The intro page has it that shanties wer sung by Pirates, not much historical evidence for that. the oldest shanty is rekoned to be "Cheerly Man" a hauling (puilling on ropes ) song.. Piracy's golden age was from the 1670's - 1740's. After that Royal Navy was too powerful and a better bet for adventure. The game was not to sink but to capture then sell the enemy ships, all the crew got a share in the profis, legalised Piracy in effect ( discover the story of the Centurion, chased around the world and sold in Macao, the film Master and Commander is loosely based on the story). The shanties on AC4 are late 18th and early to mid 19th century, shanties started to die out from the 1860s on as steam power took over, it p;robaly surviived longest in the oldest ships, the ones that hadn't got steam powered gear. Doerflinger, Carpenter and Hugill were the key collectors of shanties.Doerflinger got most of his shanties in the USA, Madison Carpenter never publsihed his work, Huguill was the last to do so, getting a lot of his material from old sailors who had been active in the 1890s to the 1920s. Many of the songs have African American rhythms and phrases because Merchant marine work was open to African Americans after the Civil War. Another route in was from Vaudeville and black face minstrelsy. Ned Harrigan was the most popular songwriter of the 1880s, originally he worked on ships, he made a fortune form the New York Theatres, some say he invented Braodway. At least one of his songs "Get Up Jack John Sit Down", escaped into the real world and was "collected " by Alan Lomax in the 1940s form fishermen in the East Coast fo the USA who thought it was an original shanty. Theya re great fun to sing, no matter when and by whom they were written.

How does I know this stuff? I sang with Hugill, sung on a few ships, .. made a few shanty albums myself, check out the bands: Jenkins Ear and Warp Four......
Should individual pages with each shanty's lyrics be created? Ozaren21 (talk) 18:02, November 10, 2013 (UTC)
No, they can be contained in tabber templates. Slate Vesper (talk) 03:09, November 11, 2013 (UTC)

Some of the Lyrics don't seem to match up with the version sung in the game. Most of them or fine, but songs like Old Billy Riley need lyrics that match up with the song in the game. (Toolen (talk) 21:29, December 9, 2013 (UTC))

The lyrics match up with the shanty lyrics shown in the Animus database, rather than those sung by the crew. It seems about right for the crew to improvise from what they know rather stay strict to the song entirely, so the database would be the correct source in my opinion. == What evidence is there that "Goodbye Johnny Bell" is a song in the game? ==

I can't find any. I added lyrics for the others that were missing them. Oh, and if it matters, "The Maid of Amsterdam" (AC Initiates song) is titled that way in the game, with the "The" and sorted under the T's like the other "The" titles.
