governor of Piombino for a short time.

Siege of Monteriggioni
In January 1500, Micheletto accompanied Cesare to lay siege to Monteriggioni in order to take down the Auditore and acquire the Apple of Eden. They went home victorious with the Apple and Mario Auditore's life taken.

Murders
Many of these murders went unrecorded, though a few managed to be kept known throughout the years.

On 18 August 1500, Alfonso of Aragon, the husband of Cesare's sister Lucrezia Borgia was killed by Micheletto on Cesare's order, as the latter was jealous of Alfonso.

In 1502, Micheletto killed Giulio Cesare da Varano and three of his sons in order for Cesare to be able to take over Camerino.

Micheletto killed Astorre III Manfredi, the Lord of Faenza, on 9 June 1502 inside the Castel Sant'Angelo.

On 31 December 1502, Micheletto simultaneously strangled Oliverotto da Fermo and Vitellozzo Vitelli for conspiring against Cesare.

Teaching Giovanni
At times between 1500 and 1503, Micheletto was left to guard and teach Giovanni Borgia, Cesare's adoptive son and Lucrezia's biological child. He attempted to teach Giovanni to be tough and merciless, strangling an old man who was talking with Giovanni and beating him. Thus, Giovanni grew to hate Micheletto and this became one of the reasons for him to walk away from home.

Final tasks
In 1503, Micheletto accompanied Cesare to a meeting with Francesco Troche, who had told his brother Egidio of Cesare's plans for Romagna. Egidio had sent letters to the ambassador of Venice to warn him, though these letters were intercepted. Francesco attempted to have Cesare spare his life, but he was ultimately strangled to death by Micheletto and his body was thrown in the Tiber River. Micheletto then continued on to meet with some Borgia guards, giving them costumes with which they could infiltrate the Colosseum Passion Play to kill Pietro Rossi, Lurezia's latest lover. Unbeknownst to him, he was being followed by the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who had sent his apprentices to take down all the guards carrying the costumes and take them.

Ezio continued to follow Micheletto to the Colosseum. Ezio took down all the Borgia arquebusiers and put on his costume. Micheletto and Ezio both joined in the play and as soon as Ezio came close to Micheletto, the latter was stabbed by Ezio. However, Ezio did not finish him off, saying that Micheletto would bring himself down by aiding Cesare.

Cesare later killed his father, Pope Alexander VI, after the latter attempted to poison Cesare. As a result, the Borgias' influence over Rome was gone and Cesare became powerless. He had sent Micheletto to gather an army to take back Rome, though he never arrived and instead, Cesare was captured by the Papal Guard. Micheletto fled Rome, though he was captured on the order of Pope Julius II. Micheletto's fate remains unknown.

Final words
(As Ezio makes to stab Micheletto, he laughs.)

Micheletto: You cannot save Pietro. The wine he drank was poisoned. As I promised Cesare, I made doubly sure. (Ezio gets up and leaves him.) I am not yet dead.

Ezio: I did not come here to kill you. He who is the cause of someone else becoming powerful is the agent of his own destruction.

Trivia
*During a mission, where you have to rescue Volpe's theives, who were spying on Cesare, after their cover was blown, one of the thieves refered to Micheletto as Cesare's "butcher".
*In the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood mobile game, Micheletto is called Michelotto.
*When assassinating Micheletto, he will be wearing a black shirt, when he is saying his Final words he is wearing ordinary clothes.
*In the novel, Micheletto helps Cesare escape but feels he's being mistreated by Cesare and attempts to kill him but is shot in the face, shortly followed by Machiavelli being maimed by Cesare's gun.
The Vaticano district is one of the four districts of Rome, and a location in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. It is found on the west bank of the Tiber River and is the location of some of Rome's greatest landmarks, such as the Basilica di San Pietro and the Castel Sant'Angelo. In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, it is the only district in Rome that doesn't include any shops other than Doctors, and the only district that does not need renovating.

The iconic weapon of the Assassin's Creed series, the Hidden Blade is used both for stealth assassinations and for regular combat.

Assassin's Creed
Although Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad already has this weapon at the start of the game, he loses it when he is demoted to Novice. At his first promotion to rank 2, however, he earns it back (along with his sword) so that he may perform his first assassination on Tamir, the black marketeer, in Damascus.

Basic usage
thumb|300px|right|Video tutorial on usage of the Hidden Blade.
This weapon is mostly used for stealthy, low profile assassinations upon soldiers. An unaware soldier may be assassinated without drawing too much attention, with stealth assassinations being possible from both behind and in front of the target. Altaïr rams the blade into the victim's abdomen (front) or through his spine (back). When stealth is not a priority, Altaïr may perform a high profile assassination. This involves Sprinting towards the target at hand, jumping and thrusting the blade into the victims throat, or major arteries in the neck. Also, Altaïr will perform another assassination by pushing the target onto his knees and stabbing him in the neck when approached from behind.

The Hidden Blade is the only weapon that Altaïr may wield while sprinting. When Altaïr is close enough to the victim during a foot pursuit, the button on the weapon hand button on the HUD will change to "assassinate", which can be pressed to carry out the assassination. Altaïr will perform a running leap, landing on his victim from behind and burying the blade in the neck. This feature makes it an ideal choice for running down targets who flee such as Talal, the slave trader, in Jerusalem.

Both low and high profile assassinations may fail. A guard wary of your actions may catch your arm when you attempt the kill and throw you back. Attacks from behind and attacks made upon guards who are prone on the ground will never fail, no matter the circumstances. Be aware, of course, that you will lose one third of your synchronization if you assassinate innocent civilians with the Hidden Blade, just as with any other weapon. However once you complete the game and replay a memory block, you will not lose synchronization if you kill innocent civilians.

Air Assassination
In a 2007 demo of the William V of Montferrat mission, Jade Raymond introduced a move called air to assassinate that combines some of Altaïr's acrobatic skills with his Hidden Blade. From higher ground above a target such as a nearby roof or beam, Altaïr leaps directly onto his victim and stabs him in the throat. Although the move was not covered in the manual or in-game tutorials, air to assassinate does exist within Assassin's Creed and the controls were documented by "Stabguy" on The Hidden Blade website. All forms of air to assassinate draw attention of nearby guards, even when performed in low profile. Note that in Assassin's Creed II, Air to Assassinate was renamed Air Assassination and included as a required tutorial with simplified controls.

In combat
The Hidden Blade can also be used while in combat. An enemy who has been grabbed and thrown (or counter thrown with a grab break) can easily be killed while he lies on the ground. Using the Hidden Blade in combat against large groups is challenging, as Altaïr cannot block any attack. The time frame in which Altaïr can counter-attack is extremely small compared to the sword and the short blade, but successfully countering enables one of several different – and always lethal – counter-attacks in which Altaïr stabs his opponent in the chest, head, abdomen, base of the skull, or spine. It is also possible to assassinate the enemy in combat, while he is caught in a moment of inattention or grappling with a vigilante, or if he is taunting Altaïr (this is documented on The Hidden Blade as the "taunting penalty"), but any other time it will fail because the enemy will always block the attack. It is also possible to assassinate your targets even if they are aware of you by getting behind them and assassinating them.

Mechanism
The hidden blade is worn on the left hand. The blade is integrated into the vambrace, and when not in use, sits retracted inside of the slide mechanism. Though not fully or officially understood, as to how the blade functions, there are a number of theories. One being that when the Assassin flicks his wrist, the blade is ejected with the combined force of the arm and gravity. The user is "unhinging" or "releasing" the blade which is kept locked in place. If the Assassin keeps pulling with his arm on the mechanism, the blade stays out and can be used in open combats. Another popular theory is that a ring mechanism is used and that opening the hand ejects the blade, but this raises the question that why the blade does not activate every time he opens his hand, say when leaping for a ledge, and how he can hold the blade in his fist without it retracting. Another, more sensible theory is that it uses both mechanisms to operate the blade and that the blade wont eject or retract without both systems being used. One being the flicking of the wrist, and the ring mechanism. This explains why assaasins flick their wrist and open their hand to eject the blade and why they can close their fist without the blade retracting and why there is no fear of an unexpected stabbing.

The true mechanics behind the retraction of the blade yet remains a mystery. To retract the weapon, the Assassin loosens his wrist. At this point, the blade returns to the vambrace seemingly of its own accord. Some other theories on the blade's mechanics exist, with some maintaining that the blade works on a spring-retraction system, and with others stating that the blade is never truly locked when it is released, and therefore the blade will return if it is not hold in place.

It is probable that it works on the same system as modern full automatic switchblade knives. There are two springs of equal strength present. The inertia from the pull/push of one spring is enough to overcome the resistance of the other spring for the blade to lock into place.

In the E3 teaser trailer of the game it is seen that Altaïr is pushing a button to operate his hidden blade but in the actual game no such button exists and he does not seem to push anything with his other hand.

In Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, when Ezio woke up in Rome, he got a new hidden blade. When he tested it, it looks like he pushed a button then flicks his wrist.

Role in investigations and missions
Informant missions
The Hidden Blade is also used for some of the investigations given to you by informants. You are asked to stealthily assassinate a number of targets. If any guard even once confronts you, the mission is failed. If you attack the targets or the guards with fists, the short blade, the sword, or any other high profile weapon, you will fail the mission. Because of this, you may only use throwing knives and/or the Hidden Blade to assassinate your targets.

Interrogation missions
During Interrogation missions, after successfully interrogating the target, Altaïr is forced to kill them, so they cannot reveal his plans to the enemy. He will bury the blade in their stomach to kill them, then gently lower their body onto the ground so as not to draw further attention to himself.

Save Citizen missions
In the optional Save Citizen missions to save citizens from soldiers threatening to kill them, this weapon will come in handy. Successfully and stealthily used, you might take out three of the soldiers before they notice you, draw their weapons, and engage you in a swordfight. Also, the Save Citizen missions are commonly located in alleyways or dark corners, so it is possible to begin the mission by starting from an elevated position and performing an air-to-assassinate.

Assassinations
The hidden blade is used in every storyline assassination you perform. Even if you begin by attacking the enemy with a sword, you will always finish them off with the hidden blade before it cuts to the death cutscene.

Assassin's Creed II
In Assassin's Creed II, Ezio Auditore possesses two hidden blades, whereas Altaïr has only one. In addition, unlike Altaïr who had to sacrifice his ring finger, both of Ezio's ring fingers are intact due to a design that raised the base of the weapon itself, as outlined in the Codex.

This revised hidden blade had been designed by Altaïr (presumably through using the Apple of Eden) so that the Assassins, who he intended to go undercover, could not be identified by the lack of a ring finger. Furthermore, the mechanism did not require a wrist "flick" to extend the blade, thus the user could retract the blade without any wrist or hand movement, and as pictured the weapon could be used with a clenched fist (Giovanni has only been depicted as using a clenched fist, while Ezio would use the "traditional" open hand as did Altaïr). W

hile there is a forward/downward-rotating wheel atop the rear portion of the mechanism's housing, its function has not been identified, and there are no known schematics or explanations for the mechanism. In Assassin's Creed: Lineage, there were no shots of it operating while explicitly being worn on the actor's arm without gimmicks (such as an open-ended rear housing through which the blade could be pushed or pulled), so it is probable that no actual working prop exists that operates as depicted.

Ezio's first blade would be inherited from his father, which, along with the corresponding Codex page, the Assassin's Robes and a common sword, had been in Giovanni's secret room after his arrest. The weapon had become inoperative ever since Giovanni Auditore had fought Rodrigo Borgia's men (in Assassin's Creed: Lineage), when a single sword strike against the blade had dislodged it from the bracer and mechanism, but Ezio brought it to his friend Leonardo da Vinci to repair it.

Later on, Ezio would acquire another Codex page which upon decryption by Leonardo detailed the construction of a hidden blade with a metal plate on the top side of the vambrace, allowing the wielder to safely deflect enemy attacks and thus to properly engage in armed conflict with the blades.

At the end of the game, Desmond Miles receives from Lucy Stillman a similar model of the Hidden Blade (if not the same one) used by Desmond to face Warren Vidic's henchmen, but the Poison Blade and Gun are seemingly absent and/or inoperable, possibly due to the fact that the hidden blade that is given still needs improvements from a skilled engineer such as Leonardo, or the fact that lead bullets or the certain alloy used to make the hollowed out blade isn't available anymore.

In combat
thumb|left|300px|Video Guide to the Hidden Blade.
In Assassin's Creed II, the use of the hidden blade in combat is more classical. It can be used like a regular weapon, and is capable of breaking an enemy's defense. It attacks fairly fast, becoming faster after the acquirement of the second blade, allowing Ezio to unleash a constant barrage of strikes, suppressing a foe's ability to attack or killing them before they can attack. While attacking with the hidden blade, enemies cannot counter-attack, unlike when you attack with swords, maces and smaller weapons. Unlike the first game, it is also possible to block attacks while using the Hidden Blade once he has the upgraded vambrace. The hidden blade also allows you to attack very quickly and gives you more freedom in movement rather than the other weapons. For example, Ezio can easily strafe a 180 degree arch in the time it takes for the enemy to attack. This is barely possible except from very close range range with the sword or dagger. It also allows Ezio to quickly flee from a battle without having to take the time to sheath his weapon.

Veterans of Assassin's Creed combat may want to challenge themselves by using the Hidden Blade(s) in combat. While the counter-kill timing window is very short (a fraction of a second), skillful timing will be rewarded nicely; except for against the Brutes' smashes which knock Ezio's weapon away (does not work against Hidden Blades) and Seekers' (sweep Ezio's feet) special attacks, a successfully timed counter will always kill the guard against which it is performed, even if the guard has high health and/or is a high-ranking soldier. In addition, Brutes are very vulnerable and easy to combo kill with the hidden blades. Even a 3 hit combo can be used to kill a brute: see 1:44 in the video to the left.

In addition, he can repeatedly hit his opponent in a wild fashion and eventually break through their defenses and slash their throat or stab them in the chest repeatedly, while sometimes it does a short cinematic, if you are in open combat or in an odd position like on a ledge then it just does it in normal view. It also does this sometimes for no reason, and may be a possible glitch.

Upgrades
The second Hidden Blade is acquired later and the main blade gets upgraded with the poison blade and the pistol installed. Also, both blades get vambraces allowing Ezio to block heavier attacks with the hidden blades. Ezio can buy poison for the blade from Doctors and ammunition for the pistol at Blacksmiths.

Techniques
Later on, Ezio can assassinate enemies below with an Air Assassination, a Double Air Assassination if the target is adjacent to another, by leaping from a platform onto the victim. This, however, is easily noticeable by guards and they will attack once they see you doing it. It is possible to assassinate two guards at the same time (at ground level) by standing between them and piercing both their throats.

At the same time Ezio learns the aforementioned techniques, he also learns how to assassinate enemies that are standing on ledges above him, as well as how to assassinate targets from a hiding spot (e.g. Hay, Wells and Benches).

There are also other techniques that aren't actually part of what Ezio learns, but rather what players use to kill guards. One example would be side-stepping around a guard right after he attacks and then doing a instant kill to their backs with the hidden blade. Also, one can may grab an enemy and strike or throw him so that he falls, and then run to his body to perform a instant kill using the hidden blade before he can get back to his feet. A flashier and possibly quicker alternative is to perform an Air Assassination while running up a nearby wall or other vertical surface (i.e. a pillar). This sort of Air Assassination may also be attempted against standing enemies, though the chance of success is low if the enemy is aware of Ezio's presence during Open Conflict.

Ezio can also perform special combo kill animations and counter kill animations with the dual hidden blades.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
In the beginning of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Ezio's two hidden blades are equipped as he escapes the Vatican. After he returns to Monteriggioni, he removes his armor, hidden blades, and Assassin robes as he takes a rest. He places his father's hidden blade on a table, while he is sleeping with Caterina Sforza. As a cannon strikes his room the next morning, Ezio quickly puts on light clothing and his hidden blade and bracer and runs into the battle. After he and the villagers have escaped, Ezio journeys to Rome, where he faints due to injuries.

In 1503, Ezio has two new Hidden Blades and bracers on each forearm (yet despite the image to the right and other images, only the bracer on his left arm matches the other new parts of his robes). The bracers and the blades are completely different in appearance, but they still function the same with the same codex adjustments to them. During the beginning of the game, Ezio has only a new, single hidden blade courtesy of Machiavelli since he lost both of his previous blades during the Siege of Monteriggioni. However, later on in the game, he meets up with Leonardo da Vinci and asks him to rebuild a new second hidden blade (though this time money is required for materials) that has a more discreet appearance of a glove. A new upgrade is the poison darts which can be shot from the pistol.

Ezio's apprentices are each equipped with a hidden blade. The right to use two hidden blades is only reserved for the most trusted of Assassins or those who have earned the rank of the Master Assassin. However, when an apprentice does reach the rank of Master Assassin, they still do not gain a second hidden blade.

Desmond, in turn, wields a single hidden blade without a bracer, with only three straps to attach it to his arm.

Trivia
*On one of the Codex Pages it states that the blade has to be connected or linked with the user, thus explaining part of why Altaïr had his ring finger removed. Altaïr opens his hand and spreads his fingers whenever the blade is extended. Similarly, he never uses the blade with his hand clenched in a fist; all stabbing moves and assassinations are performed with an open hand. The only time the blade sits in the space left by the amputated finger is when the player extends the blade and holds it out (by holding the weapon hand button while out of combat). Holding the button will keep the blade extended, but it does not act as other weapons, it will not scare away civilians.
*In all three games the trigger mechanism is not visible on Altaïr's or Ezio's hands, even when they aren't wearing gloves.
*Malik Al-Sayf, from the first game, had the hidden blade before he lost his arm but did not have an amputated finger.
*The first recorded usage of the Hidden Blade by an Assassin was Darius, when he assassinated Xerxes of Persia. Moreover, his seal's symbol is the Hidden Blade. However, his ring finger is still intact and he wields it on his right hand.
*Patrice Desilets, the creative director of the game, stated that the addition of a second blade in Assassin's Creed II also had a lucid reason: it's Assassin's Creed II, so there are 2 blades.
*In the film Smokin' Aces, one of the assassins sport a weapon similar to the hidden blade. Also, in the movie G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Storm Shadow uses a weapon similar to the Hidden Blade, though it is limited by the fact it must be operated with both hands. In the new Mortal Kombat: Rebirth trailer Dr. Alan Zane, a.k.a. Baraka has similar forearm hidden blades. In Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny, the character Dampierre fights with two similar hidden blades, although much bigger in size.
*In AC1 and 2 the Hidden Blade is the only weapon that has a counter attack that cannot be blocked by enemies, In Brotherhood certain enemies can counter a hidden blade counter. Though the timing has to be more precise than with a counter with a sword or short blade.
*Ezio's second Hidden Blade on his right arm in Assassin's Creed II is black, compared to the original white one. The original design of the second hidden blade was displayed as a brown glove with a white hidden blade, but it is unknown why it was changed into a bracer with a blade like Ezio's primary Hidden blade and bracer.
*According to the Codex, the second Hidden Blades were made of the rare metal with which Altaïr crafted his armor. Due to the rarity of the metal few blades were made, and given only to trusted Assassins.
* Ezio's second Hidden Blade is black, making it look like its made in Altaïr's secret metal. It is uncertain however how did Leonardo find that metal, since the way to make it was gone lost, and Ezio did not bring any ancient broken blade.
*The Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood multiplayer character, the Smuggler, has a Hidden Blade which extends from the top of her forearm, rather than under her wrist.
*In Assassin's Creed II, after Giovanni tells Ezio to grab everything in his secret chest behind a secret room, Ezio goes home and finds the Assassin robes and wears them. While Ezio puts on the robes, the scene where he is fixing something on his right arm, he is really putting on the brown glove which is displayed in the inventory menu, in the E3 demo, and in some pre-release pictures. Somehow, Ezio's glove is not displayed even though it is displayed that he has it in his inventory where it says "Fists". It is ironic how he obtains the glove when he receives his second hidden blade.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, when you pay for the second hidden blade by Leonardo as a gift from his marked benches, it resembles the design for the second hidden blade from E3 trailer from Assassin's Creed II until you buy armor for it.
*It is unknown why in Concept art of Ezio the secondary Hidden Blade is the same as the primary one, when ingame you can never have the secondary Hidden Blade in that design, It's always a bracer.
*In an Assassin's Creed Developer Diary video, Jade Raymond tells us about Altair's lack of his ring finger which is due to the initiation ceremony when a novice is turned into a true assassin. The ring finger of the left hand is cut off, the hidden blade is installed and the new born assassin is ready to complete the missions bestowed upon him/her. When Ezio gains his hidden blade this ceremony is no longer in use and the blade is wielded without the sacrifice of a finger.
*In the novels, unleashing the hidden blade required a activation switch, however, in the games simply flexing one's wrist triggered the spring mechanism.
The Fall of Monteriggioni was a series of events leading up to an engagement between the Borgia, under the command of Cesare Borgia, and the Auditore which took place in January, 1500.
Return from the Vatican
Steel yourself, Ezio. They will have many questions.
After Master Assassin Ezio Auditore had encountered Minerva, one of Those&nbsp;Who Came Before, who, through Ezio, deliver the mysterious prophecy to his future descendant&nbsp;Desmond Miles&nbsp;in the Vault under the Vatican. Ezio emerged from the inner Vault to he main camber, where he battled Rodrigo Borgia before proceeding to open the Vault. However Rodrigo was missing, and the Staff&nbsp;still secured in the camber floor, attempting to force to Staff from the ground Ezio activated something, forcing the Staff into the heart of the Vault. Subsequently the whole chamber plummeted down, to which Ezio was then greeted by his uncle, Mario Auditore.

Climbing up from the Vault Ezio and Mario made there escape through Rome until they reached a nearby tower, upon climbing it Ezio held the Apple over Tiber river, however he was unable to get rid of such a powerful artifact, deciding to temporarily give the Apple to Mario until decided it's fate the two quickly peformed a Leap of Faith and returned to their home, Monteriggioni, in the Tusany countryside.

Ezio and Mario conversed about what Ezio had learned in the Vault, though Mario assured him that many of the things that the mysterious figure had mentioned would occure in the future, thus they need not worry about it. As they came within sight of the town, Ezio was slightly startled by a cannon ball impacting the ground near them, and Mario explained that his mercenaries were merely testing out the cannons they had installed during Ezio's absence. Entering Monteriggioni, Ezio and Mario were joyously greeted by the townspeople on their return.

Arriving at the foot of the Villa Auditore, the two were welcomed by Claudia Auditore, Ezio's sister, who told Ezio of Caterina Sforza's presence in Monteriggioni. Claudia then asked if what Ezio had started was finally finished, to which Ezio replied that he would explain everything to both her and the others later in Mario's study. As Claudia left, Mario told Ezio to prepare himself for many questions, before going back into the Villa.

Before entering the Villa, Ezio helped some of the townspeople; and while doing so, he learned of Claudia's birthday party that would take place the next day in the Villa. After helping the townspeople and some of Mario's mercenaries by delivering flowers to the Villa Auditore and testing out the new cannons himself, Ezio headed off to the Villa. Caterina Sforza stood waiting in the main hall of the villa, and she greeted Ezio with glee. Caterina explained that she had come to Monteriggioni seeking the assistance of their mercenaries to defend Forli against the Papal army. Ezio told Caterina that they would discuss things after the meeting at Mario's study, to which she agreed.

Reunion
Ezio arrived at the study, where Claudia, his mother, Mario, and Niccolò Machiavelli were waiting. Ezio told them of what he had seen in the Vault, and of his confrontation with the Spaniard, Rodrigo Borgia. He spoke of the "moving portrait" of the goddess Minerva, who had told Ezio about a disaster that would occur in the distant future, as well as the existence of Temples that could aid humanity. After her message, she had called out to a phantom named Desmond, much to Ezio's confusion. After this, the goddess had disappeared.

The others were astounded by Ezio's discoveries, and Claudia asked if the goddess had appeared human. Ezio told her that she had, though her words proved otherwise. Mario asked who Desmond was, and where the Temples that Minerva mentioned were. Ezio could not provide the answer to either. Machiavelli asked Ezio how it had ended with Rodrigo, if he had begged for mercy or had offered him power. Ezio told him that none of these happened, for he had allowed Rodrigo to live. Enraged, Machiavelli told Ezio that sparing him was a mistake. Ezio attempted to explain why he had spared Rodrigo, saying that they should forget the past and focus more on the future, but Machiavelli disagreed vehemently with him, and abruptly left for Rome.

As Machiavelli left, Mario tried to comfort Ezio with his decision, stating that he trusted his decisions. After this, Ezio left the study and returned to his room. There, he undressed and bathed, and was soon by Caterina, who "comforted" him. After the bath, Ezio and Caterina continued their "activities" in bed, which lasted until dawn.

Siege
As they finish, Caterina asked Ezio if he wants to "go again". Ezio replied that she need not to ask. As they were about to begin, cannon fire can be heard from the outside. When Caterina wondered aloud what it was, Ezio assumed it was just the mercenaries training with the new cannons. This was proven wrong, as a cannon ball tore through the windows of Ezio's room, destroying the armor of his ancestor. Surprised, Ezio got out of bed and dressed himself for combat. Taking up a common sword and his hidden blade, while dressed in common clothes, Ezio headed out of the villa through the wall blown open by cannon fire. Caterina leaves the room through the stairs and tells Ezio that she will assist the civilians. After this, the two part ways.

What greeted Ezio was the site of Monteriggioni, under cannon fire, with buildings and structures burning and falling apart. As his eyes wandered, Ezio sees a cannon ball headed his way, which he barely dodged. Ezio falls off the roof of the Villa, but was able to recover quickly. He was then helped up by his uncle, quickly informed Ezio that the Borgia were the invading force. Ezio wondered they did not see the this coming during the night, to which Mario replied that they must have taken a alternative route to the east. As the Villa sustained more damage, Mario instructed Ezio to climb the battlements of the city and assist the mercenaries as the villagers flee. Mario told Ezio that he will lead a frontal assault against the Borgia infantry.

Ezio asked his uncle if he had the Apple, to which he replied that he is keeping it safe. After this, the two bid each other safety and farewell, before Ezio tells Mario to be careful, with Mario reassuring him that he will be, the two then departed. Ezio, with haste, dropped off the villa's courtyard and landed onto nearby a horse, where he rode across the city as it fell apart. Arriving at the side of the city walls, a building collapsed, which caused Ezio's horse to trip over and die. Ezio dismounts just in time, and proceeds to climb up a ladder leading directly to the battlements, after a small delay from a cannonball impacting the walls. Ezio then made his way to the mounted cannons.

Ezio proceed the use of the cannons to destroy the Borgia cannon while also hitting approaching siege tower, which after sustaining enough damage collapsed. As Ezio and the mercenaries defended the city, the townspeople flee to safety of the villa. After all the townspeople fleed to safety, the inevitability of the Borgia to breach the city walls happened sooner that expected, as one siege towers successfully breached the oppisite side of the city walls. One of the mercenaries took Ezio's place as the cannoneer, Ezio then directly ran through the battlement to aid the mercenaries being assaulted be attacking soldiers.

Ezio killed the commanding soldier from above and disposed off the remain attacker. As he did, the inevitable happened, the Borgia breached the city gates, his uncle Mario arriving at the city gates, barely alive. Who followed was Cesare Borgia, aside him his sister, Lucrezia, also being accompanied by his general and a large number of soldiers. Cesare called out for Ezio's attention, stating that he knew of him and his "little group" of Assassins, and also the Apple. Ezio rushed to Mario, as Cesare quickly snatched the Pistol fashioned by the assassin's friend, and points it to Mario's head. Claiming that a cleansing is in order, Cesare shoots Mario with the gun, serving as the invitation of the Borgia to the Auditore. Subsequently, Ezio was shot across the left shoulder and stomach by several of the arquebusiers positioned at the city walls, which causes Ezio to fall of the building unconsciousness.

Escaping the city
Basta! (Stop) I can walk.Waking up, Ezio is greeted by the site of two mercenaries, dragging him across to safety. Ezio abruptly demanded them to let go, stating that he can stand on his own. As he did, the Borgia's soldiers arrive to finish off what they began. Knowing he cannot handle the guards alone, Ezio called for the mercenaries to aid him, without much effort, Ezio and the mercenaries made their way to the villa, to meet up with Claudia.

As he made his way through the city rubble, Ezio arrives at the villa, at the site Claudia and a group of mercenaries are being assaulted by more soldiers. Ezio and his group of mercenaries assisted them, and successfully fended them off. With haste, the group made their way to the Sanctuary, still being constantly assaulted by Borgia guards. Eventually, Ezio made his way to the Sanctuary, after being greeted by one of the thieves of Monteriggioni. The thief told Ezio that they thought he was dead. Before Ezio closed the passage to the sanctuary, the thief left to aid the other factions assisting Ezio. After this, Ezio locked the secret door to the hidden passage, before meeting up with Claudia, Maria and the towns people

Ezio, there, led the escape through a long, perilous passage constructed behind his ancestor's statue, that leads to the outside of the northern walls. After a long journey, navigating through the complex structure and dealing with the guards that managed to catch up with the group, Ezio and the other civilians managed to escape the city, by that time the Borgia assumed Ezio was dead and began to recall their invading forces.

Aftermath
While asking for a horse, Ezio instructed Claudia to take their mother back to Florence. Claudia asked where he was headed, to which he replied that he was going to Rome. As the civilians leave the area, and as Maria bids her son farewell, Ezio rides off to Rome.

As Ezio travels the countryside, he grows weaker and weaker from his injury, and falls off his horse and passes out on the road. After a while, Ezio woke up, dazed and covered in bandages. He was greeted by the sight of a kindly woman, who nursed him back to health. There, she told him that a man took him there and left new equipment for him to use. After this, the woman instructs Ezio to meet up with Niccolò Machiavelli at the Mausoleo di Augusto.

The liberation of Rome has begun.

Trivia
*In the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood novel there are some significant differences during the siege: Mario is shot in the nape then later beheaded. Cesare then finds Ezio escaping the Auditore Family Crypt and reveals the head to him, screaming: "You'll be next!". Ezio and Cesare first confront each other during the siege instead of 1503 in Rome. Ezio is shot by Octavian de Valois instead of the arquebusiers.

Borgia towers are large towers set up by the Borgia in Rome, used to spread their influence throughout the city. To stop this oppression, Ezio Auditore da Firenze has to kill each tower's Captain, and then burn the towers down. To escape the collapsing structure, he performs a Leap of Faith. The tower also functions as the view point for the surrounding area. There are twelve towers (and Captains) in total, and each Captain can act differently when they spot him; wherein some might flee, while others choose to fight. If Ezio lets the Borgia Captain escape, he will have to wait a full 12 hours (in-game) for the Captain to regroup with his guards before he can try to kill him again. With each tower blown up, the Borgias' influence decreases in that particular district, which also provides its merchants the opportunity to reopen their shops and allows Ezio to recruit one more potential assassin into the guild. Crime will decrease, as bandits will start to leave and the number of guards in that area will decrease. The map on the pause menu identifies the towers with a small castle icon, unlike regular view points which are marked with an eagle. To enter a Borgia tower, Ezio will sometimes need to find and access it using a secret entrance.

Once Ezio has destroyed a Borgia tower, it will function as an Assassin tower, which works in the same way as a pigeon coop (assassin recruit contracts and skill point distribution).
*If a Borgia Captain escapes, the player may quit the game and reload their save position to make the Captain 'reappear' instead of waiting 12 in game hours.
*If you kill a Borgia Captain and die before burning the Borgia (falling from a high building for example) you'll have to go through the process of killing him again.thumb|300px|right| Burning A Borgia Tower

Biography
Rise to power
In 1498, Octavian's distant cousin Louis XII was crowned king. Following this, Louis XII assigned Octavian to lead his Italian campaign. Octavian, however, had no real experience in war and just recieved formal training. Nonetheless, Octavian accepted the responsibility.

The following year, Octavian met Cesare and Juan Borgia at the French court. The latter two were there to court Cesare's future wife Charlotte of Albret. After spending a month together, Octavian went with the Borgias to Italy, thinking he'd be given Italy when they'd have destroyed all opposition.

Death
Cesare assigned Octavian with eliminating the mercenaries in Rome. They were led by Bartolomeo d'Alviano, who was in secret a member of the Assassin Order. The French troops attacked Bartolomeo's barracks and managed to capture his wife, Pantasilea Baglioni. Octavian promised to release Pantasilea, should Bartolomeo come into his camp unarmed and alone. Bartolomeo declined the offer and rode towards the French camp with fellow Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze. They discovered that the camp was impenetrable. However, Ezio devised a plan and retrieved some of the French soldiers' uniforms. Bartolomeo had his mercenaries and Ezio put on these uniforms and pretended to be captured by them. They marched towards the French camp and were given entry, as the guards were easily fooled. Once inside, Octavian attempted to kill Pantasilea nonetheless, at which point the mercenaries attacked. Octavian fled deeper into the camp with Pantasilea, holding her at gun-point. Ezio followed him into the camp, though remained unseen. Octavian was killed by Ezio shortly after.

Final words
Octavian: I only wanted respect.<br />
Ezio: Respect is earned, not inherited or purchased.<br />
Octavian: Perhaps you are right... I need more time...<br />
Ezio: Che tu sia parte nella morte (May you be equal in death). Requiescat in Pace (Rest in Peace).
Trivia
*In the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood novel Octavian shoots Ezio during the Siege of Monteriggioni instead Borgia arquebusiers.

The Papal Guard were elite soldiers commanded by the Papacy to serve and protect the pontiff during his tenure. By 1503, the Papal Guard protected Pope Alexander VI, and were led by the Pope's son and Papal Commander, Cesare Borgia. The sole purpose of the Papal guards is to protect the Pope and his family with their lives.

The Papal guards are the most versatile and difficult enemies, as they carry the best of abilities held by all other guard archetypes and can easily deflect and counter many of Ezio Auditore's attacks. They can wield matchlock firearms in one hand, and a sword in the other, making them deadly opponents in both short and long range. Other than swords, they can also be equipped with a variety of long weapons, short weapons, and heavy weapons. It should also be noted that Papal guards are extremely difficult to escape from, as they possess the speed of Agiles, and will always be able catch up to Ezio in a chase.

Trivia
*The Papal guards were the precursor to the Swiss Guard, who have protected the pontiff since 1548.
*The Papal guards may be less skilled than Ezio, however they are considerably stronger and have a larger build; with all of them being at least a head taller than Ezio.
*Depending on the weapon that they are armed with, Papal guards are able to fight as a Brute, Agile or Seeker.
*Although Papal guards are one of the toughest opponents in the game they aren't commonly found in Rome, and will appear more often in storyline missions. However, a group of four Papal guards are always stationed right outside the Castel Sant'Angelo in the Vaticano District, and will also attack Ezio on sight.
*By Cesare Borgia's arrest in December 1503, the Borgia had lost all their power in Rome. However, when Cesare was arrested by Fabio Orsini and the Papal troops, they still carried the emblem of the Borgia.
*Smoke bombs have no effect on a Papal guard while engaged in combat, however, the bombs function as normal if the guard is taken by surprise.
*Cesare Borgia himself fights much like a Papal guard, and is able to dual-wield a rifle and sword as they do.
*In Sequence 8, the Papal guards become much easier to find as the Vatican district is available to be explored. If you're attempting the Mercenary Guild Challenge then it is wise to wait till Sequence 8 before tackling this challenge.

Cesare Borgia (13 September 1475 - 12 March 1507) was the son of Rodrigo Borgia and a nemesis of Ezio Auditore. Like his father, he was a member of the Templar Order. Eventually, he became the commander of the Papal army and a leader in the Templar Order.

Biography
Early life
Cesare Borgia was born in Rome in 1475, to Rodrigo Borgia, the Grand Master of the Templar Order, and his long-term mistress Vannozza dei Cattanei.

At the age eighteen, Cesare became a Cardinal while his older brother, Juan, Rodrigo's favorite, became captain general of the Papal armies. Realizing his life as a Cardinal would reach a dead end and his brother would get everything, Cesare had Juan killed and then took his place a captain general, becoming one of the most powerful men in Italy.

Becoming a Templar leader
In 1496, when his father waged war with the Orsini Family to seize their territory, Cesare joined the battle. Among the enemy's ranks was Bartolomeo d'Alviano, in secret an Assassin. When Bartolomeo's resources were down to three fortresses, Cesare cut off his supplies. When it looked like victory was near, Carlo Orsini arrived with his army and joined Bartolomeo, even wounding Cesare in the face.

Siege of Monteriggioni
In January 1500, Cesare, who had been brought up in the Templar ways, led an assault on Monteriggioni, headquarters of the Assassins in Italy in order to eliminate the Master Assassin Ezio Auditore. Besieging the city, Cesare's forces overwhelmed the city's defenders and handed to him Mario Auditore and Caterina Sforza. Standing at the city gates, the Apple of Eden in hand, Cesare "invited" Ezio to come and face him in Rome with a shot of his firearm that killed Mario. Ezio was then shot down and wounded by a team of arquebusiers, and the battle was won. With Monteriggioni in ruins, Cesare returned to Rome with his prize.

War in Rome
{{quote|He is ambitious, ruthless, cruel beyond imagining. The laws of men mean nothing to him.

By 1500, Cesare had Rome under his iron fist as commander of the Papal army, though it appeared that he and his father sometimes disagreed on his choices. He used Borgia towers to keep control over the five districts of Rome. Cesare was also away for periods of time, overseeing the advancement of his army in a bid to unite all of Italy under his rule.

In 1502, Leonardo da Vinci was forced into service for the Borgia, wherein Cesare made Leonardo build several war machines for his army. However, all of Leonardo's creations were stolen and destroyed by Ezio Auditore, in secret, at Leonardo's own behest.

In 1503, Cesare and his father Rodrigo argued over the former's insatiable lust for power. Rodrigo commented that he had given Cesare all he had, and still his son wasn't satisfied. Cesare demanded that his father give him the Apple of Eden, but Rodrigo refused. At this point, Lucrezia barged in, crying out to her brother that their father was attempting to poison him with the bowl of apples he'd left out. An angry Cesare responded by charging Rodrigo and shoving the apple he'd been eating into his mouth. The poison did its work and Rodrigo died within seconds. Cesare then demanded the Apple of Eden's whereabouts from Lucrezia, who confessed under much pressure. Unfortunately, Ezio beat Cesare to the Basilica di San Pietro (where the Apple was hidden), and retrieved the Apple before him, having witnessed the scene from the window.

Cesare's rule met a downward spiral from there. As a final stab from his father, Cesare had consumed enough of the poison to leave him weak for months. While recovering, Ezio and the other Assassins used the Apple to dwindle his remaining forces and the Vatican fully rejected his request for support, seeing the Borgia's money as "tainted."

After being confronted by the highest-ranking Assassins, whom had eliminated Cesare's last remaining followers, Fabio Orsini arrived with the Papal Guard and a warrant for Cesare's arrest, by the order of Pope Julius II. Cesare was taken away, imprisoned, and later exiled to Spain.

Siege of Viana and death
Cesare spent several years in prison, until a Count gave him a rope with which he was able to escape. He fell 70 metres to the ground, landing on top of a servant who had accompanied him. Despite several fractured bones, Cesare was able to escape dressed in merchant clothes, and join his brother-in-law, John III of Navarre, in Spain.

In March of 1507, Cesare tried to regain his lost honor by commandeering John III's vast army during the Siege of Viana, after which, should he be victorious, he would regain the support of the French. However, unbeknownst to him, Ezio caught wind of Cesare's involvement in the battle and set out for Viana.

During the siege, Ezio located Cesare on the battlefield fighting alongside his men and charged, though Cesare held him back just long enough to dodge Ezio's left Hidden Blade and flee. Ezio's pursuit was delayed by several cannonball impacts that stunned him, and incapacitated the other soldiers in the area.

Ezio would soon catch up to him on the outskirts of the castle walls, where Cesare had his soldiers killed a civilian woman, who was crying for him to help her son, who had been injured. Ezio eventually faced Cesare on the walls of Viana's Castle and fought against him, with Cesare wielding a sword and a pistola. Though Cesare attacked with speed and skill, while also periodically calling reinforcing troops, Ezio nevertheless defeated him, eventually pinning him to the ground. When Cesare vowed not to die at the hands of man, Ezio declared that he would leave Cesare "in the hands of Fate," and threw him off of the castle wall to his death.

Personality
Cesare was born into the Templar Order and, like many of his other siblings, was raised by his father into his personal weapon. However, Cesare was naturally an aggressive and ambitious person, and would do anything for unlimited power. By age 18, Cesare became a Cardinal, while his brother, Juan Borgia, held the lofty title of Captain General of the Papal armies. Cesare, jealous of his position, had his brother killed in order to take his place as general, and begin his rise to power.

Eventually, Cesare came to the conclusion that he would be able to bring all of Italy under the Templars's control. To reach his goal, Cesare conquered multiple regions and cities throughout Italy, successfully controlling Romagna, and bringing the powerful Orsini to kneel before him.

Over time, Cesare deluded himself into thinking that no mortal man could kill him, and that he would lead mankind into a new era; a belief that he held onto until the moment of his death.

Final words
Cesare: The throne was mine!<br />

Ezio: Wanting something does not make it your right.<br />

Cesare: What do you know!?<br />

Ezio: That a true leader empowers the people he rules.<br />

Cesare: I will lead mankind into a new world!<br />

Ezio: Che nessuno recordi il tuo nome. (May no one remember your name.) Requiescat in pace. (Rest in peace.)<br />

Cesare: You cannot kill me! No man can murder me!<br />

Ezio: Then I leave you in the hands of Fate!

Trivia
*Historically, it is said that Niccolò Machiavelli greatly admired Cesare. However, in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, while Machiavelli does respect his ability to enforce his will, he also seeks to eliminate Cesare and his family members alongside Ezio.
*Cesare's comments about bloodshed and the need for cleansing may highlight the origin of the name Abstergo, which is Latin for "I cleanse."
*When Ezio has to save Caterina Sforza from the Castel Sant'Angelo, he encounters Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia kissing each other, revealing that they were lovers. Additionally, Cesare is later arrested on the grounds of incest, along with his other crimes.
*When interacting with Shaun Hastings during Sequence 8, Desmond Miles asks him if there are any good stories about Cesare, to which Shaun replies with "Are you kidding me?", pointing to the fact that Cesare had a very aggressive attitude.
*Despite being shown to be adept with a Crossbow in both Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy and Assassin's Creed: Ascendance, Cesare never wields the weapon in Brotherhood.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (novel), Cesare's face had been apparently deformed due to the New Disease and in some parts, states him wearing a mask. However, in the game, he is never seen with said deformity nor mask.
This article is about the armor that is used in the Assassin's Creed series.

Assassin's Creed
In the first Assassin's Creed game, Altaïr has light armor that consists of leather greaves, leather vambraces, and a leather belt. The vambrace on his left forearm has what appears to be metal plating, but it does not function as armor in the game and is likely only there for decorative purposes, for distinguishing a heightened status within the Assassin Order, or for concealing the Hidden Blade. Because Desmond loses synchronization with Altaïr whenever Altaïr is struck during combat, it is implied that Altaïr was never hit or wounded in armed conflict or during assassinations. This would be feasible, given Altaïr's capabilities as a warrior and his lineage (Those Who Came Before). Using the Apple of Eden, Altaïr created the Codex pages, as well as a new suit of armor for himself, one that was almost impossible to damage. This new armor would be passed down to each of Altaïr's descendants, eventually being hidden away beneath the Villa Auditore.

Other characters
Armor does appear on other characters in the game, and there are differences in the styles worn by guards in each city. The guards in Damascus can be found in either lamellar, leather, or ringmail armor. Guards in Acre can be found in brigantine armor and chain mail, some complete with coifs. Guards in Jerusalem are often found wearing scale or splintmail. Each of these guard types can be found in the Kingdom near their respective cities. The Knights Templar uniformly wear full suits of chain mail covered in a white tabbard with a red steel helm covering their face. Most (if not all) of the Knights Templar wear their signature red cross openly, whereas future Templars bear the cross symbol more subtly.

Ezio can purchase different types of armor from blacksmiths found throughout the game's various cities. There are five sets of armor that can be purchased, each with four individual pieces, namely chest plates, greaves, spaulders, and vambraces.
Leather Armor is the first available armor and provides health bonuses, but no resistance bonuses. Later, Ezio can purchase 'Helmschmied', a variant of leather with metal inlays, 'metal armor' and 'Missaglias', a stylized set of 'metal armor'. Every armor after the leather set offers health bonuses and resistance bonuses. Armor can be damaged through combat or by falling from buildings, so it is necessary to repair it at blacksmiths regularly. Each armor has a set number of circles that it can resist. In general, twenty squares of combat or falling damage to your synch bar will remove one circle of resistance from every piece of armor you have equipped.

The player is able to unlock Altaïr's improved armor by collecting six Assassin seals from the tombs of six different Assassins. After finding and placing all 6 seals in the Sanctuary, Ezio unlocks the armor of his ancestor. It consists of black clothing, with specially made armor integrated into it, akin to the mythical properties of the Golden Fleece. As such, the armor never needs to be repaired. When dyed by the player, all that changes is the inside color of the armor. Page 19 of Altaïr's Codex reveals that this, the only suit made, was owned and/or created by Altaïr, who destroyed the written formula out of fear of the armor becoming widely used, either by friend or foe alike.

Other characters
All types of soldiers in Assassin's Creed II are armored to varying degrees, with archers as the lightest, followed by Agiles, regular soldiers, Seekers, and Brutes. Elite soldiers wear heavier armor than regular soldiers, making them more resistant to Ezio's attacks and counter-attacks. Brutes in particular can only be killed or damaged after a disarm, or with the hidden blade.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
At the start of Brotherhood, Ezio loses the Armor of Altaïr during the seige of Monteriggioni, forcing him to run into battle clothed in a simple shirt, trouses and boots. Later on in Rome, Ezio's new robes and armor are anonymously given to him by Machiavelli. Ezio's newer attire resembles the clothes of Altaïr, with longer robes and a longer hood. Ezio's outfit's armor comes only with a spaulder and a single vambrace. In the game, Ezio's initial new spaulder is leather, while the cover art depicts him wearing a metal spaulder. His new hidden blade bracer is also different in design and is also completely metal. Even the blade is different, bearing tribal designs running through the center of it to the tip of the blade. Just like the metal spaulder, Ezio's second hidden blade does not appear in the game as it does in the cover art. Instead, it is simply a brown glove indicating that he has the double hidden blade equipped. Bracers for the second hidden blade can be bought at a blacksmith, but none of them have the design of the bracer shown in the cover art.

Ezio will be able to purchase armor upgrades, just like in Assassin's Creed II, in a blacksmith shop. It is also possible to complete specific quests for the blacksmith shop on Tiber Island and unlock parts of the Seusenhofner armor. The different Armor sets that can be unlocked in the game are as follows:

When Ezio completes the first Lair of Romulus, he is given the location of a treasure room. Once all Lairs have been completed, he can acquire and equip the Armor of Brutus along with the Dagger of Brutus. This armor, like the Armor of Altaïr, is unbreakable and rewards the most health out of any other armor set besides the Seusenhofer Armor. Like the Armor of Altaïr, this armor and its cape cannot be dyed.

As a bonus for pre-ordering the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood collector's edition from Amazon.com or some other stores, players can receive a highly stylized armor known as the Helmschmied Drachen Armor. The armor is only a cosmetic one, and does not add any bonuses to blocking or to health. Other armor can be worn at the same time, however Ezio will not look any different. Altough the in-game info states that "very few men have proven strong enough to wear it", the activating of this skin won`t have any effect on Ezio`s climbing or free-running skills.

The War Machines were four mechanical devices designed by Leonardo da Vinci for the Borgia forces during the early 15th century.

They each feature in one of four exotic missions for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, and can be found in cities or towns outside of Rome. They include the Machine gun, the Bomber, the Naval Cannon and the Tank. All these machines were commandeered and destroyed by the Master Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, in order to sabotage the Borgia's control over Rome.

Trivia
*When Ezio first arrives in Rome, a herald can be heard announcing the exhibition of the "war machines of Maestro da Vinci" to the crowd.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood novel, there are no war machines. Leonardo tells Ezio that he created the design so it wouldn't work in a discreet way.
