'''Kesegowaase''' (1730 – 1757) was a {{Wiki|Maliseet|Wolastoqiyik}} member of the [[Colonial Assassins|Colonial branch]] of the [[Assassins|Assassin Order]].

At a young age, he served the [[French Army]] as a mercenary along with other members of his tribe. After meeting the Assassin [[Mentor]] [[Achilles Davenport]], he joined the Colonial Brotherhood. Through Kesegowaase, the Assassins gained allies within nearly every French-aligned tribe.

After the outbreak of the [[French and Indian War]], Achilles tasked Kesegowaase and [[Liam O'Brien]] with eliminating [[George Monro]], an officer in the [[British Army]] and member of the [[Templars|Templar Order]] who held the [[Voynich manuscript|Precursor manuscript]]. In August 1757, Monro surrendered to French and indigenous forces after the [[siege of Fort William Henry]]. Kesegowaase then ordered the natives under his command to massacre the British troops, who had been allowed safe passage from the fort.

Having failed to kill Monro in the massacre, Kesegowaase rallied his men and attacked [[Albany]]. While Liam killed Monro, Kesegowaase fought his former ally, [[Shay Cormac]], and was killed himself.

Kesegowaase was born in 1730 in the territory of the Wolastoqiyik tribe, around modern day {{Wiki|New Brunswick}}. During his youth, he lived in a walled village surrounded by agricultural land, and practiced [[hunting]], fishing and other methods.<ref name="RG">''[[Assassin's Creed: Rogue]]''</ref>

As tensions arose between the [[United Kingdom|British]] and his people, Kesegowaase and other members of his tribe became [[mercenaries]] for the French Army. Around this time, Kesegowaase began corresponding with Achilles Davenport, the Mentor of the Colonial Assassin Brotherhood. He would receive letters through Achilles' protégé, Liam O'Brien.<ref name="RG"/>

In 1746, Kesegowaase met Achilles and Liam as they were fighting for the French on behalf of the Brotherhood. Impressed by Kesegowaase's determination, the two invited him to join the Assassin Order. In 1749, Kesegowaase met Shay Cormac and would serve as one of his instructors. He would also gain the loyalty of warriors from every French-aligned tribe, as well as several trappers, hunters and scouts, providing the Brotherhood with a valuable force.<ref name="RG"/>

In March 1752, Kesegowaase taught Shay the finer points of hunting and how to craft holsters for his pistols, while also criticizing him for his tardiness. Kesegowaase would later meet with his fellow Assassins to discuss the Templars' progress on the [[Precursor boxes|Precursor box]], noting that they had sought information about the artifact from many tribes. Around this time, Kesegowaase also reported that the Templar [[James Wardrop]] had evicted several tribes from their original homes.<ref name="RG"/>

In early 1756, Shay returned from [[Lisbon]], having unintentionally caused an [[1755 Lisbon earthquake|earthquake]] there while attempting to recover a [[Pieces of Eden|Piece of Eden]]. Determined to keep the Assassins away from any Precursor sites, Shay stole the Precursor manuscript in Achilles' possession. With Shay being caught in the act, Kesegowaase and the other Assassins of the [[Davenport Homestead]] attempted to kill the former. Although Shay was eventually cornered, he jumped off a cliff, leading the Assassins to believe him dead.<ref name="RG"/>

The Assassins initially believed the manuscript lost, but learned that it was in the hands of the Templar George Monro. Seeking to take it back, Achilles sent Liam and Kesegowaase after Monro.<ref name="RG"/>

In August 1757, the French Army under [[Louis-Joseph de Montcalm]] and a large force of native warriors under Kesegowaase's command besieged [[Fort William Henry]]. After several days of bombardement, and no sight of reinforcements from [[William Johnson]], the British garrison under the command of Monro surrendered to Montcalm. Thanks to the latter, the British were allowed to surrender while keeping their arms and colors. The natives did not understand the terms of the surrender. Exploiting this, Kesegowaase planned to ambush the British, kill Monro and take the manuscript back.<ref name="RG"/>

On the morning of 10 August, Kesegowaase and the native warriors under his command ambushed Monro's column. However, Shay, now a Templar ally, arrived to rescue Monro and the remainder of his men after being informed of the events by [[Jack Weeks]]. Surprised by Shay's survival, Kesegowaase ordered his men to attack the British soldiers. The column fought off the attackers, and continued onwards to Shay's ship, the ''[[Morrigan]]'', while he scouted ahead eliminated the potential ambushers along the way. As the British boarded the ship, Kesegowaase and his men attempted to follow, but Weeks threw a powder keg at them, while Shay detonated it with a pistol shot. The explosion severely scarred Kesegowaase's face, and his men pulled him away.<ref name="RG"/>

===Attack on Albany===

After learning of Shay's survival and defection to the Templars, Achilles made him a target of the Brotherhood. Having failed to kill Shay and Monro at William Henry, Kesegowaase prepared to attack Albany. He sent his men to threaten the British-aligned [[Oneida]] village of [[Orenda]] in order to acquire an ancient set of native armor and deter them from further assisting the British. In anticipation of the attack, Shay managed to defeat the French troops attacking the British in the area and also liberated the Oneida village from Kesegowaase's men.<ref name="RG"/>

On 3 November, Kesegowaase and his men attacked Albany, plundering the town and attacking the nearby [[Fort Frederick]]. Shay arrived in time to defend the fort from the attacking Assassins, and instructed Monro to take the manuscript to the ''Morrigan'' while he defended Fort Frederick.<ref name="RG"/>

As Liam set off to assassinate Monro and retrieve the manuscript, Kesegowaase infiltrated the fort in order to distract Shay. Shay was able to mortally wound Kesegowaase with a [[Puckle gun]], and after a brief struggle he held the Assassin up against a wall. In his dying words, Kesegowaase scolded Shay for having betrayed the Assassins, and told him that he was too late to save Monro, with Liam already on his way to kill him. As Kesegowaase died, an enraged Shay tried to rescue Monro, but true to the former's word, he was too late.<ref name="RG"/>

==Personality and characteristics==

Having grown up close to nature, Kesegwaase was a stoic individual, keeping a calm demanour at most times and rarely speaking much. Because of his Abenaki roots, Kesegowaase also held a deep respect for nature, reminding Shay not to waste hunting spoils.<ref name="RG"/>

However, Kesegowaase could also be cunning and ruthless. After the British had surrendered at Fort William Henry, Kesegowaase and his men ambushed and massacred them, breaking the terms of the surrender. Afterwards, he sent his men to hold an Oneida village hostage in order to dissuade the Oneida from supporting the British and also to acquire a set of ancient armor. During their attack on Albany, his men pillaged the town. Despite the brutality of Kesegowaase's actions, his fellow Assassins did not intervene, believing them necessary towards the completion of their goals.<ref name="RG"/>

Kesegowaase strongly believed in the Assassin cause, obeying Achilles without question. Upon learning of Shay's defection to the Templars, he was determined to kill him. Even in the face of death, Kesegowaase attempted to attack Shay, scolding him for his betrayal and mockingly insinuating Monro's imminent death.<ref name="RG"/>

Even before joining the Assassins, Kesegowaase was highly skilled in hunting and fishing, as well as other survival methods. He had also gained experience from working as a scout and mercenary for the French, and was a skilled [[Freerunning|freerunner]], navigating the trees of North America with ease. He was also capable of performing the traditional Assassin's [[Leap of Faith]].<ref name="RG"/>

Kesegowaase's Assassin outfit consisted of traditional Abenaki clothing, and he wore a buckskin leather hood and shawl adorned with [[feathers]]. He also wore leather boots and a red Assassin sash, as well as red face paint. Kesegowaase was equipped with at least one [[Hidden Blade]], and was capable of various assassination techniques. In combat, he wielded a [[Tomahawks|tomahawk]] and a [[Firearms|pistol]] with great skill, making him a highly dangerous opponent.<ref name="RG"/>

The '''Colonial Rite of the Templar Order''' was, prior to the [[American Revolutionary War]], one of a number of autonomous factions in operation during the mid 18th century that composed the [[Templars|Templar Order]]. [[Haytham Kenway]] officially founded, and became the first [[Grand Master]] of the Colonial Rite in 1754, in order to find a suspected [[Grand Temple|Precursor storehouse]], on instruction of the Templar Grand Master of the [[United Kingdom|British]] [[British Rite of the Templar Order|Rite]], [[Reginald Birch]].

The Colonial Rite played a significant role in guiding the course of the American Revolution, with an aim to usurp control of the newly forming nation. However, the Templars' plans were ultimately disrupted by the reformed [[Colonial Assassins]], and in particular, the Assassin [[Ratonhnhaké:ton]].

==History==
===Pre-formation===
In 1738, British Templar [[Lawrence Washington]] was named by his Grand Master, Reginald Birch, as Master Templar of the British colonies in the New World, and tasked with locating the Grand Temple and other [[Isu|First Civilization]] relics. Once in the New World, Washington recruited a number of members into the Order, such as [[Samuel Smith]] and [[William Johnson]], and also made contact with the famed explorer [[Christopher Gist]]. His goal was to secure the colonies with the development of trading and establishing good relations with natives.<ref name="ACRG">''[[Assassin's Creed: Rogue]]''</ref>

In 1750, Birch sent the Templar agent [[George Monro]] to assist Washington in his search for the Temple. A year later, after the [[1751 Port-au-Prince earthquake|earthquake]] of [[Port-au-Prince]], the Templar took two relics from the [[Haitian Assassins]], the [[Precursor boxes|Precursor box]] and the [[Voynich manuscript]]. In 1752, Washington passed the two artifacts to Samuel Smith and [[James Wardrop]], before being killed by the Assassin [[Shay Cormac]].<ref name="ACRG"/>

Afterward, Wardrop took over as the ''de facto'' head of the Templars in the colonies, while Smith traveled to [[Europe]] in order to find a scientist who could understand how to work the box. In 1754, following his return to America, Smith was killed by Shay Cormac, who claimed the box for the Assassins. That same year, during the Congress of Albany, the Templars came in contact with [[Benjamin Franklin]], who could make the two artifacts work, but Shay Cormac killed Wardrop before he could pass the manuscript over to Johnson.<ref name="ACRG"/>

===Founding===
In August 1754, Haytham arrived in [[Boston]], and was greeted by [[Charles Lee]], a hopeful wishing to join the Templar Order. With Charles' help, Haytham sought to gather four individuals that Reginald Birch had arranged for Haytham to recruit: William Johnson, [[Thomas Hickey]], [[Benjamin Church]], and [[John Pitcairn]].<ref name="AC3">''[[Assassin's Creed III]]''</ref>

With the outbreak of the [[French and Indian War]], the British Government had arranged for General [[Edward Braddock]], another member of the Templar Order and a former acquaintance of Kenway's, to lead an [[Braddock Expedition|expedition]] to the French-controlled [[Fort Duquesne]]. In order to enlist the aid of the [[Kanien'kehá:ka]], whom it was believed knew the location of the Precursor site, Haytham willingly agreed to side with them in their ambush of Braddock's forces. Later, Haytham officially established the Colonial Rite of Templar Order with his fellow brothers, and inducted Charles Lee in their rank.<ref name="AC3"/>

The combined assault by Haytham's Rite and the Kanien'kehá:ka, together with a timely assault by the [[French Army]], led to the destruction of the expedition, and the death of Edward Braddock at Haytham's hands. True to her word, [[Kaniehtí:io]], the Kanien'kehá:ka whom Haytham had agreed their alliance, led the Grand Master to the Precursor site, though the latter was disappointed to find little more than a cave.<ref name="AC3"/>

===Purge of the Colonial Assassins===
By 1759, the Colonial Rite was in full conflict with the Assassin Brotherhood in the region. When Shay Cormac defected to the Templar Order during the [[Seven Years' War]], the Templars focused on hunting down the Assassins with Shay's help, eliminating several high-ranking members of the Brotherhood, such as [[Hope Jensen]], [[Kesegowaase]], and [[Louis-Joseph Gaultier, Chevalier de la Vérendrye|Chevalier de la Vérendrye]]. Shay also managed to eliminate a member of the [[Caribbean Assassins|Caribbean branch]] of the Order, [[Adéwalé]], who was working closely with Achilles and his allies.<ref name="ACRG"/>

Tracking the remaining two Assassins – [[Liam O'Brien]] and the [[Mentor]] [[Achilles Davenport]] – to a First Civilization [[Temples|Temple]] in the [[Arctic Temple|Arctic]], Shay manage to secure the death of Liam, while Haytham bested Achilles Davenport in a sword fight and forced him into exile, on the condition that the Mentor retired from his search of the Precursor sites. Achilles agreed, but as a mean of insurance, Haytham crippled him with a shot to the leg.<ref name="ACRG"/>

In 1760, a group of Templars led by Lee assaulted a young Kanien'kehá:ka boy named Ratonhnhaké:ton, who unknown to them was the son of Haytham and Kaniehtí:io. They asked him for the location of his village, so that they could speak to the natives about the Grand Temple; stubbornly, the boy told them nothing, and was knocked out. After the village was burned by [[George Washington]], Ratonhnhaké:ton believed Lee and his cohorts to be responsible.<ref name="AC3"/>

Finally giving up their search for the Grand Temple, the Templars focused on strengthening their influence in the colonies. In 1763, the Colonial Rite launched an attack on the [[Davenport Homestead]], which served as a base of operations for the remaining Colonial Assassins. Killing those who remained, the Templars once again spared Achilles' life when he agreed to cease all Assassin activities in the colonies. When, in 1773, revolutionary fever begun to grip the [[United States|Thirteen Colonies]], the Templars attempted to influence both sides, in order to achieve their desired outcome and maintain the status quo.<ref name="AC3"/>

Unknown to the Templars, however, was that the Colonial Assassins had begun to rebuild; Ratonhnhaké:ton, the illegitimate son of Haytham Kenway, had begun his training with Achilles Davenport. With the deaths of William Johnson, who had sought to purchase land from the native tribes, in 1774, and John Pitcairn, a British officer who had hoped to end the budding Revolutionary War before it truly begun, in 1775, the Templars' were powerless to prevent all out civil war.<ref name="AC3"/>

Despite this, the Templars still hoped to control the conflict, by operating within the ranks of both factions. Eventually however, following the assassinations of [[Nicholas Biddle]], Thomas Hickey, and Benjamin Church – who was killed by Haytham Kenway, in alliance with Ratonhnhaké:ton, for betraying the Templars – the Rite's plans begun to falter.<ref name="AC3"/>

In 1781, after cutting ties with his father, Ratonhnhaké:ton, seeking out Charles Lee, was confronted by Haytham in the Templar stronghold at [[Fort George]], [[New York]]. After a brutal fight, the Templar Grand Master was killed, and Charles Lee rose to hold the position in his stead.<ref name="AC3"/>

At least three months later, in 1782, a funeral was held for Kenway and presided over by Charles Lee, but it was interrupted with the arrival of Ratonhnhaké:ton. Charles had the Assassin detained, before making preparations to travel to Boston. Eventually, the Assassin caught up with Lee once more, and after a rugged pursuit, tracked the man down and killed him in Conestoga Inn, [[Monmouth]]. Lee's death marked the collapse of the Colonial Rite, and the end of Templar influence in [[North America]], for a time.<ref name="AC3"/>
