The '''Sentinel''' (real name: '''[[Vali cel Tradat]]''') was an Animi Avatar used by [[Abstergo Industries]] to train the recruits in the second stage of their Animi Training Program. His specialty weapon was a [[Multiplayer Weapons#Katar|long katar]].

The sentinel is unlocked by either killing him in single player or by pre- ordering the game.

==Description==
Previously a member of the Assassin Order until his defection, the Sentinel kills for the Templars in order to gain revenge for the truce bartered between the Assassins and the [[Ottoman Empire]], the same faction which had invaded his home country and humiliated his secret role model, [[Vlad Tepes]].

The Sentinel silently walks up to his victim from behind, before placing his arm on his victim's shoulder and forcing them to the floor to his right. Before his target can get up he unsheathes his katar and impales their spine, leaving them incapacitated and bleeding to death.

The Sentinel runs up to his target and puts one leg next to their leg and pushes them to the floor. Now they are at a disadvantage the Sentinel gets out his katar and impales the victim's heart, and leaves them on the floor, dead.

The Sentinel has his katar in hand, he runs up behind his contract, puts his arm under his victims arm, twist them around, whilst pulling back the opponents arm, he then flips his target over his weapon, thus slicing his contract's neck as he pushes them to the ground.

The Sentinel grabs his seated target's foot and drags them off the bench, until their head rests against it. Before his victim can do anything to defend themselves, the Sentinel forcefully kicks them in the face, violently sending their head backwards and breaking his target's neck on the bench behind them.

As the Sentinel jumps off from the building, he lands over his victim with his katar in his hand, he then stabs his unfortunate target in their chest, piercing their heart before getting up and setting his weapon back into its holster, leaving his dead contract.

After her actions of swindling the poor out of their money, many of her fellow Romani complained and attempted to remove her. These actions soon caught the aattention of an apprentice of Ezio Auditore, who immediately informed him as soon as they were appointed as a den leader. The apprentice asked Ezio to escort a Romani to Mirela, and protect her. Despite many of Mirela's hitmen that had been sent, Ezio killed them all. When they arrived Mirela was already having a conversation with other Romani, one of which chastised her for being a trickster and a charlatan. After a futile attempt to calm her, Mirela responds by poisoning her and framing the murder to look like the other Romanies did it. While Ezio stopped the nearby guards from killing them, his apprentice ran after Mirela hoping to kill her, but to no avail.

Ezio discovered Manuel was working for the Templars in [[Cappadocia]], and went to the underground city to locate the Templar. While in Cappadocia, Ezio discovered that the Templars had an army stationed there, and that Manuel's lieutenant, [[Shahkulu]], was torturing Ottoman spies. Ezio assassinated Shahkulu, and then chased after Manuel who fled and called for his [[guards]]. However, Ezio caught Manuel later and the two fought, with Ezio eventually killing Manuel.

In his final words, Manuel expressed his desire to be Byzantine emperor, and said he had devised many plans for the position. Ezio responded by saying that his empire was already dead and that Manuel's desire was only a dream. However, Manuel believed that his dream was also that of the Templars dream, which was of universal order and peace. Manuel gave the Assassin the [[Keys of Altaïr|key]] he held to [[Altaïr's library]], but advised Ezio he could be killed before he even open the secret library.

With Sef and Malik out of the way, Abbas was the only one left with the most power in the Order and implemented a council into the Order with himself as its head. Eventually, he also disbanded the council, usurping the title of Mentor and becoming the sole leader of the Syrian Assassins.

Under Abbas' leadership, the Order declined and became corrupted. Additionally, Abbas spent the majority of his time hiding in Masyaf's fortress, fearing for his life. Eventually, the Assassins joined Altaïr once again, and Abbas was killed.

Ahmad's life was traded for that of Umar, on request of Umar himself, and the Saracens executed Umar. Ahmad, feeling guilt of Umar's death, killed himself in Umar and his son Altaïr's quarters; however, Abbas was brought up to believe that his father had left the Order, to eventually return.<ref name="The Secret Crusade"/>

Abbas was paired with Altaïr and together they began their training to become an Assassin under Al Mualim. The two boys developed a close friendship, eventually being constantly by one another's side and referring to each other as brothers, though the thought of his father's self-imposed exile was never far from his mind.<ref name="The Secret Crusade"/>

After some time, Altaïr began to notice a change in Abbas' mood, with the strain of his father's disappearance beginning to wear him down. In the hopes that it would give him some peace, Altaïr informed Abbas that his father had not deserted Abbas as he had thought, but that he had actually committed suicide in Altaïr's chambers not long after the Saracen siege. Abbas refused to believe him, and simply turned around in his bed, silent.<ref name="The Secret Crusade"/>

During combat training the next day, he requested their instructor [[Labib]] to use real swords, which was accepted. However, instead of doing the normal training, he attacked Altaïr in a burst of hatred, demanding to know why he had lied. Following these events, neither of the two considered the other a brother. When Abbas was 16 years old, Masyaf was attacked by the Templars, due to an [[Crusader|agent]] infiltrating the order. Abbas joined his fellow Assassins in battle against the Templars. When Altaïr arrived, Abbas met up with him and told him they needed to fall back and that they could do nothing for Al Mualim, who the Templars took hostage. However, Altaïr ordered Abbas to flank the Templars once they were driven from the castle by him, though Abbas protested against this idea.<ref name="Revelations">''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations]]''</ref>

Altaïr was eventually successful in saving Al Mualim,<ref name="Revelations"/> after which Altaïr was leveled to the rank of [[Master Assassin]]. This event was the first sign of Altaïr's arrogance, which would over time further fuel Abbas' hatred for Altaïr.

Altaïr carried Al Mualim's body through the shocked crowd of Masyaf, and eventually lay Al Mualim's body on a pile of wood on a cliffside. As Altaïr lit the body on fire, Abbas confronted him, saying that burning a man's body is forbidden. In his defense, Altaïr said that the body could be "another one of Al Mualim's phantoms" and that he could not return. Angry, Abbas shoved Altaïr off the cliff, who was confronted by angry citizens and Assassins.<ref name="Revelations"/>

Abbas somehow obtained the Apple of Eden from Al Mualim's study, and climbed to the top of the watchtower right outside the fortress. He activated the Apple, but realized it was too much for his mind to bear, and the life was slowly being drained from his body and was also affecting several Assassins in the area. Altaïr had climbed up the tower and took the Apple from Abbas, after which he muttered an apology to Altaïr while falling to the ground.<ref name="Revelations"/>

Not too soon later, Altaïr gained full support of the other members of the Order, and became the Mentor of the Syrian Assassins, to Abbas' displease. However, his new-found hatred for his late mentor surpassed even his hatred for Altaïr.<ref name="The Secret Crusade"/>

Abbas continued to serve the Assassins during the events that followed, well into Altaïr's reign as Mentor. However, following Altaïr's departure for the Far East in 1217, he slowly begun to build up support among the populace to undermine the rule of the Order's acting-Master and second-in-command; Malik Al-Sayf. In 1225, he struck.<ref name="The Secret Crusade"/>

Abbas commanded his subordinate [[Swami]], a weak-minded [[Apprentices|Apprentice]], to murder Sef Ibn-La'Ahad, the youngest son of Altaïr, then pin the blame on Malik. As a result, Malik was imprisoned and an acting Council took over, in accordance with the tenets of [[the Creed]], with Abbas at its head.<ref name="The Secret Crusade"/>

Two years later, in 1227, Altaïr, his wife [[Maria Ibn-La'Ahad|Maria]], and their eldest son, [[Darim Ibn-La'Ahad|Darim]], returned from their ten year journey to the Far East, unaware of the events that had transpired in their absence. Arriving at the fortress, the aging Mentor was informed that his son, Sef, had departed for [[Alamut]] not long before their arrival. Darim left for Alamut immediately, and the next day Altaïr and Maria met with Abbas and the ruling Council.<ref name="The Secret Crusade"/>

During the meeting, Abbas informed the Mentor that Sef had been murdered by Malik just one month before, and that the Council had been set up following his arrest. Altaïr demanded that the council turn over command of the Order to him, though Abbas refused. Abbas refused claiming that Altaïr was impartial since his son had just been murdered and he might act out of vengeance.<ref name="The Secret Crusade"/>

The next day, after Altaïr learned the true circumstances surrounding his son's death. He then went into the dungeons to see Malik and in order to see what was going on. Seeing that Malik was in an extremely bad state he left him in the care of his family. He decided to confront Abbas again, but he managed to turn the Assassins against Altaïr after he accused him of killing Malik out of vengeance, showing Malik's decapitated head in public as proof. However in reality he had been killed by Swami on Abbas' orders. Following a brief struggle, which resulted in the death of both Swami and Maria, Altaïr fled from Masyaf, and Abbas assumed the title of Mentor.<ref name="The Secret Crusade"/>

Twenty years passed before Abbas once again had to deal with Altaïr. During his reign, the Assassin retreated into their fortress, leaving the surrounding countryside to the mercy of [[Fahad]]'s bandits. He imposed increasingly severe levies on the local civilians, and took severe action against any uprising and dissent, like that which followed Altaïr's escape in 1227. In the year 1247, Abbas learned that Altaïr had returned, intent on reclaiming his position. With the help of Malik's son, Altaïr gained help from his fellow Assassins against Abbas. Altaïr made stress of the fact that no blood was to be spilled this day and because of that, most of Abbas's supporting forces joined Altaïr.<ref name="The Secret Crusade"/>

After a brief power struggle, which saw most of the Order return their allegiances to Altaïr, Abbas confronted the eighty-two-year-old Assassin on the steps of the Masyaf fortress. Once again refusing to accept the truth surrounding his father's death, Abbas ordered his few remaining followers to kill Altaïr. The former Mentor extended his arm at Abbas and placed his other hand on the wrist, and a second later, the castle echoed with the sound of an explosion. Looking down, Abbas saw a small stain of blood appear on his chest, which then expanded, until the front of his robes was entirely wet with blood. He collapsed and rolled down the stairs to Altaïr's feet, where he uttered his final words, telling his former friend that he hoped there was a second life after death, where they could meet again and Abbas could know the truth about his father. Closing his eyes, he died, the first victim of the hidden gun.<ref name="The Secret Crusade"/>

As Caha began juggling her [[Multiplayer Weapons#Barbed Daggers|barbed daggers]] to hold the guests' attention, Cahin slipped behind their target and stabbed him through his chair. As all present began to panic, Caha threw her blades into the throats of two of the guests.

Fiora drew her own weapon and joined them as well, until the entire audience had been killed.

In 1191, after the [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] killed eight Templar agents spread throughout the Holy Land, she was assigned by Robert to disguise herself as the Grand Master and thus fool Altaïr, realizing that Robert was his next target. The plan was a success, and Altaïr spared Maria's life. However, Robert was ultimately killed shortly thereafter, and [[Armand Bouchart]] took over as Grand Master.

Bouchart did not favor Maria, however, and did not find transport for her when the Templars moved to [[Cyprus]]. Planning to find her own way there, she was defeated and captured by Altaïr before she could do so, as the Assassins had attacked the Templars' fortress in [[Acre]]. Blaming Altaïr for ruining her reputation in the Order, she was taken with him to Cyprus and forced to help him take down the Templars.

Unwillingly giving information to Altaïr and escaping her captors several times, Maria began to realize that the Templars' ambitions were not beneficial for humanity, and slowly got closer to Altaïr. Eventually, she and Altaïr infiltrated the [[Templar Archive]] in [[Limassol]], where she went ahead of the Assassin and faced off against Bouchart alone. Altaïr overpowered the soldiers, and in the end, grasped Maria to remove her helm. Altaïr was greatly shocked that it was a woman he had fought, and questioned it as sorcery. Maria corrected him that it was not, and revealed that she was in Robert's place as a distraction; saying that both his Brotherhood's success of taking the [[Sixth Apple|Templar treasure]], and eradicating her comrades had not gone unnoticed.<ref name="AC"/>

Maria then continued, admitting that Robert had gone to [[Arsuf]] to propose a truce between the [[Saracens|Saracen]] and Crusader armies, in order to besiege the Assassin fortress of [[Masyaf]]. A month after Altaïr had killed both Robert and [[Al Mualim]], Maria's Templar rank had dropped considerably, and she was not allowed to travel to Cyprus with her fellow Templars. She confronted Altaïr after the assault on the [[Acre]] harbor, where the two of them engaged in another [[Swords and Maces|sword]] fight.<ref name="Bloodlines"/>

Altaïr bested her, and interrogated her about the Templars' plans for Cyprus. Afterwards, Altaïr took Maria prisoner and brought her with him on the journey to Cyprus, hoping to use her as leverage to lure other Templars out into the open.<ref name="Bloodlines"/>

The two of them traveled to [[Limassol]], where they met with the Assassin contact, [[Alexander]]. Maria was escorted and kept at the resistance safehouse, but escaped following an ambush by Templars, during which the building was set on fire.<ref name="Bloodlines"/>

Maria hurried to warn the new Grand Master of the Templars, [[Armand Bouchart]], of Altaïr's presence in Limassol, but Armand only grew suspicious of Maria's two "miraculous" escapes from the Assassins. Altaïr took Maria along with him on the ship to [[Kyrenia]]. Whilst on the ship, Altaïr spoke to her about the philosophy of [[Wikipedia:Empedocles|Empedocles]] – saying that ''"only a mind free of impediments is capable of grasping the chaotic beauty of the world."''<ref name="Bloodlines"/>

Although Maria resisted his ideology, she did take interest in it, asking curiously as to whether being able to see this "chaotic beauty" was truly something to be celebrated. In turn, Altaïr admitted to hardship imposed upon human beings as a result of freedom; though he maintained that ''"the [[New World Order|order and peace the Templar seek]] requires servility and imprisonment,"'' a statement with which the captive Maria found some irony.<ref name="Bloodlines"/>

As the two prepared to disembark, Altaïr cut the rope binding Maria's wrists so that she would be able climb the ladder to the upper deck. However, as she did, the two were recognized by the pirates who had ferried them there. Maria used the opportunity to kick Altaïr down the ladder, forcing him to face their attackers and allow her to escape.<ref name="Bloodlines"/>

However, Maria was also attacked by other members of the large crew, and was helped to safety by [[Markos]]. Because of his honesty and their common dislike of Templars, Altaïr entrusted him with Maria's care, and asked him to look after her.<ref name="Bloodlines"/>

During his investigations, Altaïr learned that "[[Moloch|the Bull]]" – his target – had posted large bounties, not only for him, but for Maria as well. Fearing for her safety, he rushed back to the harbor, where he found her and Markos being attacked by Templars. After rescuing them, Altaïr brought them to the Kyrenia safehouse.<ref name="Bloodlines"/>

Maria, her wrists once again bound, mocked Altaïr's crude plan for killing "the Bull" – whom she knew as Moloch – and inadvertently ended up giving away his position in [[Kantara Castle]]. Maria escaped from Shalim, and headed to [[Saint Hilarion Castle]] disguised as a consort, sneaking in via palanquin. On her arrival, she confronted [[Shahar]] in his private room, and demanded to know about the Templars' plan for the Apple of Eden. Shahar stated that the Templars would achieve order by any means necessary, even if that "order" became synonymous with enslavement.<ref name="Bloodlines"/>

Shahar grabbed her by her wrists, as if to subdue her, but was interrupted when Altaïr burst in upon them, on his search for Shalim. Maria killed his two pursuers as if by impulse, but refused to fight beside him further, and fled.<ref name="Bloodlines"/>

How Maria traveled from Kyrenia back to Limassol is unknown. Altaïr traveled back alone, and carried on without her for a short time. Maria, Altaïr and Darim were greeted by [[Swami]] upon their return. He informed them that their son Sef had left for [[Alamut]], that Malik was imprisoned, and that a council had been formed to take control over the Order; with [[Abbas Sofian]] at its head. At this, Darim left for Alamut to retrieve his brother. Opposed to what they had expected, Maria and Altaïr were pointed to a residence in the west side of the castle, instead of to the Master's tower.<ref name="Secret Crusade"/>

The next day, the two went to meet the council, seeing that it was made up of the most weak-minded Assassins in the Order. Haras then promptly returned to the courtyard, and killed an Assassin hostage called Vahid Ahmedi with his crossbow. However, Altaïr had scaled the fortress walls, and killed Haras with his sword. As Haras died, he tried to convince Altaïr that his creed was false, but to no avail. He then fell forward, and died.

Charging through the rooftops, Vali was spotted and sprinted, trying to escape from Ezio's grasp. Eventually calling out, the guards aided the Sentinel and allowed him to escape.

Vali managed to create a diversion to try to infiltrate the main headquarters of the Assassins by capturing two Apprentices, distracting Ezio from his true ambition. After freeing the captives, Vali ordered the Byzantines to attack the Galata den, and the fight ended with many losses on both sides. Soon, he and Ezio had a brief encounter before Vali tried to flee but was stopped in his tracks by an Apprentice who emerged from the rooftops and leapt down to assassinate him. Before he passed, Vali explained his actions, why he betrayed the order, claiming that he could not believe in a cause that had betrayed him. After he told the two Assassins, he passed.

Because of this, Matthias granted him the status of distinguished prisoner.

Eventually, Dracula was freed in late 1475 and was sent with an army of Hungarian and [[wikipedia:Serbia|Serbian]] soldiers to recover [[wikipedia:Bosnia|Bosnia]] from the Ottomans. He defeated the Ottoman Forces and he gained his first victory against the Ottoman Empire. Upon this victory, the Ottoman forces entered Bucharest in 1476 under the command of Mehmed II. During a fierce battle, Vlad was killed by assassins and, according to some sources, his head and ceremonial dagger were sent to Constantinople to discourage the other rebellions.

==Legacy==
In 1511, the [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]] went on a quest to find [[Vlad the Impaler's blade]] hidden in his [[Vlad the Impaler's Prison|prison]], which was rumored to be a weapon that could defeat any foe.

His genetic memories were later used by the Templar company [[Abstergo Industries]] in 2012 to train [[Animus]] subjects, under the title of the [[Count]].

* In ''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]'', Vlad the Impaler Coins are used as trade items.
* According to legend, some people believed that Vlad was a vampire because of his white skin and the fact that he barely came outside. This folklore and his ruthless acts during his reign became the inspiration for the famous vampiric character "Dracula".
* He was given the nickname "The Impaler" because of the way he would torture his victims. He would put lard or some type of lubricant on a large wooden spike and put them at the top of it with it between their legs and eventually they would be impaled, thus the nickname. The spikes were formed in a large circle as a barricade around his fortresses, also used to threaten any who oppose him.
