Francesco de' Pazzi (1444 – 26 April 1478) was a member of the Templar Order and a wealthy Florentine noble.

Francesco belonged to the wealthy Florentine nobility, and was a member of the Pazzi family. He was the father of Vieri de' Pazzi, and the nephew of Jacopo de' Pazzi.

Biography
Early life
Francesco was raised in Florence as a noble at a time in which the city was captivated by the ruling body, the Medici family. He was taught to despise the middle-class, and also those who attempted to climb the social ladder, such as the Medici.

Throughout his early life, Francesco idly watched as the Medici bank eclipsed his own, and the government influence his family had held for centuries declined. With the downfall of his bank and loss of influence in the Florentine government, Francesco became angered and enraged with the Medici family in particular.

During this time, the Templar Grand Master Rodrigo Borgia offered Francesco a solution to his issues with the middle-class that would benefit both of them: kill the Medici. Francesco agreed, and began to plot his conspiracy.

However, in 1476, Francesco was accused of murder by Giovanni Auditore da Firenze. Giovanni was preparing to present his evidence in court, but was betrayed by Uberto Alberti, who was a secret ally of the Templars. Uberto had Giovanni and two of his sons, Federico and Petruccio, executed for the crime of treason. With Giovanni dead, there was no longer any evidence against Francesco, leading him to be cleared of all charges.

Pazzi Conspiracy
In 1478, Francesco met with a group of Templars at the southern gate of San Gimignano. The Pazzi family members, Jacopo, Francesco, and Vieri, met with Rodrigo Borgia. The group discussed their plan to overthrow the Medici dynasty, and to instate the Templars as the government of the city.

Francesco himself was tasked with organizing the Templar forces in Florence, and then sending word to his fellow conspirators when the time came to carry out the plans. However, after the meeting ended, Vieri remained in the city. Mario Auditore was aware of this, so he informed Ezio, and the two led an attack on the city. Mario led the mercenaries into the city, while Ezio made his way to Vieri, and assassinated him.

Later that year, Francesco met with another group of Templars in Florence in the catacombs under Santa Maria Novella. The group, Francesco, Jacopo, Rodrigo, Bernardo Baroncelli, and Stefano da Bagnone, talked about finalizing their plans to gain control of Florence and overthrow the Medici. The group joked about the Medici's arrogance and stupidity, but ensured Rodrigo that the plans would be carried out successfully. Once their discussion had finished, Rodrigo claimed that a new sun would rise over Florence the next morning, before leaving for Rome. {C

As planned, during high mass the next morning at the Duomo, Francesco and his co-conspirators attacked the Medici family. Francesco and Bernardo charged at Giuliano de' Medici, and stabbed him multiple times, killing him. Stefano also stabbed Lorenzo de' Medici, however he only was able to injure Lorenzo, as the Assassin Ezio Auditore entered the battle. Ezio fought off Francesco and his men, successfully defending Lorenzo. Francesco fled, and Ezio escorted Lorenzo back to his home to receive medical treatment.

Death
You again? Why aren't you dead? Men! Slaughter him!
After bringing Lorenzo to safety, Ezio learned that Francesco was leading a battalion around the back of the Palazzo della Signoria, and began making his way there. Once there, Francesco greeted him from up on the prison ramparts, and ordered his men to kill the Assassin. However, Ezio evaded Francesco's men and made his way to the rooftops of the Palazzo.

{C
Upon arriving on the rooftops, Ezio dispatched Francesco's guards while climbing to the top level where Francesco resided. Ezio then confronted Francesco, who cursed the Assassin and jumped off the top of the rampart, landing safely in a cart of hay.

Ezio followed Francesco over the rampart, and began chasing him through the Florentine streets. Ezio eventually caught up to Francesco though, and assassinated him. In his final words, Francesco merely claimed that everything was over with the failure of their conspiracy.

Later, Francesco's body was hung from the top of the Palazzo della Signoria by Medici supporters, which frightened Jacopo de' Pazzi, and caused him to flee from the city, knowing that their plans had failed.

Characteristics and personality
Francesco de' Pazzi had a deep hatred for any middle-class civilians who attempted to make their way to the top, leading to his disgust at the quick ascension of Lorenzo de' Medici.

He was also confident and had much pride in himself and his fellow conspirators, claiming the Medici were too arrogant and too stupid to notice the plans being made against them. Francesco backed up this confidence by claiming to Rodrigo that no mistakes would be made in their plans.

Francesco was also violent and sadistic, stabbing Giuliano de' Medici multiple times after he was dead whilst yelling madly, demonstrating his desire to kill. Despite his violent behavior however, he fled when confronted by Ezio Auditore, and chose to run from the Assassin, rather than stay and fight.

There is also a hint that Francesco often ignored his son, Vieri, either intentional or not. It is stated in the letter from Fra Giocondo that Vieri often acted brashly and competed in competitions he had rigged in his favor merely to gain Francesco's attentions, hoping to win his approval. Francesco also seemed to show little remorse after his son's death, further suggesting that their relationship was not a strong one.

Final words
*Ezio: Now Firenze will judge you for what you've done.
*Francesco: It's over... It's all over...
*Ezio: Meglio essere felici in questa vita che aspirare a esserlo nella prossima. (Better to be content in this life, than aspire to it in the next) Requiescat in pace. (Rest in peace.)

Trivia
*According to Vieri's date of birth, Francesco was 15 years old when his son was born.
*Historically, Francesco de' Pazzi was reputed to have stabbed himself in the thigh accidentally while killing Giuliano de' Medici in a frenzy. Although this doesn't actually happen in Assassin's Creed II, he does make such a mistake in the novel adaptation, Renaissance.
*When confronted by Ezio, Francesco jumped off the Palazzo della Signoria into a haystack for a quick escape. This is the only known example of a non-Assassin performing a type of Leap of Faith.(Excluding Assassin's Creed Brotherhood Multiplayer and Assassin's Creed: Revelations Multiplayer)
*Francesco de' Pazzi was voiced by Andreas Apergis, the same actor who voiced Cesare Borgia in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
*In Assassin's Creed: Revelations during the memory The Prince's Banquet, Ezio while disguised as a minstrel sings about Francesco and his son Vieri's death.
*If the texture for the cloth on Francesco's hanged corpse character model is removed, it is interesting to note that the character has a modeled penis.
*Francesco was the first character to whom Ezio gave his traditional "requiescat in pace" to.
*Francesco is briefly mentioned in an Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood repressed memory with his son.

Rashid ad-Din Sinan (unknown - 1191), also known as Al Mualim (English: The Mentor or The Master) and often nicknamed the Old Man of the Mountain, was the Mentor of the Levantine Assassins during the High Middle Ages until his death in 1191, and mentor to his successor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

He was also secretly a member of the Knights Templar. In his desire to obtain the Apple of Eden, he started working with the organization that was once his sworn enemy. Rashid's teachings and work had a positive influence on the Assassins, up until his betrayal of the Order in 1191.
Biography
Siege of Masyaf
In 1176, Salah Al'din and his Saracen army laid siege to the fortress of Masyaf. Al Mualim, who was in charge of the Assassins at the time, had sent the Master Assassin Umar Ibn-La'Ahad to infiltrate the Saracen camp the following night.

While there, Umar was to leave a warning to Salah Al'din, using the information that was gathered by the spy who had infiltrated the camp. Umar was successful, and managed to leave a feather and dagger inside the warlord's tent. However, as he escaped, he was forced to kill a nobleman to prevent being captured.

The following day, Salah Al'din left the camp, leaving his son and second-in-command, Shihab Al'din, in charge. Shihab came over to negotiate peace, claiming that they would leave once the killer of the nobleman had been executed. They had found out about Umar because of the imprisonment of the spy, Ahmad Sofian. Al Mualim was reluctant to allow Umar, who begged for allowance to do so, to take the place of Ahmad, but eventually relented. After the death of Umar, the Saracens left Masyaf.
Mentoring Altaïr and Abbas
Out of grief for Umar's death, Ahmad killed himself in front of Umar's son, the young novice Altaïr. The shocked boy told Al Mualim of this, which resulted in Al Mualim taking the body away to cover up the suicide, and he told Altaïr that he would be training as an Assassin alongside Abbas Sofian. Al Mualim told Altaïr never to tell Abbas of his father's death, believing it to be best for Abbas. Al Mualim then became mentor to both Altaïr and Abbas.

In 1189, the Templars invaded Masyaf and managed to take Al Mualim prisoner. Haras, a Templar who had infiltrated the Assassin Order, ordered the execution of all Assassins that remained in the fortress. However, Al Mualim was saved by Altaïr, who managed to kill Haras from above. Walking with Altaïr, Al Mualim told him of the pride he felt for his actions, and how much the Assassin resembled his father.

Quest for the Chalice
In 1190, Al Mualim ordered Altaïr with finding a Piece of Eden known as the Chalice, shortly after he returned from an earlier assignment. During this year, Al Mualim temporarily resided in the Assassin stronghold of Alep. His second-in-command at the time, Harash, sold out the Assassin Order to the Templars, but he was soon killed by Altaïr. Shortly after this event, Al Mualim relocated to Masyaf.

Defending Masyaf
In 1191, Al Mualim sent Altaïr to retrieve a treasure beneath Solomon's Temple and bring it back to Masyaf. Altaïr was accompanied by two fellow Assassins on his journey, the brothers Malik and Kadar Al-Sayf. The mission, however, ended tragically, with Kadar losing his life, and Malik being brutally injured due to Altaïr's disregard for the Creed.

When Altaïr reported his failure to Al Mualim, the master was infuriated, though his anger was curbed somewhat when Malik returned, revealing that he had managed to bring back the artifact. However, Robert de Sable and his Templars had followed the Assassin and, intent on recovering their treasure, moved for an attack on Masyaf.

Al Mualim spoke to Robert from the safety of the fortress walls, showcasing the dedication of his Assassins by ordering three of his men – Altaïr among them – to leap from a tower, supposedly to their deaths. He continued to hold their attention while Altaïr released a trap, killing and scattering the Templar forces.

Though Altaïr saved Masyaf, Al Mualim demoted him from Master Assassin to Novice, stripping him of most of his equipment, and his authority in the Order. Al Mualim then sent him to find the traitor who had opened the gates to let the Templars through.

Altaïr was successful and brought the traitor, Masun before him. Al Mualim offered Masun a chance to renounce the evil in his heart, but when he did not, Al Mualim killed him where he stood.

Hunt for the Nine
Al Mualim offered Altaïr a chance at redemption, and showed him a list of nine men who needed to be eliminated. He claimed them to be tyrants of their cities, thus Altaïr's job was to assassinate them. After each kill, Altaïr was to report back to Al Mualim, whereupon he would be promoted a rank, and given a piece of equipment or taught a skill. Altaïr's first target was Tamir in Damascus, and after Tamir had been killed, Altaïr rode back to Masyaf to speak with Al Mualim.

Altaïr returned with questions, saying that Tamir had told him that he knew Al Mualim well, claiming that the deed Altaïr had just performed was leading to bigger things. Al Mualim responded that he was withholding the information to make sure Altaïr did not repeat his past mistakes.

After it was settled, a piece of Altaïr's equipment was restored, and he rode towards the city of Acre to slay Garnier de Naplouse. Once Garnier's life had been taken, and Altaïr had spoken with the Bureau leader, he rode back to Masyaf to inform Al Mualim of his progress.

Al Mualim waited for Altaïr, and when he arrived, Altaïr told Al Mualim about how some of Garnier's "patients" had treated Garnier as a friend. Al Mualim claimed that a leader could find ways to make others obey them and that Altaïr should trust his own senses, not the words of his targets. When they were finished, Altaïr was promoted once more and given another piece of equipment. He rode off to Jerusalem to take the life of Talal. After the assassination, he returned to Masyaf again.

As Altaïr approached Al Mualim, he told him that the task had been completed, and that Talal was dead. Al Mualim responded by telling Altaïr that King Richard was emboldened by his victory in Acre, and planned to move south towards Jerusalem. He stated that Salah Al'din was surely aware of that, as he had gathered his men at the broken citadel of Arsuf.

While Altaïr offered to kill both Richard and Salah Al'din, Al Mualim told him that it would create too much bloodshed, and groups would be scattered. He went on to say that he should concern himself on the main task at hand, before promoting Altaïr again and returning another piece of equipment.

Altaïr rode towards Damascus to kill Abu'l Nuqoud, the merchant king. Once he had finished his task and reported to the Bureau leader, he rode for Masyaf to speak with Al Mualim once again.

Al Mualim was waiting in a small corner of his library for Altaïr, believing that his apprentice's actions would no doubt provoke the peace they desired. When he arrived, Al Mualim gave him gratitude, both on behalf of himself, and of the realm.

Altaïr told Al Mualim about how his targets always seemed so sure of their victory. Al Mualim responded that, as an Assassin, it was their duty to notice and question. However, when Altaïr began to pose further questions, Al Mualim admonished him and simply told him to trust in his Master.

Altaïr was promoted again, and another weapon was returned to him. He then rode for Acre to slay William of Montferrat. Once the deed was done, Altaïr reported to the Bureau, then returned to Masyaf to make sense of the cryptic words presented to him by William.

Al Mualim waited for Altaïr in his study at Masyaf, where Altaïr reported as usual, though Al Mualim noticed that there was something on Altaïr's mind. Al Mualim told Altaïr to speak the troubles he had, and Altaïr demanded direct answers from him, claiming that Al Mualim only gave him riddles in exchange.

Threatening to stop killing his targets if he did not receive answers, Altaïr went on to ask what bound the men he had been killing. Al Mualim threatened Altaïr with a blade, but Altaïr called his bluff, and remarked that if any other Assassin could complete the task he had been given, he would have been dead already.

Al Mualim finally conceded, and told Altaïr that the men he had been striking down were all Templars. After this, Al Mualim told Altaïr that his assignment had not changed, but merely the context. With the matter settled, Altaïr was promoted and granted another weapon, with Al Mualim asking him how he had known he would not kill him. Altaïr admitted that he had not known, and had simply taken a leap of faith.

Altaïr then rode off to take the life of Majd Addin, the regent of Jerusalem, and after the assassination had been completed, he traveled towards Masyaf.

Al Mualim greeted Altaïr, and Altaïr told him that Majd Addin's blood had been spilled. Altaïr tried to piece everything together, with Al Mualim continuing for him, and claiming that the Templars desired control, and to create a supposed "New World."

Al Mualim then gave Altaïr a glimpse of the Piece of Eden, claiming that it was what had started the Trojan War, and what had turned water into wine. Although unknown to Altaïr at the time, Al Mualim tried to use the artifact's power on Altaïr, though it proved ineffective.

Altaïr gained another rank and another piece of equipment, then rode towards Damascus to assassinate Jubair al Hakim, the chief of the scholars. Once he had finished his mission and had exchanged words with the Bureau leader, Altaïr reported back to Al Mualim.

Al Mualim welcomed Altaïr home, and Altaïr pondered why Jubair's and Sibrand's lives needed to be taken. Al Mualim responded, saying that their lives should be ended, as they would have paved the way for change, in which problems were not given cause or reason to be intervened.

Al Mualim told Altaïr that the final man, Sibrand, was the last one left standing between Altaïr and Robert. Al Mualim promoted Altaïr and gave him a piece of equipment, after which Altaïr rode for Acre to kill Sibrand. Once Altaïr completed the task and had spoken to the Bureau leader, he made haste back to Masyaf to speak with the Mentor.

Al Mualim waited for Altaïr's arrival, and they discussed the last name on Al Mualim's list, Robert de Sable. Al Mualim claimed that once Robert tasted the Piece of Eden's power, he saw not a weapon to be destroyed, but a tool to be used.

Al Mualim went on, saying that Robert's life ambition of power would be completed if he got his hands on the treasure again. Al Mualim at last sent Altaïr to take Robert's life, giving Altaïr a Syrian sword to help him on his journey.

When Robert was fatally stabbed by Altaïr's blade, the dying Grand Master revealed Al Mualim to be a Templar. Robert claimed that the only difference between him and Al Mualim was that Al Mualim refused to share the power of the Piece of Eden.

Death
Altaïr hurried back to Masyaf, only to find that the people in the city had been put under a hypnotic trance by Al Mualim. Only he and a few of his fellow Assassins remained unaffected by the Piece of Eden. After reaching the fortress gardens by dispatching several of Al Mualim's pawns, Altaïr confronted his Master, who used the power of the Piece of Eden to restrain his former student. Al Mualim taunted Altaïr from the balcony above, and Altaïr questioned him about his motives.

Al Mualim replied that he had found proof that "nothing is true and everything is permitted." He then created illusions of the nine men Altaïr had killed, and sent them to battle him. Despite being outnumbered, Altaïr defeated these copies, though he was soon bound by the artifact again. Al Mualim repeated his trick, creating several replicas of himself. However, the young Assassin managed to defeat all of them.

Binding Altaïr with the Piece of Eden's power once again, Al Mualim explained his motives; that he sought the same as Robert, but wanted the artifact for himself, hence using his apprentice to kill the Templars. Altaïr questioned why Al Mualim had allowed him to retain his mind, and the Mentor admitted that he had tried, but failed, due to his student's strength of mind.

Al Mualim explained that the artifact was behind all the legends and religious mysteries in history. Concluding they were at an end, Al Mualim and Altaïr dueled for the last time. Though attacking with skill, Al Mualim was able to counter many of Altaïr's attacks, and use the Piece of Eden to teleport across the garden. However, eventually Altaïr bested his Master.

As he died, Al Mualim claimed that he had done it all to ensure absolute peace in the world, and claimed that Altaïr would not be able to destroy the Piece of Eden.

After his death, Altaïr took his rank as the Mentor of the Levantine Assassins and burned the body of his former master in a precaution to determine whether or not his body was real, or a phantom of the Apple of Eden. However, many of his fellow Assassins refused to accept Al Mualim's betrayal, and rioted against Altaïr for some time.

Characteristics and personality
Al Mualim, though known for being a wise and soft-spoken leader, at times showed himself to be mysterious and unpredictable. He never spoke of anything too personal or suspicious about himself, changing the subject or giving an unexpected answer when people started questioning him.

He revealed little about himself, thus almost nothing is known about his early life, let alone anything beyond his duty as the Master of the Assassins. By his efforts, the Order became a well-known, yet obscure faction, inspiring fear and uncertainty throughout the land, and spreading rumors that only increased the already legendary reputation of the Brotherhood.

As an educated man, Al Mualim placed importance on education, spending much of his time in the Masyaf fortress, studying the books of the library. He had a thorough understanding of a variety of subjects, ranging from philosophy to science. In addition to preaching the Brotherhood's goal of peace in all things, he emphasized that the Creed pushed for peace within as well; on one occasion advising Altaïr not to demonize his enemies.

Final words
(Al Mualim collapses. The Piece of Eden falls from his hand and rolls away.)
*Al Mualim: Impossible! The student does not defeat the teacher!
*Altaïr: Laa shay'a waqi'un moutlaq bale kouloun moumkine. (Nothing is true, everything is permitted.)
*Al Mualim: So it seems. You have won, then. Go and claim your prize.
*Altaïr: You held fire in your hand, old man. It should have been destroyed!
*Al Mualim: Destroy the only thing capable of ending the Crusades and creating true peace?! Never!
*Altaïr: Then I will!
*Al Mualim: We'll see about that...
(Altaïr approaches the Piece of Eden.)
*Al Mualim: I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing at wind... for in much wisdom... is much grief. And he that increaseth knowledge... increaseth sorrow.
*Al Mualim: Destroy it! Destroy it as you said you would!
*Altaïr: I... I can’t!
*Al Mualim: Yes you can, Altaïr... but you won’t.

Trivia
* Despite being Mentor of the Levantine Assassins, Al Mualim appears to have all ten fingers but this error has been fixed in Assassin's Creed: Revelations as well as all other Assassins in Masyaf.
* In the Penny Arcade Assassin's Creed comic, the target that Altaïr hunts implies that some Assassins, including Altaïr himself, saw Al Mualim as a father figure. This is shown when he tells him, "For I think I see Al Mualim's face in yours."
* When Altaïr uses Eagle Vision after conversing about the nine targets, Al Mualim is marked with blue, the color of an ally, despite being revealed to be a Templar in the end.
* If the player counters Al Mualim with their sword and he disappears, you can stop him from disappearing again by hitting him with a throwing knife.
* In Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles (set in 1190), Al Mualim is shown with a short black beard and dressed in merchant-like robes. However, in Revelations, he is already shown with his iconic gray beard in 1189.
* For Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Al Mualim has numerous changes to his appearance, with the addition of reddish tinge and several patterns imprinted on his robes, which is now closer to gray than black, as well and an altered face with a shorter beard. Also, Al Mualim is now missing his ring finger, a correction made to all Assassins in Masyaf.

Trivia
* Despite being Mentor of the Levantine Assassins, Al Mualim appears to have all ten fingers but this error is fixed in Assassin's Creed: Revelations as well as all other Assassins in Masyaf.

History
The earliest known possessors of the Third Apple are the Masons, who brought it over from Europe to the New World, as indicated by the hidden message in the third Glyph puzzle. George Washington was a Freemason (as well as a number of Founding Fathers), as well being the first President of the United States, indicating that it was passed on to the successor of the position. It later came into possession of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had teamed up with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin as leaders of the Allied Forces in the fabrication of World War II.

It eventually ended up in the hands of John F. Kennedy, whom the Templars viewed as a threat as he was in favor of giving the working force more civil liberties. The driver in the motorcade, under the influence of the Second Apple, took the Third Apple after Kennedy had been assassinated.
It later came into possession of [[Franklin D.
It eventually ended up in the hands of [[John F.

The Shroud of Eden was a linen cloth known to be a mystical object of restoration and healing. Numbered POE66, it was one of the many Pieces of Eden created by the First Civilization.

The Shroud was described as a white cloth stained with blood, which was usually kept in a simple wooden box. The shape of a seemingly tortured man was also burned onto its surface, positioned with arms to his sides and palms forward. However, Church records noted that the man's visage changed multiple times throughout history.

History
Greece
The Shroud's earliest appearance seems to have been in Greek myth, where it was known as the Golden Fleece, a legendary object of strange power. It was recovered by Jason and the Argonauts, who took it from a tree guarded by a serpent in Asia Minor.

Macedonia
The Shroud later came into the possession of the Assassins of ancient Rome for some time. After the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC, and the subsequent suicide of Brutus in 42 BC, Brutus' fellow Assassins tried to reanimate him with the Shroud in Philippi, Macedonia (region).

Since they had never used it before, the Assassins feared its effects, but nevertheless wrapped Brutus in the cloth. Though the corpse opened its eyes and moved its arms, it neither breathed nor reacted to any touch, and eventually fell still in a seeming "second death."

As some of the Assassins wept, Brutus was wrapped instead in a burial mantle, and the Shroud was returned to its wooden storage box.

Middle East
In 1700 BC, the Shroud was known as the famous multicolored coat given to Joseph by his father Jacob, and in 970 BC, it was thought to be what aided David, second king of Israel, in his fight against Goliath.

However, the Shroud's most famous owner was Jesus Christ. Upon discovering his possession of the Shroud, the Templars (under the guise of the Roman Empire) had Jesus crucified circa 30 AD.

Jesus' disciples were able to recover the Shroud, and used it to resurrect him. After this, traces of the Shroud disappeared.

Monteriggioni
The Shroud eventually came into the possession of Geoffroi de Charney, a French Templar of the mid-14th century. It was stolen from him by the Assassins of Monteriggioni, who replaced it with a careful forgery.

Upon confirming the Shroud's validity, an Auditore Assassin decided that the Shroud needed to be hidden. After concealing the artifact with claims of fraud and falsified Church records, the city well was drained and excavated further in order to store the Shroud.

The Templars eventually discovered the location of the Shroud, thus, in 1454, the condottiero Federico da Montefeltro was sent to besiege the city. Mario Auditore successfully repelled the attack, and through a confession from an enemy spy, Luciano Pezzati, he learned that the siege had merely been an attempt to gain access to something hidden under Monteriggioni.

With a team of historians and architects, Mario searched for any record of the artifact, but only found vague references to the city well. He and a team of soldiers eventually found a hidden entrance on the back wall of the well, and were led into a narrow corridor filled with traps. As they passed through it, many men lost their lives to the razor wires, pitfalls and tripwire arrows, with Mario himself losing his left eye to a swinging pendulum.

Eventually, the few remaining men reached the final room, which only contained a simple wooden box. All present heard a voice that promised to heal their injuries, but as Mario warned his men not to open the box, they attacked him. The condottiero was forced to kill them, and only just managed to return to the city, ignoring the screams and temptations projected into his mind by the artifact.

Fearing its powers, Mario hid the Shroud temporarily within his Villa, then sent for his brother, Giovanni Auditore, who took the Piece of Eden far away from Monteriggioni. The Shroud was no longer mentioned afterwards, and Mario dismissed it as "the Brotherhood's problem now."

Agnadello
As of 1498, Perotto Calderon was an undercover Assassin spying on the Borgia, though he fell in love with the Templar Lucrezia Borgia, who eventually became pregnant with his child. However, the boy was born deformed, and was expected to die within a few days. Knowing of the potentially life-saving artifact his Brotherhood kept, Perotto took his son and escaped to Agnadello.

Perotto soon arrived at the home of Rinaldo Vitturi, who he knew was guarding the Shroud. Though he was forced to kill many of his own Brothers, Perotto successfully used the Shroud to heal his son, but was later executed by his fellow Assassins for breaking the Creed.

Lonigo
The Shroud then fell into the hands of Niccolò di Pitigliano, likely during or around the Battle of Agnadello in 1509, of which he was a participant. In 1510, the Assassin Francesco Vecellio was sent to kill Niccolò, and to retrieve the Piece of Eden.

Though Francesco succeeded in striking a deadly blow, Niccolò survived by touching the Shroud; which he was able to drag himself towards despite his injuries. Temporarily rejuvenated, he took the artifact from its hiding place and managed to flee his burning manor.

However, he wished to be healed completely, and thus wrapped himself in the cloth. At this point, though, the artifact turned against him and destroyed his body, finishing the Assassin's job. Francesco, who had anticipated this, reappeared and took the Shroud from his dying grip.

On Christmas Day of 1944, in the middle of World War II, a Templar agent was directed to a restaurant in Milan, in order to purchase an artifact claimed to be the Shroud. Though dubious, he brought a large sum of money through the war zone and met with one of the Baguttiani family, who showed him a folded cloth in a wooden box.

To his surprise, the agent was able to confirm the Piece of Eden's identity using a metallic Abstergo Industries logo keychain, which vibrated upon being brought near the Shroud.

Use and side effects
The Shroud has been used to heal wounds of varying severity, mending injuries ranging from stab wounds to birth defects. It spoke in an almost kind voice that constantly offered healing, and urged its users to disregard their own physical frailty.

Despite the rumors of its abilities to do so, it could not be used to bring a being back to life. However, it could reanimate bodies to a small degree for a short amount of time.

The Shroud was also known to cause severe hallucinations in those who had used it, and (in extreme cases, such as that of Niccolò di Pitigliano) could also seem to tear a person from the inside out.

Giovanni Borgia in particular suffered lasting effects from the Shroud. Though the artifact healed his defective body as a baby, throughout his childhood, he would have vivid dreams of the memories of others who had come into contact with the Shroud, such as his father and Marcus Junius Brutus.

Additionally, Giovanni frequently spoke with a being no one else could see, an entity he called Consus.

In his later life, Giovanni would become known among the other Assassins as one who "spoke" with Pieces of Eden, and was particularly receptive to their presence. This led to him being sent on a mission to identify and retrieve one such artifact in the New World.
Trivia
* The Shroud is based on a real object known as the Shroud of Turin. It is kept in the royal chapel of the Turin Cathedral in Turin, northern Italy.
