Gaius Julius Caesar (13 July 100 BC - 15 March 44 BC) was the general of the Roman army and a politician. He critically transformed the Roman Republic into the seemingly unstoppable Roman Empire.

Julius Caesar won many battles in his role as the general of the Roman army, and conquered the Gallic tribes throughout Europe and being the great nemesis of Vercingetorix, in which he defeated his enemy at one of his most famous conquests the Battle of Alesia.

Julius Caesar, being a great politician and general, was feared by other senators for his power as a dictator for life. His close friend Marcus Junius Brutus led the conspiracy against Caesar alongside Gaius Cassius Longinus, who were secretly Assassins. His murder was planned on the Ides of March (March 15) in which the conspirators were successful with his murder, but Caesar's death seemed to bring more chaos than before. Caesar was stabbed 23 times by the conspirators, and his heir Octavian (Augustus) became the next emperor of Rome.

Trivia
*There is a trophy for the PlayStation 3 in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood named after Julius Caesar. It is earned by gaining all other trophies, 50 in total. Also the Dagger of Brutus, which was used by Marcus Brutus to kill Caesar, can also be obtained in the game.
*Julius Caesar's known murderers were Marcus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus, Servius Sulpcicius Galba, Quintus Ligarias, Lucius Minucius Basilus, Publius Servilius Casca Longus, Gaius Servilius Casca, Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus, Lucius Tillius Cimber, Gaius Trebonius, Lucius Cassius Longinus, Gaius Cassius Parmensis, Caecilius, Bucolianus, Rubrius Ruga, Marcus Spurius, Publius Sextius Naso, Lucius Pontius Aquila, Petronius, Decimus Turullius and Pacuvius Antistius Labeo.
We simply came... before.
Those Who Came Before, also known as the First Civilization, were an ancient and advanced species on Earth who created the Pieces of Eden, as well as the Human race itself. Exactly who they were, where they came from and when they disappeared is largely unknown. With early humans unable to comprehend the First Civilization for what they truly were, they were viewed upon as gods. However, when Ezio asks Minerva if she was a god, she chuckles and replies "We simply came before."
Knowledge
Though various religious beliefs seem to have been based on aspects and misinterpretations of Those Who Came Before, their existence was largely unknown to humanity. As early as the 12th Century, both the Assassins and the Knights Templar knew that the focus of human religions, the Gods, did not truly exist, and that miracles and other supernatural were simply manifestations of the powers of the Pieces of Eden; devices created by Those Who Came Before to control the Human race. However, it is unclear if the Assassins and Templars understood the origin of the Pieces at that time. By the 15th century, at least one Templar, Rodrigo Borgia, was aware of the existence, if not the nature, of Those Who Came Before; he mistakenly believed that The Vault underneath the Sistine Chapel housed a living God.

The first known instance of a human becoming aware of their existence following their disappearance was that of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, who made mention of them in his Codex. However, it would not be until the year 1499 that humanity would first "meet" Those Who Came Before; Ezio Auditore da Firenze, an Assassin, encountered a hologram of a being calling herself Minerva in The Vault. While Ezio likely told his fellow Assassins of Minerva, it is possible they still did not understand her true nature; Ezio showed great difficulty in understanding Minerva's explanation of her existence.

By 2012, the Templars in Abstergo Industries had a sizeable understanding of the true nature of Those Who Came Before. Whether they learned this information through the use of the Animus or had found evidence of it earlier is unknown. However, none of the Assassins seen in this time period indicated that they had previous knowledge of the existence of Those Who Came Before.

History
Creation
We built you in our own image, we built you to survive.

The origin of the First Civilization are unclear; Minerva simply stated that they "came before". They were however, responsible for the creation of humanity, creating them in their own image to be a docile workforce. Research by Subject 16 seemed to suggest that Those Who Came Before radically altered the genetic make-up of a pre-existing species on the planet to create humanity, leaving a sizeable gap in terms of transitional species between archaic hominids and modern humans. By 1997, the Templars had taken note of this and arranged for fake skeletons to be planted in Ethiopia, so as to limit human exposure to the possibility of the existence of Those Who Came Before.

Control of humanity was assured through use of the Pieces of Eden, which tapped into a neuro-transmitter located deep within the human brain. However, there were humans who born without the neuro-transmitter, and could subsequently live without being influenced by the First Civilization through such means.

War
Eventually, despite humanity and the First Civilization living in peace for some time, war broke out. Possibly the result of at least two immune individuals stealing a Piece of Eden from their masters. The fate of these two &ndash; Adam and Eve &ndash; following their attempt is unknown, however humanity and Those Who Came Before soon found themselves at war with each other. While Those Who Came Before were more technologically advanced and powerful, humanity had the advantage of numbers.

Somehow, the Piece's of Eden had lost their ability to influence humanity, whether it be through deactivation or by natural immunity building up within the Human race, remains unknown.

Catastrophe
The war did eventually end, although with casualties greater than the First Civilization could have ever anticipated. The distraction of war had blinded them to all else, and their preoccupation prevented them from seeing the signs of an impending danger from the "heavens"; by the time they had noticed it, it was too late. Shaun Hastings and Lucy Stillman later hypothesized that this "danger" could have been a massive solar flare, that had flipped the Earth's weakening magnetic field, reversing the polarity and making the planet geologically unstable. This hypothesis was supported by evidence found by Subject 16;

*"Near the day of purification, there will be cobwebs spun back and forth in the sky. - Hopi"
*"A container of ashes might one day be thrown from the sky, which could burn the land and boil the oceans. - Hopi"
*"They died in the fire from the heavens."
*"75ka was not a volcano."

Aftermath
Both races survived the catastrophe, however, few of either species remained. Working together, they rebuilt their world, though humanity continued to view Minerva's kind as Gods. Despite their survival, Those Who Came Before were unable to fully recover and began heading toward extinction. They knew however, that the catastrophe that had burned their world before would eventually reoccur and took steps to prevent it. Recording a holographic, yet interactive, message to serve as a warning to those who entered the Vault. In it, Minerva warned of the impending doom, and spoke of the Temples that could save Earth from destruction, built by those who "knew to turn away from war".

Delivering their message to the Assassin Desmond Miles, who was viewing the memories of his ancestor Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Minerva warned that time was short, and that "the Cross" would stand in their way. With the deliverance of that message, the last vestiges of the First Civilization died away, the Gods had become extinct.

Characteristics
The First Civilization were a technologically advanced and powerful race, who seemed to possess precognitive abilities; either natural or technological. This was proven when Minerva told Ezio within the The Vault that he was simply a conduit and spoke directly to the invisible Desmond Miles, who was viewing his ancestor's memories. Furthermore, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad mentioned in the Codex that his Piece of Eden not only possessed a catalog of past events, but also future events, implying that the Pieces contain predictions made by Those Who Came Before.

Those Who Came Before also have connections with many of Earth's religions, and likely influenced their developments directly. During her warning to Desmond, Minerva made mention of her former names, as well of those of her; Menrva, Uni and Tinia, who were later became known as Minerva, Juno and Jupiter, respectively. The former names correspond to the Etruscan Triad of Deities, while the latter are the names of their Roman counterparts, who make up the Capitoline Triad. This shift in names may be indicative why various religions have numerous similarities, as they are all based on the story of Those Who Came Before.

Legacy
They're gifts, Mr. Miles. From those who came before.
Despite the mark they left behind on Earth, the First Civilization faded into obscurity rapidly after their decline; the inability of humans to comprehend their creators as anything but Gods did however allow their names at least, to live on. The lack of evidence for their existence did not prevent all humans from learning about them however, and by the 21st Century the Knights Templar had a limited understanding of the nature of those who had lived before. Indeed, the technology used to view the genetic memories of ones ancestor &ndash; the Animus &ndash; was based off of technology utilised by the First Civilization.

The Templars also knew of the existence of the Pieces of Eden, and believed them to be gifts left behind by the First Civilization for them to utilise. Ironically however, this situation was a significant contrast to the situation in the 15th Century, where it had been the Assassins who knew explicitly of the existence of Those Who Came Before, whilst the Templar Grand Master Rodrigo Borgia merely believed the Vault to be the location of God himself. This changed however, and five hundred years later, the Order of Assassins knew nothing of the First Civilization's existence.

Bloodline
The mysterious individual known only as Subject 16 at one point theorised that the true reason behind the abilities of some Assassins was genetic, suggesting a lineage including both human and creator blood. 16's own genetic memories indicated him to be a direct descendant of both Adam and Eve, suggesting that his bloodline, if not many more, would all have access to these abilities. Indeed, Subject 16, Altaïr, Ezio and Desmond Miles all possessed Eagle Vision, while Ezio and Altaïr both showed themselves resistant to the effects of the Apple. In addition, Ezio was able to use the Staff and the Apple to open The Vault, while Rodrigo Borgia could not, and Altaïr had previously used the Apple to enlighten the people of Cyprus to Armand Bouchart's lies.

Trivia
*Though they play an important part in the plot of Assassin's Creed II, Those Who Came Before are first mentioned by Warren Vidic in Assassin's Creed. When talking to Desmond, Vidic claims that Abstergo is responsible for all major human technological advances in history, though he denies that the Templars invented them, calling them "gifts...from Those Who Came Before."
*It seems that not all of the history of them was lost to the Greeks and Romans, who still worshipped them, but as Deities. When monotheism (the belief in one god or deity) came about it became farther from the truth.
*Minerva has the same hue of eye colour as Desmond, Altair and Ezio, implying that the afore mentioned assassins could have some kind of blood connection to 'Those Who Came Before'.

Eagle Vision is an ability of both Ezio and Altaïr to instinctively sense the affiliation of people to themselves. It is a common game mechanic in both games. Sometimes, Eagle Vision not only "colors" people, but also objects that may help either characters' objectives and endeavors.

Assassin's Creed
It is a first-person view in Assassin's Creed. It changes the camera's point of view to that of Altaïr, and uses different color glows to distinguish for the player between different classes of NPCs:

General Civilians<br />(No specific color glow)

<p style="text-align:center">*Note: There is a Masyaf guard in the kingdom (nearby the first view point and the entrance to Masyaf) that shows red, but does nothing hostile, and should you kill him, the other guards will react normally.</p>

To use Eagle Vision, the player must press the Head button. Depending on control settings, the Head button will most likely be either (for Playstation 3), Y (for Xbox 360), or E (for PC default layout). In addition, the Synchronization bar must be at its current maximum capacity, otherwise pressing the Head button will instead result in a first-person view with no extra benefits.

When Altaïr climbs to the top of a View Point, he must press the Head button to view his surroundings and update the map. Once doing so, Altaïr could only view with Eagle Vision when perched on the Viewpoint.

At the end of Assassin's Creed, after Altaïr (controlled by Desmond) kills Al Mualim, Desmond gains the ability to use Eagle Vision outside of the Animus. In addition, observes Lucy glowing blue, confirming her as an ally and Warren Vidic can be seen glowing red, confirming him as an enemy. Invisible writing and pictures also appear in a red when in Eagle Vision from Subject 16's blood.

Assassin's Creed II
In Assassin's Creed II, Ezio can also use the Eagle Vision like his ancestor. A key difference of the abilities is that Ezio can move while using the ability in exchange of the glow of the NPC character(s) not retaining once Eagle Vision is inactive. The HUD disappears while using the ability and it will be a third-person view.

Like the previous game, invisible writing and now Glyphs can be viewed, along with the the mass of swirling numbers and symbols that accompany Glyphs.

In one of Subject 16's truth files entitled Bloodlines, you must pick out the paintings that contain humans that have had children with gods. After you do this, Subject 16 says, "Behold the Assassins, the children of two worlds!" He also says, "Why do we have these gifts? Because it's in our blood!" This implies that because Altaïr, Ezio, Desmond and Subject 16 all have Eagle Vision, their bloodline is connected to one of Those Who Came Before.
I know... in fact, the entire city knows!

Malik Al-Sayf is the leader of the Jerusalem Assassin's Bureau. One of the first assassins you meet in Solomon's Temple, he is a harsh, yet wise assassin who envies Altaïr due to his skill and rank in the guild. At first, his devotion to the Creed and Al Mualim is unbreakable and undeniable, yet he slowly gains a respect for Altaïr as he changes on his quest to redeem himself.

History
Solomon's Temple
Malik, along with his brother Kadar and Altaïr, was charged with capturing the Templar's Treasure, later found to be the Piece of Eden by Al Mualim. He forewarns Altaïr of his blatant disregard of the Creed when Altaïr murders an innocent old man beneath the Temple to hide their presence and considers compromising the Brotherhood for the chance to kill Robert de Sable. Eventually, Altaïr's stubbornness, headstrong attitude, and arrogance leads to the tragic failure of the mission, costing Malik his left arm and his brother's life. Malik however successfully escaped with the Piece of Eden, and arrived at Masyaf with his arm still attached but bleeding badly, implying it was amputated later.

Jerusalem: 1st Visit
When first meeting up with Altaïr in Jerusalem, Malik makes no effort to disguise his newfound hatred of Altaïr. Pointing out even the most subtle of flaws and the small haughtiness of his attitude whenever possible, the two have an unpleasant meeting when discussing the assassination of Talal. Even though the assassination was a success, he criticizes Altaïr for triggering the City Alarm and alerting the citizens of Jerusalem to Talal's demise.

Jerusalem: 2nd Visit
Though his cold attitude toward Altaïr has gone through little to no changes, he expresses a small level of satisfaction when Altaïr asks for advice and begins to respect the Creed more. After the assassination, he notes that Altaïr had performed just as an assassin should -- no more, no less. When Altaïr says, "It seems everything I do troubles you," Malik suggests snidely for him to "Reflect on that. But do so on your way to Masyaf."

Jerusalem: 3rd Visit
When Altaïr visits Malik for the final time in Jerusalem, the easily angered and quick to criticize Malik has changed, speaking to Altaïr as a fellow assassin rather than the failure that had caused the tragedy in Solomon's Temple. After the skirmish at the funeral of Majd Addin, Malik and Altaïr have a quick, heated argument over whether to chase Robert de Sable to Arsuf or return to Masyaf to seek the wisdom of Al Mualim. Altaïr argues that Malik uses the Creed as a shield, not seeing the entire truth but rather what Al Mualim wants him to see, and then suggests that Malik learns more of the Piece of Eden from the people of Jerusalem and Al Mualim while he hunts down Robert. Before their departure, Altaïr apologizes for his failure at Solomon's Temple, which Malik refuses because he feels that the Altaïr who stands before him at that moment is not the same one that had sparked the defeat at Solomon's Temple.

Masyaf
Malik makes his final appearance at Masyaf, aiding Altaïr in fending off the hypnotized assassins with loyal assassins still unaffected by the Piece of Eden. He then leads an assault at the back of the fortress, going on advice given from Altaïr as he personally deals with Al Mualim. His final appearance before the end of the Memory Block was at the revealing of the other locations of the Piece of Eden, where he catches up to Altaïr.

After Assassin's Creed
At some point after the events of Assassin's Creed, Malik became the right hand man of Altaïr while he was the leader of the assassins. Altaïr mentions in the first codex page that Malik suggested that he should forget about trying to understand the Piece of Eden and that he should simply lock it away. Altaïr seemingly ignored this advice as shown in later codex entries.

It is unknown whether Malik left the Middle East or married and had children as Altaïr did. If Malik indeed fathered a child after the events of Assassin's Creed, it would be interesting to see if any of his descendants are still Assassins in modern times. &nbsp; One possible descendant could be Lucy, who aids Desmond throughout both games.

Trivia
*Malik is the only Assassin seen wearing a similar outfit to Altaïr's in Assassin's Creed. In this outfit, he is also equipped with a hidden blade though his ring finger was not cut, probably due to the inaccuracy of the character design.
