They're gifts, Mr. Miles. From Those Who Came Before
The Pieces of Eden were technologically advanced pieces of equipment created by the First Civilization; each possessed unique properties, and all were known to be capable of bending the thoughts of one or more individuals to the will of the user.

History
Those Who Came Before, also known as the First Civilization, were an ancient yet advanced race of beings that lived on Earth long before humanity. The creators of the Human race, the First Civilization used the Pieces of Eden to control their slaves through hypnotic trances. Whether humanity was created to be susceptible to the affects of the Pieces of Eden, or if the Pieces were created after humanity remains unknown; Minerva attributed the peace between humanity and their "gods" to the affects of the Pieces of Eden.

Eventually however, two humans, Adam and Eve became immune to the hypnotic affects of the Pieces of Eden, and stole one of the Pieces &ndash; the Apple of Eden &ndash; from their masters. Soon after this war broke out, pitting humanity against their gods. Despite their strength in technology, the Pieces of Eden failed to protect the creators from the slaves, who heavily outnumbered the masters. The war ended catastrophically for both sides, and both humanity and their gods were forced to work together to rebuild their world. Eventually though, the gods became extinct, and their Pieces of Eden were lost to the annals of history.

Over the centuries, the Pieces of Eden resurfaced; seen as religious artifacts or holy relics, foremost among which being the Apple of Eden. However, as time continued, so groups of individuals begun to see the Pieces of Eden for what they truly were, advanced technologies to be exploited. As early as the 12th Century, the Knights Templar were actively seeking and obtaining numerous Pieces of Eden, in the hopes of uniting the world in peace much like Those Who Came Before had done, and in 1191, they sought the Apple itself.

Led by the Grand Master of the Order, the Knights Templar used the cover of the Third Crusade to infiltrate the catacombs of Solomon's Temple, in the city of Jerusalem, where they knew the Apple to be located. Unfortunately for them, Al Mualim, leader of the Order of Assassins and secretly also, a Knights Templar, had sent his best to capture the device. Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and the brothers A-Sayf intercepted the Templars, and despite the death of Kadar and Altaïr being thrown from the battle early on, the Assassins prevailed and spirited the Apple to their fortress in Masyaf. For a year the Assassins and Knights Templar fought one another for control of the artifact, until finally the deaths of both Robert de Sable and Al Mualim at the hands of Altaïr ended the conflict. Originally intending to destroy the Apple, Altaïr found himself unable to do so, and instead decided to seal the Apple in the Limassol Archives after he had liberated it from the Templars; circumstances worked against this however, and he decided to keep the Apple himself, lest it fall into the wrong hands. Ultimately, the Apple did find it's way to Cyprus, where it was buried away until it's discovery and exhumation by the Knights Templar in 1487.

Centuries later, whilst hacking into the Animus, the mysterious Subject 16, discovered that throughout history, the Pieces of Eden had had an extensive history of changing hands, with many historically notable figures, many Templars or Assassins, laying claim to them; Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington, Gandhi, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Tsar Nicholas II, Winston Churchill and even Adolf Hitler to name but a few. By 2012 however, many had fallen into the hands of the Knights Templar; seeking to obtain the rest, the Animus project was set up with the intention of mapping the location of, and securing the remaining Pieces of Eden.

This Animus project was also an important component in the Knights Templar goal of ensuring world peace, through use of the Pieces of Eden. By using the Pieces of Eden known as "the Apples", the Templars sought to manipulate the neuro-transmitters in the entire human race to achieve their goal. Eye-Abstergo, a branch of Abstergo Industries, planned to launch an "all-in-one telecommunication" satellite into orbit of the Earth; unbeknownst to humanity and indeed, many employees of Abstergo Industries, the satellite would contain at least one Apple, and spread it's power out on a global scale.

Characteristics
Abilities
Amongst the greatest tools known to man; by interacting with a neuro-transmitter located deep in the brain of the human body, the Apples of Eden could control the human mind. Other Pieces of Eden were capable of warping reality, creating illusions and ensuring total obediance; both the Knights Templar and the Order of Assassins believed that the Pieces of Eden were the sources of many historical tales and miracles, such as the Parting of the Red Sea, the Trojan Horse, and the miracles enacted by "the Christ-figure" who foreshadowed the Christian faith, and the Biblical plagues that ravaged Egypt, among other supernatural happenings. Some were known to intereact with and change the passage of time, possibly creating paradoxes, while at least one provided an inpenetrable barrier, that would protect the wearer from any attempt at penetration.

Following the destruction of the second Piece of Eden during experimental use at Denver International Airport, the Knights Templar found themselves in need of another artifact with similar properties. Needing access to a map that indicated the location of all Pieces of Eden, the Templar front company Abstergo Industries kidnapped the descendant of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad &ndash; Desmond Miles &ndash; in order to view the memories of his ancestor. This would allow them to view the very same map Altaïr had viewed in 1191.

Each Pieces of Eden contained a great deal of energy stored within, and the destruction of one would cause an explosion on the same scale of a nuclear blast. One such blast occured in 1908, in the region of Tunguska, Russia, when the Piece of Eden known as "the Staff" was seemingly destroyed by Nikola Tesla as a strike against the Knights Templar.

Resistance
Although the First Civilization created humanity with a neuro-transmitter that forced them to accept the will of the Pieces of Eden, eventual cross-breeding between the gods and their slaves bore a hybrid species. These new humans passed some of the natural abilities of their gods, but most notably, were free of the neuro-transmitter that binded them to the will of the Peices of Eden. The first two known individuals to be born immune to the affects of the Pieces were Adam and Eve, who later stole the Apple of Eden and precipitated the war that followed. Members of the lineage also inherited these natural abilities and immunity to the mind-control of the Pieces, although the Pieces' ability to physically control them remained. Individuals such as Altaïr and his descendants Ezio Auditore, Subject 16 and Desmond Miles all possessed these enhanced abilities, and presumably, an immunity to the Pieces of Eden.

By the early 21st Century, the Knights Templar were aware of both the existance of Those Who Came Before and the fact that some humans were immune to the mind control of the Apples of Eden, and as such actively sought other devices to compensate for this. One at least one occasion Dr. Warren Vidic, an employee of Abstergo Industries, recieved an email from an unknown individual who had not been affected by the powers of the Apple, and threatened to expose what he had seen.

Trivia
*According to the glyphs and Truth files, many legends and myths throughout human history are actually historically accurate. The supernatural or paranormal parts of each can be explained by the protoganist in each having acquired his or her own Piece of Eden, i.e.: the Greek myth of Perseus, King Arthur, et cetera.
*In Assassin's Creed II, during the battle against Borgia in the&nbsp;Sistine Chapel, Ezio creates copies of himself, much like Al Mualim did against Altaïr. If Ezio is customized, his copies will appear with different sets of armor and colors whereas when if he is not customized, each copy will be perfectly identical to the real Ezio.
*The maps in Assassin's Creed I and II prove that there are only 50 Pieces of Eden, but Subject 16 says the shroud is Piece of Eden 'number 66'. This could be because there might only be 50 POE on Earth at the time.

Later still, following Desmond’s escape from Abstergo and the beginning of his journeys through the memories of Ezio Auditore the assassins learned that Subject 16 had managed to hack the Abstergo Animus before his death, and placed twenty encrypted files called glyphs, throughout the memories.

Decrypting all twenty files, the assassins’ were rewarded with a genetic memory dated "date classified BCE". The video, what Subject 16 claimed to be “The Truth” showed what appeared to be two free-runners fleeing with a Piece of Eden in hand; they revealed themselves to be named Adam and Eve.
*Many of the Glyphs have hidden messages in them. All of the decoded ones are stated in this page.

Cristina Vespucci (born sometime in 1459), was a well-known Florentine beauty and a favorite of painters, most notably Botticelli, who used her as a model for several of her paintings. Records kept by her father's guards indicate Ezio visited her quite frequently, and that he was "unbelievably dexterous", as the guards were never able to catch him trespassing.

In addition to her looks, Cristina also seems to have been somewhat responsible for jump-starting the career of her cousin, Amerigo. At a dinner party attended by Cristina and, among other illustrious guests, Lorenzo de' Medici, she was reputed to have been in conversation with Lorenzo and Manfredo Soderini about her cousin's brilliance as a sailor.

Well, apparently, she exaggerated her importance slightly to impress Lorenzo, and Lorenzo, charmed by her beauty, agreed to hire her. "Try Amerigo out. I bet after several years you'll have your shipping company named after him," she's reported to have joked.

Relationship with Ezio
She was both a noblewoman and a student, and one of Ezio's love interests. <br />Ezio visits her after completing a race to the cathedral rooftops with his brother, Federico Auditore, at the beginning of the game. Ezio climbs up to her bedroom window and sleeps with her. The morning after, Cristina's father walks in on them in bed, Ezio jumps out the window, telling him to understand for a moment; her father sends guards to kill him, but eventually escapes from them.

<br clear="left"/>
Trivia
*Whilst in the game her family and herself bear the name "Vespucci", in the novel Assassin's Creed: Renaissance, "Calfucci" is the name used rather than the one used in the game. In fact, the history shows that she is rather known as "Simonetta Vespucci", which leaves the name "Cristina Calfucci" as a probability of her Italian name. I dosent really matter as she has nice boobies
*Her relationship with Ezio is depicted to be somehow more intimate in the novel; as in contrary with what is shown in the game. Furthermore, it is told in the novel that she and Ezio love each other very deeply, which brings Ezio furious when he finds out that she has been killed by Savonarola's men.

Whether humanity was created to be susceptible to the affects of the Pieces of Eden, or if the Pieces were created after humanity remains unknown; Minerva, a member of the First Civilization, attributed the peace between humanity and their "gods" to the affects of the Pieces of Eden.

For a year the Assassins and Knights Templar fought one another for control of the artifact, until finally the deaths of both Robert de Sable an Al Mualim at the hands of Altaïr ended the conflict. Originally intending to destroy the Apple, Altaïr found himself unable to do so, and instead decided to seal the Apple in the Limassol Archives after he had liberated it from the Templars; circumstances worked agsinst this however, and he decided to keep the Apple himself, lest it fall into the wrong hands. Ultimately, the Apple did find it's way to Cyprus, where it was buried away until it's discovery and exhumation by the Knights Templar in 1487.

Centuries later, whilst hacking into the Animus, the mysterious Subject 16, discovered that throughout history, the Pieces of Eden had had an extensive history of changing hands, with many historically notable figures, many Templars, laying claim to them; Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington, Gandhi, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Tsar Nicholas II, Winston Churchill and even Adolf Hitler to name but a few.

The Templars were behind the crucifixion of Christ, in order to gain the Shroud. Somehow, the disciples stole the Shroud back and possibly used it to resurrect their Messiah. After this, traces of the Shroud has disappeared. It was definitely used to heal, as in the story of the lady who touched Jesus' robe and was healed from sickness to perfect health.
: Templar Associated Ownership: Rasputin (possible)
It is possible that the Holy Grail is a POE as Alan Rikkin wrote that anything related to "Christ-Figure" is a POE. Also King Arthur possessed the sword do he may have searched for it in order to open something similar to The Vault

Known locations of Pieces of Eden
Following the death of Al Mualim and the Apples projection of a map indicating the location of all Pieces of Eden, Altaïr copied the map and included it in his Codex, hidden away so that only one of his bloodline might see it. The other two that made up the last of the 50 pieces; one of the Apples and the Staff, were both destroyed in the DIA Satellite Incident, Tunguska blast respectively.

*The maps in AC 1 and 2 prove that there are only 50 POE but Subject 16 says the shroud is POE number 66. This could be because there might only be 50 POE on Earth at the time.

The Hideout is one of two modern-day locations seen in Assassin's Creed II. It serves as a base for the modern Assassins which includes Lucy Stillman, Shaun Hastings, Rebecca Crane, and Desmond Miles.

The building itself appears to be in Italy, as evidenced by signs written in Italian, and the architecture outside. The loft area of the hideout contains three doors that cannot be opened throughout the whole game, one of which is a reinforced metal door. Given that there is only one bed visible in the rest of the building, it is likely that at least one of the hidden rooms is for accommodation. Various equipment in the Hideout is branded with the Abstergo logo, perhaps indicating that it was stolen.

The Animus room contains the Animus 2.0. Lucy is usually found sitting at her desk with her computer. Her role is keeping track of the Assassin parties outside of the "hideout", fighting the Templars. Shaun acts a researcher, and he writes for the Animus' database as well as provide tactial support of other Assassins out in the field. Rebecca works next to the Animus, keeping record of its performance. Maintaining and fixing the machine is her responsibility. She also adds notes to the database using the pseudonym "Rebecca84", sometimes noting that there is a hidden "Glyph" on a nearby building. During the interludes when Desmond steps out of the Animus, he can interact with these characters to learn more about them and the story. Unfortunately, there is nothing else to do in these segments.

The ground floor of the building contains a large warehouse with piles of boxes, which later serve as a makeshift climbing tutorial for Desmond. It is possible that the Assassins bought the building after it had already been built as a warehouse. This area also contains the building's security systems.

Trivia
*When first entering the temporary base of the assassins, while using Eagle Vision, the road blockers on either side of the garrage door are seen in blue, as if they were allies.
*The buildings seen on the outside seem to resemble those of Florence. This could be why you don't see the outside when the assassin's are escaping. Also in the parking area of the hideout, there are words in italian for private parking and some others. Hhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm????
The Assassins, also known as the Hashshashin, were an organized Order of Assassins, who fought a continuous secret war with their greatest adversaries: the Knights Templar for over one-thousand years. The assassins, if not the order itself, had existed since at least 456 BC, throughout the Roman era, the Third Crusade, the Renaissance, and into the 21st Century.
The order believed in a strong set of values that strictly governed their way of life, the Creed, which consisted of three tenets:
#"Stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent."
#"Always be discreet", and
#"Never compromise the Brotherhood."
These tenets permeated every aspect of the Assassins' daily life, as well as their fight for "peace in all things". The Assassins carried out their duties through political strategic assassination, in the hope that killing one individual, would lead to the salvation of thousands. The assassins believe that they fight on behalf of those who do not possess the abilities, resources, or knowledge to speak out against those who abuse their power.

Despite their service to those who would otherwise suffer, the Assassins were still feared by the general populous, due mainly to their method of ensuring peace. The Assassins were most feared due to their terrifying reputation for taking life in public places before many witnesses &ndash; done so as to bring fear into the hearts of those who might abuse their power or corrupt the innocent &ndash; before vanishing into the crowd without a trace. To assist in this, the assassins used a particularly efficient weapon for assassinations: the hidden blade, a single thrust from which could end the life of its victim.

However, in order to ascertain which death might best assist the assassins' goals, extensive political knowledge was a must have, and so the assassins remained always in tune with the ever-changing politics surrounding them. Obtaining the information was the job of low-level members of the Order, who would be stationed throughout the cities of the world; these spies would watch the local nobles and rulers, looking for signs of corruption or membership in the Knights Templar. Once gathered, any information was passed on to the assassins' who were responsible for the execution of the assassination.

Training
The assassins spent their entire lifetime training to kill. From an early age they were taught to observe their surroundings and plan ahead; combat was a must and its training was continuous, with a focus on bladed weapons of all sorts being their expertise. However, despite such a focus on combat, the greatest consideration in the assassins' training was concealment; stealth was the greatest weapon of the assassin and everything about their life, the clothes they wore, where the lived, even how they walked emphasised a devotion to concealment. It was the duty of an assassin to reach their target and stand beside them, before they struck, and sink away into the crowd.

The other significant focus of an assassins training was maneuverability. By the time an assassin reached the rank of Master Assassin, he was also a master of an early form of parkour widely utilised by the assassins. Widely seen as alien and naive by the general populous, this method of movement allowed the assassins to reach areas not normally accessible to man. From scaling a wall to climbing to one of a city's many view points, parkour gave the assassins a significant advantage over the average city guard.

Note: Some soldiers in the Assassin's Creed series have limited parkour ability, as seen in their abilities to climb buildings through ladders, poles, etc.

History
The Third Crusade
In 1191, during the Third Crusade, the Syrian branch of the Assassins Order was centred in the fortress of Masyaf, deep within the kingdom of the Holy Land. Led by Al Mualim, the assassins battled with the Templars and their leader, Robert de Sable, over ideologies and the means with which to accomplish them. It is during the Third Crusade that the assassins learnt of a Templar interest in an ancient artifact hidden within the catacombs of Solomon's Temple and decided to keep it from their grasps; the mission was a success, although a costly one. With the death of one assassin and the arrival of the Templar army at the gates of Masyaf, the assassins proceeded to literally crush most of the Templar army under a concealed onslaught of rolling logs, before driving the Templars from the village below.

Following the assault, the assassin blamed for the loss of life that day &ndash; Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad (Arabic-Flying One, Son of None) &ndash; was severely reprimanded, and then tasked with removing nine influential individuals who plagued the Holy Land with their corrupt rule. As Altaïr made his way down the list, made up of both Crusader and Saracen individuals, the revelation that their goal &ndash; to bring peace to the people of the Holy Land &ndash; was just, unsettled him greatly, as he felt his victims were "misguided perhaps but pure in motive". This was a view shared by Al Mualim, who agreed with their goals, but felt their attitude of "the end justifies the means" undermined the good they sought to ensure. As his mission progressed, Altaïr sought to know what bound his victims together, and the realization that they were all Templars only served to reinforce the assassins’ determination to bring an end to the Templar plot.

By the end of the year the assassins' were victorious over their Templar enemies; Robert de Sable, Grand Master of the Knights Templar was dead, however the treachery of one of their own had also hit the assassin order hard. Al Mualim, Grand Master of the Order of Assassins, and a former member of a coalition of ten Templar leaders, was revealed to be a traitor, and killed by the very man he had sent to eliminate his fellow Templar conspirators. With Al Mualim dead, Altaïr took over as Grand Master of the Order, leading the assassins in their attempts to rebuild their strength following the costly conflict.

Eventually, it was decided that the Piece of Eden was too great a threat to keep in Masyaf, and the decision was made to keep it on the island of Cyprus, it the Limassol archives. However, following the liberation of the island from its Templar rulers, the Piece was kept by Altaïr until at least he completed his fabled Codex.

Renaissance
The Order continued to thrive, despite being forced to adopt a even more secretive and isolated existence. During the time period known as the Renaissance, the Assassin Order had apparently "gone underground". The reason for this is explained inside the Codex pages, where Altaïr states that even though the Templar Order was served a crushing defeat in the Holy Land and Cyprus, they still survived in more inconspicuous ways. As such, Altaïr believed that the Assassins too had to change tactics so as to live on.

Having abandoned the fortress of Masyaf, the assassins spread out across the Mediterranean world, taking up residence in places like northern Italy and Spain; however, the Templars too had done as much, headquartering themselves in Rome. By 1321 the Assassin's Order had successfully integrated itself into modern day life of northern Italy, widely unknown to the average folk. That same year a young sailor by the name of Domenico, the son of an assassin, was apprenticed to the poet Dante Alighieri, also an assassin, who was transporting the Codex of Altaïr from Venice to Spain. During the voyage, pirates under the employ of the Templars ambushed the ship looking for the Codex, killing Dante, as well as the wife of Domenico. Fortunately for the assassins, Domenico had managed to break apart the Codex and hide it from the pirates before he and his son were forced overboard.

Eventually returning to Venice, Domenico found his father and his patron, Marco Polo, an ally of the assassins, dead. So Domenico emptied the accounts of Messer Polo and travelled to the city of Florence under the assumed name of Auditore; eventually constructing the Auditore Villa in the city of Monteriggioni, which became the centre of the Assassin's Order in Italy.

Despite the order "modernising" since the 12th Century, they still retained many of the rituals and practices, albeit altered. The practice of removing ones ring finger had as such been removed, although the seal of the Order was branded upon the finger instead; such was the induction of Ezio Auditore da Firenze in 1487. By this time, Niccolò Machiavelli had become Grand Master of the Order of Assassins, with members throughout the major cities of northern Italy. Although significantly fewer in number, the assassins' were supported by the courtesans, thieves and condottieri of Florence and Venice; the guilds of which were each run by a member of the Order.

During this time period, the Assassins entered another period of increased hostilities with the Templars, who were attempting to overthrow the ruling House of Medici in Florence, and the Doge of Venice. Having already killed the Duke of Milan in 1476, Rodrigo Borgia &ndash; the Grand Master of the Knights Templars &ndash; brought the noble families of Pazzi, Barbarigo and Orsi together, to accomplish his goals. Entering into conflict with the assassins, Borgia dealt a crippling blow to the Order of Assassins in 1476, when he executed the experienced warrior Giovanni Auditore da Firenze and his two sons, although a third son, Ezio, managed to escape. With the aid of Ezio, the assassins' were able to counter Borgia's plot over a twenty-three year campaign, defeating him at every turn.

In 1487, the Order of Assassins learnt that the Templars had retrieved an important artifact from the island of Cyprus, and deemed its capture necessary. Following the artifact from L'Arsenale di Venezia, Ezio managed to overpower and replace the Templar guard carrying the artifact. Under this guise, Ezio met with Borgia himself and the two engaged in battle; Borgia fled upon the arrival of the assassins, and the artifact fell once again into the hands of the assassins. The assassins of this age however, were unaware of the nature of the artifact, although they did recognise it as one of the Pieces of Eden mentioned within Altaïr's Codex.

Modern Times
By the 21st Century, the world had changed vastly. Whilst the Order of Assassins had kept to their policy of desert camps and isolation from society, the Templars had begun to infiltrate society further; taking the form of many corporations such as NASA. The Templars continued to search for and investigate the various Pieces of Eden they discovered throughout this period, whilst the assassins continued their war against them; notably being responsible for the destruction of at least one Templar-controlled in Siberia in 1908, known as the Tunguska explosion. However, by the year 2012 the Templars, under the guise of their front company Abstergo Industries had begun kidnapping assassins, or those related to them in an attempt to locate even more Pieces of Eden. Notable captives included the mysterious Subject Sixteen and Desmond Miles &ndash; a descendant of both Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

Eventually, the assassins were able to free Desmond Miles, with the aid of Lucy Stillman, an assassin who had been working undercover at Abstergo for at least three years by 2012. Following this, Desmond agreed to aid the assassins in their quest to defeat Abstergo, mostly for revenge, but also for closure. Utilising the Animus 2.0, a copy of the machine used by Abstergo to explore his genetic memories previously, Desmond followed the memories of Ezio Auditore, learning as he learnt, adopting his skills in combat and free-running. However, despite his presence, the war with the Knights Templar had taken a turn for the worse; with their numbers dwindling, the Order of Assassins was beginning to lose the war.

Known assassins
The assassins had existed since before the turn of the first millennium; several known figures included Darius, the killer of Xerxes, Iltani, Wei Yu, Amunet and Leonius. Historically however, the forebearers of the assassins have existed since before recorded time, possibly reaching as far back of Adam and Eve.

Medieval and Renaissance periods
During the Third Crusade, the Syrian sect of the Order of Assassins was mainly made up of native, Syrian-born individuals, although some, like Altaïr, were born to parents of both religions. Led by Al Mualim, and later Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad himself, other members included Harash, Malik and Kadar A-Sayf, Raoul, Abbas, Masun, Jamal, Bahir, Karim and Qulan Gal, the death-bringer of Genghis Khan. Allies also included various individuals, such as Adha, and even former Templars like Maria Thorpe.

Later on, during the Renaissance, the Order's numbers had dwindled significantly. Having become much more secretive, members of the Order often had occupations and lives outside of the Order, ranging from artists, to thieves, to royal treasurers. The Grand Master at the time, Niccolò di Bernado dei Machiavelli was a Florentine noble, as well as diplomat, political philosopher, musician, and playwright. Others included the Florentine banker Giovanni Auditore da Firenze, and his brother Mario Auditore, caretaker of the Auditore Villa and condottieri leader, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Paola and Sister Teodora, the heads of the Florentine and Venetian courtesans respectively, Antonio, the head of the Venetian Thieves Guild, La Volpe, the head of the Florentine Thieves Guild, Bartolomeo d'Alviano, condottieri of Venice, and Luis Santangel and Raphael Sanchez, Finance minister to Ferdinand II and Treasurer of Queen Isabella I respectively. Others included Dante Alighieri and Domenico Auditore , founder of the Auditore Villa.

Once again, the Order had many allies amongst the common folk of Italy, and also amongst the nobility. Foremost among them was Leonardo da Vinci, Ezio's closest friend and a genius of invention. Others included Caterina Sforza, the Countess of Forlì, Lorenzo de' Medici, the ruler of Florence, Agostino Barbarigo, the Doge of Venice from 1486, and the famed explorer Christoffa Corombo.
During the 21st Century the Order had sunk even further into hiding, with the numbers fewer than ever. Although it was known that more existed, only four were known by name; Desmond Miles, Lucy Stillman, Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings, the Order's historian.
Uberto Alberti (1416-1476) was a family friend of the Auditores and Lorenzo de' Medici's ally during the time of Assassin's Creed: Lineage and Assassin's Creed II, but betrayed them by issuing an arrest on Giovanni, Federico, Petruccio and Ezio (though he escapes it) by order of Rodrigo Borgia. He is also Ezio's first assassination target in the game. He is portrayed by Michel Perron in both Assassin's Creed II and Lineage (casted as "Umberto Alberti" in the film). His family was evicted by the Medici bank and ached for revenge. He was given the opportunity by the Templars. He is also considered one of the greatest lawyers in the Italian Renaissance, even though he had no formal education in Law, due to the fact that he was self-taught.
Biography
Assassin's Creed: Lineage
Uberto aids both Giovanni and Lorenzo by giving them advice, but when Giovanni discovers possible evidence of the Templar's plans, Uberto gets rid of it, revealing his true allegiance.

Assassin's Creed II
Ezio meets Uberto for the first time in Giovanni's office conversing about something urgent, though Ezio is dismissed by his father before he can understand what they were talking about. Soon, Giovanni sends Ezio with a letter containing evidence that he must give to Uberto. Ezio does as his father asks, swiftly making it to Uberto's house (where Rodrigo is currently at). Uberto immediately knows what's in the envelope and asks Ezio if he would like to stay at his house, though Ezio declines. Soon after receiving the letter, Uberto accuses Giovanni, Federico, Petruccio and Ezio (though he escapes because of his errands) of treason. At the day of the execution, Giovanni reminds Uberto of evidence given to him by Ezio that proves his family innocent, but much to his surprise, Uberto claims that he doesn't know what he is talking about, sentencing the three to death. With the sight of their deaths, Ezio runs up to the front the stage claiming that he will kill Uberto for what he has done, but a Brute Guard disarms Ezio before he could get close enough. Escaping the guards, Ezio heads for Paola, leader of the courtesans, who is watching his mother and sister. After a few days of training Ezio, Paola tracks down Uberto for Ezio's vengeance. Ezio follows Alberti to the Santa Croce cloister where he is attending an art exhibition of Maestro Verrochio"s work. He is seen speaking with Lorenzo de' Medici about the executions and insults Lorenzo. After Ezio dispatches the guards watching the courtyard of the Santa Croce, he sees Uberto speaking with various attending nobles who are congratulating him for the executions. Afterwards, he sees Ezio approaching but, before he can call the guards, Ezio brutally kills Uberto with his hidden blade, stabbing him 5 times in the chest. Avenging his father and brothers, Ezio proclaims to everyone in the courtyard that the Auditore are not dead.

In the novel, after Ezio kills Alberti, he finds an undelivered letter to his wife in the man's wallet :

My love,

I put these thoughts to paper in the hope that I might one day have the courage to share them with you. In time, you'll no doubt learn that I betrayed Giovanni Auditore, labelled him a traitor and sentenced him to die. History will likely judge this act to have been a matter of politics and greed. But you must understand that it was not fate that forced my hand, but fear.

When the Medici robbed our family and all we owned, I found myself afraid. For you. For our son. For the future. What hope is there in this world for a man without proper means? As for the others, they offered me money, land and title in exchange for my collaboration. And this is 'how i came to betray my closest friend. However unspeakable the act, it seemed necessary at the time. And even now, looking back, I can see no other way.

According to the letter, Alberti must have had a son and when stating that the others offered him rewards, he must have been refering to the Templars.

Uberto: You...(if left alive for a few moments he will call for the guards)

(Uberto is stabbed in the chest several times. Now in the animus scene)

Uberto: You would have done the same, to save the ones you love...

Ezio: Yes...I would. And I have!

(outside the Animus scene)

Ezio: The Auditore Are Not Dead! I'm Still Here! Me! Ezio! Ezio Auditore!

Trivia
*Uberto saved the Templars from many close calls by destroying evidence of their conspiracy and hindering their enemies' progress
*It should be noted that Ezio assassinates Alberti in a rather "sloppy" manner when you consider that he does so by stabbing the man with the hidden blade at least six or seven times on the chest, rather than plunging the blade into his target's throat, which is the traditional assassination technique used by other assassins, including his ancestor Altair. Of course, this could be easily explained and understandable to most, since it is Ezio's first time tracking down an assassination target, and he has not been trained extensively by that point or he is simply venting his fury on the man who destroyed his family.
*According to the Animus database's filter, Uberto is not a Templar (while plotting with them). However, when viewing the portraits of Ezio's victims in his room of the Villa Auditore, Uberto's portrait says he IS a Templar.
*The reason why guards tried to take only the boys of the Auditore family could be so that they could no longer conventionally carry on their family name, quite effectively wiping out the Auditore.
