The Crossbow is a weapon in Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. It was originally seen in the introduction for the first Assassin's Creed, but was not included due to historical inaccuracies. However, for unknown reasons, it was still featured in Altaïr's Chronicles and the Gameloft mobile version of Assassin's Creed.

After being spotted in concept art and being mentioned in the E3 2010 Single-Player walkthrough, Jean Francois Boivin confirmed that long-ranged weapons, such as the crossbow, would be available for use in Brotherhood, especially in advanced horse combat. Some guard archetypes (such as the Crossbowman) also have the crossbow as a weapon. Ezio and his apprentices are able to use the crossbow only as a counter tactic in melee combat, similar to the hidden blade in the first Assassin's Creed. The Crossbow works as almost a complementary weapon to the pistol, it has the same range, but is silent. However unlike the pistol it cannot be used in public and if unsheathed will stir crowds and incite guards to attack. The player may also still shoot enemies during close-range combat, but this is an unpreferred tactic, as the crossbow has a slow reloading speed during combat, unlike the pistol.

The maximum amount of ammo Ezio can carry in his quiver is 25 bolts, which are purchasable from blacksmiths. The way the crossbow is fired is similar to the pistol used in Assassin's Creed II, though having a faster aim (equal to the increased aiming speed of the pistol in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood) and having the ability to move around and be on beams while targeting; wherein locking onto an enemy and holding the Armed Hand button causes diamond markings to close in and form a white line as the weapon is aimed. In shops, the cost of a crossbow is 12,800 florins. After purchasing it, you will be able to upgrade the quivers of the crossbow.
Horses are a means of travel in Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

Upon starting your first real assassination quest, the assassination of Tamir, you receive the option to travel across the Kingdom by horseback. Three horses wait outside the gates of Masyaf, and the player can choose to ride whichever horse they prefer.

All of the horses gallop the same speed, but they are all different colors. The horses waiting outside a city all keep the same color when passing through different regions, however, the non-purebred horses change color when passing through different regions. It's unclear why, but the speed and other stats of the horse remain the same when you pass through one region to the next, even if the color does not. Horses outside cities will always be black, white or ginger.

Controls
Assassin's Creed
To control a horse, walk up to it and the player should mount it automatically, if not, press the feet button. Use the feet button to blend when on a horse. While blending only Templars will attack you, and Altaïr can pass regular guards without attracting attention. Pressing only the forward button will make the horse trot, holding the high profile button and forward will make the horse canter. Holding forward, high profile and feet button makes the horse speed up into a gallop. Pressing the attack button while standing still causes the horse to rear, startling nearby civilians. Pressing it while holding high profile draws Altaïr's sword, after which he can attempt to fight NPC's on horseback (feet button sheaths the sword). To jump, simply trot, canter or gallop up to an applicable object and the horse will jump, there is no need to press the feet button.

Assassin's Creed II
Horse gameplay stays exactly the same as in Assassin's Creed, besides the fact that the 'blend' feature is removed. Instead a new 'walk' feature is enabled, allowing the player to pass through crowds without knocking over any civilians. During one mission while riding with Leonardo other guards do actually take to horse back.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, for the first time in any Assassin's Creed game, you can ride a horse inside the city and perform assassinations from horseback. Horseback combat mechanics have been improved, and Ezio will face mounted opponents.

On horseback, Ezio is able to use most weapons, both long and short-ranged, however this excludes any heavy weapons. Ezio can obtain a horse by either calling one with the head button, visiting a stable, or by stealing horses after assassinating or knocking off the guards riding them. Horses can also be used in various types of free-running sequences, such as jumping directly from a horse onto a beam.

Unlike the other games, Brotherhood includes different types of horse. The common horse, heavily laden with saddle bags, can usually be found in the Antico and Campagna Districts, with the guards riding them (possibly messengers) always pushing them into a quick gallop. The standard horse is mostly found in the Centro and Vaticano Districts, and is usually ridden by civilians. The rarest type, the heavily-armored warhorse, can be found in any of Rome's districts, and is always accompanied by an equally well-armored guard riding it. However, despite their varying appearances, these three horses vary little in riding speed.

Moves
Some possible moves are:
* Jumping forward off your horse into a haystack or acrobatic/free running sequence
* Doing a 180 degree turn while rearing
* Kicking out at guards behind you
* Jumping off your horse and attacking someone with the hidden blade
* If you dismount while going high speeds you will dismount by jumping of backward on the backend of the horse.

Beware, if knocked off the horse, it may crush and instantly kill you. After dismounting in battle, the horse may potentially run away, forcing the player to find it again or mount another one. In Assassin's Creed and Assassin's Creed II, only the sword and Eagle Vision can be used while on a horse.

A horse will sometimes follow you if you dismount and are not fighting. Also, if you jump off a horse and fight a group of guards nearby, the horse will rear and kick the enemies, causing them to stumble; though this isn't a fully reliable way to defeat the opponents.
