The apprentices are Assassins who were saved by Ezio Auditore from the rough streets of Rome during the war against the Templars. They have subsequently devoted themselves to learning the ways of the Assassin Order, motivated by their lust for revenge against the Borgia for corrupting the beautiful city of Rome.

Operating out of the Tiber Island headquarters, the apprentices were sent on missions across Europe in order to improve their skills and combat experience beyond their traditional training. However, the apprentices did not always survive these missions. When not on missions assigned by Ezio outside Rome, the apprentices would support the efforts of Ezio and his allies, providing reinforcement during Ezio's own missions.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Recruiting
After destroying a Borgia Tower, symbols will randomly appear on your map where citizens can be recruited. You can choose whether to save them or not but they will eventually die if you don't. After saving a citizen from the guards, you'll have a choice to either speak to them or leave them, if you speak to them they will always join you, if you don't talk to them, they will eventually disappear. You can only recruit twelve apprentices (which can be both male and female), but if one dies, they can always be replaced.

On Field
In-game, Ezio is able to have up to six support him during his missions and each time they fight they will gain experience points to rank up. After recruiting someone for his cause, Ezio sends them to Niccolò Machiavelli to become an Assassin. On the field, Ezio signals these Assassins by raising his arm and clenching his fist, indicating that they should strike. This signal, followed by an eagle's screech, is known as a "B.A.M." or a Brotherhood Assistance Maneuver. The apprentices will appear almost out of nowhere and can even come by horse back and can engage in horse chases.

Missions
During the course of the game, players have the opportunity to send the apprentices to different cities across Europe to complete tasks and assassinations. If they finish the mission, the apprentices earn experience points, but if they die, they will be lost forever. The chances of the Assassins completing the mission depend on how difficult the mission is, the amount of experience the Assassins already have, and how many Assassins you send, however, the more Assassins that you send, the less experience they receive individually.

Customization
Players can also customize the apprentices' colors of their robes. Each one of the apprentices also has a different personality. Later on, players can use the experience points they've gained to upgrade their apprentices' armor and weapons. Once an apprentice achieves rank ten (assassino) his/her armor will change and appear to be more like Ezio's assassin white outfit.

BAM System
If Ezio recruits and trains more apprentices he will gain Signals. Up to 3 signals can be earned. The signals represent the amount of times Ezio can use the BAM system, which makes him call his apprentices to aid him in the field. The first signal is rewared once one assassin apprentice is recruited, then another when you have 4 assassin apprentices. The third and final signal is given once you have 6 assassin apprentices. Once Ezio has used a signal, the token won't be usable until roughly one minute has passed, and using all three of them will not allow Ezio to use the BAM until the first one has recharged. BAM signals can go away once an(y) assassin(s) is/are on a mission, and it will be returned once the assassin(s) returns.

The apprentices are capable of three attack strategies:
*The Arrow Shower: This move is shown when Ezio is blocked by a group of guards. He signals to the apprentices and they shoot arrows at the targets. If there is a large number of apprentices to aid Ezio then all the guards will get killed together. You must have at least six assassin apprentices at your disposal to use the arrow shower, as it takes all 3 signals to use.
*The Air Assassination: This move is where the apprentices jump and assassinate the targets, and if there are some enemies remaining, the apprentices engage them in combat.
*The Smoke Assassination: A combination of air assassinating and smoke bombs, the apprentices jump and assassinate as many enemies as possible, then throw smoke bombs, creating a distraction and allowing Ezio to move in and attack with the help of the apprentices.

Trivia
*While all apprentices wear default uniforms similar to Ezio's, not all of them are ever exactly the same.
*When one of Ezio's apprentices reaches the rank of Assassino (level 10), he or she can wear robes almost identical to Ezio's; as can be seen in the Brotherhood storyline trailer, in which an apprentice now turned assassin wearing is assassin robes and seen performing a Leap of Faith, under the watchful eyes of Ezio and Niccolò.
*The apprentices are equipped with only a single hidden blade, unlike Ezio, but they do aquire a hidden gun, smoke bombs and various melee weapons as they level up.
*Though you can only have twelve apprentices at a time, the ability to recruit them is infinite, which means that, even if many of them die in battle, they can be replaced by finding other citizens to save around Rome. Additionally, there are an equal number of available apprentices to the number of Borgia towers in Rome at any one time and you may recruit one more apprentice per Borgia towers destroyed.
*It seems that the apprentices are able to grab the horse of a dismounted enemy. This prevents its escape, and allows either Ezio or the Assassin himself or herself to ride it.
*Gabriel Graziani, the Community Developer for Brotherhood, has implied that there will be a special cutscene when an Assassin is promoted to the rank of Assassino, as well as if an Assassin dies. Although there is no cut scene for the death of an assassin there is a cut scene when the recruit is promoted to the rank of Assassino.
*Assassins who cover their faces are denoted to a lower rank, as stated by Francesco Vecellio in Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy, however the ones that do are not denoted.
*When managing Assassins for an Assassination contract, even when the odds of success is 100%, sometimes the mission can still be failed, although you will not lose the Assassin(s) used for that contract.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood there are 3 cheats involving the apprentices:
#Beat Sequence 4 with 100% Synch - Sisterhood / Assassin's Guild recruits are all female.
#Beat Sequence 5 with 100% Synch - Ultimate Guild / Assassin's Guild recruits are Assassino rank.
#Beat Sequence 6 with 100% Synch - Calling all Assassins / No cooldown timer when calling Assassins.

The Hidden Gun is one of the expansions of the Hidden Blade invented by Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad using the Apple of Eden. After discovering the design for it on one of the Codex Pages, Leonardo da Vinci managed to craft one for Ezio Auditore in Assassin's Creed II. It consists of a small firearm with a very short barrel attached to the bottom of a Hidden Blade that, if aimed properly, can kill a target from a distance. It is unlocked right after you finish Sequence Eight. The weapon will return in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood in both single and multiplayer.

Usage
The Hidden Gun provides the deadly effectiveness of the Hidden Blade, but at long range. Though an excellent weapon for assassination from afar, it will give away the player's position immediately after firing by creating a loud noise that will alert any guards within the area. The hidden gun takes about a second and a half to fully aim, though it can be fired before it is fully aimed. Firing immediately without aiming is not advised as even at close range the hidden gun still misses more than it hits. At long range it is a must to fully aim at the desired target because otherwise it will miss. Still it is possible to quickly switch to the pistol during a battle, take a random shot from as close as possible to the enemy, get a kill and resume fighting. Though this has its disadvantages, it can be used to quickly eliminate enemies without counter-kills. Also it can be used to kill enemies who don't seem like they will attack any time soon. It should be noted that aiming the Hidden Gun within guards' lines of sight will make them suspicious of the player. Against a few guards, aiming the gun for more than several seconds will also cause the group to lose morale and eventually flee, though this tactic will not be successful on Brutes.

The Hidden Gun does not kill in a single shot during the battles with either Dante Moro and or Rodrigo Borgia, though it is just as effective as usual when the player is required to assassinate them. The Hidden Gun and Throwing Knives are disabled in the Secret Locations that require the player to chase an Agile, as said weapons would allow the player to kill the Agile before the intended time in the course, and would eliminate the entire chase altogether.

Ammunition is quite expensive for the hidden gun, as one bullet costs 175 florins (149 florins in Monteriggioni), which is 3 and a half times the cost of a throwing knife, and only 6 bullets may be carried at one time. However, bullets may be obtained by looting dead soldiers. This makes looting bodies a viable way to stock up on ammunition, especially if one is far away from a blacksmith or out of florins.

In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, you start out with the gun already equipped and a full batch of bullets. It is similar to the hidden gun in Assassins Creed 2 but the aiming device is slightly different. Instead of the white diamonds lining up it resembles a laser and is much faster. Now the hidden gun is also used in a number of counter moves in which the player doesn`t have to aim at all.

Codex Description
"Success! We have found a way to alter the structure of the hidden blade so that it can be used to launch small projectiles. It is capable of grievous damage – even from great distance. I confess, the means by which I came about the discovery was... risky to say the least. But I have found that in small doses, and with a focused mind, the Apple can be used without ill effect. Or so I hope.
The knowledge of projectile combat is not new to us, having been observed amongst our Eastern neighbors. But their weapons were much larger – and insufficient for our needs. I have now found a way to miniaturize their designs, embedding their fiery weapon into a form that can be worn on the wrist.
We have also refined the formula for combustible powder, such that common ingredients might be used. This is a dangerous bit of knowledge and it is best shared with only our closest allies..." -Altaïr in Codex Page 28

Trivia
*Altaïr is the true designer of the Hidden Gun, as Leonardo just decodes his Codex. Altaïr claims that he has invented a smaller version of the weapon his neighbors from the East have, using knowledge from the Apple of Eden. This provides an example of the apple's malevolence; it provided the information he asked for and helped him make a smaller weapon, but provided no information to improve the weapon further, such as for rifles.
*Every time the Hidden Gun is fired, a dog can be heard barking. Though not a surprise as dogs tend to bark at loud noises, no dogs are seen or mentioned in the game.
*Ammunition can be found as an item when searching the bodies of deceased guards despite the fact that they do not carry a firearm.
*The design and physical appearance of the Hidden Gun is similar to the concept of a Pistol Sword, only applied to the Hidden Blade instead.
*In Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines when you connect your PSP to a PS3, you will obtain a variant of the Hidden Gun that fires Throwing Knives instead of lead bullets.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood the Hidden Gun will have the ability to fire poisoned projectiles, such as Poison Darts, by selecting the Poison Blade on the weapon wheel. In doing this, Ezio can aim the Hidden Gun and fire a poisoned dart at the targeted person.
*It is also a multiplayer ability for the multiplayer characters to use.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Ezio will aim the Hidden Gun much faster than in Assassin's Creed II, due to him having much better skill with the weapon now.
*An ammo upgrade can be obtained from Uplay in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, increasing the total capacity to 10.
*The pistol is one of the weapons available to Assassin recruits. Upon reaching level five the recruit unlocks this weapon.
